OK, always have been a fan since they opened. The previous menu was great - the lamb patty melt was worth going out of the way for... the pop up Asian Sunday dinners were tasty, the new menu is , well, delicious. Not for the timid as when they say spicy - believe them. We got the take out aut would have eaten in had we the combined wardrobe (another story...) Saw friends eating inside for the first time and we agreed to compare notes afterwards. Well- A+. Started with the smoked mushroom spring rolls - the best I've had, others as well who were used to the typical over-cabbaged, monochromatic tasting ones. then progressed to the main courses- I had the BBQ skate wing in dana leaves- spicy is an understatement - displeasing? nope but be careful. Then the Beef cheeks Rendang - could taste each ingredient, lemongrass, coconut, lime, mild red chilis - not hot, very pleasant- perfect. and shrimp wonton mee - noodles, broth, onions, herbs, house made wontons and a perfect Thai broth. Had the fried Brussel sprouts with white soy/maple glaze, fish sauce, lemon, and peanuts - even avowed briussel sprout haters were wowed... almost a dessert...... anyway, congratulations on the new menu. First off I don't see how there can be so many 5 star reviews. Something seems a bit fishy here. I have been here twice. It's clean, the service is friendly although a bit slow at times. The ambience is a bit dark. The tables are somewhat crowded together although not terribly. The menu is hit or miss. There is creativity but the execution is inconsistent. For the price I feel that both times I have overpaid for what amounts to a fairly mediocre dining experience. It's not terrible but it's certainly not great. This place is a prime example of trying too hard to be something it's not, but charging you for it. The portions are small unless you get the burger with fries. In that case you will be absolutely stuffed. I will note that the fries are actuallt really good though. I don't go out to eat to get stuffed though, and I can get a superior burger elsewhere for less. If you do somehow end up here some time I recommend that you do get the burger. It will be cheaper and more reiable than anything else they offer. With all the dining options in fairfield county I just do not see a reason to come here unless you live in Redding and don't feel like driving to Norwalk and just feel like giving it a chance. We were in the area this weekend and were lucky enough to try out Taproot Saturday night. This new spot is such a beautiful addition to the Bethel food scene. Serving up super fresh, super local dishes that are layered and smartly flavored. We were with a group of six so we ordered a lot and each dish was better than the next. Some highlights for me was the pimento cheeses, meatballs and shishitos. Full off of the starters I ordered the salad and beets for my main. Both were perfect (like, maybe I should move to bethel perfect). I always am so bewildered why there are not more farm-to-table spots in the area given all of the available goods but this place was really worth waiting for. In addition to the delicious eats, the staff was super knowledgable and went out of their way to make the night nothing short of perfect. Lastly, the space has a really nice vibe. Not pretentious but echoes a bit of the food philosophy: simple, well put together and simply enjoyable. If you are in the area do yourself a favor and try this place out. Ehhh. I wanted to like the place. Atmosphere - charming. Playlist - very good. Wait staff - attentive. The burger was not good. Patty could have been an overcooked Bubba Burger, bacon was rubbery, Aioli tasted like sour cream and onion flavor. My companions ordered better. Cocktails and drinks seemed good. Pig cheek was like a simple, but tasty, stew, made traditional style with red wine. Hard merengue dessert was tasty. read more

Our first visit to Taproot truly blew us away. We enjoyed two of the cocktails, the satay and spring roll appetizers, and the crab fried rice, and everything was satisfying and delicious. It happened to be a 'Japanese' night so for a person who's always craving for good Japanese (comfort) food, I jumped at the chance. Chic ambiance and cozy atmosphere with young and hip patrons, which make you reminisce eateries in downtown Brooklyn or somewhere in the city (NYC) near a college campus. Also interesting is that this place shares a door with the adjacent cinema (rarity these days!) so as you're waiting for a table, you can smell popcorn. Good if you like that because I know some people do. I don't. Anyways, going to the more important subject; food. I think this is probably the best you're going to get in CT. The ramen is tasty but salty - as salty as the most authentic restaurant you'll find in Tokyo. Sushi don is good but the rice! So soggy. Pork belly sushi - now, that's eclectic and interesting. Could've been good but again, the rice! Yuk. And there's just TOO much of those carbs. The yakitori - not much to comment there, as its just marinaded with one of those off the shelf sauces. I can tell that the chef probably learned cooking in Japan as I came out somewhat satisfied but I have to say, my bar is set quite low. read more

