Set A : Sesame Chicken and Tempura
Andrew D.

Hearty Japanese lunch spot in the heart of Irvine! Located in Arbor Village Center plaza, this restaurant serves a variety of Japanese cuisine including sushi rolls, bento boxes, and more. Upon entry, you can expect to be seated and served relatively quickly. The restaurant boasts a large seating area, able to accommodate groups of varying sizes. The ambiance is that of family style restaurant; however, I can see this place being good for a casual lunch amongst friends and coworkers alike. For the food, I chose to go with the popular lunch combo option including Sesame Chicken and Tempura. As shown in the picture, the combo comes with a massive portion size, definitely filling for one person and potentially two. The sesame chicken was quite savory and juicy, exceeding my expectations. The tempura felt standard. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal with the key contributor being the immense value that you get during lunch. Overall, I would highly recommend this establishment to those looking to get casual Japanese food during lunch in the heart of Irvine!

Sushi!

The staff here are the sweetest, most caring Japanese ladies and they will not rush you and they will make you feel so taken care of. Immediate comfort. The space is a little dated but in the best way, feels like a rustic little spot in Japan and honestly that's the whole charm. Went for lunch and did the build your own teishoku. Got tempura and sushi, my coworker went sesame chicken, sushi, and veggie tempura. The portion size is MASSIVE and suddenly very clear why it's $20-25. I had leftovers and I was not expecting that. The food genuinely reminded me of home cooking. Warm, comforting, made with care. Vast menu so there's truly something for everyone. One tiny thing: canned green beans with mayo came with the meal. Very Japanese, very classic, very much not for me personally. But that's between me and the green beans. A hidden gem. Go for lunch, clear your afternoon, and let the auntie energy wash over you.

I picked up my niece from SNA. She was visiting me from her home in San Francisco. Would you believe that her only request from me during her stay is to go directly to Taiko for lunch from SNA? That is how wonderful the food and service here is. Even people from out of town crave their food. By the way, my niece is a foodie and has tasted the best from several of her trips to Japan. This is our favorite sushi restaurant of all time in the U.S. The prices are reasonable and the quality of food is always excellent. They are also very generous with their serving sizes.

Happy hours are an important part in Orange County's restaurant culture. We want a place that's welcoming and servers are kind. Specifically, me and my wife were craving Japanese food that reminded us of our time in Osaka or Tokyo. That's why we come to Taiko for Happy hour! Food was fantastic as always, we always get the tempura and sesame chicken. Lots of food with this one, and the chicken is fresh. Miso soup is amazing with it. We also like to get tuna rolls and 2 bottles of Sapporo. The dodger game was on so it was a fun environment. Servers are very attentive and good at what they do. They also have a rewards system so look at that for future discounts. We'll be returning often to Taiko, it's really a comforting atmosphere to enjoy Japanese cuisine!

Udon & Una Don Lunch Special

Taiko is a cute hole in the wall located in Irvine off of Jeffrey. I love this spot because of their diverse Japanese food selection. The menu consists of items like sushi, sashimi, udon, tempura, and other Japanese classics like teriyaki or mackerel. The food here is very afforable even during this time of increasing food cost. A prime example of this is the Lunch Specials and Teishoku meal sets. The Udon & Una Don lunch special only costs $21.90, but comes with a massive piece of eel. All the employees are so friendly here. There's a lady who works here that speaks English, Japanese, and Korean fluently, which makes it much more welcoming for a wider variety of guests.

Was satisfied with our dinner meal and orders. Thought everything was fairly priced for the portion size. Quality of meat for the sesame chicken - (not really juicy) and sukiyaki beef - was okay (beef slices over cooked) but the flavor for the sukiyaki was tastyyyyy i really liked the sweet/umami broth. Beef Kushiyaki - was good but would have been even better if the meat was marinated longer- good glaze outside but didn't really taste it throughout the piece. For the price, i'd get the kushiyaki again i think it was cooked well and it comes with a yummy onion and mushroom on the skewer. I would come back I like how cozy and comforting it feels. Nothing super special though, next time will try sushi/sashimi and bento with tempura.

Lots of options- sushi, udon, plates. I went with Teriyaki chicken- it was flavorful and tender. Rainbow roll was good. Portion sizes are on the bigger side. Service was good. Place was big inside and lots of tables.

Used to come as a kid and it's been quite some time! Got a togo order and portion was reasonable. Also 10/10 for putting the teriyaki on the side for the bento. Would come back

Nigiri
Liz B.

