The first time I used them was when a tree of mine fell across my fence and also damaged my neighbor's shed. I needed them to provide separate estimates for my property and my neighbor's property (with them doing the work for both), provide a separate estimate for just my property (in case my neighbor chose to use another tree company), and all of the estimates needed to include all the breakdowns the insurance companies needed. Despite my asking that the arborist stop by again to look at the tree and discuss it, the company charged my credit card full price. When I called, the owner/manager was unwilling to take any accountability for the quality or in any way adjust the price for a very unhappy customer. I've worked in a number of businesses related to real estate and real estate management and I've never seen such carelessness. Here's the thing, you give me a call warning the week before to tell me you are still scheduled to come the following week. I get called up on a project I have the potential to make a fair amount but I obviously committed this 1 hour to a service, so I work around it. That ONE hour comes up and you never inform me you are here. The hour was 2-3. At 2:15 I saw an envelope with the estimate. I hired Adirondack Tree Experts to take down a large black locust tree in the backyard of a property in Upper NW, Washington, DC. A City arborist issued a permit for the tree removal - free of charge - because the tree was in decline. I received estimates from more than eight companies. Adirondack was the least expensive. And, I received positive recommendations for Adirondack from neighbors. They arrived on schedule, as promised. And, they were organized and worked diligently to remove the tree limbs one-by-one. They removed all of the limbs and debris. The property was completely clean when the job was finished. I didn't have the stump removed for this job. No one looks forward to the loss of favorite back yard trees, much less the expense that comes with removal. However, if you have to remove a tree, I would definitely call Adirondack Tree Services. After an arborist gave me the bad news that my two favorite tulip poplars threatened to leap onto the house if we had a good storm, it was time to say goodbye to them. These were not small trees. They were huge -- more than twice as tall as my house, and I really hated to see them go. However, given their proximity to my second floor bedrooms, I would definitely lose more sleep over the possibility of my family getting crushed in the middle of the night than I would over removing a couple of my favorite trees. I priced out the work with nine (yes, NINE) companies, considered consumer reviews, and learned a few things. First and foremost, the cheapest guy is apt to be the most dangerous, risk taker. In my case, the quotes ranged from about $2250 to well over $10,000. It turned out that the low bidder lacked workers comp insurance (that tells me he is a huge risk taker in a business as dangerous as tree removal), so I looked at the next group of bidders. Adirondack stood out. It has great reviews, is very responsive to questions, and gave us a very reasonable quote. Adirondack's crew was at my house within a week -- on time, with a large, experienced crew, plenty of modern equipment, and a good attitude. They were clearly focused on safety from the minute they got of of their trucks. Yet, they worked quickly. The two trees were cut and gone before 3PM.
