When you come to TAKODA, you need to know what you're coming for. Gourmet menu? Not really. Beer garden? They don't have a huge menu. Beautiful rooftop spot? Yes! This is a really gorgeous spot with a stunning view. It's designed to be open and outside. So come during some beautiful weather in the spring and fall! They don't have a huge menu but they have a great happy hour menu, including some frozen drinks. It's basically made for pre dinner drinks on a spectacular May afternoon. My friend and I visited this spot for a reading party event called Reading Rhythms and loved it! It's so vibeyyy. I have never been here before, but I loved the overall vibe and ambiance of the place. The staff was super kind and friendly, and they were very welcoming to us and everyone at the event. I like the decor and vibe of the bar, where I can see myself bringing friends or coworkers for happy hour after a long day. This might be small for others, but I LOVED that they had hooks under the bar and the tables for bags. It's uncommon to see that !! I ordered a Life is a Peach drink, and it was good. My friend ordered chicken and waffles, the truffle tater tot, and an Aperol spritz and said she enjoyed her meal. I will definitely be coming back for sure, especially during the summer! read more

for some reason Takoda is the one bar where it seems okay to consume their food - luckily I wasn't horribly wrong. the food was absolutely edible, like I'm not writing home to mom about it, but I'm not leaving with food poisoning which is the bar for bars (haha) - the shakshuka was served smoking hot. eggs cooked perfectly, toast was delicious whole wheat, and the stew itself was full of various vegetables. more stew like than soup like for sure - the breakfast burrito did the trick but it's a bit odd to put lettuce inside a breakfast burrito in my humble opinion. lettuce is a cold food, don't put it in there with hot eggs and such - the drinks were absolutely flowing. nothing better than a bottomless brunch with various bottomless options. they were out of the blanket tea cocktail somehow but the options of sangrias, froze, and orange crush was fire. it was interesting how the mimosas orange juice was real but the orange crush had fake orange juice. froze is always a win like come on. - our server was a sweetheart and kept the drinks constantly rolling in. he probably had 15,000 steps from just our massive table alone. We rented out the rooftop for an unlimited birthday brunch for $60/person and the deposit was $250. Price is decent, my only complaint--which is why I'm only giving them 4 stars is we have to constantly go up to the bar to ask for more champagne. We had a party of 25 and we were expecting more bottles, maybe 1 for every 4 people. The food was great, they had things on their brunch menu set out buffet style. If you're looking to host a birthday brunch Takoda would be a good option. Just ask for champagne early or you'll have to wait. read more

Used to hold happy hours for my job here, it is a nice facility with a small rooftop bar and lounge area. It is exceptionally loud and made it difficult to hear folks at the happy hours. Drinks are good and the bartender was friendly, never tried the food. read more

I had such high hopes for Takoda.. I've heard great things about the other locations and I really wanted to enjoy it. Sadly, we were super disappointed. First let me say, the customer service was great! The hostess was friendly and so were the bartenders (we were there right at opening for brunch on a Saturday). The issue was the food. The food was extremely bland and lackluster. The chicken in the chicken biscuit was so small and tiny, the pork in the hash was oddly watery. We barely ate it. Came here on Saturday around 3ish to meet up with a friend. They were just transitioning the kitchen from brunch to dinner, so I unfortunately showed up during the hour they were not serving food. While waiting, we ordered a few drinks until the kitchen was ready to accept food orders. To start, I ordered the TAKODA Boneless Wings ($13) and added Jalapeno Ranch dipping sauce (+$0.25). Not a bad appetizer to nibble one as far as bar food goes. For my entree, I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich ($15). This came with fries. Super filling meal and would recommend if you're not looking to get messy with a burger. Service is super friendly. They'll strike up a conversation with you if they're not busy trying to get people's orders. They're pretty patient also, providing you with recommendation based on your preference and helping you make a choice if asked. Other things to note: they add a 5% surcharge and an automatic 20% gratuity. read more

