The team of 6 or 7 worked so well together and were able to cut huge heavy branches off of our old very tall trees and lowered these giant pieces gently to the ground.. nothing in our garden or precious flowers was hurt . I have a bunch of old trees in my back yard in varying stages of decay. I called out 4 different contractors for advice on how to best handle my situation and Takoma Tree Experts came out with basically the same recommendations as the other contractors, but they gave the best value per work estimate out of the bunch. There was one bid that was lower, but Takoma Tree Experts offered more services for their bid, so I went with them. They came out early in the morning and went into total tree destruction mode. Within hours, my old, dying silver maple was gone. A few hours after that, my other trees' branches had been hacked off like a knight's limbs from a Monty Python movie. After about 8 hours, the crew had taken out one tree, ground one stump into dust, stripped away some English ivy and hacked many a branch from 4 trees. An impressive feat. The only reason I left off a star is because the crew didn't return the trash cans and recycling bins that they moved out of the way to create tree chopping space. That, and they left a good amount of trash from their lunch break, as well. But, tis a minor offense considering their efficient work. read more

After the storm blew through the other day, one of our trees (50' oak?) was leaning precariously! I frantically called around and these guys were able to send someone to evaluate the situation and provide an estimate the very same day. The estimate was a $100 below a competing bid and without requiring a crane. After I accepted, they came back and did the job all before dark, except for the clean up! They were also very nice and very considerate of the backyard. And the way the climbing guy swarmed up the tree was amazing! read more

A large oak tree was growing some gnarly branches over my roof, so I needed some professional pruning. After signing the contract, I had to reach out multiple times to schedule after their typical two week scheduling window had passed and I had heard nothing. Then, after finally scheduling a time, they had to cancel on me the day of their expected arrival. They did arrive the next business day, and none of these scheduling issues would matter if they had done an adequate job. They did not. It was overcast so their crew was in a rush to finish before it began to rain. This was reflected in the quality of their work. A large branch that was not properly secured fell onto my AC condenser. Thankfully there was no damage, but this should not have happened given the level of professionalism I had expected based on previous reviews. Then, when they were finishing up I went out to speak with the foreman to ask that they prune an additional branch that was still hanging over my house. At this point the climber was down from the tree and they were packing up. The foreman gave me a BS explanation for why that additional branch could not be pruned. In all honesty they had mentally checked out at that point and wanted to get out of there before it started rain, regardless of whether the job was actually done. That same day I contacted the company regarding the quality of work. I was told that the crew denied ever letting a branch fall on my AC and didn't know what I was referring to. Next time I'll take a picture for posterity. They also argued that the branch I requested to prune would make an inter-nodal cut and damage the tree. The foreman made no mention of this in his original explanation, and basically told me to wait until it grows more to cut it then. The contract stipulated a reasonable clearance over my roof, but instead these guys dropped branches on my AC and didn't finish the job. Now their HQ is defending them rather than putting the customer first. Avoid this company. read more

When you keep hearing the name of a business on various listserv's, you can be confident that the business treats the customer right....listserv people take no prisoners. I got an estimate for a 150 year old oak tree removal. Oak trees and earthquakes don't get along too good, that 2011 earthquake caused the tree to tilt. Takoma Trees had a fair estimate, I used another company in 2007, so I know that Takoma had a good price. TT had an opening on their schedule sooner than the two week appointment, and asked if I wanted it. They started around two in the afternoon, and finished, remarkably, in less than three hours. I wanted the wood, to include a twenty foot section. T-Trees uses a mulcher for the brush, they had a whole truckload when they left. There were five of them including the boss, they did it all, to include sweeping the stairs of the deck. I tipped them because I figure if you tip the waiter for walking thirty feet from the kitchen, you ought to be able to be able to tip somebody who goes up a hundred foot tree that is uhhhhhh, leaning. Can recommend this company without reservation. They cut the pieces to fireplace length, left me a twenty foot piece as I asked, they were neat and friendly and thoroughly efficient. We had a 50+ foot tall elm that was too close to the house, and which we believe was touching the foundation. After receiving an estimate that we thought was too high (over $600), we found Takoma Tree Experts on Yelp. I requested an estimate, and got back something that I thought was far more reasonable (less than half of what the other company quoted me). I signed off on their estimate, and the owner contacted me directly to discuss scheduling. He had to push back the date a few times due to the weather, but that was understandable. However, he also had to reschedule because of a miscommunication with his crew about having to work on the 5th of July, which I thought was a little unprofessional. I also thought it was a little strange that they didn't require any written permission from my neighbor, whose yard they had to enter to access the tree, but it all turned out to be fine. The crew was small, maybe 3-4 guys, and they worked quickly. They got the tree down and cut firewood lengths for me in about an hour. I would definitely contact them again if I needed another tree removed. My only real complaint is that their phone number is really just for an answering service, and you always have to wait for someone to call you back. That said, the owner is very responsive via email. I imagine that most people don't frequently have to have trees removed, so it's really difficult to determine what is an appropriate price and how the process should work, but I'm just happy my tree is gone with no damage to any property, and at a reasonable price. read more

