The BEST! I can remember when they would have lines outside, and around the corner. I've been living in NYC for 27 years, but when I visit the Bay Area, I MUST stop in and get my favorites. Been eating there since they opened. My daughter, who is almost 50 years old, still visits to, from Los Angeles. Will ALWAYS be a favorite! read more

Really enjoyed this place! One of my friends has been coming here for decades, and I'm glad I took his recommendation to try it out. Prices are good, about $10 via card for a Happy Burrito (shredded chicken, pinto beans). You pay at the street-facing counter, and take it to go. The hot sauce was awesome, and the chicken was super juicy and flavorful. Short wait time as well! I went around 12PM, and though there's a continuous stream of people, I was in and out in under 10min. read more

First time trying Happy Burrito! Always saw a line of people outside and decided to get a Super Burrito. MANNN I haven't had a good one in such a long time, that was so delicious. It hit my soul. Definitely going back there to try other things. I would show you a pic of the burrito but it was devoured. Try for yourself if you ever stop by. read more

Ordered their signature "Happy Burrito" (carne asada) resulting in an opposite feeling. Popular spot for lunch on certain days. Spent approx. $14 for the burrito that was the most bland Mexican food I've ever had. Their hot sauce was not balanced either. Also, their posted menu on the wall inside the establishment (that you cannot enter) is probably out of date. Their price point is the same, i.e. just as high, as neighboring lunch joints. There's a place right at the intersection with more flavorful burritos for $2 more. NOTE: If you're trying to pay with Apple Pay, they will need to take your phone from you to tap it on the payment machine inside. Easier if you have a physical credit card to hand to them. read more

Happy Burrito is a solid inexpensive lunch option downtown. The hot sauce is why people come here and the prices are very reasonable and always have been. I will usually order a baby burrito with grilled chicken and a side of hot sauce and chips. No frills, quick and tasty. read more

After trying different restaurants for a great burrito in my neighborhood; I drove the 8 miles to Happy Burrito. And now I'm Happy. I got the baby chile verde burrito with pinto beans and rice. In fact I bought THREE. It's the tortilla that makes Happy's the Best. It melts in your mouth. The owner and one employee were still there. There's no dine in now and you order at the door. I've been going to Happy since 1973. Then I could eat a Happy burrito which is at least three times the size of the baby. read more

Happy Burrito - Baby Chile verde burrito minus a bite, chips and hot sauc - Mexican Near Me - Oakland, California

Happy Burrito has been around for decades. They used to have another location on 14th street. But glad that this one is still around. The burritos used to be really cheap and a quick lunch option. Now a super burrito is &10.xx with tax. Not bad for a basic burrito, rice, beans, cheese and meat. The salsa is still great though. I always get it on the side. No indoor seating available. Only to go orders Street parking only The service is a no frills type of get an order in and pick up your food. Decent option for just some basic Mexican food. read more

Finally got to try this place after passing by so many times. I ordered the carne asada happy burrito w/ black beans w/ hot sauce on the side. The hot sauce was good, but the burrito was mushy all around. No contrast between fresh tomato and lettuce with the black beans and steak. It didn't feel up to par with other burrito spots in the area. The prices are good, and there's always a line so maybe it's someone's cup of tea but not mine. read more

Food is consistently delicious. Bay Area staple. Happy steak with black beans and hot sauce always hits. My daughter loves the veggie burrito. The hot sauce is amazing and I want to put it on everything. Plus the people here are super amazing read more

Been here 2-3 times and order the baby burrito with chicken add cheese everytime. It's a decent size to get me full for the afternoon. I recommend adding the spicy sauce when you order because the chicken is dry otherwise. There's no seating. You can order at the door or by phone. When you pick up they give you a number placard (what for? Usually there are like 3 people standing outside but anyway) and you wait for your number to be called. When you pay with card, they walk to the back to process it and come back. No signature needed. The order comes in a white plastic bag. Parking during lunch can be challenging but I noticed people make it work. I feel like service is hit or miss. If the food is good, Idc if you're more or less neutral toward customers. But I take it personally when I catch you rolling your eyes, shaking your head, or simply being cold when I am being genuinely respectful. It's just an attitude thing and I don't like to pay money to be disrespected. read more

A friend recommended this as it is a good value for the area. It is take out only and they do have lots of options to pick from. I had the beef happy nachos and it was ok flavor wise nothing too exciting. I do see quite a bit of people coming while waiting for my food. The wait was short and food came pretty fast. read more

Absolutely love Happy Burrito. The staff is always super friendly, they crank out incredible burritos hella fast. Never had to wait for more than a few minutes even if there was a line. Ordered the ground beef enchilada plate which comes with one enchilada, rice and beans. Total was $9.35. The good: Food was piping hot and freshly made. The mole sauce on the enchilada was delicious and the flavors came together really well on the plate. The not-so-good: The ground beef was OILY as heck. As soon as I cut the enchilada with my fork, oil came running out and it was a large pool of oil. I'll try the steak or chicken enchilada next time I go. read more

Over the past 4 years I've vouched for this restaurant even with their up and down reviews from others. Today will officially be the last time I spend money with this place. The one thing that kept me coming back was the prices. I knew I could get a good amount of food that was tasty for a pretty cheap price. Recently, they've gone up on everything (yes I do understand inflation is crazy these days) so that incentive is gone. The old women who work there have gradually gotten ruder and ruder as well (yes Julia and sisters, I'm talking about ALL of you). But after spending $23 on two super tacos for them to be super tiny and surrounded by chips and lettuce, and being denied a refund..they've lost a customer completely read more

