I was so happy to stumble upon this coffee shop while I was near the Tufts University campus. When I arrived, it was packed. But by the time I ordered my coffee, a seat opened up at the window. There were lots of great seating options from family style tables to smaller tables for 2. I sat at the window bar and enjoyed the view (and people watching). I stopped by to pick up a warm drink and I was pleasantly surprised by what a spacious cafe this is and the amount of food and beverage options available! It's basically on Tufts campus but it's not only students who will come. I can see how this would be a great spot to study and to meet up with friends at. I ordered a hot chai latte with oat milk, and it was good! I like my lattes actually hot and not warm, so this was perfect. Nice cafe with lots of options. The mocha with house made chocolate syrup is delicious and not too sweet with a rich dark chocolate flavor. Stumbled into this place after looking up breakfast spots in the neighborhood (still new and exploring!). It's pretty spacious inside with long tables and stools and some tables for two with padded backs. We ordered two egg plates with one including a sausage patty. The eggs were well seasoned and filling. Patty was a sweet/spicy mix of pork sausage. Came with thick sour dough bread toasted to perfection. We also ordered a blueberry scone that was dynamic. Asked for it to be warmed up and they couldn't do that but the scone was a hit. Large blueberries provided a fulfilling flavor. read more

My favorite, favorite, favorite neighborhood cafe for breakfast, friends and colleagues conversation, and work time. Clean, vibrant plant life, an eclectic record soundtrack, and bike races broadcast-projected on the wall constitute the vibe. Coffee-wise, they pull double-sized single shots of espresso and warn you kindly if you ask for a double. In my top three for house-made scones of in the area - the buttery plain ones with plump, tart cranberries is the chef's kiss, for sure, and they sell out early. The avocado toast is avocado mashed-whipped with feta topped with untoasted pepitas on thick, buttered sourdough, another favorite. The breakfast quesadilla is a beautiful cheesy-melt, smothered-in-onions monster. Jason, Pedro, and the rotating staff of Tufts students and other young people are wonderfully hospitable. read more

A quick walk from tufts campus, a solid place for sizable portions of good food! Most notably, BLT had a fantastic house sauce that didn't overpower the simplicity of the sandwich, and the avocado toast with the sun dried tomatoes was a creamy burst of flavor. The latte was great with a bit of honey and whole milk, a huge cup. The baristas were helpful in their recommendations! They did inform me that they don't have any syrups, if you're into flavored drinks, and their alternative milks are only oat. Plenty of space to sit with very large windows and outlets for students to study and people to chat. read more

Very cute cafe with options that are lighter fare. A friend and I came after hot yoga and appreciated not leaving feeling bloated or heavy.. The interior is beautifully decorated, and the staff is amazing. Lattes and drinks are priced a little bIt more that similar establishments, but I did enjoy my latte. Add ons to you meal do cost a bit more, expect to pay around $12-$15 for a meal and a hot drink. Plenty of space to sit and do work, and there is street parking. read more

A really nice cafe with plenty of seating and a chill atmosphere. Came here on a Saturday at 12:30pm and it was packed with students, most likely due to lunch rush. After about a half hour, the place started to really clear up and you can definitely find seating if you planned to sit there for a while. I got a latte and it was super good - can see why this cafe ranked so highly in Eater Boston's "Best Coffeehouses in Boston" list. Minimalist, cozy Tufts student-dominated coffee spot with great coffee and cookies. The service was friendly and prompt - felt like a Brooklyn outpost I was happy to stumble upon in Medford. I took a meeting here with my colleague, and came early to get some head's down work done. The music set a great ambiance to focus, and the decor is simple (great for those of us with adhd), with indoor / outdoor seat options and great light. I discovered Tamper about a year ago and was pleasantly surprised at how great the food is. I usually get the breakfast quesadilla which is absolutely delicious. The cappuccino is like no other place--the espresso is rich, with depth and light on milk. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I'm still thinking of the egg on potato mash I got from Tamper. It's not a complicated dish; it's literally just an egg on top of mashed potatoes with salt and cheddar. It could honestly have used a bit more cheddar in my opinion too. But the mash was so nice and warm and the parts that were seared nicely were pleasant to eat. Add some cheddar and some egg yolk and I am easily satisfied. I also got a flat white and iced chai from Tamper, but I'm not the biggest coffee buff so I don't have much to say on those beverages. They were both pretty good (the chai in particular was sweet and creamy and not watery at all). The speed at which the beverages were served was also pretty good. My biggest complaint with Tamper was actually the lack of AC. Maybe the fact that it was hot and humid outside and the coffee house was packed just made things worse. But other than that, I had a great time at Tamper. I actually came here on a date and left feeling pretty satisfied with choosing Tamper as the location. read more

