If you love shabu shabu, you need to check this place out! If you never had it, I recommend trying this place. I was immediately excited when I found it on Yelp, and it exceeded my expectations. The restaurant is hidden away - you won't see it from the outside - and you have to head downstairs inside the building. It has a cool, speakeasy kind of vibe that feels very intimate and secluded. We were a party of two and lucked out with a last-minute cancellation. We didn't realize reservations were needed, but we will definitely be calling ahead next time! We were welcomed by Micaiah, who served us and turned the meal into a whole experience. We learned that her family owns the restaurant, and I saw all of them helping out. I've never been to a shabu shabu spot that felt so intimate and personal. We chatted a lot with Micaiah and her dad - they are just lovely, personable people who made our visit that much more special. We ordered the prime beef cut and the Wagyu, which were both great paired with their sauces, broth, and fresh veggies. Our first bite was what they called a "family" bite, and it was chef's kiss! The shoyu sauce was the best I've had. We finished with ice cream and a matcha cheesecake, which was light and not too sweet. At the end of the meal, they pack up your leftover food, broth, plus an additional broth concentrate to take home or eat there. Having that the next morning hit and was delicious. THE BEST JAPANESE SHABU SHABU I HAD BY FAR!!!!! So far this is the only legit Asian restaurant I've had in Reno. How it works? You have to make reservations because they prepare your ingredients with love and care. For night time reservations, it's like a speak easy kind of entrance, because the basement was already close, Sean, one of the owners, will pick you up and lead you to a secret elevator that descend to the basement. They aim for a zero-waste food, so all your orders will not go into waste (I will explain later). Each person has its own pot. For now, since they just opened recently, they have seven induction stoves --- that meant they can only take 7 person at a time. You will choose your protein and size of the pot, they have the smallest one, which they call chubi, then ninja, sho time, king kong and gorilla. I chose beef belly (a must try) and fish balls (this is not just a regular fish balls because it has a roe/fish eggs inside!) -- then they will teach you how to eat in a way you will experience the best shabu shabu experience. If you have left overs, don't worry, you can take it home -- they will prepare it for you so you can just reheat it and eat. (The soup was still so so good the next day!) The sake (rice wine) that they have had different flavors. It was my first time to taste one with flavors. I also tried its unfiltered sake, and oh boy, it brought me back the times when I had a dinner with Japanese consul (one of my perks as a former journalist) and my travel in China. Their cheesecake is also a must try! It was a guiltless cheesecake because it was low carbs and low calories. The owners, Yuki and Sean are very friendly, accommodating, and very mindful of the food -- they don't want the food to go into waste! I love the ambiance -- I had my birthday party there, and felt like we have the restaurant all to ourselves! It was intimate, clean with simple but functional interior. The last we dined in there (which was the third time) they are expanding and adding more inductions to accommodate the demand, 'cause people are coming back and referring this restaurant to friends. Okay, wow. I have heard how great this place is, definitely worth the hype. I genuinely loved it. Flavor profiles were great. It was so delicious and I am new to hot pot, so I'm sold. The sauces to dip your veggies and meat were absolutely delicious. The sesame dipping sauce can be customized to add a bit of heat by adding chili oil. I chose just one drop, for the most gentle mild spice level, definitely worth it. Spice can sometimes take away from a meal so I don't overdo it, but I probably can push for an extra drop next time. The citrus ponzu was delicious. It's all the flavors I love. The vegetable platter is perfect to accompany the meat and you have your bowl of rice to go with the meat and vegetables. I was guided through the entire process and it was very helpful, grateful for that. You get to choose your meat type, and how much you want of it. Honestly it's perfect. I don't eat a lot and I still chose 7oz of meat and had plenty to eat and enough for my "to go soup". The concept to add everything you didn't eat in a to go container (some may say that's basic or normal) well I think it's awesome because it's no longer just cooking your meat in a broth and dipping in sauces accompanied with rice, it's a whole different meal at home. Tried this place last night and, oh my, we may have found our new favorite restaurant in Reno. Getting there is part of the experience. You enter the back of an unassuming building and head down a few flights of stairs into "The Basement," which immediately adds to the