This is one of my favorite rooftops in the city! I love the casual feel, the string lights, and the fact that there is a roof and you still get to be outdoors even if it rains. it's really great because you can enjoy drinks while catching the sunset. How picturesque! This is also a good option for if you need to book a place to yourself for an event if they are still doing that. The cocktail names are cute/creative. I tried the "fully vaxxed," rum cocktail, the mule, and friends tried Moderna boys frosé. I also liked the sliders and parmesan tots. Drinks were delicious and service was fast. Never had brunch here but would consider trying. Two warnings: It can get a little crowded/too hot depending on the weather, but overall it's a good time. She never checked on us and when she finally did, while my friend was telling her the condiments she wanted, the waitress started walking away while my friend was still speaking to her. So my freeing didn't finish telling her everything she wanted. The waitress didn't have her full name on the receipt. Just "P". We had way better customer service from a gentleman that helped us more than she did! He checked up on us and made sure we didn't need anything & even refilled our water. We unfortunately didn't get his name but we did tell him he was wonderful & was a great waiter. Also I do not recall anywhere in the menu stating gratuity added on checks for parties of TWO. $53 per person for brunch at your restaurant is not worth the money. Plastic utensils, 90-minute time-limit, automatic gratuity (hence the less-than-crap service), and the restaurant that looks nothing like the website all ensure that I will never return to this place. Then "everyone at the table has to buy the bottomless mimosa brunch if one person wants it." So, people who don't drink can't hang out with a friend who does? The vibe at the rooftop of this place is very college-kids divey to me. I was truly let down. And the Bartender (short black-chick with long faux-locs), wish I'd gotten her name (worked on Sunday Feb 26 at 130pm) made the whole experience bad from start to finish. She was so bad that I said to my friend "gratuity must be included here." You can always tell when gratuity is included because the service will be lacking because they know they are going to get paid regardless. Fun fact: TIPS is an acronym meaning TO ENSURE PROPER SERVICE! But what kind of service can you really expect from a kid besides being remind d if the time-limit so often that we had to tell this girl to leave us alone. We had to ask for real silverware and the saucers she gave us were dirty (food and a piece of hair). She wiped the plate off and attempted to give it back to us to which we replied: Can we have clean plates? I really don't understand this child's logic; she wiped off the plate with a towel that was laying below the bar. How about this: WASH THE PLATE so there isn't any good or hair. OR, perhaps, look at the plates before giving them to people. That thing that really pissed me off is that AFTER we asked for another plate she replied "you want another plate?" As though wiping it off should have been sufficient. She walked away and came back with a "new plate." I hope it was actually a new clean plate because it was obviously too much work to go and get one that is free of hair from someone's body. Oh, the food....tiny portions on saucers. By tiny I mean child-like portion that Mom gives to the 5 year old. I can only surmise that this is done because you can order as much as you want. Seems to me it should be set-up buffet-style. Anyway, the food is not good. The itty-bitty waffle and the bacon are their saving grace. Though it isn't possible to mess-up bacon. I hate to write this review as I have enjoyed his establishment in the past. I went to celebrate my work friends B-day and the night started out fine. They had on heaters for cold DC in May lol. I was super happy about that. The only thing is there are 4 flights of stairs to get to the rooftop, so it's not really ADA friendly. In regards to service, the waitress was attentive in the beginning, since there wasn't a lot of people in the restaurant. After she brought the drinks and the food. All was well. The drinks could be stronger, but it was a Tuesday, so maybe the bartender was chilling. The BBQ Pulled Chicken sandwich and fries were tasty. Unfortunately, this is where it goes downhill. Our waitress left the restaurant out of nowhere and said nothing. The manager had to close out our tab because she was upset that he had her leave because of the low number of customers. After we close out the tabs and are talking. One of my friends saw a rodent scurry across the floor. This is what took the cake. I don't plan on returning to this location due to that. None that attended that infamous brunch will ever forget the events that transpired that day. 11:45am after a heavy pregame we arrived to Takoda in hordes. Good ole pre Covid days - 30 deep we walk to the door only for it to be locked? Baffled and disappointed we were, for the reservations were for 12pm and not a soul was in sight. Out came our savior in a Packers jersey. The only worker that was going to be there till 3:30pm before backup arrived. Opened were the doors to the establishment which was about to dissent into utter chaos. Like the firefly festival but actually fun. Mr Packers Jersey was the only work behind the rooftop bar. He single-handedly poured out mimosas by the 30-40 cups. The whole bar was filled with plastic cups filled with orange nectar. In my state of inebriation I didn't even realize the crowd had increased. More college students arriving to the homies birthday brunch. Before you knew it half of GMU and their moms was at Takoda. A solid 150-200 man event if not more. All sauced, squished into a rooftop filled with friends and good vibes. Open Land. Mr Packers Jersey was so caught up in serving the bottomless mimosas to the masses that the rest of the establishment turned into a lawless land. Bathrooms were being used for more than defecation. Littered with white powder, the bathroom sink itself was complbroken by the end of the event. Urination off the balcony was observed once or twice. The floor oozed orange juice. A slip and slide of sorts. By 3ish, everyone was wasted. Even Packers Jersey man for all we know. Not many remember what and how or why everything happened but those who do relish that day. It's a distant memory that often resurfaces when I see people have unexciting brunches. Oh what it could be given the right circumstances and people. Sadly and maybe for the better, Takoda learned it's lesson. You cannot leave a whole rooftop and bottomless mimosas to a 100+ group of college students with only 1 worker. The brunches after paled in comparison to that OG brunch. Takoda stopped letting people use the entire rooftop and instead split it into sections of sorts. Then Covid hit. Things slowed down. And there was an attempted revival movement but for good reason it failed, for somethings are not meant to be repeated. unfortunately I lost my phone but somewhere out there exists photographic and video evidence of the brunch version of Woodstock 99 that was. I ask thee to never even attempt to recreate the events of that day, but only cherish the anarchy that occurred for a small moment in the infinite timeline of existence. Takoda is a great place to pregame or stop by mid day in dc. Lyndsey and Daniel took care of me at the bar and they were amazing. Their bar manager Pete, the head bar tender, came by later on to make sure I was okay with the service which I really appreciated. The atmosphere is great. Yasim the manager also came by to check on me. Nice music and good seating. The beer choices and fired pickles were amazing. If you get the chance, come to Takoda and see Lyndsey for sure. read more

