We knew we would need new brakes at some point, they've been telling us this for about a year when we bring it in for regular maintenance. Painful price tho for everything we needed done- brakes (pads & rotors), brake fluid, radiator flush and an oil change came to a whopping $1350. We brought it in on Wednesday morning and it was done friday afternoon - so we ended up getting a rental car to get around. They do good work; we did have to call to get status tho vs other techs were more proactive with communications. Absolutely do NOT go to Tanner Motors. I came in for a simple oil change after being referred by someone in a Mini Cooper club and was quoted $99. After waiting a couple of hours, I was charged $150.48--already a red flag. It only got worse from there. After I got home, my car was leaking oil all over my garage. I brought it back immediately, and instead of taking responsibility, they gave me a vague explanation and then tried to hit me with nearly $4,000 in repairs: * Oil pan replacement: $1,696.44 * Oil filter housing: $1,519.93 * Driver-side axle: $708.98 This sounded outrageous, so I took my car to an independent mechanic. The real issue? A stripped oil drain plug and a simple O-ring replacement--something that should have been caught and handled properly the first time. Including additional necessary work, I paid about $550 total--nowhere near the thousands they tried to charge me. This experience felt completely dishonest and unacceptable. Whether it was incompetence or something worse, I cannot trust their work or their recommendations. I will never return, and I strongly recommend that others avoid this shop entirely. The front desk staff is pleasant, but the experience was unfortunately very poor. This shop is by far the most expensive I've encountered, charging over $1,500 for a repair that multiple other shops quoted at $900. I felt stuck because they required a $189 diagnostic fee that I never requested just to get my vehicle back. Since I had already explained the specific issues, the diagnosis felt unnecessary. Sadly, the first thing most think about is honesty when it comes to mechanics/service shops. Let me say, Tanner is your advocate. If you are lucky enough to have Greg as your service advisor, you will be in great hands. he educates you, welcomes questions and is all around a great person. The BMW dealership said I had an oil leak (showed me picture of staining) and quoted me $2500 to fix it. Since the car was not under warranty, I chose to get a second opinion with Tanner. Greg got me in quickly, the car was inspected, and it was reported back to me that I did NOT have a leak. It was just staining, probably from a previous oil change. Do not be fooled by Derik's "customer service" skills. Both he and the owner of the place are highly unprofessional. I found this place online, and after reading some 5-star reviews went in there and asked to check out my car and fix everything required. I never argued when they estimated my repairs for $2800: I love my car. I took my car and brought it back in a week because I couldn't drive it, the car was too oversensitive to drive. What was the problem - they didn't know, and they couldn't fix it. So I ended up paying extra money for some other service and they perfectly fixed it. One year later I called them back complaining about strange sounds from my front right wheel and asking to check it out and tell me is it something that goes under the warranty, because when they took my money they said that it is a 2-year warranty on the work they provided. First, they couldn't identify what is it, they couldn't even guess it, second, they were very rude clearly implying that they don't want my business. Maybe this 1-star review will help other people to avoid their unprofessional and overpriced service. Please, do your research before going to Tanner Motors. Advice 2 the owner: Do not reply "I am sorry" to this review, I don't give a crap about your "sorry", and stop hiring mechanics that look like bums: you are a luxury car service. read more

My daughter was informed by Tanner her vehicle was misfiring due to needing new plugs and coils at the cost of $800. They looked at her coils and determined they were non-factory aftermarket, telling her they looked like they were Chinese and who knows what else is going on in there? What they did to determine that the plugs and coils were bad and the cause of the issue is unknown to me. Sounds like just looked? I am awaiting to review paperwork that my daughter has from Tanner. The plugs and coils in my daughter's car are less than 4 months old, I put them in. I ordered well reviewed-quality parts from FCP that were within my daughter's budget. She is 19, a student and works two jobs. This car she purchased on her own, with no help, is her only way around. It had 50k on it when she bought it and is around the 80k mark now. She needs her car like the rest of us. There is a cylinder misfire on cylinder 2. Before she took the car into Tanner my daughter and I looked at her car together. We pulled the coil on #2. We then pulled the plug and it inspected fine - light tan. We then swapped coils to see if the misfire would jump a cylinder from the swapping of the coils, it