We have used Takoma Tree Experts for the past five years to regularly prune our crêpe myrtle trees, as well as to remove two large trees on the property. They do a great job with everything, including keeping other plantings safe and carting away debris. Sometimes other arborists will "top" a crêpe myrtle, which looks awful. Takoma Tree Experts don't do this. They trim and shape the tree so that it grows properly. I highly recommend their work! read more

Takoma Tree Experts did an amazing job of removing a very large 150-year-old oak tree from our property. The tree had unfortunately succumbed to chestnut borers. Our house in Takoma Park is built into a hill, and the tree was behind the house, hovering over our bedroom. Access with any kind of big machinery was not possible due to the location. We got several quotes for removing the tree, most of which included bringing in a large crane, which would require removing our front fence and would potentially damage our parking area and walkway. Takoma Tree Experts assured me that they could remove the tree without using a crane, and they did a great job. Their highly skilled crew completed the task in two days, complete with good site cleanup. The entire process really couldn't have gone any better, and I highly recommend using Takoma Tree Experts for any type of tree removal, no matter how difficult. read more

I always use Bill Marvel and Takoma Tree experts for my tree pruning and tree maintenance issues. They are fair in their pricing, quick in their response time and do high quality work. Given that we have developed a multi-year relationship, we also now can plan different stages of work for the properties that I use them for in Maryland. That may mean that we do certain things in the Fall and then return next spring to take care of other tasks best left undone until later. They are very attentive to safety on site, with respect to parking equipment on the street and managing the site until the job is done. read more

We used Takoma to cut down a large sycamore tree that had a cracked trunk and was in danger of falling on our house. We called about a dozen tree service companies in the area, but couldn't get anyone to take the tree down right away. Takoma asked us to send them pictures, and once we did, they immediately sent someone over to look at it. Recognizing the danger, they rearranged their schedule, came over within the hour, and in about four hours they had the tree down. They ground up all the wood, moved flower pots out of the way so they wouldn't be crushed, cleaned up all the branches, and then moved all he flower pots back. Their work was excellent, and we highly recommend them. read more

I cannot tell you how happy I am with the job they did yesterday on taking down a recently diseased oak tree that was over 75ft tall and spread out over 3-4 backyards and above wires. I had gotten 3-4 estimates and the estimates ranged from $5,500 (Takoma Tree Experts) up to $12,000 (not including stump grinding). Bill Marvil came out and gave me the estimate and he really seemed like he knew what he was talking about. He also for no extra charge got a waiver from the city for the work. Other companies said they'd have to remove fences and gates and possibly contact PEPCO to remove wires for the day and have people in my neighborhood without power, but he said his team wouldn't need to do any of that and they sure backed it up. They took pictures of the alleys and driveways and yards before doing any work. Not only did they do a great job of removing the hazardous tree without any damage to yards, houses etc., but they did a fantastic job of cleaning up. They showed up with 8-9 workers, multiple trucks and a crane and managed to maneuver them down a tight alley with no incident. Also, and this resonated with me, it was recycling day and the recycling truck could not get past the wood chipper truck and down the alley to grab the containers. I then saw the workers flag down the truck and then each one brought a recycling bin down the alley over to the recycling truck to unload and then wheeled it back. They went the extra mile at every turn, including cleanup and were extremely professional, worked extremely hard all day from 8:00 AM - 6:20 PM. I can't recommend a tree company more than them, in all facets, they were great. read more

This past weekend we had a very unpleasant surprise; old oak tree that was hovering over our deck fell and bursted through our 2. floor. Thankfully we were not at home at that time, but still the shock was huge. We immediately called our insurance and they recommended Takoma Tree Experts. We thought that it may be a bit unlikely that they will rush to our house on a Mothers Day, but we were lucky. The owner returned out phone call within 5 minutes and in 1 hour he arrived to our house. He looked at the damage, and planned accordingly with a construction company that was covering the hole. The next morning a crew of 5 workers came to our house and within 3 hours they were able to lift the huge trunk with a crane off our house. They worked like clockwork.
