Their $6 tacos with Niman Ranch meats are like baby burrito sized: - Al pastor - perfectly cooked tender beef - carnitas - loaded up with meat and beans Hearty, not overly seasoned, lots of quality protein and they will sub out flour for corn tortillas on DD orders. The salsas are great, guac could use a bit more oomph and the chips are a bit thick for my taste. Overall - would order again. Felt healthy-ish for a restaurant meal. read more

La Calaca Loca has one of the best pollo quesadillas!! I was hungry after spending 2.5 hrs at the dmv and met my mom at La Calaca Loca for lunch after as it is a short drive from the DMV. I hadn't been in many years but it was just as good as I remembered. I got the shrimp burrito and the guava agua fresca. The tortilla was toasted and I loved addition of mango salsa, both of which made LCL's version different than burritos I've had elsewhere. The agua fresca couldn't have been more refreshing on a hot day and wasn't overly sweet. Service was friendly. Love the decorations. Easy to pay with cash or card. Would come back if in the area and would love to try their chilaquiles off the breakfast menu! read more

La Calaca Loca - Shrimp Burrito, guava agua fresca, & my mom's Ensalada in the background - Mexican Near Me - Oakland, California

Yum found my new spot (new to the east bay). We ordered chicken nachos (addicting) and an al pastor burrito. It was huge and delicious. We have a burrito rating spreadsheet on the job site and this ran through the top three read more

It's that time of year. The time when one must start doing more than just checking in and posting photos and lurking Talk and meaning to write reviews bc if one keeps this up it will be Christmas and that shiny Elite badge will have retreated to an unreachable place. There are no shortage of places I've been meaning to share. So I shall begin here. First, I had no idea these guys were related to Nick's. None. Second, I only started visiting here after Pico Paco left. I loved Pico Paco and it was but a block away and the mom and pop that ran it were swell so me being a creature of habits never ventured further. Then Pico Paco closed and I was all what now. Off here I went. And. If Pico Paco were still around I'd have to have more than one burrito a week and I would become a snowman bc La Calaca Loca so delicious that I'd have to go to both. But now I don't. All I've had are their burritos and sometimes a nacho. The burritos are super good and super generous with the fillings. What makes this always worth the visit, over and above the yummy vittles, are the folks feeding you and the folks taking care of business at the register. They can turn even the hardest frown upside down. Gracious, welcoming, pretty. Senor Guapo is outnumbered most of the time but he doesn't seem to mind. If you're over Temescal way give them a visit. read more

La Calaca Loca - Mexican Near Me - Oakland, California

Showed up after a long dmv wait. The tacos here are a bit big. Carnitas tacos don't usually come with beans and pico de gallo but their taco placero interpretation of it was quite good. Service was friendly, rock in Spanish by mana was playing in the background. A bit of boxes hanging by the back door but it didn't take much space. Minimal things to improve but the place was quite nice!!! Recommend to visit !!!!!! 4.8/5 read more

La Calaca Loca - Carnitas Taco - Mexican Near Me - Oakland, California

I ordered two shrimp tacos and I honestly wish I hadn't. The shrimp was completely overcooked -- dry, rubbery, and lacking any real flavor. On top of that, the tortillas were soggy and falling apart before I could even pick them up. For something as simple as shrimp tacos, this was really disappointing. Texture and freshness are key, and unfortunately this missed the mark on both. Definitely the worst tacos I've had in a long time. I won't be coming back. read more

I had a great experience. Planning a large event, I purchased many tacos. The food was carefully packed in containers to keep them warm or to warm up. A more than adequate amount of green and red salsa in individual containers were included. My guests raved about the tasty food and took home the few leftovers. I like eating at the restaurant and recommend it highly for takeout or even large gatherings such as mine. read more

The food is authentic, and the service efficient and friendly. This place has been my down home go-to for simple straightforward tacos (my fast food). Recently have been branching out and their seafood salad and enchiladas are top notch as well. Highly recommend. read more

The best shrimp tacos I've ever had! Crispy shrimp tacos with guacamole and mango salsa. The flavors are incredible and the taco is the size of a small sandwich. You only need two. Friendly service and cute decor. It might make sense to eat there because the taco is juicy and the salsa will seep through the bag. read more

We had this restaurant cater a party for 50 or so people last night -- and it absolutely exceeded all expectations. The chafing dishes were set up beautifully, food was refilled promptly throughout the event, and everything tasted amazing. Service was seamless and attentive (special shout-out to Kevin for overseeing every detail). Several guests commented how great the food was -- from start to finish, it was a flawless catering experience. Highly recommend for anyone looking for quality, reliable catering. read more

