    Kamikaze Roll
    Puneet S.

From the minute, you walk in, you are greeted by an amazing staff that is very welcoming. We sat down to order rolls from the menu. The ambience is very chic and old school mixed with new school vibes. They were very accommodating with customizing roles, which I appreciated. We ordered the Kamikaze roll with some variations and the staff was able to make that happen. The spicy tuna mixture was excellent, the tuna that was laid as a layer on top was perfectly cut, and the whole roll melted in your mouth. The elements of the sauce paired well with the fish combinations. I was very impressed with the quality of the fish, as well as the pairings that they had for the rolls. The rice was not stale, and it was very moist for you to work with. We also ordered the edamame, which was simple yet paired well and it was a good taste while being fresh. Overall, the experience was amazing, and I would highly recommend this place to anyone that wants fresh seafood at a high-quality taste.

The chef's practice creation with strawberries- he gave it to us for free so we can give feedback.

Overall: Very satisfied with the high quality sushi cuts and the friendly chefs. Slightly dissatisfied with the small restaurant space. Get a reservation for a table beforehand or you will be seated at the sushi bar. - Would I return?: Yes! My Food ---------- * Ordered- "Andersonville" Maki Roll and "Sashimi Dinner" * Flavor & Taste- The Andersonville was so good we ordered a second round! Sashimi plate was also delicious and great cuts of fish. The chef also gave us a free sampler roll of his newest strawberry maki roll creation, which was great and very nice of him. * Order again?- Yes! * Portion Size vs. Price- $17 maki roll and $35 for the sashimi. I think it's fair for the quality. * Menu Variety- Good menu, types of unique rolls. The Place -------------- * Atmosphere- Old style bar vibe with wooden, low light interior. Narrow intimate restaurant, not too much seating, but does have a separate little seating area attached. * Service- We were seated right in front of the sushi chefs, who were very friendly and talkative with us. * Crowd Levels- Saturday, 5pm busy- if you don't have a reservation you will probably get seated at the sushi bar (not an individual table). * Cleanliness- Clean * Location- On a corner, has a walk-up window in the summer, nice neighborhood * Parking- Free neighborhood parking (make sure the street does not require a permit first).

Very friendly service and great food at reasonable prices. Were very attentive to our needs and made it a pleasure to visit. It was our 52nd wedding anniversary and they surprised us with a nice desert. The other nice feature is BYOB so we could celebrate with a little proseco and not blow the budget.

This spot is so yummy! The menu is eclectic. We had the mussels for an appetizer and a BLT sushi roll that tasted like a Cobb salad. It was different but fresh, highly recommend!

Both my friend and I had Tanoshii bookmarked for a while, so we decided to try it for dinner after shopping in the area. The decor is cozy and it feels very similar to local neighborhood sushi restaurants I would go to growing up. We got two signature rolls - the salmon truffle honey and the shiitake one, as well as some sashimi pieces. The signature rolls were yummy but we felt both the truffle honey and the shiitake mushroom were the stars of the rolls and that these rolls were tailored maybe more for folks who aren't as focused on the raw fish aspect. I thought they were good but I wouldn't order again. Also, we tried the fish and chips and while the raw fish is a generous helping and well seasoned, the chips were stale and just in general not a great vessel for the raw fish. Def would not get again. For sashimi, we got the scallop and some others and I would say scallop was standout. Overall, I would say this is a good place for their regular sushi rolls (better prices) and a neighborhood sushi spot, but I felt the signature rolls were a bit expensive for what they were and I wouldn't come back here anytime soon / go out of my way to go here if I was someone else.

Came to yet another Asian place in Andersonville. It certainly has quite a few, but this may be the best one. Tanoshii is best known for the great sushi. Basically it's a Japanese restaurant with a full menu, but really the sushi is what people come to get. Prices are pretty good for the portions and quality. Before going we already knew we were getting some of the sushi, and we got to the seats in front of the sushi bar. It's the best seats in the house. There you can see your rolls get made. Cool idea. Everyone talks about how good Chef Mike is, and that's because he's good: he makes some good ass sushi. As for what we got, it was the V-Maki Combi. It's $12 for miso soup and three vegetarian maki rolls. Choose which ones. I got the avocado, cucumber, and oshinko rolls. Good price. There was a lot of food for this. Even though it's best known for sushi, there's other stuff on the menu such as their own version of fish and chips. It's best known for the sushi though. The combos are a good value, and there's lots of options for the fish eaters as well as vegans and vegetarians.

We arrived here about 30 minutes before they were closing with no reservation. They made us wait for a couple minutes. I think she was trying to get the ok to seat us this late in the night. She came back and walked us to our table. We started off with their Gyoza. Pan fried vegetable dumplings that were delicious. These were thinner than what I'm used to but still packed with flavor. We only ordered two rolls for our late night dinner. They're Dragon Roll and their Andersonville Roll. I wanted something with cream cheese and the Andersonville Roll was the only one. It also came with avocado, shrimp tempura, kanikama, unagi and cucumber. The Dragon Roll came with pretty much the same things, except for cream cheese. Both rolls were good as well as the service. I'll definitely be returning.

Given the price point, I wanted to give this a better review. I did enjoy the food, however, the service missed the mark for me. Although the fish was undoubtably fresh and tender, the sauces in the omakase perhaps covered up the flavor. The truffle oil and honey were still an interesting take which I enjoyed. The restaurant was deserted and the hostess seated me at the bar. The chef approached me and crossed his arms, speculating that I probably haven't had good sushi before and that I do not know how to appreciate fine dining. A confused chuckle later, I paid the bill and tried to tiptoe out without drawing any further attention. I would like to try more of the menu, but perhaps that will be a delivery operation.

