I can walk there, grab a cold beer, and be slurping noodles in no time -- which honestly feels like a lifestyle upgrade. The tonkotsu ramen is rich, comforting, and exactly what you want when you sit down. Bonus points for letting you add extra noodles, because sometimes the bowl should match your mood. The spicy garlic edamame is borderline addictive and should be ordered every single time without discussion. And on days when hot soup isn't the move, the poke bowl comes in clutch as a lighter but still very satisfying option. We've been to Fat Kitty four times now, and on each of our previous visits we really enjoyed the food. In fact, it was quickly becoming one of our favorite ramen spots in Portland. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was very different. Everything we ordered was extremely salty -- to the point where it was difficult to eat. We started with the pot stickers, which had a heavy coating of seasoning on the outside. It looked similar to Lawry's seasoning salt. When I mentioned it to our server, she explained that the coating is their house-made togarashi. I'm a big fan of togarashi, but this tasted quite different from what I'm used to. Rather than make a big deal of it, we decided to move on and looked forward to the ramen, which we've loved in the past. We both ordered our usual: the spicy miso ramen. Unfortunately, the broth was so salty that neither of us could finish it. It was really disappointing, especially since we've enjoyed this dish so much on previous visits. We mentioned this to our server because we genuinely wondered if something might have gone wrong in the kitchen that night. We explained that we're fans of the restaurant and that the ramen tasted much saltier than anything we had experienced there before. She assured us it was the same recipe they always use. I suggested that perhaps the seasoning blend used on the pot stickers might also have affected the ramen, but she didn't seem interested in passing the feedback along. When I asked if she might check with the kitchen or try the broth herself, she simply replied, "I'm good." Our bill came to about $75 with tip for pot stickers, two spicy miso ramens, a beer, and a Diet Coke. We truly hope this was just an off night, because we've really enjoyed Fat Kitty in the past. But based on this experience, we're not sure we'll be returning. read more

I won't be returning here, but hopefully this feedback helps. When we visited, seven tables were seated: two had finished and were waiting to pay for too long, the rest (including ours) were waiting with no food. That's right, a restaurant where no tables had food on them. After 20 minutes, two tables got appetizers and it was another 20 before any other tables got anything. We ordered edamame, but it was mushy and inedible. It seems they keep it sitting in a large vat instead of flash-cooking it fresh, which really showed. Most of the kitchen's focus seemed to be on takeout orders while dine-in guests were left waiting. It's possible they were short-staffed (from other reviews this might just be how they staff), but if that's the case, they should either limit or temporarily shut off online orders, or at least let customers know upfront that food will be delayed. As it stands, table service felt like an afterthought. If they want to keep dine-in, they'll need to balance it better with takeout or just commit fully to being a ghost kitchen. We ended up walking out after 45 minutes and just being served the mushy edamame. They were nice/gracious and didn't charge. read more

I really wanted to like this small neighborhood spot. The restaurant and wait staff are fine. I was excited to try the shoyu ramen. It's always nice when I can find a vegetarian soup... but this ramen was incredibly salty. I couldn't finish my broth. I did't find myself seeking out the mushrooms, even. Well, I tried to give these guys one last chance to win back my business. I'm currently disabled and can't drive so delivery is a real treat. I ordered delivery an hour before they closed, and 1/2 before yelp says they stop taking delivery orders. The delivery is now 20 minutes late (over an hour since I ordered despite the fact I'm a little over a mile away), the restaurant doesn't answer their phone and they are now closed. Their table service isn't much better. When I was able to do dine in the last time I was there they took 15 minutes to bring us ramen and there were only 2 other patrons besides us. I think this will be another failed business in the village soon. Too bad. They had such potential, but customer service goes a long way. My wife and I tried this spot for the first time, and left very happy. We were greeted enthusiastically and seated right away. Water came instantly, and the carafe was refilled quickly. Staff were both friendly and professional. The menu is quite limited, but we found something to our liking. We both had the curry Ramen, which is one of the few without pork products, and we shared the tots. They were both fantastic, beautifully prepared and presented and absolutely delicious. The ambience is minimalist, new, and very clean. The prices are nice round numbers, and you can pay with Mobile Toast from your phone. We'll definitely be back. read more

Came here for an early dinner on a rainy cold day. We tried an assortment of dishes. The potstickers were the best we've ever had. The spicy red miso was just ok - it's super spicy (I wouldn't want it any hotter!), doesn't have seaweed, and the meat isn't chashu like most ramen but is pork belly so very fatty. The tonkatsu was just ok - not as much flavors going on, and again, lots of fat (I'm just not into that but get that lots of people enjoy it). Between our family members we ordered three different kinds, all of them were too salty, and even the salt fiends in our group found the broth to be too salty. Hey, we were so excited to find the OG okonomiyaki tots (and, of course, some great ramen), and we tried to stop in this evening in Multnomah Village. We walked into a 65% empty restaurant and were told (with a bit of an eyeroll, it seemed) that it would be over an hour wait because there were over 100 takeout orders in queue. Seems like a poor business model--if you want to be a ghost kitchen, be a ghost kitchen, but don't be a full service restaurant that isn't interested in actual sit-down customers. We walked away wanting not so much to come back sometime, but to make a grocery list for an Uwajimaya run to make our own damn okonomiyaki tots. Boxer Ramen was not like that, you walked in, ordered, and like magic there would be a table around the time your food was ready, like some other great iconic casual restaurants in Portland that are still successful on that model today (and that get our business embarrassingly often). I was terribly disappointed to be treated like wanting to eat your food was a ridiculous pursuit not worth your time because I actually wanted the experience of eating the food fresh and hot in a restaurant rather than lukewarm out of plastic while I watched TV. read more