All the 5 star reviews do not surprise me... Taproot is excellent. We had the foie gras mousse to start and it was two nice pieces on great bread with an awesome cherry jam topping. Then we split the romaine salad and the lamb burger. Both were excellent and filling. We'll be back to explore more of the menu. One slight negative - eliminate the door to the theater. We had a great meal and dessert as we were celebrating a friend's birthday. We made it for the Happy Hour so we ordered a half price bottle of wine and some appetizers. The food was all terrific yet different from the average fair. The heat was out so they had a portable heater which is OK. My only complaint was after we had paid our bill about $150 with the tip, we ordered a refill for two of the coffees. They actually brought us another bill for $4.50. Oh Bethel, how lucky we are! Masterfully prepared dishes with layers of flavor that are truly an experience. Lamb ribs and meatballs were the stuff dreams are made of. Porchetta with crackling so crispy it's sinful, paired with beans so freshly harvested, you can literally taste how fresh they are. The Hot Mess dessert with local blueberries and the most immaculate meringue and seductively silky ice cream you can imagine. Salted caramel popcorn panna cotta? Yep that was insane too. We just finished our take home meal and are still over the moon for every dish. The pork belly-crab rice was the best fried rice we've ever had - and we've had plenty - from all around the world. The lamb patty melt, and "fast food burger" are clever, elevated forms of both, with paper-thin cucumber on the burger that created a freshness that was less-pickled more-bright in flavor. Tater tots cooked to perfection, ditto fries. Before we finished our dinner, we looked at their Sunday hours. A Bethel treasure! Oh, and the service, efficient and friendly. Just had dinner at the newest and latest opening in restaurant friendly Bethel. Chef Jeff and Steph hit this one out of the park. We had the romaine salad with fresh egg and beets, dressing was light but very tasty. Great combo. The burrata with blueberries etc was unusual but what a great combo. Striped bass must have just been caught and cooked to perfection. Grass fed burger was scrumptious!!! Glad we got in for dinner as word spreads this will be a destination restaurant!! Food is great and high quality, space is cozy. Price is not cheap but not super expensive with medium food portions; you're paying for quality, not quantity. I had the oxtail sloppy joe - it was good, but I think it's just personal preference that I like an asian or south american spice profile for my oxtail. The fries that came with it were seasoned with salt and thyme and were great. My compadre had the chicken and waffles - I don't particularly like chicken and waffles but the ones here were magical! So good. I ate the crumbs off his plate. We also had the grits with cheese and egg - would also highly recommend. We will definitely be coming here again! read more

Our waitress was attentive and friendly, making great suggestions for dinner AND dessert. Their menu is seasonal with interesting flavor combinations. Very unique and definitely worth a try! This place is absolutely excellent. Easily the most adventurous menu of anywhere within 10 miles. The bone marrow, raw red snapper, and the pig cheeks were absolute highlights. Delicious cocktails with interesting ingredients, a grear beer list, and a solid ambience. Very bad experience horrible food service was good they took a lot of feedback from me and they defended themselves and points that they thought was good about their food I give them a lot of credit for that I think this place could you very well and I think the staff are very nice and intelligent I would always suggest this type of place it's just something about the staff did not seem happy in this restaurant that made me upset and I asked how they were doing and if there's anything I can do I love the $50 tip from one of the waitresses I will always do that for someone who is extremely nice to me read more

We met friends at Taproot because it was equidistant from our respective towns and the restaurant was a totally unknown entity to us. What an awesome surprise!! After deciding that we would share plates and after 3 hours, I think we tried everything on the menu except for the burger. Great flavors, unique combinations and perfect portions - even for sharing. Loved that we could see the kitchen masters up front and personal and I encourage them all to keep going as they have found their "thing". Great job. Absolutely amazing. I had wanted to visit but was sometimes put off by the outside the box ingredients and some what limited menu. Silly me! I had the burrata with apples, walnuts and kale pesto (unbelievableI) and the day boat scallops with brussels sprouts, parsnips, rice wine vinegar and honey. We went for our Friday dinner date night during Lent. We are fasting, so we Google vegetarian food. This restaurant showed up on the search. We go since its close to the house. We arrived, it was small and they offered us a bar seat. My husband and I chose to wait because we are fasting alcohol too. Lol! We were seated in about 10 mins. I suggest making reservations because it's a small establishment. We sat were offered flat, filtered, or sparkling water. They had a few vegan/vegetarian options. My husband told the waitress the restaurant came up in our search for vegetarian food. She said wow we usually come up tapas and small plates but, we can accommodate you. We ordered arugala salad, beets and apples, and they made a special green bowl. All meals were amazing. The green bowl was delicious: fennel, bok choy, cauliflower, scallion, garlic, seasoning and flavor galore!!! I was sad we chose to split it.... fresh and delicious. The restaurant shares bathroom with movie theater. We sat by the door so,the popcorn smell was distracting. No complaints...just good, fresh food! Pistachio butter with beets and apples was magic in my mouth! Good food can't wait to go after Lent to try shrimp and grits hold the chorizo...Lol! read more

What a wonderful experience we had at Taproot on its opening night. The menu is innovative and changes daily, depending on what's fresh and available (according to the passionate and friendly owner). We shared seven small plates/apps and found each to be unique and delicious. The waitstaff is enthusiastic about the food and makes great suggestions. The decor is charming and quaint, with a dash of hip. It was a great night as my family first saw a good film at Bethel Cinema next door, went to Taproot, and then took a walk downtown. I fell in love with taproot the moment they opened, but this past Christmas I fell in love with them all over again. I was looking to simplify hosting Christmas eve dinner this year and outsource some of the sides to Taproot. Jeff & Steph were very friendly and accommodating. Jeff offered to create some custom dishes based on what was being freshly picked at the farm and to match best match my main dish. The dishes were then prepared just before pickup time so they were all fresh. Communication was great (Steph called multiple times to confirm timing and Jeff was honest about some options that may not have stayed as fresh if served even 60 mins later). Also, the quantities were very generous and the bill was extremely reasonable (especially considering the quality of the food and that it was a custom request on a holiday). Most importantly... the result... absolutely amazing fennel/persimmon/pear/pomegranate/hazelnut salad, freshly picked baby carrots in a maple ginger glaze, roasted potatoes, and simply prepared blue oyster mushrooms.. it paired perfectly and had some unique twists that i wouldn't have thought of.
