Very eclectic place. Great food, not the greatest service or comfortable dining experience. 4/5 for the food; 3/5 overall. We arrived around 6:30pm for dinner. Staff don't bother to find tables for you; they let customers figure things out among themselves. Alright. We eventually grabbed a table after 5-10 minutes, then had our order taken 10 minutes later. The food took a long time to come out: about 40 minutes (other than 1 appy that came out after 20). Good thing it was tasty. We got: -plantain fries (€6) -- tasty, especially with the sweet dipping sauce, but you get about 8 fries, so not great value. -okonomiyaki (€12.90) -- this was wonderful. So many lovely textures, flavours, and seasoned beautifully. This was the highlight of the meal for me. -vegan plate (€18.90) -- really nicely designed plate, with a base of brown rice, with a sort of Japanese slaw, vegan chicken katsu, tempura (apparently, though I didn't notice it), and stir fried veggies. Super tasty stuff. Not the biggest portion, but not bad either. My friends each got the crispy roti wrap (€14.90), which they loved, and the taste I had was great. So so so delicious! what did I get My cousin and I shared the roti wrap and vegan plate. The roti wrap was amazing! I know it is in the title, but I was surprised that it was a real roti that was used to make this wrap (silly me). I love the seasoning and the veggies that were stuffed inside. The vegan plate was also excellent. I especially love the starry veggies. Environment Love the environment and vibe that this place gives. Wooooow!! What a great vegan restaurant. Japanese x Jamaican fusion which works really well together. From the decor to the music to the food itself, both cultures come together for a mega bomb of flavor and killer vibes. Do yourself a favor and order their home made ramen because what a hearty broth it is along with some spice! Packed full of vegetables and faux chicken, it's more than filling. Noodles were on 10! Additionally their dragon roll is huge! These weren't your average size rolls but required you to break them up into 2 bites haha. This was our first meal while vacationing in Amsterdam. We were so excited to find a vegan restaurant with great reviews. It didn't disappoint. The day we visited was during a heat wave, and this place was HOT. When we walked in, I almost walked back outside because it was so unbearable. Glad I decided against that because the food was awesome. (Also, I can only imagine how much hotter it was for the cooks in the kitchen.) We had the crunchy dragon roll and a "fish" and chips dish. The fried onions and tempeh in the dragon roll were delicious, and the roll was filling yet somehow still light. Perfect to not weigh you down in hot weather. The "fish" was good, but the chips were the star - they were some of the best I've ever had. Both portions were large and a good value. The service was pretty subpar, though I'm definitely comparing it to American service where waitstaff are trying to earn bigger tips. The waiter didn't bring us any drinks despite us ordering two waters and a soda, and when we reminded him, he seemed annoyed and only brought the waters (though still tried to charge us for the juice at the end). I wouldn't have minded as much except it was so ungodly hot in the restaurant that I would think a waiter would want to make sure their patrons had some source of hydration. But, he was probably truly annoyed by the heat and not us, which I totally understand. Overall, a great place. I would definitely go back next time I'm in Amsterdam. read more

We were looking for a vegetarian restaurant in Amsterdam and found this Vegan restaurant close to where we were at that time. It was a little difficult to locate the restaurant but once we got there, it was all packed. It's a small restaurant and there were only two people working (one was the chef and another one taking food orders). They both looked super busy which was understandable since all the tables were taken at the restaurant. It took a little time for our food to arrive but once it was there, both me and my husband were happy. It's a Jamaican and Japanese fusion cuisine and everything we ordered was tasty and their portions were pretty descent. I highly recommend trying there dragon rolls. You won't regret it! read more

When we spotted this place on Yelp, we assumed it's in tourist central and went in with low expectations. The decor is not great and the seats were not all clean or well maintained. BUT, the food was out of the world. We had the Jamaican plate / platter and I don't believe we spoke through our meal! I also had a Fritz Cola that reminded me of colas (not coke) we had growing up. Was looking for a cool little vegan spot in Amsterdam and came across this little gem. Not many tourists around, (we went on a Sunday afternoon), got greeted by the owner who is a very happy Caribbean man who truly wants to show you the gift of food. "I am vegan, everything here is vegan" is what he tells us and we're even more excited about the food on its way. My friends who are strictly vegan were obsessing over their dishes (sorry I forgot what they were, but pics are attached!), and I ate the veggie fried rice along with spring rolls! The veggie fried rice had SO much flavor-- truly one of the best I've had that I'm still thinking about it lol. Portions were just enough and prices are definitely reasonable for what you're getting. We ended up chatting with the owner after dinner and we met his wife and son too. It is a beautiful family business and I'm happy to support them. This was the first restaurant I visited in Amsterdam due to its proximity to the typical attractions in the city. The space itself is small and interesting. It has a cozy feeling, I like it. The food - exceptional! I absolutely loved it. I could've eaten an entire plate of just the vegetables that were on my plate in the Vegan Plate meal. My traveling companion got the Jamaican Plate - he is not a vegan and he loved it. I tried some of his plate as well - such a wonderful coconut sauce, yum yum. I just got here from Paris and was desperate for some vegan food, so I stopped here. There was one employee and no one else, so he was very attentive to me. He answered all my questions about the dishes and he spoke perfect English! (I'm from America so this was great) I ordered the crispy vegan chicken roti wrap and it comes with two big wraps/burritos. It is absolutely delicious!!! I definitely recommend. I took it to go, but the seating inside has two tables. One table has four seats and one has about 10 or something. If you're a vegan (or even if you're not) eat here. You won't regret it. We got the Jamaican Plate and the Crispy Roti Wrap and both were amazing! The food at this tiny place is delicious and worth the wait - and wait is what we had to do. First for a free table, second for someone to clean the table and take our order, but mostly for our food. Again, it was worth the wait. The service is friendly, but slow and somewhat inattentive (we ordered an extra water - never showed up (and we didn't get charged for it), we asked for extra napkins - they never showed up). All in all a place with amazing (vegan) food, but bring time and don't expect perfect service. read more

