Fragrant limes. Science was always a tough subject academically, but I can spot chemistry from a mile away. The duo inside this cart was akin to prime Han Solo and Chewbacca. Minimal communication was necessary to make my park bench dinner feel like so much more. Cash only businesses are a dying breed, but these guys have the best plot armor south of 33rd. This taco truck feels a bit like a hidden gem. Came across it while wondering around the Wall St. area and gave some tacos a try. I tried a new type of taco that I never had before which was this goat barbaccoa (chivo), which was amazing and very flavorful. I can't recall any taco truck or brick-and-mortar that I've been too that offers this, so I felt that was very unique and will get me to come back. The Al Pastor was also pretty banging. Fresh, juicy with pineapple, and very flavorful. We got some Jarritos as well and they were really cold which was delightful on a hot summer day. My girlfriend and I needed a bite to eat before grabbing a drink one Ave A one Friday night and decided this was a better choice than dollar slice pizza. This tiny cart has a big menu (tacos, burritos, cemitas, et al), and all for pretty cheap. She ordered two chorizo tacos and I snagged an al pastor and a barbacoa. At just $3.50 a piece (a dollar more for the barbacoa), it was a good deal. The al pastor was juicy and just smoky enough while the barbacoa was fall apart tender. I knew the tacos here would be amazing once I walked up to the tiny cart plastered with menus of all kinds of cheap Mexican food, and manned by two no-nonsense Mexican guys. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the tacos were just $2.50 each, since I've been getting used to these silly small plates restaurants charging $10 or more for a few tacos. I was even more pleased once I had a Steak Taco and a Chicken Taco here and discovered that these are some of the best, cheapest, most authentic tacos I've tried in NY (so far second only to Los Tacos No. 1 maybe). This cart is just great. You should definitely come try it, especially if you whine about how there is no good Mexican food in NY. Five stars for service and food! I passed by this taco "truck" a few times and in my quest to find the best Mexican food in East Village, stopped there on the way from work today. I believe it is a couple that runs this place and they're pretty efficient! I got two vegetarian tacos, extra spicy (it was not spicy enough though). I'm a fan! Went to their tiny (8 seater) hole in the wall restaurant at 438 E 9th St. between 1st and A and was mightily impressed by the cochinillo (suckling pig) taco. The beef taco was good too. Good amount of filling, a good 50% more than the typical hipster place. The home-made corn tortillas were light and flavorful; dare say some of the best I've had. I ordered the goat soup, thinking it was $3.99 rather than the $8.99 I paid. While I might have expected a bit more goat and vegetables at that price, I was glad I tried it: the goat itself was very tender and the red broth had an unusual, slightly sour, flavor that, once past the first few sips, was appetizing. Felt authentic. They offered me some tasty rice and beans too; guess that came with the soup? -------- Ok, I've since eaten here another four or so times, and had some dishes more than once, so I thought I'd update my review. The menu's changed since my first visit: no more goat soup. The cochinillo taco has never been quite as rich as the first time, but I do still like it. I've had the shrimp taco twice, first time mouth watering, second time plenty good. As for the yellow rice and black beans, the rice has moved on a spectrum from delicious warm and tender to not quite warm and a tad dry; the beans were generally creamy and rich, once a bit less so. The guacamole was very mild, no kick whatsoever. The flavors of the al pastor--pork with pineapple--didn't quite meld. I've tried the chicken with mole poblano: a thigh in lots of rich gravy which had a slightly sour, slightly medicinal, taste, that didn't appeal to me. The corn tortillas have ranged from fragrant to decent: still worth the extra $1 in any case. The guy in charge is friendly and was very concerned when mentioned the dry rice: he spoke to the guys in the kitchen. To summarize, when I want a more sophisticated balance of flavors I go to Barrio Chino, but when I want to eat locally, this is my spot.
