Decided to try some chicken katsu at Tanaka. I was greeted when I entered and offered a menu at the counter. I ordered the standard plate and a self serve iced tea. I was given a table number and picked an open table to wait. Food arrived fairly promptly and looked delicious. Restaurant was not very crowded: however there were two very loud individuals sitting behind me discussing the latest movies. Overall it was a good quick service experience.
Ever since I came back from Japan I've been longing for the food I had there. And this place has it! The way they treat their tea, their desserts, their sandwiches... It's spot on! Thank you so much for the wonderful food and coffee and we will definitely be back again!
Stopped here for a quick bite with my husband. We ordered the Pork Katsu Plate and the Spicy Chicken Sandwich with a side of fries. Food took a minute but it was super fresh and cooked well. The Katsu Plate has a little of everything. The egg on the rice was a tad overcooked so we didn't get that runny yolk I was hoping for. The pork katsu was well flavored and yummy. I could leave the weird slaw though. Fries and the sauce that come with it were excellent. The star really is the sandwich. All of the components go well together. Also really love that they have the Stubborn soda. We caught a girl on her first day. She did great with answering my questions. Music was nice. Place was clean.
Stopped by after a walk nearby. The atmosphere was modern, with lots of wood. Service was very friendly. I went with the pork katsu sandwich with fries and a drink. The sandwich was good, but I think next time I'll try the spicy sauce option. That seems like it might turn up the flavor a notch. The fries were crispy and delicious, and the curry aioli was great as a dip. I can't remember what drink I selected, but I remember it was good, if a bit overloaded with ice. This place is good, and I'm curious to try their other offerings next time I'm in the area.
My first time trying this place and it was fine. The chicken curry was a large serving and the pickled cabbage and pepper were a nice complement to the heavy curry gravy and fried chicken. The tofu katsu sandwich was heavily sauced to the point where all you could taste were the sauces. The kale slaw was awesome -- very flavorful with a nice spice at the finish. I was alarmed to see that the plastic bag of curry sauce was just sitting in a hot pot of water; definitely a situation where the bag plastic would break down into the sauce. Seems like a poor food prep situation.
Recently visited Tanaka's location in Bridgeport Village. It is a new modern store, really beautifully decorated and well laid out with plenty of seating. Staff took a second to greet me, but were polite when taking my order at the counter. Food came out quickly and it was well packaged for a to-go order. I have not tried their curry, nor their sweets. I got a chicken and egg sandwich, as well as a tofu sandwich, and a side of fries. I think the sandwich could've used a hot sauce or some additional flavor to give it a wow factor. But everything was good overall.
Love the strong matcha flavor here, and they have so many options the strawberry matcha was rich and refreshing. I did add Splenda to mine to make it more sweet!
the staff at this location are super nice! especially the guy who was in the kitchen but came out with our food! he was attentive and kind :) the food itself was good. the curry was delicious but not much different from what I could make with box curry from the supermarket. I enjoyed the pork katsu which was not too fatty and still juicy. the breading was crunchy, light, and not too oily. the only thing is that the rice was overcooked and too wet. the fries with the curry aoli were heavenly. i'm not usually a sauce type of gal but I would come back just for this sauce. it had a nice kick and was a little acidic making it easy to eat and not too heavy.
Tired from shopping?? Stop by Tanaka for Japanese-inspired sandwiches! Located at Bridgeport, this location is great with plenty of seating. They are known for their katsu sandwiches - chicken, pork, fish, shrimp, and tofu options - there is lots of variety. Service is counter service, but they are efficient and fast. I got the chicken sando and it was great! The milk bread was soft and held up well - not soggy. The chicken was thin, lightly breaded, and not too oily. They also sell various Japanese pastries, but they didn't look too appealing. I'd stick with their sandwiches. I don't think they are better than the competitor in town - Tokyo Sando, but Tanaka is a great option for a quick bite in the area!
