Sumo Sushi & Grill was located conveniently close to our hotel, and with a sushi craving hitting me hard, I talked everyone into coming here for a late lunch. While they do have a la carte options, I felt like the all you can eat was a better deal, especially if you plan on ordering more than a couple items. Their fish selection is pretty limited, but I was excited that they had a decent number of tuna items. I went a little hard on that and ordered a bunch of tuna cut rolls and nigiri. They do have a lot of rules at this place, though we found the ordering process pretty straight forward, and the waiter was pretty helpful in explaining everything. There are only a couple items on the menu that cost extra, but be careful. Overall, I thought the sushi quality was pretty disappointing. The tuna nigiri was especially bad, with the tuna rolls being a little more appetizing. If looking for a sushi restaurant in Amsterdam, you can probably do better than this, at least I hope. If you don't mind low quality fish, this place will suffice, however, if you are used to good sushi, you'll likely be disappointed. Food aside, service and ambiance were both nice. No complaints in that department.

The decor looks awesome, the staff is young and hectic and thus in turn, oblivious at times. They work with a checklist "all you can eat" system but restrictions apply, naturally. My body was craving something with actual nutritional value, and the Asian food scene was so strong here that we thought finding a sushi place seemed like a good idea. Indeed it was. Geisha is a really nice restaurant - dark and swanky, it was definitely a great place to have a meal. I also really dug the bar, which was super swanky and glass. This restaurant has a fairly limited sushi menu, but what we had was very good and fresh. But the dim sum menu was really the star of the show. We got iberico pork suimai which was REALLY good. And then the shrimp dumplings were also really delicious. The beef dumplings were also good but were pretty greasy and our least favorite. In addition I ordered the miso soup, which was possibly the best miso I have ever had. It was clearly made to order and came with a pool of lovely mushrooms - two kinds. It was absolutely delicious. Our waitress, who was the manager or owner was OK. She didn't write anything down and then had to come back to our table to verify our order. I also was somewhat disappointed that they charge you for tap water here (we were charged per little bottle they brought to the table). But other than that, it was truly a very nice meal.

The place has a lot of potential, and some good music or energy from the staff would go along way. The sushi tasted just fine, but I just wasn't feeling it. The rolls in particular were good, well better than the straight sushi. Also it is a little strange to have tourists constantly walking past the window looking at you while you eat. I think it is a little overpriced for the experience as some others have said which will be hard to drop with such a location.

Sorry - we'd had excellent sushi in Paris (and elsewhere) but we get it, you're a robata bar. Still fun, and the light lunch we needed before rijstaffel for dinner. We enjoyed our just around par sushi - and the fact the sushi chef gave us an odd wasabi sauce (delicious!) and said "Fresh!" just after he cut open a packet and poured it on a plate ;D The sushi is nothing to write home about. Still a fun place, and a safe bet for a late lunch, if not mind-blowing :)

Serving us most the night was the main chef himself who observed us smile with ease at every first bite we took of each dish served. The food was quite good. Small portioned with intentions to share with others; three to four dishes are plenty for a party of two. We were starving so we ordered quite a bit. Sashimi was okay, nothing worth raving about. However, they did have two types of soy sauce for sashimi. They had the traditional Kikkoman soy sauce which is often used for sushi and sashimi and then they had the Shibanuma soy, which was ever so slightly thicker and sweeter IMO. The Shibanuma is meant intentionally to be tasted with sushi and sashimi, not to be cooked with as the server mentioned. It was tasty, most defintely. Honorable mentions were the mongolian beef stew, which came piping hot and delicious. Picture does not do the dish justice. Meat was fall apart tender, full of spice and flavor. Probably best paired with a neutral side, like white rice but we got stir fried udon noodles instead. Udon noodles were delicious as well. Simple yet well made. (Salmon Nigiri: C) - Fascinating concept with a South Asian influenced flavor profile that seemingly works. I'm not sure what the foam is supposed to be for since its completely disjoint from the salmon, but this dish wouldve worked if it was balanced with saline. (XO Siu Mai: B) - Surprisingly well flavored with a tender meat mixture, topped with some subtle xo to enhance with a noticeable but not overpowering spiciness. We were anticipating thoughtfully prepared Asian fusion cuisine in an elegant setting. We ordered the tasting menu. None of the dishes were inspired. The menu started with an oyster in the half shell with a nice Asian version of a mignonette. The mignonette was excellent but the oyster itself was a little fishy. The sashimi that followed was good but identical to sashimi anyone can get in any decent sushi restaurant. The black cod followed. Like the sashimi, it was good but nothing special. The last main was seared wagyu. It was nicely cooked but the sauce was a completely uninspired sweet sauce that actually detracted from the taste of the meat. The tulip pot dessert was hands down the high point. It was the one part of the menu that felt in any way inspired. The service was friendly but very slow and very disjointed. The music was too loud to allow a meaningful conversation. The dining room is thoughtfully designed and actually quite cool. So, if you're looking for a club that serves mediocre uninspired Asian fusion cuisine, by all means go for it.
