Heard this was a good ramen spot in the area, when we got there there was a line of a couple people but we were able to get seated pretty quick since our group was small. The place was nice and clean. I thought the food was just alright, the noodles springy. I thought the spicy ramen broth wasn't very spicy and not too flavorful. Just got to Amsterdam from LA and we were walking the City Center area looking for a place to have din. It's a Monday night and all the restaraunts are empty, except this one. It was packed and even an old investigator would know that's a clue for a good restaurant. Had the Chicken Teriyaki with Chicken Dumplings and it was outstanding! See photo. An authentic ramen shop, with good variety and delicious food. I had been longing for spicy food, and the butatama miso ramen really fit the bill perfectly. It was flavorful, the portion size was good, and it arrived quickly. It was a wonderful meal. Umaimon is one of several Takumi family restaurants -- I have to imagine the others would be good as well. Decent ramen place in Amesterdam, super popular even on a weekday evening, there was a line out the door, but a host came by to take down our name and let us know the wait is likely only 10 minutes. The inside is fairly large and service is fast, so you probably don't have to wait too long even with a line. They have a pretty large menu -- over a dozen ramen options, plus curry/rice bowls, and several appetizer options. I ended up getting the black garlic buta ramen and karaage. Both tasted fine, though the ramen chicken broth is a bit different the typical ramen broth, the flavors are not as heavy/thick/fatty, so keep that in mind. All in all, it was an enjoyable meal, the ramen tasted good and mine came with a soft-boiled egg which was done nicely, and the black garlic gave it a more hearty flavor than the miso/shoyu base which seemed quite light (based on what I saw at other tables). We had hoped to get dessert but they ran out so we couldn't try it. All in all, decent ramen place but doesn't compare to other ramen places I've been too. Lots of menu options so a great choice for Japanese food even if you don't want noodles. read more

I really liked the Yuzu Lemonade--not something I see in other ramen shops and asian restaurants. That being said, I've tried many ramen places in the United States and Japan, and here--it's just alright. The Black Garlic Buta Miso Ramen tastes pretty good, but it doesn't really have any significance to make this a memorable experience. The atmosphere is very well-designed tho, I'll give it that. I found this place because of Yelp! and again was satisficed. The selection is great and we immediately got a table. I got the Black Garlic Buta Ramen and my wife got the Butatama Miso Ramen. We both really, really liked our dishes and had left overs. However, the star were the Kara age, or boneless fried chicken wings. They were lightly battered and fried to a golden crisp. We ordered three ramens and when they were served, I noticed my noodle portion is much less and broth is relatively shallow (please refer to the photo) comparing with the other two bowls. So I doubled checked with the waiter whether it seemed my portion was less by mistake. They brought the manager who told me that their portion was standardized as they weighed each noodle before they serve. As she said that, I chose not to ask further but requested if possible to give me a little more broth as I typically prefer a more soup for noodle. She immediately refused because the volume of soup was standardized. So I sat down to try how wonderful this standardized ramen could be. Well it was very mediocre. I can't taste typical Japanese ramen broth that supposed to be made out of either pork or chicken, but just soy source and condiments. I have to conclude this ramen restaurant was overrated or customers are way too generous on the rating. The owner probably either never been to Japan or tweaked the Japanese ramen standards to a low cost idiot-proof cooking method but lost the essence that ramen should be customized - from portion of ramen to softness of noodles, from volume of broth to even which vegetables to include or remove. So to my understanding so far, ramen is one of few should never be allowed as one-size-fits-all type of food that we as customers only can take what a restaurant thinks is right for us. Maybe the owner should at least watch the movie "Ramen Girl" to learn the spirit of ramen cooking? And by the way, Umaimon sticked a printed review on the wall that showing a bowl of ramen with two halves of egg. But in reality, we ordered three different types of ramen but each only came with just half egg. Can Umaimon tell the customers which ramen they sell with one whole egg? read more

I didn't think I would get Ramen in Amsterdam...but sometimes you just have cravings for Asian food. I'm glad my husband and I ended up here. It was quite easy to make a reservation, and also seemed quite easy to walk-in should you just show up. They had the noodles down (curly and thick, my preference), the broth, even the typical ramen ingredients like the bamboo shoots and egg. it was a rainy Friday and I wanted something hot and slurp-able. A colleague had been to this place and recommended it, so 3 of us decided to check it out and oh gosh - I so wish we'd made a reservation cause it was massively busy and there was limited place to wait inside, and so every time the door opened, you'd get the cold shivery wind and the occasional stray raindrop, but finally our misery was over (I reckon we waited at least 45 mins to get a table!) and we were lead to our table. I decided to get the Spicy Butatama Miso Ramen soup and for me the standouts of this dish were the beautifully cooked, perfectly runny egg and the noodles! The broth and the pork - eh - I have had better! Apart from the soup, I also got some Mint Tea with honey, which was very gentle. The honey wasn't as sweet so that was actually really good as the mint was highlighted. I'm not sure I thought this place was as good as my colleague. I pride myself on being a ramen connoisseur, having traveled throughout Japan and the States in search of delicious, steaming bowls of beautiful, rich broths and great-textured noodles. This place, which specializes in chicken broth ramens, delivers on both wonderfully, and for the noukou mala ramen, I ordered, the chicken "katsu" I had in my ramen was a great complement as well: tender, with crispy skin that remained crispy in the broth, paired alongside generous amounts of cabbage, coriander, ginger, and scallion -- all things that pair well with chicken. My only complaint is the wakame seaweed salad was pretty salty, so much so that I ate all the decorative mesclun and arugula and still couldn't finish the seaweed. Otherwise, the vibe of the place is hip and service is good, food is pretty top notch. Broth is flavorful and noodles are the perfect texture. First time getting chicken ramen but if definitely get it again. Kirin draft comes in two sizes but you want the large. Not a great sake selection (only one iirc, served hot...so hot). I got the fried chicken curry the second day but should have opted for the mala chicken ramen. Staff is polite and attentive. We played a drinking game called Titanic here and the staff seemed unaware of it. I recommend you try it! It'll have you on the edge of your seat. Order a Kirin draft, a water cup, a hot sake and a single sake shot glass. Pour Kirin into the water cup and then float the shot glass in the beer. Now take turns pouring sake into the shot glass. I have to say that this restaurant is on par with the best ramen restaurant I've visited in Japan and California. It's advertised that the owner actually imports ramen noodles straight from Sapporo, Japan. This restaurant specializes in chicken broth. The noodles are of perfect texture and consistency. The broth is rich but not greasy or overly salty. The best part is the pan fried chicken thigh - the skin was golden and crispy while the meat was so tender and juicy! There was also generous portion of vegetable in ramen. You also get a side salad with the ramen! My husband had the fried pork cutlet curry rice two times in a row, that's how much he loves this dish! His curry rice comes with miso soup and side salad.
