Spicy & sour broccoli (vegan)
Matt B.

5 stars for the food, 4 stars for the whole experience due to the very cramped and extremely muggy environment that had us sweating buckets -- turn on the AC! -- and the small portions for the price you pay. Coming from Vancouver, we have high standards for Chinese food, especially Szechuan cuisine. Having been on the road for a couple weeks, we missed good Chinese, so I googled around to see if there might be an authentic Szechuan place in Amsterdam that could cater to vegetarians/vegans. Turns out this place can if you're willing to pay and endure a not terribly pleasant eating environment. We ordered: -Sichuan ma po tofu (€18.80). This was extremely authentic and impressive. They don't skimp on the chili oil, fermented bean paste and Szechuan peppercorns -- very oily, nicely spicy and tingly, with just enough green onions. Honestly, this is one of the best executions of the dish I've tasted. Phenomenal. 5/5 -Spicy & sour broccoli (€16.80). Solid, simple dish, cooked with Szechuan peppercorns, chilis, garlic and a nice, gentle brown sauce. Good stuff. 4.5/5 -Dan dan noodles (€16.80). This was one of the best dan dan noodles I've had -- lots of Szechuan peppercorns, tangy, spicy, and sesame-y. Noodles were nicely cooked and the pickled veggies are perfect. Phenomenal dish. 5/5 ...plus some steamed rice for 2 (€3). A few others notes: -The menu is laid out terribly and in no obvious order. They need to completely overhaul this, allowing you to see a bigger picture of what's available. The dishes are numbered but not in order (!). -Service is friendly enough but a bit disorganized and lacking coordination. -Again, it was truly muggy in here. It was only 18C outside, yet inside it felt like I was in SE Asia without AC. We were sweating buckets before the food even arrived, and even more so by the time we were done. Overall, phenomenal, authentic, vegan-friendly Szechuan food. Just not a terribly comfortable environment to enjoy it in. Recommended with this caveat.

Fried pork ribs

Craved for a good "mabo tofu" we stopped by at this restaurant. It's a Sichuan restaurants which the use of chili is expected. We shared a "mabo tofu" and fried pork ribs. Both were excellent. Simply tasted as expected. Hot and tasty. The cook really fast to get all the food ready and served on our table. Nice and friendly service too. $$$

Food tastes great, typical Chinese food with lots of oil. It's in the red light district, it's fun area. Service is good.

The duck soup on the first page of the 50 page menu was my reason for going and I would go back for that alone.

Authentic Dim Sum in the Heart of Amsterdam If you are looking for authentic Chinese flavors near…read morethe Red Light District/Chinatown, Oriental City is the place to go. It's a multi-level restaurant that stays packed during prime hours, which is always a good sign for the food quality. They serve Dim Sum all day, which is a huge plus. The flavors are very traditional. While the Dim Sum was solid across the board, the Beef Chow Fun was the absolute standout--perfectly prepared with that signature "wok hei" (breath of the wok). The staff isn't necessarily warm and fuzzy, but they are efficient. Don't expect a long chat, but you'll get your food quickly. Be prepared for a bit of a climb; the restaurant spans several floors and it appears to be stairs-only. It gets very crowded, so timing your visit is key. A must-visit for Chinese food fans in Amsterdam. Just be ready for a lively, busy environment!

This particular restaurant satisfied my craving for Asian food, located next to the Red Light District. Service was very helpful and friendly, food was just as good! Was also interesting to see the Asian staff speak Norwegian also to other customers. Great place to get your Asian food fix when traveling here.

In all honesty, the food was good and they got to our table quickly. The only reason I gave a 4 out…read moreof 5 was because it was uncomfortably hot in the dining room. We thought about leaving before placing our order but decided to bear it out since we were craving Sichuan. The chicken and the green beans were my favorites. It was really nice being able to taste the Sichuan peppers on the dishes. All together, great food but uncomfortable dining experience.

Their menu is impressively large and the dining room is small but inviting. Prices are quite high, but you are in a tourist area. We ordered a Kung pao chicken and a chicken fried rice to share. We both had a very weird 'chemical' taste that would occasionally occur with the Kung pao but neither of us could figure out what it was. The chicken fried rice was fine but contained very little chicken. My house white wine at 4.5 was fine as well as hubby had a Heineken. The biggest issue was the many Gnats that just descended on us once our wine arrived. If you zoom in on the picture, there were quite a few just hanging out after our plate we removed. We have been to many restaurants since we arrived here and this is the first with this issue. It got even worse once our food arrived. Very irritating. Service was just ok. We were here at a weird time because we are very jet lagged and trying to get on the time zone (needed dinner early). The staff were having their dinner so we felt a bit of a nuisance. Bill was about 50 euro.