TAKODA is a restaurant located in Shaw. Came here on a Sunday morning for brunch. A look inside, you see a beautiful interior with modern decor. A mix of elevated yet chill atmosphere. The rooftop area is spacious and nice. You get a beautiful view of the city. For food, I had the Bottomless Brunch which is a 3 course meal and endless mimosas! The first plate consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, crispy potatoes, bowl of fruit and biscuits. For the second plate, I had the chicken biscuit. For the third plate, I went with the French toast and smoked salmon bagel. It was definitely a lot of food. But everything tasted delicious. The mimosas were amazingly delicious. The service was superb. Our server was friendly and attentive. Would definitely definitely recommend this place. read more

5 stars for ambiance on the terrace. So cute! The hanging plants are great and the open, breezy windows give almost a Miami feel. But 3 stars for bottomless brunch. When we got there for our reservation, they had already been open 30 minutes but you would think that they just did--no hostess until I got to the terrace, and no server for about 10 minutes. No menu until a server came either. Service was then good until they got busy, and then it wasn't--we had to repeatedly ask for more water, for plates to be cleared (tables are tiny!) and utensils as they had cleared our dirty ones. They food was meh. We did bottomless, and the first course was way too much food for two people, but the scrambled eggs were underdone and barely seasoned. The bacon was ok and so were the potatoes. The star was the fresh fruit and biscuits! For my second course I got the chicken and biscuit--tiny piece of chicken and an egg on half a biscuit with watery sausage gravy. The chicken was good but without good gravy the dish didn't come together and was dry. For the second course I tried some of both the challah French toast and chocolate chip waffle. The challah French toast was my favorite. But grapes with the blueberries and strawberries? Odd. I DO love that they give you a bottle of champagne and carafe of OJ for you to go to town on mimosas! They only allow 90 minutes per seating and do kick you out. And warning that they add 20% gratuity so don't over-tip unless you mean it! read more

Saw a cute video on Instagram and wanted to try this place out! We were so disappointed! We didn't get to sit on the rooftop because we didn't have a reservation. The hostess said we could sit at a table but had to be out at a certain time cause they had another party coming. We said okay! We ordered brunch - we it came out it looked appetizing, the egg was cooked perfect! I got the pork hash, I asked for a side of sour cream. It was super watery I dipped my fork in to try it and it tasted like sour milk. I told the waiter that it wasn't good he said okay I'll come back with sour cream. Then he said we have no sour cream - so not exactly sure what he gave me My friend got the avocado toast - it looked like white bread straight from the grocery store with store-bought guacamole on it, tomatoes, cucumbers and romaine lettuce. The ambiance is super nice and it's very "hipster". Maybe it's cool at night? Not too sure To be honest, I'd rather eat Waffle House then eat here, especially for the price! read more

Was excited to try this spot! Had it bookmarked but can't say I'll be pressed to return anytime soon. I came last night and had a reservation for two on the rooftop! Didn't see an elevator so had to trek up two flights of stairs in my heels. I was trying to look cute and enjoy myself so it was worth it. This was my first time being out at night in DC since pre-covid! I love a good rooftop and the vibes were nice and a good view is always nice, but I saw way more than I wanted to see....so let me explain. There are some apartments across the street with floor to ceiling windows and I guess some people just don't believe in closing their blinds or care, but we got quite the show. Anyway, my rating for this review is not based on the peep show. It was the service for me - not great at all. I was meeting a friend who arrived shortly before I did. I had a hard time parking, but I eventually found a spot not too far away! I met my friend and waited for awhile before I got to place an order. I got an old fashioned cocktail (I've had better), but wasn't too hungry. My friend got sliders and thought they were decent and the frose drinks were ok. No one really came back to check on us or ask if we wanted to order anything else. That was it for me. Not impressed! read more