Yes, they're busy, it might take them a moment to get to you if you need something--but honestly, our food came to the table really quickly. And it was delicious. We tried the dragon roll. Generally, I'm not a fan of American-style sushi with fried bits of this and that in it, but this was delicious. And huge. After a day traveling, something salty, savory, crispy, starchy was just the thing. I had donburi karage, my wife had the ramen, both were delicious. The ramen broth was an amazing flavor; full and satisfying without leaning too much on salt--which lets the depth and complexity come through. The noodles were absolutely perfect, and the crispy bits of fried "chicken" were perfectly done with a texture that that was eerily reminiscent of chicken. My donburi was equally flavorful, with a hint of underlying spice in the sauce; nothing to make you sweat, just a pleasant little warmth right up front on your tongue. The veg in the bowl were crisp and fresh, and the mock chicken flavorful. Mine could have used just a bit more done-ness to get the same amazing texture as the bits in my wife's ramen, they were a little doughy in comparison, but not objectionable. The atmosphere is not anything like fine dining; it's casual, earthy and hip in its own unique way. It reminds me of a few other restaurants that I've loved that were unpretentious expressions of the owner's sense of place. A lone speaker sits atop a refrigerator pumping out reggae, the walls are covered in murals in various states of completion, several high top tables are bolted together from dimensional lumber. She gave fewer than 0 shits about us. Sweet & Sour vegan chicken: was not sweet and sour in any sense. More stir-fried with caramelized onions. Curry vegan chicken: runny curry, tasted like it was from a jar. I was expecting some of this homemade Caribbean magic... It came to 30 euros*. I about choked. One star for large portion and brown rice. Let the missing 4 stars propel you somewhere else! I seriously cannot warn you enough to stay away! Something has gone wrong here! I've been to Terra Zen Centre a few times now and like it well enough. There are some things which can be frustrating but overall the quality of the food is good especially for vegan eaters out there. My frustrations come from the slowness of the service. Even when I called ahead to try and get takeout it is not ready when I arrive. It is usually packed inside so I'm sure that's part of the reason. My other concern is why do you so-called vegan restaurants try to make their dishes what a meat dish would be without the meet. It causes them to use this strange me like products and the consistency is just never there. I would much rather have it where the dishes made using vegetables and just tasty and healthy rather than trying to emulate what a chicken tastes like. Maybe this is an easy transition for heavy need to meters into the vegan lifestyle. read more

This place is awesome. It's owned by a Japanese woman and her Jamaican (I'm pretty sure) husband. They (I also think) do the cooking, while their older two children take orders and bring out food (and the little ones walk in and out of the restaurant). The family lived in Japan until a few years back, when they moved to Amsterdam. The food is a mix between Japanese and Jamaican, and though dishes are titled as one or the other, you can definitely feel that the Japanese dishes are influenced by Jamaican flavors, and that the Jamaican dishes are influenced by Japanese flavors. I really liked that. We got the Jamaican plate and Udon, and both were really cool spins on the traditional. I was also a really big fan of the space itself. My SO and I had some weird experiences in Amsterdam that definitely had to do with race, so it was nice to enter a space that felt really relaxed and welcoming, and non-normative in the best way. If I were ever to return to Amsterdam, I would hope that this place were still around, because I would genuinely be so happy to come back. read more

