Who would have thought that we would be having one of the best Japanese dining experiences in Amsterdam? If you happen to be here, it is a must try!

"It's so good I want to cry." Yes, that came out during dinner. In all honestly, this has been the best sushi I've had so far in Amsterdam. Each new piece was like an adventure in flavor. Even things which I don't normally like, omelette for example, were still quite good. Among the highlights were that blissfully beaming and buttery fatty tuna. Oh what I have been we were in to taste that. also on the strangely different side was the role made from pickled pumpkin. Very different and tasteful, of course like everything else there. we also guts one of the 10 piece sushi sets, which was a good mix of things on the menu. Although I always feel ripped off on some level when I get shrimp in that. Now that I know what I like best, I will be more apt to buy them piece by piece next time. Oh and how are that will be a next time! As for the ambience and the staff. The one warning I can give is to make a reservation and/or get there early. We arrived without a reservation yet's early in the evening so we could get a table at the bar still. The service was good up until the point when the restaurant got busy. After that we sort of were forgot about. what drew us in but we were unfortunate to mess was the load tables and Japanese style eating area towards the back. It looks very gezlling, so next time we will book that for sure. I haven't yet found a better sushi restaurants in Amsterdam. So if that's what you're after, this is the place. So tasty you could cry.

So glad we came back and had a proper meal this time including sushi! This is now hands down the best place in the center for sushi. (Okura hotel is amazing, but not a place I would trek to regularly.) The cuts were just right with a long enough tail, the sushi rice was a perfect temperature and stickiness, the fish was really good quality. I generally avoid any maguro tuna these days because of the low quality and lack of flavor at most places (and of course the general tuna-overfishing), but I have to say it was really good here. The sweet shrimp sushi had an amazing flavor. Even the really simple side salad had a unbelievably subtle but oh-so-tasty dressing that I just wanted to lick from the bowl. The tamago egg was sweet and so light -- delightful. They didn't seem to have a really wide variety of fish, but if you have to minimize to keep quality high, then I don't mind! The only gripe is the general Amsterdam one regarding service, which is essentially discountable because who really has great service here , hence the 5 stars. Make sure to call in advance for a reservation because they are busy for good reason. Will definitely be back soon! I can't go back to eating that crappy takeout stuff now.

yummy sushi rolls oh yeah baby!
    Awesome A.

Akitsu may be the best sushi in Amsterdam. We tried sashimi, sushi rolls and small dishes including the agedashi tofu and gyoza. All were delicious! The hamachi melted in my mouth, as it should. If you go to Akitsu, please call me. I will join you! Thanks to Flip for the recommendation ...it only took me 8 months to go. Duh. The place looks typically Japanese: simple and straightforward. The sushi though, is unbelievable. We had dinner here with a group of spoiled sushi lovers who travel a lot and some of them said this was the best sushi they ever had. I couldn't agree more. Next to sushi they also serve plates, which are very good as well. There's plenty of choice if you are a Sake lover. Service was good. The owner and chef Hiroshi Koruchi has run this place for 20 years and I heard the quality has been perfect ever since. Not cheap, but well worth it, especially compared to other places in Amsterdam who charge the same or more but can't touch the quality of Akitsu!

Food was delicious but a bit pricey since portions aren't that big. They ran out of some of the food so at least you know it's fresh! The otoro (fatty tuna) just melts in your mouth. We wanted another order but they ran out. The sashimi plate was pretty fresh. We made a reservation and was able to have the stroller right by our table. I saw them turn a few people away since they didn't have reservations. Overall, great place to get Japanese food!

They forgot about our order and it took over 1.5 hours for food to come. Would not recommend for those looking for a pleasant evening.

Sumo Sushi & Grill was located conveniently close to our hotel, and with a sushi craving hitting me hard, I talked everyone into coming here for a late lunch. While they do have a la carte options, I felt like the all you can eat was a better deal, especially if you plan on ordering more than a couple items. Their fish selection is pretty limited, but I was excited that they had a decent number of tuna items. I went a little hard on that and ordered a bunch of tuna cut rolls and nigiri. They do have a lot of rules at this place, though we found the ordering process pretty straight forward, and the waiter was pretty helpful in explaining everything. There are only a couple items on the menu that cost extra, but be careful. Overall, I thought the sushi quality was pretty disappointing. The tuna nigiri was especially bad, with the tuna rolls being a little more appetizing. If looking for a sushi restaurant in Amsterdam, you can probably do better than this, at least I hope. If you don't mind low quality fish, this place will suffice, however, if you are used to good sushi, you'll likely be disappointed. Food aside, service and ambiance were both nice. No complaints in that department.

But the limitations and restrictions on the "all you can eat" aspect of it really bring it down. You can only order 5 times, like 5 pieces of sushi or 5 things. They have options, but not THAT many. Also, you're time restricted etc. It just makes everything less fun and kind of a pain. The portions are also small, so I mean, it really wasn't all I could eat.

Normally I don't expect too much from all-you-can-eat sushi place, but the experience here is an exception. Every item was freshly prepared per order. You are not picking out half cold food from a buffet. You are picking 4 items at a time. The chef makes them with warm rice and crispy seaweed. Once you finish a round, you can pick 4 more, and so forth. I liked every item I tasted: Eel sushi Salmon (both sushi and sashimi) Tuna sashimi Grilled sea bass Wonton soup with shrimp BBQ spare ribs BBQ Peking duck The staff are very nice and attentive. We couldn't possibly ask for more. Highly recommended.