I have very mixed feelings. On the one hand, the location, the seating, especially when the weather is nice gives a wonderful outdoor ambience, especially if there's live music playing across the way. As for the food, the highlight was the egg salad for me. While I thought the sandwiches were unique and the curry rice plate was tasty. I'm just not a fan of the overall execution. 1. Curry was way too strong. I get one has to enjoy the curry with the rice or protein, but when you have to consciously pursue the mixture and can't enjoy the curry on its own, then something is off. 2. Why some people complain the curry is lukewarm or even cold is because they serve on a metal plate that is extremely cold to start with. I don't claim to know the reason, I just can feel the edges are very cold. As a result the curry cools down far too quickly, same for the katsu when initial contact is made with the plate. If you're going for make-to-order for goodness sake, have it piping hot... it should be part of the charm and experience. This is simple management not looking at every detail... the workers do what they are told. Totally brought the experience down several notches. 3. The ebi fry was not available. Prime Lunchtime on a bright sunny Sunday and you don't have a menu item? Hey it happens, but it shouldn't happen if a place is striving for excellence... so there you go... Enjoyed it, just definitely not a place I'd trek all the way to Bridgeport from Beaverton to visit often with this lack of execution. I've had my fair share of katsu and this style of sandwiches across the globe. This just isn't memorable.
I was shopping in Bridgeport today and walked past this place and the matcha poster on the wall got my attention immediately! When I got inside I ordered the Strawberry Matcha, Chicken Katsu Sando, and a curry bun. I've been to Oyatsupan in Beaverton, so I assumed the curry bun would be similar to their Curry Donut, but I realized it was not very soft at all, and the curry inside wasn't very good. My sandwich was pretty good, but the slaw on it mixed with the spicy sauce definitely carried the sandwich. The matcha was okay. I was definitely disappointed and probably won't order one again. I would rate the food and matcha a 4/10, the staff service a 10/10, and the ambiance a 10/10. Might return someday and try a donut!
The curry aioli with fries is SO addicting. I could eat... way too many of those. The yuzu cream donut was also delicious and had great texture. The chicken katsu sando was decent but definitely not the best I've had. The meat was a little dry and was pretty thin/sparse in the sandwich.
My wife and I are headed to Japan later this year; it'll be her first time, and I cannot wait to show all the wonderful sights, sounds and, of course, tastes! As a "preview of coming attractions", we stopped in for lunch at Tanaka while in the area; similarly, she had never had a katsu sando before, wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but was eager to find out. As she surprised me a bit and went with the chicken sando (which I WAS going to order) with a side of hot sauce, I switched to the potato korokke instead. Each of them was utterly incredible: in the case of the chicken, a delicious crispy fried chicken fillet with kewpie mayo and katsu sauce (which, for those who do not know, tastes like a BBQ soy sauce) and cabbage is pretty much to die for; as for the korokke, it's definitely softer (the potato/veggie "innards" of the croquette are creamy and smooth) punches above its weight with a tangy dressing drizzled over the cabbage. We couldn't decide upon our favorite among the two, and repeatedly shared bites of each. I would order either of them again (or both) in a heartbeat! Service was prompt, friendly, and extremely polite! The décor within is minimalist in true Japanese style, and benefits from natural light and gorgeous surroundings: at least during our visit, it was quiet, serene, peaceful...and when paired with the perfect weather, was like a silent oasis sequestered away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the shopping arcade. Even more than she was before, Tanaka has made my wife more excited for our trip to Japan, thanks to its authenticity (and deliciousness)! If you can't make it yourself to Japan, Tanaka will get you half way there, flavor-wise.

