This truck is 10/10 as far as OG street tacos go. The chicken was juicy but not soggy, the carnitas was crispy without being dry. Their salsa is flavorful, portions are good, and prices are fair. The folks working were super nice and service was quick enough to warrant an extra tip. TBH THIS AREA FELT SKETCHY. I went in the middle of the day and felt like I was being watched (not in a good way). The truck is backed up along some empty parking spaces that kind of box you in as you wait for your food. I'm a construction worker so I wasn't too concerned but definitely feels like an easy place to get mugged. I'm definitely going back for food, but won't be hanging around very long. read more

My goto when I go to this truck is a regular steak burrito with everything, it comes out to about $11 even with chips and salsa... and it's probably the best burrito in Oakland in terms of flavor and juiciness, you can tell they spend time to add layers of flavor and this is coming from a self proclaimed burrito connoisseur. Service is nice everyone is friendly and quick waiting times and that's great for a family owned ambiance. The best way to describe the food is comfort food, it's like a home cooked meal. They really put the time into their food and I recommend the steak burrito with everything but that's just me. Hands down the best taco/burrito truck! I get 1-2 tacos every morning when I take the West Oakland Bart and the truck is open. I get so sad when I go to work early and they're not open yet. When I have time, I take Bart from SF to grab a burrito and head back. That's how delicious they are. read more

My my my I love Tacos. Thanks La Perla for always preparing all your meats fresh. Thank you for being right outside West Oakland Bart early enough to get my taco fix before lunch. Thanks for being friendly and understanding of my indecisive meat choosing. Thank you for the extra salsa, no problem. Thank you for the garnish of spicy carrots and radish!! Although La Perla is constantly serving customers, the wait has never been long to order or receive my food. La Perla consistently prepares my food correctly no matter how many special request I throw at them. They have a lone picnic table so you can chill for a bit and devour your burrito with extra sour cream. Buck Fifty for a taco. I'm all over it. read more

This place has really good food. They are always polite and do not over charge for authentic Mexican food. The sauce that they put on the tacos and burritos pure fire. Today I decided to change it up and get a burrito..... Can you say heaven. The location is right across the street from the Bart station. You can park on the side streets or In front of the truck. The customer service is amazing and they are able to make sure that they make your food just like you want it. It seems to be ran by a mother a father and their daughter. So if ever in the neighborhood I highly recommend them. read more

Cheap. Tons of meat choices! Always on location. After a while of seeing this truck every time I'm at the West Oakland BART station, I finally decided to try it out. The truck seems to be there pretty much all day during the week, I'm not sure about weekends though. I was surprised at how many different meats they had. They've got the basics (carne asada, pastor, pollo, carnitas), but some not so basics (lengua, barbacoa, cabeza, and even tripas!). I had to try as many meats as I could, so I went with five tacos-- asada, pastor, barbacoa, lengua, and tripas. All were $1.25 each, except for the tripas which was $2. It took a little while to get my food, but there was a couple people who had ordered ahead of me. I took my food home, and was happy with what I saw. A little star of street tacos, generously sprinkled with onions, cilantro, and green salsa, served with some carrots and jalapeno. The lengua was juicy and flavorful, definitely done right. So was the barbacoa. The asada was pretty standard, not super tender, but it got the job done for $1.25. The pastor was well seasoned, tender, delicious. The only thing I didn't like was the tripas. I had never had it before, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but it wasn't anything like the tripe you find in kare kare or pho. It definitely had an irony with an almost squid flavor, and wasn't for me. I can see where people who like liver might enjoy it, but not me. Even though I didn't enjoy every single meat I sampled, La Perla gets extra points just for the fact that they carry such a variety. I had never seen barbacoa or tripas on a truck before, and I've never seen tripas even in a Mexican restaurant before. I will definitely be back for the meats I enjoyed. read more

It's bad when you dream about the food. I enjoy every experience with La Perla's. Their steak tacos are always good and the young lady that fix them always is so kind and gets my order is always correct. The steak is marinated in grill taste. The burritos are to die for two. This is definitely one of the best food trucks in Oakland! The food is always fresh, made to order, and even though it's always packed with people around lunch time, they seem to get the orders out pretty quickly. Though I usually get the tacos (they're absolutely delicious!) I've also gotten delicious burritos from them. The tacos are simple, but the flavors are rich and authentic. This truck was recommended to me by 3 different coworkers at 2 different times after I had expressed my disappointment with a couple other trucks in the area, and I haven't gone back to any others since I tried them. It's in a great location (right near my job - literally across the street from West Oakland Bart station) and I've never had a problem with the food! I'm pretty sure they'll know my name in a little while. LoL. read more

I love being able to say that the food I pay for rates 5 Stars. While out photographing wicked cool street art around the West Oakland BART station I happened upon the La Perla #2 truck and gave them a try. To say I was not disappointed is an understatement, my carnitas tacos were heavenly and I was saddened by my last bite. Awesome urban street art and mighty fine tacos, well my day couldn't get any better than that. read more

Just moved to West Oakland and had been craving a solid burrito so I stopped here yesterday and picked up a regular Al Pastor initially not expecting much (i've been let down by a few Oakland burritos so far). I was certainly not let down by La Perla! The Pastor was wonderfully spicy (for me), greasy in the best way and the whole burrito was bursting with flavor. The salsa roja and pickled veggies were a perfect addition and rounded out the meal. I can't wait to try the barbacoa, lengua and the rest of the extensive menu. The location is also super convenient (close to bart) and the menu is pretty extensive (menu pic is still current as of 6/2014). I'm so glad I took the risk and for now, La Perla is my goto taco truck. read more

