Small crowded restaurant in the busy area not to far from the Amsterdam Central Station. They don't take reservations. The food is tasty and comes out fast and hot. The servers are friendly and helpful. It would be nice if they would upgrade the restrooms. Only one for the whole restaurant so far I know. Each time I'm in Amsterdam it's a must place to come eat. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

So while in Amsterdam I found this place on Yelp and immediately became obsessed! This place is very busy and operates on a first come first serve bases, thankfully I was traveling alone so my wait was very minimal. The first time I visited I had the duck buns and Shrimps Dumpling Soup Small. The duck buns are good but I wont necessarily run back for but the shrimp dumpling soup is delicious! Simple, filling and yummy! After traveling to London I had 2 more days in Amsterdam and ran back to this place for more soup considering how cold it was and how much I loved the dumpling soup. Second time around I went a little crazy and ordered way toooo much food I should have only gotten the soup. The Fried Shrimps Dumpling Soup again delicious and Sui Kau Small delicious!

As a solo travler I am always looking for great solo resturants. New King is a good solo dinning spot. Located in the heart of Chinatown with a big window display, New King is easy to find. The right door to enter however, not so much. There are 2 doors were you can enter the restaurant but the actual front door is up a couple narrow stairs. Once inside they may seat you in the up stairs dinning area or downstairs dinning area. I went in the wrong door downstairs (eek!) but they were nice and sat me immediately. At prime lunch time (12:30pm) it was not very busy. While the space is small you don't feel over crowded which can sometimes happen when ask for a table for one. The menu is large and they have pictures of all of dishes, which is helpful, albeit sometimes difficult to see due to size. I started the small wonton soup (€7.50) which was a solid choice. 4 large succulent pork wontons in a light clear broth. I would have been full from this but I had to try a noodle dish. I opted for the flat noodles (€15.00). With the noodles you can choose 1 protein or 3 for an extra €.50. The protein options are: roasted duck, crispy pork, bbq pork, and chicken. I went all in with the 3 most popular proteins: roasted duck, crispy pork, bbq pork. This is definitely large enough to share. They give you a healthy portion of each protein plus the noodles underneath. Be careful with the duck, there are tiny bones that are not easily spotted. The crispy pork had a perfect crispy skin that added a great texture to the heaviness of the dish, and the bbq pork had that classic Chinese bbq pork sweetness, complete with the hint of pink-ish/red coloring to the skin. I am a big fan chili oil but beware of the chili oil they give you. A little goes a LONG way. I underestimated its power and ended up with tears running down my cheeks. Still yummy though! All in all this is a solid place to eat if you are walking around Chinatown and have a craving for classic Chinese flavors.

Very busy part of town even in the later hours of the evening. Waited about 20 minutes at 8pm on a Saturday but there is a pub near by to kill time with a beer. Crowded and all tables full, but spacious. Ordered the fat noodles with crispy pork and it was enough for 2. Noodles were very chewy and fresh and pork was flavorful and crispy; lots of fat but that's what gives it the flavor! Be wary if you ask for chili oil...it is very different than what I'm used to in the states. Bigger punch and more potent and spicy

Food was filling, delicious, and hot. Portion sizes are good, though a little pricier than the average location. Staff are nice. The lighting is pleasantly low, though the interior is a little cramped.

This was a surprising but welcome find! Hearing and reading good things about New King prompted a telephone call from our hotel concierge to request a dinner reservation for us, which was bluntly refused, with the admonition "first come, first served." When Diane and I arrived to take our chances on being seated the next day, I quickly understood the reason for the "no reservations" policy. The restaurant simply did not need to reserve seating to acquire customers. The restaurant was filled with diners and packed with other individuals seeking admission. Fortunately for us, we scored a table for two in close proximity to other diners after only a five-minute wait. While there wasn't much elbow room between tables, the mood of diners seated around us was happy, friendly, and upbeat. Great cooking can generate such effects. Sensing a special dining experience after perusing the menu, we ordered expansively, beginning with a small bowl of Sui Kau Soup (Shrimps Dumpling Soup) that was not so small. And what succulent dumplings they were floating in a very pleasing broth! Hot and juicy! Our three appetizers were also well executed and quite tasty: crunchy Vegetable Spring Rolls; Fried Shrimp Pancakes; and Fried Shrimps--all washed down with hot Chinese Tea that appeared to be Green Tea, and four bottles of still water. For entrees, Spiced Sizzling Beef with Green Onions, White Onions, and Red and Green Bell Peppers featured scallops of tender medium-rare Filet, while Beef in Oyster Sauce was also tender and saucy. Portions were large, and service attentive and fine. Ordered items were uniformly outstanding, with steaming delicious dishes timely served in an authentic Chinese restaurant situated within a Western European capital.

OVERALL: decent restaurant that's definitely overpriced for what you get. Good location and a lot of seating. Service is mediocre. I came here during a solo trip and ordered the wonton soup (large). I asked for a tap water and they said they didn't serve tap water - which is fine I guess, but most places would give you water if you asked. The wontons were good, but I asked if they contained shrimp and they told me incorrectly that it was shrimp-free and only pork. Unfortunately I did taste shrimp and saw chunks of shrimp in the wontons - not a huge problem for me, since I just don't like the taste, but it could be bad for people with severe allergies. Broth was salty and the vegetables they gave you were very mediocre.

