My partner and I tried Tang Jip for the first time this evening, and we were so impressed! The food and service were both excellent. The ambiance was also lovely. It was a quiet Tuesday evening, and we were among the last customers there, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. I'm pretty selective about finding the right balance between taste and nutrition, and this meal really hit the mark. We both ordered the bibimbap with tofu and mixed grains instead of white rice. I especially appreciated having that option--it's surprisingly rare to find anything other than white rice at authentic Korean restaurants. The variety of vegetables, both sautéed and fermented, was such a treat. There was a generous amount of food, but we ate every bite because it was so delicious! Next time, we'll ask for a takeout box at the beginning so we can pace ourselves and have leftovers for the next day. Definitely looking forward to coming back! read more

My initial reaction was damnnnn two Korean restaurants across from each other? They got beef? Are they at war? Will their kids be on some Romeo and Juliet type of time? But fret not, Tang Jip and Ohgane are owned by the same family. The only beef they got is the delicious kind. Now we all love and respect Ohgane, but not every day is a "take an edible and eat you can" kind of day. Sometimes you want your Korean food experience to be less intense, more laid back. Here enters Tang Jip. Get stews! A reasonable portion of short rib! Noodles! You'll enjoy it and not feel stuffed to the brim after. Today I enjoyed my tofu stew and felt classy after, whereas I usually have to be wheeled out of Ohgane. Came here last month with my partner's family who were visiting and wanted to try some local eats. Tang Jip was a good choice considering the nice location, good price, and good reviews we saw. The restaurant is very nice and spacious, with a lot of booth and table seating inside and quite a bit of outside seating with an overhang for those sunny days. This was great for us because we also had a dog with us. However, we did have a few issues prior to us ordering and getting our food. First, while our party had already arrived and talked to one of the hosts, they went back inside and didn't get us menus, plates, bowls, napkins, etc. to set up a table until about 10 minutes later when we just decided to pick one. We also asked to turn on one of the heaters near our table since it was evening and getting chilly, and it took a bit of time (our food was already coming out by this point) to get that up and running. Lastly, while those I can chock up to being minor issues at worst, there was a weird interaction regarding getting some free drinks that they advertised in a exchange for a Yelp review. When we said we already checked in online and would do a review after, they insisted we do it then and there for the deal and one of the waiters actually stood and watched us (to make sure we did it?) and that we specifically gave 5 stars before our meal, which we felt pressured to do by that point (which I ultimately deleted afterwards before doing this re-review). It's a shame that there was that offputting moment in a otherwise great meal. While the waiters told us that the set combos they advertised were specifically meant for one person, they were more than enough for 2/3 to share and getting 2 sets for our table of 5 + an appetizer had us stuffed. The SoonTofu stew was hot and hearty while the bulgogi was nicely charred and they gave a ton to eat. This + the amount of banchan, which to their credit gave us more of, was delightful. A dinner for 5 being less than $100 is a great value in these times where it's harder to justify eating out at all. Ultimately the food made up for a strange beginning and would still recommend this as a great dinner spot. read more

Hubby and I had been meaning to try Tang Jip ever since it replaced Bowl'd and finally had a chance yesterday at lunch with some friends. The staff working here are Korean so I knew the food was going to be good and authentic. You don't interact with the staff much because there's a tablet for ordering. We ordered their rose tteokbokki, soy garlic chicken wings, galbijjim, seafood pancake, and kimchi fried rice. The food came out piping hot and fresh! We agreed that the kimchi fried rice was the star, but I also loved their rice cakes, both in the tteokbokki and galbijjim. The texture was perfectly chewy and I really enjoyed the rose tteokbokki sauce. I wasn't a big fan of the wings, the flavor was okay but the one I ate was a bit dry. The seating for me was a little uncomfortable because I sat on the side of the table with booth seating. It wasn't long enough for me to sit comfortably so if I return, I'll likely ask for a table with normal chairs. read more