I've been looking for good dining options in this culinarily desolate section of West Oakland. Have passed by this food truck many times while transiting to and from West Oakland BART station right across the street, but never paid it much attention because I'm used to only getting good burritos from taco trucks in East Oakland. Anyways, I just went to pickup my car from the BART parking and figured it would be a good use of time to grab lunch while I was there. Looked this truck up on Yelp, saw 4.5 star rating, and was somewhat hesitant because there were only 20 reviews. However, I figured it was worth the $7 to try a burrito. SO glad I did! Burrito was a hearty size, the carne asada was very tasty, the tortilla was nicely toasted/pressed, and the sauce was delish (albeit could have been spicier, but I love super spicy food). Will definitely add this to the top of my list of go-to taco trucks in West Oakland! read more

Been here a few times and let me tell you this taco truck food is better than many of the mexican food places in oakland. I ordered steak burrito and the steak is always tender and juicy came with chips good ingredients (fresh parsley, onions, rice, beans, cheese that stretches) cooked right and food is always consistently good everytime and this place had polite service. This is my go to for burritos when in West Oakland, although there tortas is really where it's at. There tacos are great also, tasty and inexpensive, awesome if you just have a small apettite. Good hot sauce, and I love that they give you a jalepeno/carrot snack with every order. I would give this food truck 5 stars if they had ice cold drinks available, their drinks while being on ice are hardly cold. Really wish it was open on weekends. read more

This place makes Tacos Mi Rancho's Quesadilla look like greasy poop (don't get me wrong I love Tacos Mi Rancho). So one day I was really craving Tacos Mi Rancho but I didn't have any way of getting there from West Oakland, just so happened La Perla was across the street from where I was. So I order my favorite kind of quesedilla: al pastor! maybe 5 minutes later I get my food and go home. When I opened the plate the quesedilla was perfect, no oil! And there was plenty of carrots and chips! I bit into the delicious, cheesey, goodness and had a foodgasm; it was love at first taste. Before this place I would've said Tacos Mi Rancho is the best taco truck in Oakland, but now I'm convinced it's La Perla. Too bad they aren't open till 3:00 a.m. read more

I passed this truck several times a week for many months when I drove to the West Oakland BART station. The neighborhood is pretty drab looking, so I didn't really think it would be anything special. Finally, I tried a chicken taco. Soooo good. The chicken was seasoned really well. Another day, I bought chicken burritos for myself and my teenage daughter. We both enjoyed them very much. I'll definitely be back again. If you're over at the BART station, you might want to leave your car there while you're getting your food because there isn't really parking right by the truck that works well. The prices are low for what you get. read more

Any time I'm downtown late on the weekend I go to La Perla parked on 21st at Franklin. Their super burritos are the best thing to get. PASTORA SUPER BURRITOS are simply divine, and their hot sauce? TDF! They also give you some pickled veggies on the side. Say what?! It really can't get better than that people. read more

They have outdoor seating both in front and in their back patio, the front being sunnier while the back was cooler and shaded. It does seem like it can get crowded there due to the amount of customers who may choose to eat here instead of takeout, though. The food came out within 5 minutes. They also have a self-service water pitcher, and pitchers of half-and-half and oat milk next to it, which I assume is provided for those who get coffee (I didn't read through the entire drink menu). I got the vegan breakfast burrito, which has pan fried potatoes, roasted peppers and onions, mayocoba beans, chile morita mayonesa, avocado, corn, cilantro in a flour tortilla and it contains soy. It was savory, just a little bit spicy but tolerable for someone who can handle just mild level so I felt it was a good addition for providing more flavor given vegetarian burritos can otherwise often end up very plain. Quite a bit of avocado. I liked the potatoes and beans, and the insides didn't feel too mushy texture-wise. Admittedly not the hugest quantity for a burrito of this price ($15 before tax/tip) but I appreciate that they have several vegetarian and vegan options on their menu. I also ordered the strawberry agua fresca - listed as agua de fresca on the menu and this is the only flavor available, for $6. It was pretty good, fruity and sweet but not overwhelmingly so. I tried some of the chips and salsa morita that a friend shared with me, and thought it was decent - they give a massive quantity of chips (it would be good for sharing with a group) which are crispy and lightly salted, and the salsa is tasty and very mild in spice level.

Given that background, what arrived at my door was honestly shocking. The burrito was cold, greasy, bizarrely thick and lumpy, and filled with some of the lowest-quality meat I've ever been served by a restaurant. Multiple bites literally had to be spit out. On top of that, the advertised ingredients (sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole) were completely missing. What arrived was basically a dense tube of cheap rice and rubbery meat. At first I assumed this must have been a one-off disaster. Then I started reading the Yelp reviews. And suddenly a pattern emerged: stale chips, stale tacos, food making people sick, delivery orders arriving wrong or poorly made, hostile service interactions, customers being spoken to aggressively, and an overall sense that quality control has completely collapsed. One reviewer even described an employee asking if they "wanted to fight." Another described disputing charges over incorrect orders because the food quality was so poor. What makes this especially disappointing is that the restaurant presents itself as a serious modern Bay Area Mexican concept tied to an admired culinary name. Instead, the actual execution feels careless, inconsistent, and deeply below the standards the restaurant markets itself on. Restaurants can survive a bad night. What they cannot survive is the perception that nobody cares anymore. Right now, that is exactly the impression Todos Cantina gives off. Frankly, this is an embarrassment to the legacy and reputation associated with the Martinez name. I truly hope someone steps in and turns this place around, because based on my experience (and many others here) things have gone badly off the rails.