did not. I informed her to take it into a shop and have it looked at. It would need a compression test and if that checks okay then a review of the injectors would be next. She took her car in on her own to Tanner. As I mentioned above - Tanner appeared to look at her coils, determine they were aftermarket and said coils and plugs need replacing. When my daughter explained a second time to them those parts were new and what she knew in regards to us looking at her coil on number 2 and plug, Tanner then told her that a compression check would be required on another appointment. If compression was fine then injectors would need to be looked at. I was hoping that is what they would of have done in the first place - Diagnosis the problem, the reason why the car is there. They told her to bring the car back in for a compression check and it would be $75 for that. This first visit (last visit) was a waste of $150 for my daughter. She lost a day of work for this and they are expecting her to miss another one to perform a compression test for additional cost. No thanks. I would not recommend Tanner from this experience. I would want a shop that looks into the issue the car is there for. Not one that points at a non-factory replacement part and says there is the issue and "who else knows what's going on in there". read more

They did a great job servicing my vehicle at a way more affordable price than the dealership quoted me and their communication is top notch. They keep you informed of the progress of your service every step of the way and clearly address all questions and concerns. I basically live on the other side of the world - the far west valley - where Happy Valley Rd ends, yet every time my Volvo needs service, I still make the trek all the way to Tanner Motors. I keep thinking, "Why do I drive all this way?" but then once I get there, I remember. The people here are so friendly and honest about everything. Not to mention, their prices are more reasonable than going to a Volvo dealership. Since the Volvo Scottsdale location closed and I switched to Sanderson Ford-Volvo dealeriship/service for awhile, I just always felt creeped out after going to those places. If they were friendly, it seemed somehow fake. Here at Tanner Motors, Derreck (sorry if I mispelled your name and it should be Derek instead..) always explains everything so clearly. He works up at the front desk. If I want to see what's going on with my car, I can just open the door to the garage and check on it. They will show you what's going on and there's never a feeling of being misled or talked into doing something that you're not ready for. Even Chris' service guys will come in and greet you and help explain things. It's seldom that you get a chance to see what's "behind the scenes." I love this independent Volvo shop! I will tell people over and over again to come here. I even referred a friend to their other place, Tanner Auto Body Shop, to get his car fixed. (Oh in case you were wondering, Tanner Body Shop can handle other cars than just Volvos). Would not recommend. They failed to dx very important safety issues yet dx of other issues that were not accurate. They never got back to me with body work estimate and what they worked on caused new issues. They did not respond to my email in reference to request for information on why I had new issues after my car was worked on. We took our Prius there because of break issues. They did a complete diagnostic test, contacted Toyota and researched this common hydraulic issue. They didn't charge is for their time, even though it was left there overnight and gave us great advice on what to do next. This is my new favorite place to take my used Mini Cooper - Derek was completely consultative , the techs and mechanics are great, and they take the necessary time and "dude diligence" to find what's wrong underneath the hood. My engine had to be decarbed, because it was filled with carbon deposits from years of indifference and taking the previously used vehicle to the wrong service places using cheap oil products. Also my spark plugs needed to be replaced and Derek pointed that out. Basically from an end-to-end view they took care of me, and I will be back for my struts work at a later time, because it was costly to do all the needed service work in one shot! I've had nothing but pleasant experiences with Chris and his incredibly competent staff at Tanner Motors. I found them a day after my 2002 S40 broke down in rural Utah; a local mechanic devised an extremely clever stop-gap solution and instructed me what to tell the independent Volvo shop (one other than Tanner Motors) to whom I regularly took my car in Phoenix when I was a student at ASU, so that the problem could be fixed properly. I arrived in Phoenix the next day and visited that mechanic, only to be charged $75 for nothing but a run-around story; essentially, he was clueless. Imagine my relief when I called Tanner Motors: Chris instantly understood the situation, and fixed the problem permanently the next morning. I've been scheduling service appointments at Tanner Motors regularly when I visit my girlfriend in Phoenix... I have complete trust in their competence and judgment, and their prices are reasonable.