My partner and I ordered the Galbijim with cheese. They blow torch the cheese in front of you. The meat was juicy, sweet and I liked the chewy rice cakes and veggies that came with the galbi. Came on a Saturday night and they were pretty packed inside. Since they rebranded from Bowl'd, it seems like they cut down the menu a lot. The spicy pork bulgogi was more sweet than spicy -almost like a Chinese sweet and sour pork and overly saucey. Husband liked the combo tang (season to taste). Soon Dubu was standard fare. Tdeokkbokki was probably the best dish. There's tablets on the table for ordering and requesting your check-which I can see saves extra staffing-but it left us waiting awhile for our check and for water. Second time back since the changeover from Bowl'd. First time with the new room divider and wall mural. No more salmon bibimbap but they have spicy seafood and it was quite good. Clams, mussels, bay shrimp and squid. Great daikon, sprouts and mushrooms. I like how they have the cold barley tea in a canister to serve yourself - bowl'd only offered water. Less banchan - but all were done well especially the kimchi. Service was attentive. There is a tablet on each table, you can order there or with a server. Seasoning levels are mild and you can add gochujang as you please. I didn't feel dehydrated or thirsty after the meal. Tang Jip is where my companion took me for my birthday lunch. I've always told him I regretted not trying spicy raw marinated crab when I was in South Korea. He wanted to take me here to try it since he knew I was curious. We came to this location of Tang Jip on a weekday afternoon. I can't speak much for the inside since we sat outside with my pup. But the inside seemed pretty spacious and modern. The outside was breezy and decent amount of space between tables. They took good care of my pup but had limited interactions with us in terms of checking on us. The food came out staggered. We shared the Kimchi Pancake, Pork Bulgogi, and Yangnyeom Gejang. The kimchi pancake was good, tasted typical to others. The bulgogi was also tasty, flavorful, spiced, and well cooked. Now for what I was most excited about, the crab! It was so spicy and well flavored. The texture was super soft almost like jelly. It was hard to wrap my head around but it tasted great with rice. Companion and I both agreed we were fans of the portion size and left stuffed! Tang Jip took over Bowl'd and is a great spot for Korean food in Alameda. I am happy they opened one of this Korean restaurant in this plaza! I quite enjoyed their food and the comfortable seating. The servers were kind and patient. The food arrived hot and delicious. I ordered the Galbitang, Kimchi Fried Rice, Combination Soon Tofu, Korean Fried Chicken (soy) and Bossam (small). My favorite dish was the Bossam. I made a lettuce wrap with the pork belly, veggies, sauces and kimchi banchan and it was A-mazingg!! Came here for dinner this evening. I've been here several times before and decided to bring my niece to try it. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with tonight's experience. The staff was not friendly, the service was slow, and the server was not attentive. That wasn't all. I ordered half an order of bossam, but was given half an order of jokbal instead. I didn't make a big fuss because I had wanted to try the dish eventually, so I decided to accept the order rather than complain. Secondly, the server brought us lettuce that was visibly half-rotten. I asked for a new batch, but it made me wonder how something like that could be served in the first place. Is there no quality control? Third, I asked for additional side dishes, but they were forgotten and weren't brought out until I asked a second time. What was most disappointing was the attitude throughout the meal. We were very polite and repeatedly said thank you whenever our food and dishes were brought out, yet we were met with stone-cold expressions and glares, with little to no response. I grew up in Alameda and this has always been one of my staples in South Shore. I've always defaulted to getting the bibimbap with beef...and it never misses! Really solid portions and I loved how fresh all the ingredients tasted (bean sprouts, sliced cucumber, mushrooms, carrots, pickled veggies, etc). We also got the seafood pancake (with real pieces of squid) which was also so incredibly delicious (and may have become my favorite), but it was a little more oily than I'd have liked. It kinda smelled like rice that was cooked with too much water and it was lacking in flavor. I came here because I needed something subtle for my upset stomach. Something not super flavorful, and something not super salty or Gracie, and something just hot and comforting. We don't have very much options for this type of Korean food, where they simmer in April until this broth becomes milky from bones, which takes a very long time, with portions of meat. It is an artisan style soup that takes a lot of time in low simmering heat, and diligence, to produce such a milky broth. If it's not salty enough, you can add your own salt to your liking. The meat are also perfectly cooked where they're still texture but yet soft enough to melt in your mouth. Pair it with a bowl of rice or just soup itself and you have yourself a perfect meal for an upset stomach. I really enjoyed their rice cake too with fish cake. It was extra chewy. The flavor was just right. it wasn't overly spicy and it came hot. I really enjoyed this place and would recommend it if you're craving hot soup. read more

