The shop may not look like much from the outside but, when it comes to custom tailoring, it's the magic that happens inside that counts. If you've grown out of the Indochino/Suit Supply types of made-to-measure services, and you live in the area, definitely see Peter at Tam Tailor for a big step up the tailoring ladder. I have worked with Peter at Tam Tailor on two bespoke suits; one all-purpose navy two-piece suit and a three-piece peak lapel tuxedo for my wedding. Both suits fit me better than any suits I have ever owned, including a jacket made for me by another well regarded Orange County bespoke & made-to-measure tailor as well as many off-the-rack and online made-to-measure services. Peter has a lot of fabric options available to browse through and is able to order fabrics that he doesn't have on hand. His fabric books seem to focus mostly on Loro Piana fabrics on the higher end (he also has many options for other fabric mills at lower price points) but, for my tuxedo, he was easily able to source a specific barathea fabric by Scabal that I requested for my tuxedo. Going through the process of taking measurements and multiple basted fittings was a pleasure and Peter was very open to hear my suggestions for how I prefer my fit and details. I was able to bring example photos to demonstrate some of these aspects as well and Peter incorporated them into the process. He has a good eye and is able to spot issues and adjustments quite well but he's open to hearing your input, too. Not only did Peter and his team create a custom pattern based on my measurements, I was able to specify details such as lapel width, height of the lapel gorge, shape of the lower jacket quarters, jacket button stance, etc. I am extremely satisfied with the end results. The quality of work and the overall experience represents a great value/price-point that I don't think can be beat in Southern California. Additionally, Tam Tailor has handled quite a few basic and more serious alterations for me. They do a fantastic job at a very reasonable price. read more

I've started to come here for all my tailoring and alteration needs. Peter (Tam's son) is probably the most honest and knowledgeable tailor I've met. I come here for everything after searching far and wide for a good tailor. It's just too difficult to find a place that does alterations with the sort of attention to detail that Tam Tailor has. As Peter said to me, "Our tailors can do anything. If they can make a jacket from scratch, they can do anything else." As Peter said, this shop is special because they can make suits completely from scratch. They are a true bespoke shop. All of their tailors work locally and the suits are made locally. They aren't shipped overseas or outsourced in any way. Brands like Suit Supply are great in terms of affordability, but their products are made in China. Many affordable menswear brands and Made to Measure shops do the same thing. Not Tam Tailor. They are a true local business, and by coming here, you are supporting a local entrepreneurial endeavor. The pricing is good. The quality of the work is excellent. They do everything from bespoke suits, bespoke shirts, sleeve alterations (like making actual function button holes on the sleeves of a jacket), to more basic things like hemming and tapering pant legs. I'll probably come here for anything and everything for the foreseeable future. I also plan on getting a bespoke suit made by Peter and his team pretty soon. Side Note: Peter has told me a lot of cool stories about the shop and Tam. Peter said that their shop used to make bespoke suits for Kobe Bryant. They would go to his house and do measurements there. Peter also told me a story about Tam and how he made a suit for an African president back in the day. Decades later, when Peter's son was graduating high school, Tam went into the archives and looked for the fabric he used for the African president, found it, and then made a suit for his grandson (Peter's son) as a graduation gift! read more

I came to Tam Tailor to make a made-to-measure suit for my wedding. After comparing their offering to the corporate models of Suitsupply and Indochino, I made the decision to move forward with Peter as I felt I was going to get much better quality, service, and value from Tam Tailor. After choosing from Peter's fabric choice, I ended up ordering a suit made from Loro Piana Super 150s wool. The fabric itself had a very subtle sheen and depth that looked very special with the light. Peter was very communicative through the entire process and made my suit to my request. Having received my custom tuxedo from my tailor in Hong Kong for my upcoming wedding, I was dismayed that the lapel was not equipped with a buttonhole as I had requested a month prior. Not wanting to send my tuxedo back overseas to have a proper buttonhole cut into the lapel, I searched for a tailor locally, but could not find anyone up to the task. I was becoming frantic, with my hopes of wearing a boutonnière evaporating as the wedding day was quickly approaching. One tailor in Huntington Beach however, pointed me in Tam Tailor's direction and, boy, am I glad he ever did! I dropped my dinner jacket off with Tam (pronounced like "Tom"), and asked him exactly where he was going to make the cut into the lapel and at what angle. Tam looked at me out of the corner of his eyes and quipped, "Trust me. I know what I'm doing." It was a gamble, but I walked away, entrusting Tam with my bespoke dinner suit jacket. By the time it took me to walk over to the bank across the street to pull some cash (Tam only accepts cash) and return, Tam was already finished with the work! I was impressed! A short conversation with Tam revealed that he was a custom tailor in Hong Kong during the '70s. I went to Tam to get 3 jackets worked on. Two adjustments and one arm needed to be repaired on one of my favorite Canali blazers. The work was solid and the pricing is fair. You can tell my the number of suits they have around but their work me precise and everything came back better. For the arm repair I couldn't tell where they repaired it and the stitching was flawless. This isn't a showroom and it looks like the floor of a manufacturing plant but the work is very solid. I've been getting jackets and suits for work for over 20 years and I've learned it's not the actual suit but your tailor that's gonna make you look right. Will be back for sure and I'll probably save for one of the custom suits they make after looking at the fabric quality and their work on my jackets. read more

