We really tried to like this place and expected it to live up to the impressive setting. But everything we tried was pretty bad. How can you be farm to table with a salad that is dressed & tastes like Olive Garden? How can you be looking out the window at beautiful vineyards & the wine tastes horrible and cheap? The pretzels were soaked in butter and served with cheese with a failed roux. Steak was fatty and presented as if thrown on the plate. Desserts tasted like Crisco. We have been coming to Newport Vineyards for years now! We actually stopped in for a wine tasting but that part was already closed for the night, but you are able to get wine flights here too! So funny that Taproot popped up in part of Newport Vineyard's building. My last visit to the vineyard was early summer of 2018. At the time, the space was a bar area/casual dining space. It was a great transformation of the additional space. My boyfriend and I stopped in on our way to visiting some friends. We both opted for the coffee porter, on nitro. Our pours were delicious! There was a variety of five or six beers to choose from. I was torn and almost opted for the double IPA. While indulging in my nitro porter, a handful of people did come in and ask for samples before they purchased a pint. Most of which, opted to try one of the two IPAs on draft at the time. It is great that the brewery and the winery share space. This allows for options for people who aren't beer people. I highly recommend Taproot as a destination. read more

I love ambiance that comes from both breweries and also vineyards for wine tasting- sometimes creating a group to go wine tasting with can be tricky if not everyone enjoys wine, the same can be said for going to a brewery for non-beer drinkers. So The fact that Taproot serves both Wine and Beer, makes this a really great option for finding a spot to please myriads of people! It's beautiful from the moment you park. Stunning grounds and filled with only happy people. And the vineyard itself is so calming and peaceful and beautiful. I loved walking around in it and sitting in the ground with my wine. You can do flights of either wine or beer, and of course just enjoy a glass as well. I opted for a flight of wine and my favorite was the staff favorite Red. Really interesting flavor and different from any other wines I've had as of late, and very drinkable. The Dry Rosé was what I expected it to taste like based off of the description and didn't separate itself from a basic rosé too much for me. The Dry Riesling was not as dry as I had hoped but the flavor was very bright, light, and zingy from the citrus. The red cab tasted like someone couldn't decide if they wanted to drink a glass of cranberry juice or a glass of wine so then they decided on having both mixed together haha. It wasn't bad, but it didn't taste as enticing as I had hoped, however, it was different then others I've had!My second favorite from the tasting was the Sav Blanc. A little complex, but not jarring, not too anything except light and fresh. read more

The best part of the experience was Darcey, the bartender. Good suggestions. Great product knowledge. Helpful but did not hover. Gina, the manager, was very engaged as well. Had the BLT. Everything house made or locally sourced. The house made bacon was a bit disappointing. It had grissle in it and I was unable to chew part of it. The house made chips however were delicious. The olives on the olive and pickled veggies appetizer still had the pits in them. Some folks are ok with it I'm not a fan. Too much work to eat them. I'd rather see them stuffed with garlic or at least have the pits removed. The beer was great. I had the Happy and the F-bomb. Both were really good. The vibe was very nice and relaxed. Came here for my husbands birthday lunch. Unfortunately they weren't serving the full menu even tho it wasn't posted on their Facebook. We got 2 flights and a snack box for $60. The snack box contained moldy grapes and a lot to be desired. I told the bartender about the moldy grapes and she just said "OK" and took them back. LOL read more

Cool space and concept - Fridays through Mondays are outdoor bbqs on the patio, however don't go on a Saturday evening. The entire vineyard was closed for a wedding. A small cement patio with a few high top tables was open but the vineyard itself and all the green space was closed. The staff insisted this info is listed on their website (I'm sure she was getting asked by everyone there, but the woman I talked to wasn't the nicest person). Upon giving their website a second look I don't see anything about closures, so just a word of warning! Based on the customer service experience, I don't think I'll be back. read more

I have dined with Newport Vineyards before and had a great experience in the summer, but didn't know they are perfect for the cooler months as well! My family and I dined in the upper dining area overlooking the vineyard and brewery and what a wonderful space that is! A gorgeous wooden bar, fireplace, and lively atmosphere! Very cozy and perfect for a date or gathering. We started off with wine and beer flights then picked five local cheese that were presented on the most amazing charcuterie board with unique accompaniments such as grapes straight from the vine, local honey, and assorted candies nuts. For entrees we loved the smoked chicken which was outstanding and the local sea bass with eggplant, caramelized carrots, and roasted pepper vinaigrette that my mom said was the best dish she's had in a very very long time. After that we stopped by their gift shop to buy some wine and pumpkin beer candles! Luckily we live close by because we will definitely be back! read more