We stopped by this place while walking Andersonville and tried their omakase which was amazing! The sushi was fresh and taste was combination of ingredients was refreshing. We got 4 dishes by chef Eddie who customized our dishes to our taste and suggestions. We were able to get seated without a reservation fast but recommended reservations during busy hours. The ambiance was lively and all service was kind! Recommend for a date night!

    Chicago Restaurant Week Menu
    Nhilven John D.

Tried the 2024 Chicago Restaurant Week menu with my best friend. Did a reservation for 515 pm online. We started with the Lychee and Elderflower martinis while we waited for our food. Started with the fish and chips for our First Bite, which came with spicy tuna, pico de gallo, avocado, tobiko, lemon juice; served on a flour tortilla chip. This was a really starter to the entire menu. Our Second Bite came with Ponzu Sashimi and the Bluefin Truffle Sashimi. I preferred the latter but both were really amazing Our Third Bite included the nigiri flight. This came with the following: hamachi + negi | sake + yuzu koshö | maguro + kizami wasabi. All were really good and couldnt put any of them above the other. Our main Special Rolls for the Fourth bite came with the following: - Hamachi, avocado, soy-wasabi sauce, jalapeno - Maguro, avocado, spicy tuna, tempura, baked Japanese chili aioli - Sake, avocado, truffle honey & gochujang sauce - Escolar, avocado, shiitake mushrooms, chive sauce These were incredible. They told us to start with the Hamachi but then anything else after that. I say that was good advice. Ended with the strawberry and mango mochis for dessert. Overall, it was a wonderful experience for Chicago Restaurant Week. The service was great and the menu was pretty good for the price. The ambience could be good for somwthing casual, but can be good for dates and an intimate group. Would definitely like to come back and the full menu.

What a lovey and intimate sushi spot! If you can, definitely sit at the counter to soak in the snug and cozy vibe. The food was delightful. We started with the fish & chips appetizer--a playful dish where the server mixed fish and served it on a chip (resembling a tiny pizza). The seared tuna salad was refreshing with a subtle smokiness. Among the rolls, we particularly enjoyed the toro truffle and the shiitake roll. We chose the omakase style and let the chef select our dishes. Just note that the bill is itemized, so you pay for each item rather than a fixed price.

I got the eggplant tempura snack off the happy hour menu for $6 and this was SO good. And actually a little too much for one person! Portion was generous and this was delicious. Perfectly crispy, with super soft jammy eggplant, with mildly sweet, savory, herby, and fish saucy(?) flavors. I opted to get a yuzu margarita, not on the happy hour menu, but yuzu margarita. YUM! To round it out, I got the deluxe nigiri set and this was SO fabulous. Really delicious, high quality fish, with inventive garnishes, but while still letting the fish itself shine. There was a specialty scallop nigiri on the menu as well with nori-infused French butter. The sushi chef heard me talking about all the things I was trying to choose between and just upgraded the scallop nigiri that comes with the deluxe set to the specialty one, with no added charge (which was a surprise!). Super lovely folks working behind the bar. If I wasn't an out of towner, I could absolutely see myself becoming a regular here. Interior was vibey but in a relaxed, approachable way. We got seated at the bar which was cool cuz u can see the people making the sushi. It was a pretty causal vibe where you can hang with friends and such. They also had a good amount of seating. Okay now the food... it was really good. Mako scallop 10/10 this was my fave dish of the night. Super super creamy!! It also had avocado inside which helped w the creaminess. If you're by yourself just get the 5 bc it's so rich you might get tired of it. But yes I rly liked this one. Togarashi Chicken Nuggets 7/10: the seasoning was so good but it could be a bit dry some parts. The sauce was okay, it was like a garlic aoili sauce? But def crispy. Crispy tuna rice 6/10: I didn't really like this dish bc it felt like it wasn't spicy? Enough. The rice was crispy yes but the tuna on top just tasted kinda bland. Matcha tiramisu 9/10: I thought it was gonna be on the heavy and sweet side but I thought wrong! It wasn't too sweet and it was pretty airy. However the strawberry sauce wasn't my vibe but the cake itself was really good. I recommend you tell the server you'll put the sauce on yourself in case you don't like it. Hand rolls: Salmon avo 6/10: nothing super special Toro: 8/10 yummy and rich Scallop 6/10: I usually like scallop but this one was kinda like smoked? Idk but I liked the scalllop taste on the maki more. tuna crunch 8/10: the crunch made it pretty good texture wise Overall it was such a great place to have dinner. Our server was also so helpful and gave us his recs and they didn't disappoint. I would def come back if I was in the area!

Service was outstanding the chefs made wonderful reccomendations including their secret menu item ' The BIG MAC' Ambiance was killer and its a small space with limited seatings every night. Perfect for a sexy date night experience and great for talking !!

We came here for the $55 omakase deal and for the price, it was definitely worth it! We had 12…read morecourses, and it was a very intimate experience. Our server was so nice and we had a great conversation with the other guests as well. The sushi itself was fine, as no dish was super standout except for the surf and turf wagyu course, which I really enjoyed and thought was creative. I think I would have wanted more than just nigiri and more creativity with the sushi in terms of flavor and visuals, but I think it's a great starter omakase and a great gateway into trying more.