Japanese sandos have been super popular here in Portland and Tanaka is the place to try it! They have a variety of options to choose from starting with their classic chicken or pork sandwiches. They also have asian inspired pastry options too which was so refreshing to see! I loved the Spicy Tonkatsu sando, the Miso Caesar salad, and Miso Chocolate chip cookie! The Yuzu filled doughnut was also scrumptious! read more
I've been here twice now since they opened and am a fan since I no longer have to venture to Portland for their sandos. The sandwiches are really filling and are great for sharing since they cut it in half. My only gripe is the katsu is a really thick cut of pork. It's cooked really well and remains juicy all the way through but the pork to bread ratio is a little off for my liking. I also tried the yuzu donut which was SO good. The yuzu cream is light which makes the donut not too sweet or heavy. I like how spacious the place is too. Lots of seating inside and outside that looks over the center area of Bridgeport mall. I'm glad more pdx businesses are expanding out to the suburbs because parking can be such a pain in the butt downtown. Hoping more businesses will follow suite. read more

The place is pretty busy, and we put our order in and none of the workers seemed to be very happy about being there, which made the experience a little kind of offputting. We got the chicken, Katsu, Sando, and the pork katsu sando. The sandwiches had a decent flavor, but the meat was a bit on the driver side and also pretty small overall. The Katsu wasn't very crispy. We also got the toasted egg sandwich literally just tasted like unseasoned eggs. It was pretty creamy though. The service was also a bit chaotic as our food is ready, and I saw the server make a few laps until I finally decided to chase her down to get my order. I will say the chocolate donut was really good. The nice part about being inside Bridgeport is there was lotta sitting outside, but even where we sat outside of the Restaurant area due to it being full there's a lot of pees everywhere so be careful. read more
Overall rating: 3.5/5 I came in on a Monday around 11AM and it was rather quiet. You could walk up and order so if you're looking to try tanaka for the first time, I'd come in on a weekday if you can. Despite it being a slow time, the food took around 15 minutes to come out. Then again, I wouldn't quite consider this fast food. The spicy chicken sandwich was filling and good but not great. Probably not something I'd ever crave. The katsu nuggets were good as the proportion of breading to chicken was *chefs kiss* I was pretty skeptical about the curry aoli but it ended up being pretty tasty! The fries were bussin and they crispy which is a + but pretty darn salty. Chocolate donut was mousse-y and didn't quite remind me of chocolate but it was different! Chocolate chip miso cookie = too salty I'm looking forward to trying their brunch sandos next time around read more
I came on a Monday afternoon and it was surprisingly very packed with no open tables. I was excited to finally try Tanaka but was left with several disappointments. 1. The time it took to wait in line to order and receive my two items took over an hour. 2. It was around 12:30 PM and they told me they were already out of fries. 3. The prices are quite outlandish... $5 for a single cookie? 4. Both the pork katsu and katsu nuggets were very dry. The curry aioli sauce was my favorite and helped with the dryness. read more

Came on a Sunday afternoon, and there was no line! Got the Spicy Pork Katsu, and I enjoyed the spicy sauce. It made the sandwich moist, but the pork cutlet was relatively small. There was a lot more bread than pork which was disappointing as it was $15 for the sandwich alone. The fries were great! Crispy and well seasoned, I would recommend to pair with. It came with a curry aioli which was tasty. Came with a drink as well for an additional $5. read more
Nice spot for lunch or a snack while shopping. Plenty of seating inside and out. The ambiance is chill and casual and the smell of fresh baked shokupan fills the air. They have a great selection of desserts and pastries, I'd like to try the ichigo strawberry sando. I liked that they had a yuzu lager on draft as well as Kirin in a can. The katsu sandos were good, although I was a little let down by the protein to shokupan ratio. We both got non-spicy sandos but the mustard blew both of our sinuses out!! It was super overwhelming. It was also a bit off putting that an employee eating on their lunch break got up to deliver food without washing their hands. Bottom line, if you've had TokyoSando before, don't come here expecting it to be the same or you will be let down. read more

Having recently been to Japan, was looking forward to some good sandwiches. Tanaka is a new edition to Bridgeport Village right in the center of the square. They have a number of sandwiches available including pork katsu (regular or spicy) which is my favorite. Other options include chicken katsu, tofu, fish. There are also some pre-made fruit sandwiches and egg salad. A little salty possibly, but a good lunch. I think sandwiches were somewhere in the $17 range which is a little more than I would expect for a lunch sandwich. They have several bakery options and coffee. Soft drinks are self-service - Stubborn soda brand. The ambience is nice. Large area of seating inside and then an outside area as well. Open kitchen and you can see staff preparing food. Staff were friendly. You go in, order at the counter, get a number, sit and then food is brought to you. Definitely a nice option! read more

This is their second location that just opened up in Bridgeport. I liked that they had both indoor and outdoor seating. This location is also counter service. They had a variety of hot items to order from, and the selection of pastries were limited. We had a grilled cheese sandwich, chicken katsu sandwich, fries, and a chocolate donut. The food was pretty good, and the donut was a great way to finish up the meal. read more