On our last visit to the Taproot Brewing Co. at Newport Vineyards, my family and I had a great dinner! For some reason, they were running very slow, but it didn't really matter to us because we were on vacation. The waiter apologized and told us that they were going to comp our dinner because it took too long. We were flabbergasted! It was unnecessary, but so nice, so an already great meal was even better! This is one of our must visits every time we come to RI, the food, atmosphere and staff are always fantastic. The woman in charge of seating saw my 82 year old grand mother (clearly an unwell woman, just going on an outing, something special for her), asked her to find the reservation. It was 11:50. My grandmother thought she made it for 12. Turns out she made it for 1. The woman told her "well, you can wait." THE RESTAURANT WAS EMPTY. I was mouthing to the woman that clearly, she is elderly, and we can just be seated, and we didn't need to stick to the 1 oclock reservation, we'd just take one of the 50 empty tables. She said she couldn't do anything and was clearly not understanding my grandmother is a confused elderly woman and the least she could do was act like she knew what time it was, to give her some dignity.. Thankfully a nice man came up to help us and seated us right away WITHOUT ISSUE since the restaurant was empty anyway! The rest of the lunch was just dampened by the mood of an unkind woman who couldn't understand accommodation. read more

We went there at 5:15 and were told they were no longer serving food and last call is 5:45 pm. Ok, we will just do a flight of beer. I sat at one of the MANY open tables and was told by the waitress 'these tables are by reservation only.' I said, I'm guessing you aren't taking more reservations, since you are no longer serving food and close to closing. She replied 'no, but you can't sit at these tables because they are for reservations only and we will be cleaning up soon.' We were then told by the bartender 'I can't sell you a flight because you don't have a table.' You can buy a beer and sit in the red chairs by the vineyard, but you can't sit at the table where nobody else is sitting and nobody has reserved them. Awful, rude, condescending service! read more

So the close their taproom at 4 pm on Saturdays because of private events which are being set up in the next room. However, the vineyard side where they serve wine and half the staff wears Taproot shirts is still open. And they could easily fit a set of taps into the massive bars here. Overall, the wine area is massive, the gift shop is large, and the restaurant is large. The beer section seems to be this tiny area that gets shut down while they set up the areas next to it. In addition, I think the sign said they had only 3 or 4 beers on tap. Compare that to to the 12 or so bottles of wine you can get in the wine area. You can go into their full service restaurant and get a beer, but I am looking to have a quick beer, not a fancy restaurant. Seems like they don't really care about the beer aspect of the business. read more

Second visit not so great. Cavernous area indoors. Just not a warm inviting atmosphere. Door to outside open despite chilly day. Had to keep jacket on. Got seated with 2 menus for a party of 4. Server took a while to show and we ordered apps and beer flights. Half hour later motioned to server "Oh, you haven't gotten your food?" Food comes. No plates. No place settings "Oh, I'm so scattered today". Apps were fine. Pastrami was a mess. Fatty and loose bits nothing close to what they call NY pastrami. Not one slice of meat. The beers we tried were delicious. Definitely go for the beer. The space is also great - regardless of the season. The rating is for the pricey 4-packs of beer ($17+) and the food. Brix Restaurant is delicious, so I was very disappointed by the food in the Brewery room. Please use real cheese on the nachos and offer more than a thimble-full of salsa. The portion was generous, but could really have been better. The cheese sauce was not very tasty & as it cooled it has a strange consistency. I would give it another shot. Also consider more vegetarian options. read more

Overall a very disappointing dining experience, especially given this was a dinner for a family celebration. We arrived a little before 6pm and were looking forward to a leisurely dinner of high quality food as described on the website - don't believe everything you read! Unfortunately, our expectations were set too high. First entree were the dried out pretzels; definitely on the dark - almost burnt side. Couldn't send them back as we had a hungry 3 year old with us. The next two appetizers were fair however we were then told the kitchen was closing in 15 minutes and if we wanted mains we needed to order now! A restaurant closing at 7 pm on a Saturday night - quite unusual. Against our better judgement we ordered but the quickly prepared mains were a total disappointment. The Heritage Pig comprised of dried out sausage, tasteless pulled pork and a "blob" of under cooked Pork Belly. The Duck, Duck Fig, Onion Pizza was missing the figs, the onions were hard to find as was the Duck - tasteless piece of pizza dough! The Bad Mother Clucker was just palatable, probably due to the excess cheese. Topping it off, our waitress went missing in action and I had to go to the bar to order another drink. If you like poorly cooked pub grub then this may be the place for you however, with all the great restaurants in the area... do your self a favor and look elsewhere. read more

