I was looking for a hot breakfast and I'm so glad I came here. I ordered the egg plate, which came with 'potato mash' and thick toast. I also had the regular drip coffee. The price wasn't amazing, but wasn't outrageous either. The decor was very cool and...metallic. Lots of stools, gears on the wall, etc. Modern as heck. I would have appreciated some more options for seats with backs on them, as everyone who came in wanted to sit against the wall, so that area was a little crowded. Can I tell you that I've never had black coffee that I liked? Ever? Until now. This coffee was smooth enough that I didn't need to add anything and it tasted like coffee is probably supposed to taste. The eggs were fine, but could have used a bit of salt - and there were no shakers on the tables, which was a little strange (but I get it at the same time). The toast was great and super hearty, and it came with butter already on it, which is always a treat. The mash was out of control. So simple but so good. There was some seasoning that I couldn't place, and I appreciated that they kept the skins on the potatoes. Although I love home fries with eggs, this was a great substitution. Overall I was very pleased with my experience here! Would definitely go back if I'm in the area again. read more

Sometimes I just want to sit in a pretty coffee shop for the sake of sitting in a pretty coffee shop. Tamper is just the place to do this (and eat too, probably the more important function!) The quinoa was (though expen$ive) very delicious (the almonds in it really added great flavor!) and I've heard the oatmeal will convert even the most oatmeal-hating grumps into oatmeal fanatics! This is hands down our go-to coffee shop, mid-day lunch spot and "stop into see friends" weekend hang-out. They get their espresso just right, make the perfect cappuccino and the staff is incredibly friendly, always recognizing the "regulars". The decor is simple and modern at the same time, both conducive to meeting others at the table or alowing you to sip coffee and work if you need quiet focus time. They recently expanded their food offerings and I know they get their produce from neighborhood farm Plough & Stars Project in Lincoln, Mass. that gives all their cuisine such great farm-fresh flavor. They also recently got a liquor license, so I am excited to be able to join later in the evenings for a glass of wine and tapas. Now that school is in session, many students frequent Tamper, one of the few cafes near the campus. I can usually find a seat easily but noise levels may vary. Service can be slow during peak hours but my drinks are worth the wait. Their pistachio matcha bread is very delicious and a non guilty pleasure! read more

Is it a bit pretentious? A bit unsure of what it wants to be? A bit pricy? Probably, but Tamper definitely fills a much-needed void for quality coffee and updated decor/menu items in the Medford area, and is a perfect spot to work on projects or assignments comfortably, with a strong wifi connection. Some of my favorite things on the menu; -cold brew: basic, but good, and they give you a lot more of it than other places do -french toast: I would call this good if I got it at a legitimate sit down restaurant, hotel, in New York City, or anywhere else for that matter. It's good. The brioche is fluffy, but not soggy (anymore) and the apple butter on the side is delicious. It's also on the menu all week now, which is exciting! -avocado smash: I think what i really love about Tamper is the thick, crusty brioche that they use. Without it, this dish wouldn't be nearly as good as it is, but that being said, the ratio of avocado/toast is perfect, and the pumpkin seeds on top give it a nice crunch. -mushroom goat cheese quiche: This item is only on the menu every once in a while, but when it is--get it!! It's delicious and a perfect portion size, with a not-overdressed salad on the side. read more

Honestly? The number of positive reviews for this place surprises me. I have eaten here a couple times, and each time I have found their food to be overpriced, under-portioned, and -- worst of all -- bland! (The place was too convenient for me to write it off after only one disappointing meal) Their breakfast sandwich is bland. Their hummus sandwich is bland. And small. And pricey. It's a cool-looking place, with exposed bricks and pipes, long communal tables, and a big chalkboard with a menu on it. Maybe their coffee is good enough for the too-good-for-the-Dunkin-Donuts-down-the-block crowd, but as a place to grab a bite and some wifi with friends it's a real letdown. read more

Had to meet a friend here the other day- not often that I'm in Medford. This is a cool little place. I loved the industrial look and all the Edison bulbs. Seems like a good venue to enjoy a drink and people watch. I got the chicken club, my fiancé got the French toast. Both were great, especially the club. Had house-made mayo which was delicious and the focaccia bread was just as good. Prices were a tad steep but at least the food didn't disappoint. I wouldn't mind stopping in here again. We came during late morning, which seemed ideal, because I'd anticipate Tamper is filled with Hipsters each night, haha. read more

I've been popping in here every so often for nearly two years and they've yet to disappoint. The owner is friendly, the service is good, and they've got vegan options - although I were there were a couple more. And while I'm not sure what their official stance on dogs is, they've allowed me to bring mine in while ordering to-go. This is a lovely place for lunch or a light bite anytime. Their cold brew coffee is amazing. I make awful coffee, so I look forward to my (almost) daily iced coffee. The place has a great vibe, lots of buzz but not loud, and the decor is wonderful. The egg on mashed is pure comfort food, and their cookies, lemon bread and scones are tasty (I used to hate scones). I don't know why this place is popular! Ordered a "mac attack" sandwich, which is a ridiculous misnomer. It was literally four slices of toast soaked, assembled with a few slices of avocado and some sundried tomatoes. I truly don't understand all of the positive reviews, perhaps explained by the fact that the surrounding area is a food desert (other than DPH). The atmosphere is definitely pleasant, but the food is so overpriced and underwhelming. TINY portions of something I could easily make myself (yoghurt, cucumber and avocado on white bread) for $8-$9. There is definitely a greater use of space and the drip coffee (I'm not the fancy latte type) definitely was superior and a better value as well. I love it here. A spacious chill breakfast/lunch place with interesting foods is so lacking in the area! It is walk up and order but they bring food to you. I love that they have real ceramic and metal utensils. Came today with a big group and lingered talking for quite a while while our delicious breakfast settled. Love the clean and minimalist decor. But even though they are full of people working and studying, they only have one set of outlets that are inaccessible to 3/4 of the room. Fantastic eatery just outside of Tufts University. Good prices and good portions. I loved the quinoa bowl. It had a lot of flavor and all sort of healthy stuff in it (almonds, red onions, cabbage) It was especially good with the chipotle salsa which comes with the quesadilla.