I've finally got to try a Japanese sando! I went here with my friend. The restaurant is counter service and you bus your own tables. They got a case of additional pastries like donuts and fruit sandos. I ordered the spicy pork katsu sando. I made it a "combo" which included the fries and a soda. The sandwich itself is soooo good except I probably won't get the spicy next time. It has a wasabi-like taste which I'm not a fan of. The pork itself was nice and crispy. The bread was soft and tasty. The fries were amazing! Super crunchy. It came with a sauce on the side that had a zing to it. My biggest complaint is their prices. Very expensive for what it is. Service could be friendlier too. The lady who took my order didn't look super happy and wasn't very friendly. Tip: They give you $15 off for your birthday if you sign up with their rewards system. read more
Recently stopped by here for a quick bite in the area because I was so hungry and I thought that it was alright. When I came in, it was fairly empty and quiet. The inside is very spacious with lots of seating for big and small groups, and very clean (there's also outdoor seating)! I ordered a fish sando and fries, and although it wasn't bad, it wasn't particularly anything spectacular. It really just felt like a chained, fast-food food spot with mediocre quality. read more
I have been wanting to try one of these places for awhile and I am glad I did! It was so delicious!! Too bad I don't live near one of these or else I would spend money all the time lol. Both of The Spicy Katsu Sandos that I ordered were so yummy. I preferred the tofu one just because it was lighter but the chicken one did taste spicier. The strawberry sando was so good!! It was not too sweet. I do think it would be better tasting if it was fresh but nonetheless it was still good. Overall I would come back in the area!! I ordered the pork katsu sando and my friend ordered the chicken katsu sando. Hers came with egg salad and mine didn't and I love egg salad. I wish I had gotten egg salad. The pork katsu was crispy on the outside and not tough at all. I really enjoyed my sandwich and eating half was enough. read more
Pretty tasty sandwiches here. Fish katsu was delicious rockfish battered and fried to perfection, chicken katsu was cooked a little longer than expected, a little tough but still good, and lastly the French fries were crunchy goodness. Nice, clean and very busy place on a Sunday afternoon. Had the Pork Katsu Sando which was delicious! Large piece of succulent and juicy pork in a Katsu sauce with a hint of wasabi on toasted milk bread, 5 stars!. The ceasar salad was fresh with large milk bread croutons which were not special however the miso ceasar dressing was quite nice. Had a yuzu doughnut which disappointed. The yuzu cream was tasty but the doughnut itself was pretty dense and tough, 2 stars. read more
I do want to say the inside was incredible clean and a great environment. The service was great but when it came to the food..... I was a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong the spicy chicken sandwich tasted great but the size/portion you get is incredibly underwhelming. Keep in mind this combo meal was $22 and I was still hungry, the sandwich alone is $15 and don't get me wrong it tastes good but the portion isn't at ALL worth $15. Overall I'd say try this place out, it's good but for how pricey it is and how much sandwich you get it's definitely going to be a once in a blue moon place. read more
Super happy a little slice of Japanese comfort food + Portland flare have made their way to Bridgeport Mall! 〰SPICY CHICKEN KATSU Spicy is right! Crispy, delicious, and moist chicken katsu Sando with kale slaw and shishito ranch topped with a spicy katsu sauce! Such a treat. At first a little sweet and then the spice sneaks up on you! Really really good. The home made shokupan bread was good too. It was pretty pricey though, at $15 for the Sando alone.... 〰DIRTY FRIES Their original crispy fries are good! They're like the breaded extra crispy kind that come with fish & chips, ya know? We upgraded, and got the dirty fries which comes with smoked pulled pork, delicious curry sauce, American cheese, crispy cilantro and parm. I would definitely see myself getting this again and craving this in the winter months. The crispy cilantro had a really fun texture but I just cannot do cilantro. So I'd skip it next time. The curry is so warm, flavorful and delish. Again, a little spendy. Since everything is ala carte They were all sold out of their dessert items when we went! Which made me soooo sad. first time here and we were really disappointed! pork katsu sando - meat was dry. spicy fish katsu sando - the slaw overpowered the sando. i would've preferred less slaw because it was drenched in sauce. Matcha White Chocolate Cookie - wasn't mentioned that there was yuzu flavor in there also. i would not recommend the cookie. it was hard, cold, and the yuzu flavor overpowered the matcha. ambiance - loud music. spacious and clean interior. service - they do bring out the food, but it's mainly self service. you get your own drinks and put away your dishes read more