I'm a short guy with a stalky, thick build. I don't fit into anything off the rack, it's pure sadness. But Tam has changed my life for the better, I look good as fuq now. Ya need sleeves altered, pants hemmed/tapered, anything reasonable, he can do it. He makes bespoke clothing, and that expertise extends to every one of his customers, not just people who purchase bespoke. For younger customers such as myself, he's pointed to affordable options that end up looking thrice as expensive after tailoring. He's taught me that you can make $100 suit look like 1000 with the right fit, style, and material. He gives great advice on how things should fit while staying careful not to force you into a certain style. His advice revolves around timeless styles, which is appreciated by a majority of people. I've been going to him for the past year now and I highly recommend him as one of the best tailors in OC. I've gotten suits, jackets, dress pants, chinos, jeans, dress shirts tailored by him without any issues. He gave me one look one time prior to altering my suit sleeves and said my left arm extended farther down compared to my right and explained why based on my natural posture and shoulder structure, something any skilled tailor can do, but the way he measures and analyzes things imo is very refined and precise compared to others. The alteration shop I usually go to was closed today so I decided to give this place a try due to the proximity. What a great find! For a simple hem it was $10 for men's pants. That wasn't bad considering the owner charges upwards of $1000 for a custom made suit. While speaking to the owner he shared with me some of the celebrities he has made suits for over the years. The list was quite impressive. You can tell he was been in the business for a long time just observing the way he starting pinning you without even having to ask what needed to be done. He didn't rush the whole process and really took his time to make sure everything was how you wanted. I visited Tam Tailor for a new suit and an adjustment for my previous one today and found out that there has been a big change. Muoi, the long time owner and master tailor, has retired since my last review due to an injury. I was relieved to hear that he is recovering and doing better. The business is now run by his son, Peter. This came as a surprise to me because Muoi never mentioned to him to me, but I have only asked him once briefly about this anyway. Any apprehension I had about the change was gone after chatting with Peter. Because he is younger and more fluent in English, it was easier to communicate with him. He told me that he had been working behind the scenes the entire time during Muoi's tenure, so I assume that the workflow would not change much if at all. I noticed that Peter's stylistic preferences are more modern and closer to my own, preferring slimmer and slightly shorter cut over Muoi's classic, slightly roomier style. Peter was also willing to honor the same price that Muoi had been charging for the past couple years. While I was waiting, I noticed another customer taking delivery of his suit made under Peter's tenure, and I could not find any complaints as to either the quality or stylistic choices. I will update the review once I my suit is finished, but the outlook is positive so far. read more

I had 2 old suits and decided to give Tam Tailor a try. Upon entering, there was a much older man who greeted me. For a brief second, I wondered if I wanted a younger tailor, but realized that Mr. Tam is one of those rare tailors who has almost 40 years of experience under his belt. I had some major alterations to my suit jacket and pants. He asked me a serious of questions of how he wanted my fit, and if you want a more modern fit, I would be sure to express it if that is what you want. I dropped off my 2 suits for a week, and after I picked it up and tried it on, a loved the tailored fit. I think this shop represents something more special for me though. Mr. Tam is old, but has so many great stories about his clients (such as Rod Stewart) and all his travels around the world. Mr. Tam shared some of his stories with me where he came to America with just $7, and after 40 years built a successful business through word of mouth (and now Yelp!). A part of me is really thankful for his hard work, because it is his generation which helped my generation be able to have opportunity in this country. Mr. Tam was very kind and efficient despite my odd work request. I have a Pitt mix who is a therapy dog. Because she's " full figured, i.e. Big chest, tiny waist " her required uniform vests never fit. I called them to ask if I could bring in her and her vest. After only a moment of hesitation, he said of course, you are a customer. She wasn't terribly cooperative, because she wanted to lie down for a tummy rub. He patiently fit her. Mr. Tam's work is magical. He knows tricks of the trade to make clothing that alter appearance. If you're fat, he can design a suit that makes you appear thinner. If you're short, he will design a suit that makes you look taller. If you're out of proportions, he will make you look more proportioned. Mr. Tam has decades of experience making suits for celebrities and heads of state. He has dozens of Nigerian clients. He flies to Nigeria and stays at the Presidential Palace while he measures high level government officials. Yet, this man is so down-to-earth, so easy to talk to. I found this place through a style forum recommendation and it's legit. I used to go to By Design, Arsens, or European Tailoring near SCP, but will be coming to Tams for the foreseeable future. This place does surgeon's cuff (working button holes on suit sleeves) in-house. The place is old school with tons of fabric and in-progress bespoke suits everywhere. The walls are also lined with tons of celebrity thank you pictures to Muoi. Apparently he's THE bespoke suit guy for athletes and celebs. No name dropping, but you'll recognize all the MLB players. I brought in 2 new RL Black Label suits, a RL Purple Label blazer, and a pair of Zanella slacks for alterations.
