The Progeny are little assassins. They're getting scary good at jiu jitsu, a Brazilian martial art that I consider one of the most effective marital arts for real world use, especially when it's taught in conjunction with aikido. As luck would have it, their dojo is a hop and a skip away from an excellent Brazilian cafe, Tap, where we often stop in for a snack before or after, in keeping with the Brazilian theme. Tap is a mini chain (or soon-to-be chain) with three locations in NYC and one in Miami, with additional locations planned in both cities. We are passionately fond of the pão de queijo, a gluten-free cheese bread made out of tapioca flour that has a consistency similar to mochi. I make excellent pão de queijo at home -- but.... as much as I hate to admit it, Tap's pão de queijo are better. They're toasted / reheated to order and served with a wonderfully crisp crust, but tender, chewy, mochi-like innards. They come in three flavors: classic (flavored with only cheese), pesto, and spicy. You can order them filled like sandwiches. (They call them paninis on the menu.) In any configuration, they are magnificent. The menu also includes acai bowls or cups, which of course are all the rage. (I think there are three or four acai bowl specialists within a few blocks of Tap.) We like the ones at Tap because they're a more manageable snacking size for the Progeny. Some competitors serve bowls that eat like two meals. We've never tried them, but there are beautiful tapioca flour sandwiches (that look like half moon omelettes), as well, and filled egg wraps that look like burritos -- all gluten free. Our only complaints: The Upper West Side location does not have a bathroom for patrons, though there is a little sink for handwashing. Service, while usually very nice, can be a little sluggish. And the matcha, while refreshing, is very wimpy on the matcha flavor. (No ceremonial grade stuff, here.) read more

Finally tried the Brazilian cafe located in the UWS! Let me just start off by saying that the energy of this place really radiates the warm and loving essence of Brazil. The staff were so welcoming and kind. Helped us even find a bathroom to use while we visited. We got the pao de queijo and was it delicious. And honestly the best that i've had and i've been to brazil a few times (sssh don't hate me lol), but it was so flavorful and I thought it was a great size! This spot was recommended through a friend who previously went to another location. When we first arrived, it was vibrant with decor and music that set the mood to unwind with a drink, açaí bowl/drink, or pastry of choice. I had a cappuccino paired with Pao de Queijo. This bread reminded me of Pan de Yuca and was equally delicious especially on a cold day in the city. One thing I noticed from their menu was this promo or deal on açaí bowl/drinks that give a discount based on how cold it is. The lower the temperature, the more of a discount you get. One of my favorite food experiences on this trip to NYC. I chose it as the food I wanted to have one more time on the day I left, getting carry out before taking the train to JFK airport. The online order and pickup process couldn't be easier. The pao de queijo is perfection and deeply satisfying if you like cheese and bread. It's gluten free as it is made with tapioca flour as well. The steak sandwich (I had it with the tapioca wrap) was super flavorful. The Brazilians know how to do meat! The tapioca wrap is okay. We received 4 wonderfully delicious pão de queijo and wow! This is perhaps some of the best pão de queijos I've ever had! And I even lived in São Paulo! So I know a good pão de queijo! I've also had pão de queijos from other spots in NYC, and Tap definitely triumphs them. I heated up the pão de queijos because I cannot eat them cold. I heated them in 350 for about 15 mins. They came out so fluffy and perfectly decadent with cheese. Each pão de queijo gave me 4 bites, definitely not enough!!! Good spot for a quick lunch not too far from Central Park. It caters to any diet really so parties with mixed dietary needs should try this spot out. What a great find . I was in the city to see a show at Beacon Theater on a Friday evening and we wanted something quick, good, Gluten free and healthy and boy did this hit the spot. Obsessed! This place is paradise for someone with a gluten and dairy allergy. Everything is gluten free and they have such amazing vegan cheese to substitute in the sandwiches. The wraps are good but my absolute favorite are the tapioca sandwiches which can be made without the parmesan crust. They have the most insane texture and are unlike anything else I've had. The best combo I've tried so far is the chicken club tapioca with vegan mozzarella. I order it on Uber eats almost every week lol. It can be hard to trust Uber Eats when you have allergies but I totally trust this place and it has become my go-to. Been a couple times to Tap - it's my favorite açaí bowl spot in the city! The fruit is always fresh and the açaí puree isn't too sweet. I really like the milk powder they put in between layers! Came here for a snack in the afternoon and was happily surprised by how much we liked their smoothie! I'm really excited to try their açaí bowl next time since the base is probably just as good. The smoothie was well mixed and light, not overly sweet and no ice chunks - problems I've had with other smoothies around here lol. Also, the cheese bread we got was so good!!! They were pretty light inside and every bite was really cheesy and satisfying.