My brother and I came here before watching a movie and there needs to be more traffic here cause it's very good. We both got chicken katsu sandwiches and an order of fries. The sandwiches were delicious. Flavorful and crispy with some great spice from the spicy katsu sauce. The fries were also great, and they were served with what I thought was mustard, but tastes like a curry spice fry sauce and is incredible. While we were eating, the server brought over a desert dish called Honey Toast that they are going to be serving soon, and we were very fortunate to be the first to try it. It had ice cream, a green tea whipped cream, red bean paste, strawberries and honey on toasted bread. It was easily the most delicious thing we had today. If you get anything, the honey toast was a must buy. The service was excellent , the place is clean and has a nice chill vibe. Great place to stop by after shopping or before/after a movie. read more

Fun spot to take a shopping break in the heart of Bridgeport Village. Came in to try their Pork Katsu sandwiches, and coming with some friends that love spicy food, we split the sandos- the four of us sharing 2 sandwiches and a side of fries. I really enjoyed the spicy one, it had wasabi in it to give its kick. You could tell you were getting juicy pork inside! Would like to try the nuggets next time, to try more of their sauces! Personal star of the show fave was the curry aioli that came with the fries. The fries themselves had a great crisp to them. There's a really fresh interior design with the hanging plants and wood, and the staff seem to work in a great team even under stressful rush hours. read more
So I just started a new Job. I am now working at the CVS PHARMACY in Lake Oswego. I am super psyched about it...i have the knowledge already, just have to go though the traditional training procedures. On Monday I was sitting at the computer doing those fun learning modules when the staff pharmacist put a cool gold and white plate down next to me. It had something that resembled Saturn that you might expect in a solar system display, except instead of rings it has a ring of what appeared to be fluffy goodness around it. "Cream Puff", she said. I was like, "Alrighty then". After a couple minutes I couldn't take it anymore. I took a bite. It was delicious the cream was well creamy but it tasted like there was crystallized sugar and maybe some chocolate chips in there too. The pastry itself was amazing. It was firm to the tooth at first, but then it seemed to melt away into nothing. I didn't have a napkin but I managed. I will definitely be making a visit in person soon. read more

We really wanted to like this place but the food was lacking. They were out of the majority of their pastries so we didn't get to try that. The service was good and the ambiance was nice and clean. The staff members were helpful and friendly. The low score just reflects that poor food taste. read more

I recently dined at Tanaka in Bridgeport Mall and had the chicken katsu sandwich with egg salad, fries with curry dip, and a fountain drink. The sandwich was decent, earning a 7.5 out of 10, but it felt a bit plain without additional sauce. The fries, served with a tasty curry dip, were a highlight, though I would have liked a larger portion. The fountain drink didn't quite hit the mark as it didn't taste like Dr. Pepper. Overall, the meal was enjoyable but on the pricier side. Next time, I'd explore more sauce options to enhance the flavor. Over probably would only go again if I was in the area, but I am glad I tried it. read more
Got the chicken katsu sandwich with the french fries. Pretty good place to eat. The wait is longer than expected but it was a busy weekend. The fries had different and unique sauces you can try them with. All which were delicious. I'm comparing this to Tokyo Sando and I would say Tokyo sando is 5 stars and this would be 4 stars if that helps. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while, but honestly, it fell a bit short of my high expectations. Firstly I loved the nice ambience - the lights and vibe of the restaurant were on point. I ordered the Tanaka dip - it was tasty but not worth $16 for a sandwich. It was also a bit peppery which I didn't expect and I'm not a fan of spicy food. Also, the drinks in general were quite expensive - I wanted a matcha but didn't order it since it was $6-7. Overall I liked the sandwich but not enough to go again. read more