Very nice facility on the way to the Newport Mansions. Interesting place. You can rent out the entire Brix Restaurant... In fact I was stopped as I did not see the sign for the hen-party upstairs. So we were escorted to the cafe, which really is a drinking spot. Not a huge drinker, do collect wines... but fundamentally how many brew pubs does New England really need? Ordered the fresh green salad, meatball grilled cheese and had a butterscotch blonde for desert. $20.00. Yacht Club Soda - the official soda of Rhode Island. We felt a little old for this place. The parking is limited and it was packed with the hen-party. Place was clean, but had the stale stench of Luke warm beer you find in breweries. The staff was was very nice and helped by making good suggestions and recommendations. I felt a little out of place and old here. Good pub pub food, higher end and better than most. I'd like to first start off by saying that the first experience I had was way better than the second. The first experience I chose to do wine and the second experience I chose to do beer both of which the specialties were fantastic. I do have a complaint and it's regarding the manager on my second visit as well as the waitress The first week and I came here was on a Saturday. I booked about five days in advance and it was a girls weekend. The three of us were able to sit outside under an umbrella shade from the heat and had the most amazing experience. Our waitress was fantastic and the food was delicious. We did do a wine flight and also had glasses of our favorite taster. Everything was sublime. The following weekend I decided to take my parents and family there it was A party of seven. I booked this reservation even further out than the one booked on Saturday and we came on Monday evening. The only choice I had for a table was to do a hightop in between the seven of us, there were two children. Gardener was the name of the manager and he was a bit rude and grumpy. Most of the seats did not have backs which made it uncomfortable for my parents and my kids. I had received a phone call on the way to our reservation from him confirming our table. He did note that I asked for a table outside which he could not accommodate and I asked him for at least a table with a view and he said he would not be able to accommodate that either even though I had it written in my reservation.I specifically asked for a table outside or to be seated with a view. We got none of those two things. Being that it was a Monday evening, I did not anticipate it would be very busy which it was not. I repeatedly called throughout the week to see if the restaurant could give us we have a table with a view. When Gardener called us 15min before our reservations he was a little snippy on the phone and ended up sitting us in a high top table that had no view or breeze. We were literally behind a wall And the only thing that we could see was the bar.We were sweating, all seven of us! And to my frustration, I did go up to the hostess and asked her about the 5 tables That were open that could seat at least 8 to 10 people outdoors. One of those tables was inside with a beautiful view. She said they had reservations coming in for those tables between six and 615. After 630 I went outside and took pictures of all those tables that were still empty and spoke with the host again, Gardner. I was very upset because he told us he could not seat us at an outdoor table and none of those tables were ever sat throughout the night. I complained so much that he finally set us out there only after we were done eating. At the beginning of the evening, when we were deciding on dinner, Our waitress did not come over to ask us for another round of drinks and our empty dishes of appetizers sat in front of us for quite some time enough to attract many flies. I was very upset because I posted about how accommodating you all were and we were not treated so well this time and this time I had my parents with me who really enjoyed going to vineyards all the way out into California and Italy. I wish this experience for my family could've been better than the one I had with my friends and I understand if one thing went wrong but it seems as though no matter what I asked for nothing that night to Gardener, it was not going to go right. The food was delicious thank goodness but my father did not like his wine and since the waitress did not come over to ask how everything was he was unable to order another drink for quite some time. I actually had to get out of my seat and ask for refills of water for my children. This is a Monday evening and again not busy at all. There should be no excuse for all of the lack of accommodations given to us. I would like to try and come back again but not to be greeted by the same gentleman or waited on by the same waitress as we we had Monday evening. read more