I wanted to like this place. I'd seen it on Check Please and I was excited to try the food here. The pluses: the people were very nice. The ambiance is pretty cool with a Dia de Los Muertos vibe. Parking was easy. The chips were very good and they brought 3 different salsas to the table. Problems: the food was bland. No salt or pepper. No garlic or smokiness. The fish taco had little flavor and the second tortilla was unnecessary. Elote had way too much mayonnaise. The rice and pinto beans were also flavorless. Sorry, but in a town where you can throw a rock and hit an authentic Mexican taqueria, I can't eat here again. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant regularly for quite a few years. The food is prepared with the freshest ingredients. Service is prompt. Oof. Had the torta here before and it was good. Got the burrito, and it was disappointing. No flavor, store-bought salsa. Very disappointing. Great service! Ambiance is chill. read more

Wow. Got takeout from here, and it really wasn't good. Like, I would have been so much happier if I'd nuked Amy's frozen burritos. Which is what I had to do for my kid, who had one bite of her taco and wasn't having it. My husband and I ate a few more bites of ours, except for the salad. Which had cold, shredded chicken in sauce on it and was in a puddle of water. Ick. $$ out of my pocket and into the compost. read more

$18 for a veggie burrito is crazy! It's not a bad burrito, but not the best. Definitely not worth $18 without tip.

It's always a great meal here! There are excellent portions and great flavors. Overall a must-visit.

Boyfriend brought me here cause we wanted Mexican and were in the area. He claimed they were good but I didn't see it. I'm sorry. Food was bland. They do whole beans which I'm not a fan of. La Calaca is a great taqueria tucked away in the Temescal neighborhood. They have a colorful dining space to seat about 20 - 30 people and their food is delicious! LaCalaca catered for a teacher training at work and they did a beautiful job! The food was delicious and there was plenty of it for a great price. We ordered their taco bar with two different meat choices, rice, beans, salsa, chips and all the fixings! Kevin was wonderful to work with. It was so good, I have stopped in for lunch several times. The ambience is there but the food leaves much to be desired. Very little authenticity here. While I don't mind a good Americanized Mexican meal once every blue moon, La Colaca Loca was underwhelming and overpriced for what they're offering. I've actually been here about 3 times over the years. I feel like I forget how underwhelming it is every time, so I decide to give them another try. Welp, this last visit was just as disappointing as the others. Their restaurant is located in a tiny strip mall off of Telegraph. As you can imagine, parking can be a pain and it's also pretty tight. From the outside, this place looks like a hole in the wall. However, one thing that I can say is that it's super festive and inviting inside. The interior is just as lovely as the service. The people working here were super attentive and cordial. But unfortunately, that's really all that this place has going for themselves in my opinion. I dropped by for lunch during the work week and decided to try their cheese enchiladas plate after perusing their menu. They don't really have a lunch menu, but they do have specials and specialty plates. Now mind you, this plate was about $15. If the food had actually tasted authentic and the enchiladas were filled with meat, it wouldn't really be a huge deal. But when I can get a plate like this for $10 that has much better quality and that actually comes with chips and salsa, then we kinda sorta have a lil' problem. First off, they use pinto beans instead of refried beans. I don't mind pinto beans, but these tasted like they came from a can. The rice was pretty flavorless. They loaded the enchiladas with hella cheese, but ironically it still tasted pretty bland. Also, there was so much cheese on top that I couldn't even taste the red sauce. What I also found odd is that provided tons of different salsas to use, but no complimentary chips. Chips and salsa costs $6+ here. Now, what in the hell am I going to do with 17 different salsas and no chips?! I can only put so much on the enchilada, and it's a cheese enchilada so... yeah, ain't gonna work. I learned later on that this is the sister restaurant of Nick's Crispy Tacos in SF. Not a fan of that place either, so it makes sense. Anyways, I'm glad that I gave them another try. It really just confirmed that this place isn't worth coming back for. read more

East bay burrito review #18 First bite - 5/7 Beans -3/7 Meat - 5/7 Rice 3/7 Tortilla 6/7 Guacamole 5/7 Salsa 4/7 Cheese 3/7 Overall 4/7 I really wish they had refried beans as an option. It's the burrito base! My other two quips were the pico was fresh and tasty, but made the thing a bit soggy. The cheese was a little grainy. Other than that the flavor was good the freshness was enjoyable. Just would like to see some ingredient options. read more

Unfortunately my experience here was not good at all. I ordered a veggie burrito with sour cream. The people are lovely, the decor is lovely, however its not worth it. read more

Been coming here once in a while for years for adequete, if not particuarly good, food in a nice-enough space but really upset tonight because they gave us completely the wrong order for pickup -- with meats we can't eat and much cheaper items -- and when we realized it and called them they blew off the call, answering but saying that since they were closed they couldn't do anything. No offer of credit or reimbursement, pretending everybody had left already, etc. Bummer. read more

Super cute and truly true Mexican. It's easy to love a spot like this, with the simple most authentic food and drinks. I've been meaning to try this place. It's a little hidden but worth checking out. The chicken taco was really good. Shredded chicken that had been simmered in a seasoned broth with pinto beans and pico. The fish taco you can get grilled or fried and was also really good. The wet burrito we got with beef. It was just ok. The red sauce wasn't my favorite. Overall I will go again because the tacos were really good. They were also really fast. Came with some salsas but not chips. read more