A delicious and authentic Japanese spot with great combos! The tempura and nigiri combo was more than enough food, and I left feeling full sand satisfied. It came with a generous amount of salad, shrimp and veggie tempura, and five nigiris. The sushi was fresh and delicious, and the tempura was light and crispy. I also a bite of sesame chicken from another person's combo, and it was tasty and came with a lot! The interior is very cozy and feels like an authentic Japanese restaurant, and the service was great. I will definitely add this spot to my rotation!

Taiko is one of the main Irvine Japanese gems that brings back so many memories. Every time I come here, I just have memories of large beautifully plated meals and friendly waiters/waitresses. I'm so glad they made it through COVID and still have pretty decent sized portions. My husband and I love coming here for an easy and delicious date night. I usually order the salmon teriyaki and chicken and they're both so so yummy. The salmon is always cooked so perfectly. He likes to order the California roll and chicken teriyaki and those are both good too. Overall we enjoy the experience and food of Taiko!

Love these portions! Another day, another salmon collar! This one was huge, nice and fatty, and perfectly charred. The vibes are great here, feels like traditional Japanese restaurant. The service was excellent, the food came out super quick, what a great time!

Haven't been here in many, many years and recently a co worker wanted to come here for lunch. We were greeted right away, and our attention immediately went to their lunch specials. I got the sesame chicken with tempura and wow. Their portions are HUGE. The other food items we got: chicken rice bowl with udon lunch special, sushi with tempura lunch special, and an eel roll to share. The portions were so big that we all took leftovers to go. Food was delicious - will def be coming back to try more items! At around $20 for their lunch specials, you're definitely getting the most bang for your buck!

Jenning L.

Taiko is a very cute Japanese restaurant with such friendly staff. It's also conveniently located near other shops for dessert/skincare/makeup shops if you'd like to walk before or after your meal. Portion sizes for some dishes are pretty generous! The salmon nigiri that I ordered was fatttt. The charashi was also very worth the price. We spent about $60 (tad pricy) per person and were both full/had some leftovers. Of everything we ordered the only one I wouldn't order again is the takoyaki just because I'd like more sauce.

We had our little one in tow with us and they were so accommodating to him! As soon as we were ready, our server took our order. We got: Chowder "frots" (fries and tots mixed in with some New England clam chowder, bacon, onions, cheese, and other goodies) 10/10, would definitely order again. My wife got the lobster roll with a side of clam chowder. Loaded with lobster, but you do pay the price. Labeled as market price, this was almost $40. Delicious, but not worth it in our opinion. 6.5/10. Pan roast (house specialty which came with shredded crab, shrimp, clams, and muscles). This, topped with rice, was heavenly. Better than any pan roast I've had. Came out ripping hot as it should. My wife was envious of my dish. 10/10 From the kids menu we also ordered the chicken Alfredo. My kid loved it, but my wife and I both had a bite and wow, we would've ordered that for ourselves it was so good. 10/10. We can't wait to come back just for the food. On top of that, however, service was above and beyond. The servers and everyone in the restaurant were so accommodating to us and our child and made us feel so, so welcome. We would come back even if the food was bad, solely for the service we received. Vibes we great, decoration on the walls look like they hired an artist to paint it. I stopped in at a somewhat odd hour, but my first impression of the service wasn't great. When I walked in, there wasn't a single employee around to greet me for a good minute or so. Eventually, someone came out from the back and told me I could sit wherever I liked. Since I was dining solo, I grabbed a seat at the counter. Unfortunately, the lack of professionalism continued throughout my visit. I'm not sure if there's a designated employee break area, but it was strange to see one of the servers eating a bowl of noodles in the same area where drinks were being prepared, and later squatting on the floor to take a break. At one point, another male server appeared, and their flirtatious and somewhat inappropriate interactions were awkward to witness as a customer. Overall, the service and professionalism could definitely use some improvement. As for the food, I came specifically for the $2 oyster happy hour. The oysters were huge and tasted fine. I'm generally not a fan of oversized oysters, but these were surprisingly meaty and smooth, so I enjoyed them. I also ordered the pan roast advertised on the happy hour menu, which was unfortunately a letdown. Rather than the rich, seafood-filled pan roast I was expecting, it was essentially a bowl of tomato bisque with barely anything in it, served alongside a bowl of rice. It really didn't resemble what I would consider a proper pan roast, and I wouldn't advertise it as such. Overall, while the oysters were decent and the indoor and outdoor seating options are a plus, the disappointing pan roast and lack of professionalism from the staff left a lot to be desired. There's definitely room for improvement, especially when it comes to service and the quality of the food being advertised.

The salmon ceviche was really good but a bit heavy on the sauce for me. The clam chowder had whole clams in the shell throughout. That was fun to pick them out! For entrees we got the lean and mean plate with sea bass. It comes with salad and rice, we substituted the rice for black beans.
