It's 8am and my mom, cousin, and I had to kill some time before we check into our hotel at 3pm so we decided to go into Tai Pan Bakery to get some breakfast and coffee. FOOD: 1. Rousong (aka Pork Sung) Bun: SOOOO much pork sung in one bun! This was my favorite of the items we ordered today. Pork sung (dried fluffy shredded pork) was fresh, flavorful, and so abundant! The bun itself was warm, soft, and fresh when we got it. I LOVED IT! It's hard to find one SO full of rousong and with delicious bread. 2. Portuguese Egg Tart - Everyone's raving about these Portuguese egg tarts, but they seem pretty average to me. I've had better ones in So.Cal, or at least ones that are just as good. Yes, it was creamy and tasty, but I didn't think it was worth the hype. 3. Egg White Targ - Okay, this was weird for me. It's got a very liquid consistency and it seems like, without the crust the tart would flow right out! It also has somewhat of an artificial sweet taste. I swear the tag said it's Egg White Tart, but many pictures are showing it as "Almond"...maybe that's why it tastes so odd. Tai Pan is supposedly one of the better chinese bakeries (which usually justifies the higher price compared to most chinese bakeries). We walked in craving for Egg Tarts but left unimpressed. This bakery is super solid! We were in a hurry; we had to get across town for a family engagement, so I ran in here while my fiance idled in the car. As a connoisseur of Chinese bakeries (I love the savory items!), I was pretty impressed with this bakery. There's ample selection, and so many types of the same item in different flavors. Also, everything is labeled --- and in English too for ease! It's serve-yourself style. Just grab a tray and pile it on. Don't miss the hot buns in the warmer; they're serve yourself. Today is my birthday, October 21. My dad decided to buy a cake from Tai Pan bakery, the Green Tea Fresh Fruit Cake, because their cakes are better than Fay Da's according to my parents. On a dark chocolate sign it said "Happy Birthday Eric" ..... While I do have a cousin named Eric, my name is Erin. At first I thought nothing of it because of a single typo. But that wasn't the only surprise. When cutting the cake I had great difficulty cutting the bottom. I was confused and asked my dad what kind of cake he bought in which he replied a Green Tea fruit cake. I asked him why is there something hard at the bottom of the cake. That was when my dad helped me cut a slice and revealed....... CEREAL! I was speechless. From the outside it looks like a normal fruit cake, but the inside is raised on a bed of FROSTED FLAKES. Never have I EVER seen a fruit cake made this way, unless the customer asks for it. It is false advertising especially if you say it's a Green Tea Fresh Fruit cake and never mention you include cereal at the bottom. A bakery would never sell a Cherry Pie and put lettuce underneath it. The cake itself is a bit drier than what I prefer, but the frosting melts in your mouth. I know they actually use fresh fruits because of how sour the strawberry was. Next year I'm ordering from Fay Da or Paris Bagette, anything better than what I got for $32 here. read more

This is a very busy bakery that is always packed! I come here often for my pineapple buns. This time I had a sore throat so Marvin got me some milk tea as well. This was my first time trying warm milk tea and k wasn't sure what to expect. I really enjoyed it though, pleasantly surprised. The pineapple bun wasn't as fresh as I would have liked it however it was still extremely delicious. Warming up the bun in the oven especially makes it taste fresher. This store has less of the hustle and bustle of their sister store in chinatown. I came here once with a relative to cash in a baked goods card (received from the bridal party). We got some hot dog buns, some egg tarts, slices of sponge cake and two milk teas. Their sponge cake is moist and slightly sweet. I enjoyed the coffee flavored sponge cake. Plenty of people inside, and there's no real good line system, you just get in there and if you want something, just go for it. Compared to the larger Fay Da chain, it is still more cramped and dated looking inside, but it is excellent food wise. There are loads of cake offerings, buns, rolls, twists, puff pastries, moon cakes and much more. Also, several flavors of egg tarts, and more meat offerings than the average Chinese bakery (pork chop bun, hamburgers, hot dog buns, etc.) There is even a hot dish section on the right with noodles, soups and fried rice!