charm. You choose your protein and the portion size you want, while everything else is included. There are also a few add-ons available if you'd like to customize your meal further. We went with the 4-ounce Prime Beef and the 7-ounce Center Cut Pork Loin. The staff taught us how to properly "swish swish" the meat in the broth and pair it with the vegetables. The flavors were outstanding. What really impressed us was what happened at the end of the meal. Instead of simply clearing the table, they combined the remaining broth, vegetables, noodles, and sauces into a take-home soup. We enjoyed it the next evening, and it was absolutely delicious. We also decided to share the Passion Fruit Cheesecake for dessert, which was the great way to end the meal. The restaurant is run by mom and dad, with their daughters helping out, creating a warm and welcoming family atmosphere. Everyone was incredibly friendly and accommodating. This is a newer Japanese hot pot restaurant to the 775. Tadaima Shabu Shabu is located in the former historical Post office building's basement in downtown Reno. I took the hubbs out to celebrate his Father's day and decided to make a reservation here before our show. Thank you to one of my out of town besties that messaged me about this restaurant; I found it sooner. :) Their seating is limited and it's a reservation only, so do call ahead to ensure they have a spot for you. We were welcomed and seated right away. I was pleasantly surprised to sit and see my name on a placard. This little detail made a memorable meal that much more special. I loved the vibe and that the smaller counter facing in made it more intimate. The party next to us was finishing up, so we felt like we had the place to ourselves although the larger bar facing out was full behind us. I'm horrible that I didn't ask for the two young ladies names that took care of us. They were both fantastic and attentive yet let us explore and just be. We both ordered from their Prime beef platter I did the 7oz. and the hubby ordered the 20 oz. and we both added two eggs. Next time, I'll try the wagyu or the beef belly. I just would have felt guilty after my hot Pilates class to indulge in Wagyu and dessert. We mixed and experimented with their ponzu and sesame sauces; they were both delicious and I loved being able to adjust the heat level. My favorite part was watching the making of my soup with my leftover steak, veggies and sauces. The owner's daughter was chatting with us and shared with us their journey there. She told us, "Tadaima" in Japanese translates to you're home. I felt this and their mission was delivered in every detail here. We ended our meal with a heavenly slice of their guava drizzled passionfruit Japanese "dreamy cheesecake". Our server sold me on the light, 10 grams of protein and no additional sugar. It was just as she described. We loved our interactive meal and that this beautiful restaurant. I was shocked to find out it was a year old. It was the hubby's first interactive hot pot experience. That's my fault that I hadn't taken him sooner. In my 20's hot pot was one of the things my friends and I would drive to Ca for the day. I loved everything about this meal especially my soup that I had as my post-workout meal today. It was more flavor packed then when I first tried it. Tips: Make reservations ahead, you might be able to get a reservation day of but there is limited seating and go to the east side of the Basement next to the dock and call after 6pm where they'll come up and unlock the door for you- it's wheelchair accessible. Great selection of drinks including sake, wine and I had the unfiltered pilsner. They had my name on a place card which was a really nice touch. We had the choice meat (lean) 10 oz, Prime beef ninja 7oz (my favorite) and decided to add on Pork Belly and Chicken meat balls for dinner. I really enjoyed the meatballs they had a ginger garlic taste super good. It came with plenty of veggies and noodles but you can order more (this was a lot). They had tons of extra add ons so your not limited on choices. It's a small area (at least for now) but very cute and clean. Everyone was very friendly and helpful and the food was fresh and good. It was a little confusing about what to do (for me anyways). The husband and wife owner put their passion and time into providing the best offerings on a one on one service, and speaking to them I find that they only offer what they consider the best after moving in not too long ago from a city that has a wide selection of high end restaurants so they know what good food is all about. They have the best wagyu beef you will find in town and the best sauces. This is definitely added to our regular places we will be eating regularly in town when we want Asian and we want Shabu Shabu. I will warn you it is addicting. The ambiance is that of a speakeasy since they are in the basement of a historic building in downtown just down the streets from the original casinos in Reno. Be sure to make a reservation for them as the location is very small and intimate and I understand they plan to expand space in the coming months. 