The tacos here are extravagant, burritos are out of this world, and tortas are legendary. Salsa is always up to expectations if not exceeding expectations. One of the most authentic Mexican places in town by far. Their pastor, asada, and chorizo is fantastic! I love this place so much reminds me of being back in Mexico! This was probably the coldest place i have ever had tacos before (-17 degrees), but it was well worth it. Located on a very small strip mall is this tiny shop (we actually drove right past it and had to u-turn). They post a daily special outside of the door. Walking in, you go to the cashier, order/pay and then grab a seat and wait for them to bring you your food. Tip - grab your table before you order because it fills up and that is what we observed everyone else doing otherwise you run the gamut of no seat to eat at. This place is tacos tacos tacos. I tried the chicken (x2) tacos and the nopal (cactus). The chicken was really good. Tender, juicy and flavorful with the salsas. The cactus was decent, but i felt could use more spices/seasoning. Definitely like the hot sauce more than the mild. The hot tasted like mild and i thought the mild salsa was sort of like a bland V8. Staff was super friendly and the restaurant was clean. For me, this will be a must return spot to try all of their other taco options and the daily specials like the soups which we saw multiple bowls come out of the kitchen. Just to start with my drink was delicious!!! I had an agua de jamica with a twist, it had fresh berries in it! The union of flavors with perfect the service was very sweet. I made a special trip to come here. Ok...it wasn't special because they were at one of my favorite breweries (Cynosure) on a Friday. It was a no-brainier. I know I'm prone to hyperbole but...there's no question this is the best Mexican food I've had in Alaska. I don't even know who is #2. In fact, it's some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. This is much more of a "Mexican street food" take on Mexican, rather than the "Tex Mex" take that seems to be pervasive in Alaska. The dishes here put a bullet through the heart of this myth some folks on Yelp have of "quality and quantity, you can't have both". Um, yes you can. And this place is a perfect example! I got a birria quesadilla and it was enormous and delicious. Perfectly cooked and generously portioned. Not to dunk on Tex Mex, but I find many Tex Mex places when you ask for "hot sauce" will do one of two things: 1) Bring you a bottle of crusty Costoco Tapatio. 2) Bring you a ramekin of "house salsa" that is moderaterly more spicy because someone took a pizza shaker and sprinkled red pepper flakes in it. NOT HERE! They have multiple sauces and they are all house-made! And the service, the kid taking the orders was...maybe 12? Anyway, he was awesome at his job. So cool to see such a family affair! And the food came out quick, REALLY quick. These folks have their processes dialed! Check the calendar on their website for their next location. I'm already thinking of following them to Double Shovel tomorrow. This is going to be one of those food truck with hour-long lines before too long, it's that good! read more

I am a huge fan of quesa birrias tacos, and make it a point to try them at every Mexican place that has them. I tried them here today and they were excellent. Lots of meat, the melted cheese was a nice touch and the tortillas were the best out of all I e tried. Tons of flavor from dipping them, then toasted plenty to make them crispy! I can't believe I've been missing out on these tacos! We tried them for the first time over the weekend when they were at Zip Kombucha. I got the queso birria tacos and they were SO GOOD! I love a good cheese pull. They paired perfectly with the peach habanero booch from Zip. Definitely a huge fan now and will be tracking them down again soon! read more

This place has inspired me to write my first ever restaurant review. I'm part Mexican with family in Texas, and Tacos El Primo made me really happy! There's lots of Mexican food in Alaska but nothing that really stands out. This place does. I had three tacos: asada, carnitas, and quesobirria. They were all delicious and were complemented nicely by the consomme and salsas. Those three tacos were very filling, so I ate my delicious flan for breakfast the next morning.