Since I was in Amsterdam, I thought I'd compare Chinese food here to the states. They're advertised as Mandarin Cuisine. A friend and I went here during lunch hour, and there was hardly a crowd when we first arrived. The restaurant tables filled up before we finished lunch. We started with a pot of hot tea. I'm guessing that they don't serve water at some places? The server brought me sparkling water and automatically charged me for it. A bit annoying right there. We ordered 2 dishes to share. The Kip In Zoetsure Saus (Orange Chicken?) and the Mihoen Singapore (Singaporean Style Noodles). This chicken came with a side of rice. The Kip was battered chicken stir fried with pineapple, onions, bell peppers, and cooked in sweet sauce. I particularly liked the noodles. It was stir fried with different vegetables and shrimp. Tastes a bit like curry. This was just the right amount of food for 2 people. It must be a thing here, but I noticed that service wasn't great. They never came back to check on us after food was brought to the table. I was also irritated by the fact that they asked me to tip with cash, because I had paid with my AmEx card. Most places don't expect a tip, but they knew I was American and asked for it. Not surprising at all with a Chinese Restaurant.

Duck, soy sauce chicken, bbq pork, stir fried noodles

After going weeks without having good Asian food, I was going insane. I could only eat pastries and pasta for so long. Then I come to Amsterdam and I was saved by New King. To start off the service was fast and there was no wait. I don't recall what I exactly ordered, but it was a combination plate with duck, soy sauce chicken, bbq pork, and some form of a base layer (white rice, fried rice, stir fried noodles, etc...). I got the stir fried noodles. The first bite could've made me cry on everything that I love. The duck and the chicken were so tender and so well made. The bbq pork was also good, but not the best that I've ever had. I would 100000% recommend this place.

Sea Palace in Amsterdam? That's for tourists! (Okay, I was a tourist). But if you're looking for good Chinese cuisine, you have to go into Chinatown. And that, we did. There was a long line and fans of this restaurant, so we decided to give it a try. Looking at the menu, the prices were a bit on the expensive end. Being away from home for so long, I wanted some comfort food. For me, that was crispy roast pork and roast duck over rice. - Roasted crispy pork - the skin was crispy. The meat was soft. The dipping sauce was slathered on my rice. This was good. Almost like a suckling pig. - Roast duck - so fatty, so good. The skin was juicy and crispy. The meat was soft and juicy. They can really cook a good roast duck. FYI for tourists: They speak Dutch, English, Mandarin, and Cantonese! ------------------------------------------------------ Sea Palace in Amsterdam? - Babi Pangang - gebrande knapperig varkensvlees. De huid was knapperig. Het vlees was zacht. De dipsaus was slathered op mijn rijst. Dat was goed. Bijna als een speenvarken. - Geroosterd eend - zo vet, zo goed. De huid was sappig en knapperig. Het vlees was zacht en sappig. Ze kan echt koken een goed geroosterde eend. Ter informatie voor toeristen: Ze spreken Nederlands, Engels, Mandarijn en Kantonees!

While the food here is decent, I find the price to be high and service was terrible. Specifically we were told multiple times by a waitress that tip was not included and suggested that we tip in cash. I believe she's at least repeated that six times in a short 60 seconds. Having done research on the Netherlands and knowing in advance that tip is not part of the culture here, it made me extremely uncomfortable to have felt being coerced into tipping. Likewise, prior to paying for our food, she told us we need to go to the counter if paying in credit card. We said okay and she urged us to follow her, again multiple times, even though I had asked to use the restroom prior to leaving. At the end of the day, we felt forced to leave in a short period of time due to pressure coming from the rudeness. Now if you're reading for the food - most of the food I found to be pricey. However, this is coming from New York and not familiar with the pricing here. They did have a make your own soup noodle or make your own rice bowl option that I found to be the most cost effective. Overall, the food was tasty. I ordered the large with roasted duck, soy chicken, and wanton. To my surprise, wanton tasted the best. They were large wantons with mushroom and pork inside. The soy chicken was good too, albeit the taste was less noticeable being in soup. The roasted duck however was too dry and I would not suggest it. The food here was in fact okay, but the service was just very uncomfortable (and I only mentioned the tabling part of it, the seating part of it was just as bad). At the end of the day, if you're just here for eat and go and service would not affect your meal, then this could be it. Unfortunately, it was just not the right place for me during a trip.

Hot and sour soup (has duck meat instead of traditional pork)

Chinatown next to red light district...maybe Chinese food is aphrodisiac. Hot and sour soup had duck meat, ok flavor. My husband had crispy pork over fried rice, the pork skin was crispy and portion was big. The napa cabbage side was completely unnecessary for this meaty greasy meal option:) I had Peking duck over wide fried noodles, duck was juicy but salty...more roast duck than authentic Peking duck, my husband suspect they injected the duck with saline to plump up the duck meat. I enjoyed the noodles. We also had eggplant with tofu pot vegetarian dish, but lack flavor or salt. Service was extremely friendly. (Written by husband)

It's a multi-level restaurant that stays packed during prime hours, which is always a good sign for the food quality. They serve Dim Sum all day, which is a huge plus. The flavors are very traditional. While the Dim Sum was solid across the board, the Beef Chow Fun was the absolute standout--perfectly prepared with that signature "wok hei" (breath of the wok). The staff isn't necessarily warm and fuzzy, but they are efficient. Don't expect a long chat, but you'll get your food quickly. Be prepared for a bit of a climb; the restaurant spans several floors and it appears to be stairs-only. It gets very crowded, so timing your visit is key. A must-visit for Chinese food fans in Amsterdam. Just be ready for a lively, busy environment!