One other party sat down a little after us. It's a trendy place with a large bar area with a large tv that was playing kpop videos. We ordered Galbi, chicken wings, and raw marinated crab. The raw marinated crab was good, that's the main reason we came. I've been craving it awhile. I wish they also offered soy marinated crab. Galbi was decent, it was slightly dry in my opinion but I liked the flavor. The chicken wings were good and there was a decent portion. What we thought was strange was that when we asked for a second round of ban Chan, they all seemed a little old. The potato salad seemed dried out and the radish weren't crunchy like the first round. Came here on a Thursday around 5pm, no wait no crowd, only two other parties came in after of us. This place is a popular chain and they have a location in Concord and Hayward I believe. I was super excited, because back then their food quality wasn't the best. With this new and improved Tang Jip, from food presentation and the taste... it definitely improved A LOT! The food had that comforting, authentic Korean feel that makes you want to come back and try more of the menu. This is located where the previous Bowl'd use to be and right across from Ohjane. The inside is actually really pretty, they decorated it nicely. The music is normal KPop with the TV display music videos that don't pair with the music. The lighting is very nice and there's a lot of distance between seating so it's not squished. The booths I would avoid if you're plus size above 18/20 then it'll be super uncomfortable. You need to order through the little touch screen. They're pretty hands off on interaction and don't check on you often unless it's to deliver the food or give you your check. We only ordered the shareable spicy beef short rib jjim. It's not spicy or even close to spicy. It's actually really sweet and we couldn't finish it bc we started to feel sick from how sweet it was. The pumpkin vegetable inside was undercooked. They add bell pepper to it which is the first time I've ever had this dish with. In general every single vegetable served in it was undercooked. We ordered the cheese on top but as you can see from my picture it was only just melted enough to not be formed and about 10min of the dish being served the cheese was no longer melted and just one glob that didn't pull. The cheese was just solid and we didn't bother eating it anymore. The meat itself was actually good if you only ate the meat and take off as much of the sauce possible otherwise it would be way too sugary. The rice was cold and mushy. The banchan itself, only the kimchi was worth eating. Every other part of the banchan was flavorless unless it was the kimchi. The kimchi was actually spicier than the "spicy" short rib we got. In the end, we stopped eating about 25% in because we didn't enjoy the food. From the pictures, you can see what we got, the food was gimmicky and we had to take the rest of the food home to remove the undercooked vegetables and use the beef with a different sauce and actually blow torch our own cheese. I don't recommend ordering any of the beef short rib shareables. It was way overpriced for under cooked vegetables, cold rice and a glob of cheese (the cheese was actually extra too). -1 star for the undercooked vegetables -1 star for charging extra for cheese they didn't put on correctly that it turned solid -1 star for how sugary the "spicy" dish was and how the banchan kimchi was actually spicer than the dish itself read more

We came here on Saturday for lunch. It used to be another Korean restaurant. The whole place looks remodeled. I love the flower light chandelier on the ceiling. We waited maybe 5 minutes for a table. They have ipads on each table for ordering your food. The menu is small so it didn't take long to decide. We ordered a seafood pancake and japchae. I like coming to Tang Jip for their lunch specials (weekdays 11a-2p), there's a menu for $12 entrees! The staff is friendly, the side dishes are good, and the interior is nice. Seollongtang (3.5/5) - I don't usually order this soup at Korean spots, but this was tasty. It's a milky, rich ox bone broth with noodles and brisket. Had the pleasure of enjoying a comfort meal here the other night. The restaurant seems small when you enter but as you walk down the rows of tables, there are actually more seats than you think! I really appreciate how some of the center seats have a a tall barrier between the left and right side tables. Upon being seated, I was offered hot tea or water and opted in for both. Of course I was very happy to find out that it's roasted barley tea, or booricha. It was piping hot, so definitely be patient before you sip on it! Each table was equipped with tablets for ordering so there's no need to wait for someone to take your order. I ordered the Spicy Wagyu Galbi Tang for $23 which also came with rice. The banchan (side dishes) came out shortly after I ordered my meal. They were served in quite large bowls. The banchan selection reminded me of being at my grandma's house. Very simple but delicious. The texture on the fish cake was exactly how I like it too, a bit chewier rather than too soft. My soup came out in about 15 minutes. It was served with two big beef ribs! The presentation was lovely with the shredded eggs and beef bones sticking out on both sides. The beef just about slid off the rib bone when I took my chopstick to it to try a piece! It was very tender, but a bit lacking in flavor. The broth itself was also a tad bit watery for my taste. I do think the portion size was worth the price. I did come maybe an hour and a half before closing so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt for the soup itself. read more

Didn't eat purple rice to leave room for banchan & broth. -soup ok. Bland tasting beef strips expected-all flava went into broth. Green onions & thin noodles also present. We assume it went bad, so we asked for the soup to be taken back and ordered a tofu soup instead Tofu soup - We were debating between beef or seafood, then we were told we could do a mix of both. We weren't aware it costed more to do mix until we saw the bill. Flavor-wise, it was decent then started to taste more salty Bibimbap - We got beef. This was okay Bossam - This was actually really good. Great flavor. We saw that it didn't come with lettuce, so we asked for some. They brought out a plate with three small lettuce pieces.. When we got our bill, it wasn't updated to reflect the tofu soup. When we asked to get it fixed, they brought back the bill with the updated item with an extra item added on there. Finally got the bill right on the third try. I always thought this restaurant was in an ideal spot at south shore. Spacious indoor seating. I'm not sure when the restaurant changed from bowl'd to tang jip, but I'd give it more time to make some improvements. My friend ate at the other locations and had positive experiences, so we were hoping this location would be the same. I'll go somewhere else to get my Korean food fix. read more