Presently surprised of the quality and personal attention I received celebrating a dear friend birthday. Without reservations the waiter quickly accommodated my party of 5 in the rooftop garden. Along with the bottomless mimosa (your allowed to switch juice options: grapefruit, pineapple, orange) the egg ranchero w/ potatoes was a hit! While I did not dabble in my groups dishes (chocolate chip waffles & chicken, French toast) everyone agreed their meal was tasty and great. Great spot for happy hour with delicious cocktails and open seating! There's plenty of self-seating on the rooftop with lots of natural light pouring in from the floor to ceiling windows and skyline. I was one of the first people for happy hour and last to leave! Mule on Happy Hour (5/5) - The Moscow Mules are a steal for $6 during happy hour and can choose the base alcohol - vodka, gin, or bourbon. The bourbon was my favorite, the vodka base wasn't as good. Craft Cocktails (5/5) - "Spicy Seelbach", "Fall from Grace" cocktails, and the "Takoda Mule" are not on happy hour, but well worth paying full-price! The "Seelbach" has a spicy kick. "Fall from Grace" is like a sweet spiked apple cider. The "Takoda Mule" is refreshing from grapefruit, ginger, and lime that perfectly mask the vodka. Skillet Mac and cheese (5/5) - Divine and hits the spot! Rich, creamy, and oozing with cheese, nom nom nom! One of my favorite mac & cheese spots in DC. Veggie Burger (1/5) - Not a fan, doesn't taste fresh. Wouldn't be surprised if the patty was frozen. Although the bland patty was loaded with veggies, I couldn't taste any of them. I was searching for flavor and finally gave up after a few bites. I bummed that it came on a sad looking bun and not on a pretzel bun that I hoped for. The Tots with rosemary were the best part of the meal and came with the burger. They helped to compensate for the burger. Good spot for happy hour and weekdays, but don't recommend Fri & Sat nights with sticky floors. Spilled drinks and plastic straws and ice cubes littering the floor - dirty and disgusting! We even received a text confirmation the day of our reservation confirming we were good to go! Had my birthday here and recommend to anyone planning a group event in DC! Everyone had fun and the staff was super responsive and accommodating. Good food and drinks, especially the fried pickles and Smooth Sailing! The upstairs area has a balcony that's really fun on a sunny day, and there's enough room to do some dancing. My one minor complaint was that the music was too loud, but that's bars everywhere. Will definitely be back! read more

Stopped in for a quick happy hour on a Wednesday night before heading to a birthday dinner. It was nice to find a spot that still offered happy hour while a lot of places no longer in attempts to recoup Covid losses. They have happy hour specials on Wed-Fri from 4-7pm with $4 -$8 drink specials. I must say the rooftop beer garden is absolutely fabulous! The bartender told us that since it's an open but enclosed rooftop that they will remain open with Covid restrictions. This place was perfect for a casual date night with some friends. I loved the vibe and decor and definitely loved the seating on the balcony. It's a busy part of town so parking can be nearly impossible and it's not unusual for your time there to be filled with lots of sirens and ambulances passing by or even loud people on motorcycles. We all decided to go the appetizer route and get one of everything to share. The boneless chicken wings have an amazingly flavorful and crunchy out exterior which is fantastic! The inside is pretty darn juicy, too! But it wasn't unusual to find a good amount of chewy fat or something going on inside. The truffle fries were super delicious! The old bay tots weren't overwhelmed by the seasoning, but they were nice and crispy and perfect for dipping in the yummy garlic aïoli. Of the sliders and sandwiches, I personally thought that the barbecue pork was way better than any of the other options. The burger looked pretty boring and I was disappointed in the lack of flavor and the short rib sandwich. read more

This low rating is due to seeing multiple mice and poor value. It was very unappetizing to see mice scurry across the restaurant floor. I understand the door of the restaurant is street level and remains open; however the restaurant/bar is upstairs. Staff saw the mice but didn't do anything - maybe they can't as the problem is already too pervasive? Staff was friendly, but I couldn't help but notice how understaffed it was during a happy hour rush of 40 people - not their fault. Definitely leadership's responsibility. The food wasn't as written on the menu: for example, the nashville hot chicken was plain breaded chicken. The old bay tots were plain tots. At the price markup, I expected more but this was such a disappointment. I recommend not going here for your next U St area outing. read more