3.5 stars. The restaurant is within the basement of the old post office. We arrived at 7:30 PM for our dinner reservation. The building itself is closed, so you just have to call the owners to let you down the freight elevator. Try to have your party arrive together so they don't have to do multiple pick ups. Inside, we sat at the counter top. Each of us had our own individual stove tops. The menu was pretty self explanatory. Choose a meat and they'll teach you what to do. There were 6 of us, some of us wanted the same American Wagyu. It made sense to order 20 oz and share with our partner. The owner advised us not to share, as this would compromise the experience and it wouldn't come with additional veggies and sauce. We didn't understand why we couldn't just order an extra plate of veggies + sauce, but sure we just agreed bc we didn't want to oppose. My partner and I each ordered 7 oz (which is less meat and more expensive compared to ordering the 20 oz and additional sauce/veggies). They have a nice array of sake, wine, and even non alcoholic beer. It did take 1.5 hrs since we ordered for our food to come. The owner was nice and made good conversation. I saw in the back, Yumi (the owner/ wife) was slaving away in the back and hand cutting the meat. They did mention they were down 2 workers, but instead of talking to us, he could have helped her? I felt bad that she was doing so much work. When our food finally came, he taught us how to prepare the food. The veggies and meat were fresh and tasty. About 5 min later, he said "ok my job is done here" and proceeded to lay on the couch right next to us with his feet up and use his phone to watch videos on max volume. There was awkward silence, and one of the ladies in our party had to play background music to offset the awkward silence. In the end, he did use the rest of the ingredients to make the a soup for us to take home. I liked the no waste concept. I guess if you shared, you wouldn't each get the soup at the end but you're coming for the shabu not the soup, correct. We had a birthday cake and he gave us lighters and helped us prepare which was nice. Overall, I'm glad we came, but I don't think we would come again. read more

Authentic shabu-shabu experience complete with a tutorial on how to prepare, swirl, dip, and experience the umami flavors blossoming in your mouth! This is a slow, take your time and savor experience. Make a reservation to ensure you can get in! Since we moved to Reno, we've been hoping to find a hot pot or similar type place and nothing impressed us until today. We were treated like family from the first phone call to the dining experience itself. Sammy walked us through the simple menu, and gave great recommendations. The owners Sean and Yumi, head chef, both gave tutorials on how to do a "tasting" for each bite. The flavors were unmatched! The meat is incredible high quality texture and taste, and I'll bet money carved with a very sharp Japanese knife! The house made sauces are the real star, as they bring out the flavor of the meat and fresh veggies. For GF, ask for the soup to be made with tamari instead of soy sauce, and they will also provide home-made GF sauces. Rice noodles instead of udon noodles. Dinner last evening was incredibly special. Tadaima Shabu Shabu accomplished an incredible feat. They hit a home run on each category I hold dear when dining out. Service started strong and not once waned. They actually exceeded my expectation. the ambiance was a perfect 10. We ate early so we missed the freight elevator experience but will absolutely make sure we have an after 6:00 reservation so to not miss the "speak easy" vibe next visit.Dinner was absolutely amazing. If you want an experience that leaves you feeling like a welcome guest in a strangers home; guided through the menu options, order process and suggestions of their favorite proteins, as well as portions; enjoy an atmosphere similar to a speakeasy after hours (6pm or later), then you must make it a point to make a reservation. You'll need one, as they originally started with 7 seats, then expanded to more than triple. We celebrated here for our anniversary and were able to get a same day reservation, albeit 7pm. Because the building closed at 6, we were greeted at a 100 year old elevator, for an escorted ride down by one of the owners, Sean. We ordered a 14oz Beef Wagyu and 12pc chicken meatballs, which came with unlimited sauce, a plate of veggies for both of us, udon noodles and then eventually a soup to take home with all the leftovers. We ended up with no meat for the leftover soup (we ate too much and should have saved some), so ordered 2 more add ons to cook and take home. To finish the meal we shared a slice of peachy, apricot and ginger(candied toppers) cheesecake that was light, airy and as creamy as one would hope. After our first bite, we were plotting our return. We want to spread the word and make sure this restaurant thrives. It's special. Special deserves to be shared and not kept a secret.