I think Tamper is a very comfortable place. Makes brunch a simple, pleasant experience. Good light from the main window and enough tables for most- though groups larger than 4 are gonna have a hard time finding a spot unless they snag a larger, shared table in the middle. Drinks were good quality. French Toast seemed overpriced to not come with some fruit or yogurt or something on the side, but food options are diverse. I got a cappuccino with oat milk here and really struggled to get through half of it... I hate to leave food/drink unfinished but I had to give up because it was just so unpleasant. The coffee had a stunningly acidic bite to it that made it hard to swallow and gave me an almost acid reflux burn in my throat afterwards (my boyfriend tried it too and agreed). Was sitting down for about 5 minutes before someone came over and told me I couldn't sit there bc I was working on a computer. They have designated "no computer" tables for some odd reason. This place is so minimalistic, but has everything you need for a coffee shop. Free Wi-Fi, free parking, and ample table space. I really like how they had long benches rather than individual tables, it really gave a sense of community. I'm sure many tufts students come here all the time. I ordered a simple latte, and it took them over 10 minutes to get it done. There weren't that many people in the store. I came here for a meeting, and my coworkers said the food was delicious. One of them got the avocado toast, which she raved about. The other got breakfast tacos, which was a little messy and spicy, but she really enjoyed. I come to tamper at least 1-2 times a week to work. Their food is high quality and tasty, and the same can be said for their coffee! They have a lot of unique offerings that stray from your typical coffee shop. The seating is family style long tables, with a few small tables for small groups. It can get VERY packed with tufts students but if you go there alone to work on your laptop there is always a single seat. You quickly forget you're sitting at a table surrounded by other people! They also play great music so I don't have to bring headphones. It's a fantastic place to go to get work done, or if you time it right, eat with a friend. read more

Nice little place that's perfect to get a bite and get some work done using their free wifi. There is a lot of crowd in this place most of whom seemed like Tufts students working on their assignments or just catching up. They have filter coffee and excellent scones. Parking can be a bit tough but there's 2 hr free parking spots on the streets if you get lucky. Wish they would take the old plates back as they brought out new food items. We tried a bunch of different items from the menu most of which were phenomenal but our table was covered with empty plates by the end. read more

Great little place for a quick delicious breakfast. I was here for a Tufts admissions session, and this place was about 100 yards down the road. The menu is surprisingly diverse. We had a tasty egg sandwich and some sort of home fries plate. Both were solid. And they make a legit sunny side up egg! They have a full coffee bar, they have wine and beer, and they even have empire soda. And lots of space for people working on laptops and other studying. read more

Boston Avenue needed Tamper. Don't get me wrong - I'm as much a fan of cheap and greasy 'wiches as the next "can't tell if you're a professor or an undergrad," fresh-faced intellectual. Truly. But the area is saturated with options, and save the sugar-coated sweetness of Danish Pastry House, nothing really steps up the midday meal/wifi cafe game. Enter Tamper. Full disclosure: my first lunch here lacked excitement. While the Turkey Club featured house roasted turkey and quality bacon, it's too bready and needed a heftier swath of mayo. Plainly, it was boring - even on Iggy's Bread - and not worth the $9 price tag. Then came the next trip, and the Chicken Pesto sandwich won me over. Pulled bird (both white and dark meat) in a nutty, herbacious spread and a nice toast on Iggy's country white. Side it with a mustardy pickled carrot slaw. A fine, fine monument to that Earl of old; so much so, that I'd be willing to double-back on that turkey club to see if it's grown up just as strong. WiFi is free, interior is nouveau cabin boiler room serving as a meeting space for the Revolution of Autonomous MacBooks (and their Tufts student slaves) and they sell locally-made treats, like VT's own Red Kite salted caramels and some other stuff I can't recall because I'm temporarily obsessed with those caramels. That's not true. I'm actually permanently obsessed. Buy them all. Stop in for a spell, grab a loose leaf tea and you'll probably bump in to a Yelper or two (hey Christie and Carolyn)! read more

I guess I'll be the first one to go ahead and chime in on this brand new (and beautiful) addition to Medford's Hillside neighborhood. I am thrilled that a place like this has shown up! (particularly since I live in the 'hood) AND by 'like this' I mean: -Attractive storefront -Gorgeous design on the interior (clean lines, creative design elements, practical layout and seating) -High quality products/ingredients -Local vendors showcased (Great Barrington Roasters coffee for example) -GREAT coffee! -Attentive staff & visible ownership (who appear to care and be capable) -Excellent view (gorgeous Tufts building - former church across the way and if you like people watching, the bus shelter outside the window offers endless people watching fun!) -Groovy misc. bits (music provided via behind counter turntable) This place blows away the other coffee house on the block...and is giving them good reason to up their game! There is little if any evidence of the 'franchised' environment that occupied this space prior to Tamper's arrival. (Boloco) Only open for about 10 days I have visited a few times and enjoyed both the coffee and food. I found the hummus sandwich tasty and made of high quality, fresh tasting ingredients. Same was true for the B.L.T. Although both my dining partners have agreed that something crunchy other than a pickled garnish might be nice with the sandwich...maybe a gratuitous portion of some handmade potato chips? I also tried the egg sandwich that was served on what seemed like a homemade bread product. It was hot and delicious. My minor comment on this item was that it was served on a plate *just* big enough to hold the sandwich. Unfortunately any dripping cheese or items that fall out after the first bite is taken land off the plate. It's beautiful on presentation but falls down a little on execution. If this is the worst of what we see from Tamper we are fortunate! Add some extended hours, a beer/wine license and daily specials and this place may be just about perfect. Bring your wallet and a desire to support local, independent business - this place isn't cheap...but to be fair it isn't cheap to run an ethical, sustainable business with high quality ingredients and quality personnel. read more