Local couple (CRU club member) who had never been to the brew room, just the winery. Extremely disappointed. Website stated they were accepting walk-ins this weekend. Host said no walk-ins are being accepted regardless of what website said. Decided to go to the bar, which is standing only. The entire brew room was completely empty. Not one table was occupied. We questioned if we could take our beer and go sit at one of the tables - the answer was "no". Still don't know why. The bartender said we could sit in Adirondack chairs outside. Thought that would be okay - until I ordered. Apparently you cannot bring flights outside. Once again, don't know why. We decided to leave and I turned in my CRU card. Don't need hassles like that. Too bad they can't take care of the locals who take care of them in the winter months. I will not be returning. read more

Beautiful location. We were visiting from out of town and this was the perfect spot as us girls were able to get wine flights and the guys got beer flights. I only tried 5 out of the 23 wines and they were all great. Beer and food was great too. Definitely recommend making a reservation. My only complaint is that I made a reservation at 7pm (last one left) and online said it was for 90 minutes so I expected we could stay and order drinks:food until 830. I was surprised when our waitress dropped our check off at 810 saying they closed at 8. If we were given a heads up it would have been one thing, but she didn't even stop by to see if we wanted anything for last call. read more

We visited Taproot during COVID and sat outside on the back patio. Very scenic and enjoyable atmosphere. We started with wine/cider flights and the spiced popcorn. The cider was delicious, and the red wine was just ok (but I have had my share of CA reds so may be biased). The spiced popcorn was different but still good. Our lunch was awesome, we did both 'Aquidneck Cobb' salad with chicken and the 'Not Your Mama's BLT'. Highly recommend both! Service was great. Nice place but the beer prices are OUTRAGEOUS. I ordered a flight of 4 beers and the cost was $14!! Each glass was 3-4 ounces and two of the glasses were only 1/2 full. When the bartender said "that will be $14" I said no thank you and left. I ended up at several other breweries on my way back to MA including Tilted Barn, Beer on Earth, Smug Brewing and Ravenous Brewing. All these places had fantastic beers at sensible prices. read more

We were able to get a reservation however the menu was a third of what was posted online. We ended up getting 2 orders of pretzels and a cheese plate along with two wine samplers. While the food was good, the portions were small and the bill was 140.00 not including the tip. Service was excellent and the waitress was apologetic that we couldn't get the menu items that we were looking forward to. Such a cool place! Food was excellent! My boyfriend and I split the burger and some stuffed clams - both of which were fantastic. The beer was better than expected considering I've never been to a hybrid vineyard/winery/brewery before. The service was quick, and everyone was incredibly nice. The view of the vineyards with the open door was gorgeous on such a beautiful day and topped off the experience! I was a bit sad that we couldn't roam around but it's understandable given the covid issue. I'd 100% recommend you go here if you like IPAs and good gastropub food. Mixed bag of emotions here. I love the idea of the brewery attached to the winery, makes it convenient to accommodate both beer or wine drinkers in the group. I originally came for the wine tour, and arrived 10 minutes early. They told me I could order a beer or wine and bring it on the tour. I went straight to the bar, and proceeded to wait 10 minutes for the bartender to work on filling a growler for another customer. I must note that there was another person behind the counter that was chatting with a group of guests, and some servers standing around. I finally placed my order, and got to the tour a few minutes late. The West coast style IPA was extremely hoppy and not too flavorful, I was not impressed. On the other hand, the milk stout they had was delicious. read more

Great location! Shout out to the awesome Glossy Ibis nearby the winery! Came here to celebrate a friend. Didn't have a reservation but got seated right away. The food was excellent. The monkfish nugget was flavorful. My friends raved about bean and beet burger with wonderfully picked beets. I had a pork belly taco which was amazingly soft and tender. I also got the fig and duck pizza which was a great pairing. We ordered 3 beers and a flight and my company who are true beer lovers were delighted. This place gave me Sonoma vibes and consider it a gem out here in the East Coast. The price was reasonable and service was great! Most of their ingredients were local. I almost forgot about desert! The food and drinks were OK. We arrived for a reservation at 7 and were told at 7:50 that our drinks were last call. We tried to order another round but since we had some drink left, we weren't able to order anymore. We hadn't even received our appetizers, and hadn't ordered our entrees at this point. We tried the wings and pretzels, and they were also OK. The cheese sauce wasn't warm, it was hard and thick, almost like hummus. The service was extremely poor and our server was rude about the rules. If these guidelines were announced when we had sat, we would have hurried along but we were told once it was too late to order anything more. The manager apologized for the server which was extremely appreciated, but the overall experience really ruined the night and we weren't even able to order our dinner.