On a recent trip to Amsterdam, my boyfriend and I set out to find some delicious vegan eats. We went to Vega Life (an all vegan clothing and shoe store) and asked the friendly woman working there for suggestions. She mentioned about 3-4 places that were vegetarian and one 100% vegan cafe called TerraZen Centre. It turned out not to be too far from the Vega Life store, so we headed on over... When we walked in, we were greeted by the owner Izaba (I think that's how you spell it) who is very friendly. We checked out the menu and there seemed to be lots of Japanese and Japanese fusion style cuisine to be had. We also noticed there were a few Caribbean dishes on the menu. Interesting mix of styles! We ordered the fried rice with veggies and the veggie burger. Izaba quickly went to work making our food. I can tell he has fun cooking and definitely puts love into it because the food came out delicious. We sat and had a wonderful chat with Izaba where we exchanged stories of our travels, life, and how Izaba came to open TerraZen Centre. My boyfriend and I finished every last crumb of our food and told Izaba we'd be back for more of his good food and conversation. The next day, we got to TerraZen, ordered the spicy ramen and the Caribbean-style rice and peas with bread, and picked up where we left our conversation with Izaba. We also talked with a very cool guy who is a regular at TerraZen and a very sweet waitress. The food was great again, and I finished every last bite. Though it was scrumptious, I could have had the ramen spicier, but the Netherlands isn't known for spicy food, is it? haha. Oh, and I have to add that the ginger tea Izaba makes is wonderful and perfect for cold winter days. TerraZen is a great place to eat yummy and healthy food and meet wonderful, down to earth people. Ok... Here is the review that should open your eyes and help you understand this restaurant. Terra Zen is not a typical restaurant...you will not have a typical waiter/waitress at your beckoned call waiting on you and serving you. This is a family run business. Dad is the mad scientist in the kitchen creating magic on a plate and the girls are there to assist "at times." I have been coming here for a few months now and I don't even ask for anything I just ask him to make me a plate. The dining area will remind you of eating at your mom's house. There is one round table enough for five or six people and one small square table one that will seat four. The idea is communal eating. You'll be surprised who you end up sitting with and talking to...maybe me! I've met a couple from Iowa, two women from Finland, a couple from Japan, a guy from Isreal...it's about connection and meeting people. People with the same type of food interests and ideas that you have. The conversations that you get into is just as great as the food. Be prepared to wait...making vegan food to order is not a McDonaldized thing. It takes time. If you want fast food there is a lovely Burger King a few blocks away. I have read several complaints about the "weird" atmosphere, the long wait time. WE ARE VEGANS! We ARE WEIRD! We are bucking the system for whatever reason intolerance, allergy, or morality. We do things differently on a day to day so why would it shock you to have to wait for great vegan or even gluten free food from here. He doesn't have an assembly line in that kitchen...it's just him and the family. The service is what YOU bring to the table. Help yourself to the beverage that you want in the chiller, sit down and talk to someone that you've never met. Judged by its decor, repetitive reggae playlist and informality (a very courteous child took my order the first time) I was skeptical of this place the first time I tried it. I usually don't trust places where menus have pictures of the food they sell. But that particular night I was extremely hungry so I didn't mind the pictures and I decided to order a tofu dish. I was so glad I gave this place a chance. The food was outstanding, and by far the best vegan food I had in Amsterdam. I had four meals in total (two dinners and two lunches) and all of them were superb. The food options are an eclectic mix of Japanese, Asian and Caribbean dishes (inspired by the owners' respective origins) + fake meat options, perhaps to cater the tourists. I tried those recommended by the owner and all were delicious. I loved the curry, the lentil soup, the crispy tempeh sushi, the fermented soybean bowl, the gyoza with rice and the tofu dishes with vegetables and rice. The green smoothy, and the coconut and survival cakes for dessert were delicious as well. I usually dislike fake meats, but the bite I tried of the fake chicken was perhaps the best I've ever had. The bottom line of this place is that the food is very simple, however, it is so perfectly cooked and fresh that it simply tastes amazing. Just a couple of warnings, you will likely wait a long time to be served, especially if it is packed (usually over the weekends), since each dish is prepared from scratch. Food will not be cheap in spite of the rustic silverware and decor of the place. However, when you try it you will appreciate its freshness and seasoning that you won't mind the prices. Our first night walking in here, we were a bit skeptical...the place was small, only a few places to actually sit, and it doesn't give off a high sanitary score vibe. We looked over the totally vegan menu and i had trouble deciding. There were a lot of delicious sounding items. I asked for the gentleman's suggestion and he recommended one of the tofu dishes. After he went back to the kitchen to prepare the food, smoke began to fill the area with a 'something is burning' smell raising our level of concern of what we were going to be served. A few minutes later, our Jamaican chef emerged from the smoke with our plates of food. It turned out to be the greatest prepared tofu dish in the world with flavor throughout. It was so good, as were the vegetables that came with it. We came back again a few days later and I ordered the same thing. Again, delicious. I super enjoyed this meal! I was a bit turned off about the prospect of going to a Japanese-Caribbean restaurant instead of soaking up Dutch culture, but this was such a fantastic meal. It's a small place but there was plenty of room the night we went. It may take a moment for the food to come out but it's made fresh "in the now" and it's well worth the wait.