Absolutely my favorite place for a burrito. I've been coming at least once a week since started working in Oakland in 1993! Love the baby so I'm not stuffed all day. And the hot sauce is incredible, nothing else like it! I no longer work downtown, so I'm always look for an excuse to go. My daughter is now obsessed as well, so we go every time she's home. Love the staff too! read more

Fast reliable and courteous service and a great deal for the burritos. This business has been around for a long time and they are family owned. We called to place our order at 5:15pm and got there at 5:30pm to pick up right at closing. We always order the chicken and steak burritos! read more

I always get salsa on the side( its spicy).I grew up on this place. One of the few places I can get a good breakfast burrito. Eggs are fluffy and not scrabled to hard.Always filling. I have never had a bad experience.over the 30+ years coming here. The ladies are nice. I do miss the black gentleman that used to take the orders, he was alittle old when I was younger. The only thing I wish they did was fresh cilantro and onion. Over all a great burrito spot. At the moment dine in isn't available. Only take out. They have a whole dining area . But covid shut that down. Hopefully the dining area will be open soon. This place has let me down three times on their inconsistent burritos! They are always loose & falling apart! Too many beans & less meat, tomatoes cut so big you can use it for a salad! Scared to put cheese, sour cream & guacamole in their "Happy Burrito"...Let me add that they Do Not know how to Roll a Burrito! This place was Happy in the late 80's & 90's. Happy Burrito - pretty much describes me in two words, hohoho. Although, I'm a little upset as I used to live 3 blocks from this place and never knew about it! I guess that's a sign of a true hole in the wall. So this might sound strange, but I feel like a test of a good Mexican restaurant is the rice & beans. And Happy Burrito's rice & beans are spot on! But there are many other things to love, including all-meat burritos; good char flavor on the carne asada; spicy brown salsa (albeit a tad salty); and a variety of non-standard quick service menu items including chimichangas, flautas, and enchiladas. While the burritos will be my go-to, I'm sure I'll try everything on the menu in due time. And why I'm so certain of this is that nearly everything on the menu is $8 or less, including the dinner plates. While the burritos are on the smaller side (which I kind of like, less risk of food coma), the prices are pretty unbelievable for the area and will definitely have me coming back for more read more

Well! Well!! Well!!! I would say this is the best burrito place I have ever had in my life. It's very small and humble location. I always compare other places with this burrito. The secret hot sauce is something which you should go for. I strongly recommend you to have their hot sauce on side. I feel it's the most authentic place in the Oakland or maybe the entire Bay Area. I believe that's the recipe of that old lady. Hope they pass on the legacy to someone. I don't know why but I have some strange emotional attachment to this place. read more

For years I've been coming to HB, I even have a previous review stating I love this place -- until today. I ordered a WET happy burrito - Carnitas w/black beans from an older gentleman taking orders. He then calls out what I ordered, but just not a WET burrito. I ask the gentleman if that was my order because I ordered a WET burrito. There was only one other customer, but I didn't want to assume. The gentleman then says oh you wanted wet, it's $2.75 more. I said not a problem and pull out my card which is all I had and originally paid with. The gentleman says, "oh card? It's a $5.00 minimum" I'm like, "wait, you want me to spend more money because you either didn't hear or understand my order?" HE SAID "YES!" WTF!!!???? Awesome customer service sir. Instead of chalking up the $2.75 which I'm pretty sure is very profitable just for the damn sauce you've lost a whole customer. read more

An old woman runs it she didn't hear me say I wanted a drink when she rang me up, when I didn't receive my drink I asked her where it was she said she didn't charge me for it, so I said well charge me then and she told me no because I have to spend a minimum of $5.00 again! So because of her mistake I don't get a drink and she was rude! Hadn't gone for burritos here in quite awhile but they haven't skipped a beat. Enjoyed tasting a memory I missed. Was in the area and thought let's go to Happy. Didn't disappoint. Made me smile read more

One thing about Happy Burrito is they give you what seems like a home cooked burrito, meats have flavor and always fresh ingredients with no shortcuts, so everything's fresh, my only gripe is they don't have pico de gallo and you have to pay extra for chips but to be fair the burritos are probably the best priced in the area. They service their customers through metal tables and it's really just a quick bite so no big deal. The Ambiance is a moms and pops and probably is underrated. If your looking for a consistent burrito with fresh ingredients this is for you. read more

Nomz! My go to spot when I'm craving a burrito- it's affordable, (sorta) quick, and delicious! I've gone twice now. Yes, the interior is definitely unassuming, but the food more than makes up for it! I've had their happy chicken burrito and carne asada super burrito, and they are both SO tasty! So good, I think I might frequent this as long as I'm craving some tasty Mexican food for a good price! The hot sauce is also so yummy- it reminds me of hot cheetos when paired with tortilla chips. They're free with an order (but 35 cents extra for an extra cup). Definitely will be back for some under $7 burritos- so fulfilling! I wonder if they cater too? read more

Filthy environment, mediocre food, terrible service. Went to try the enchilada dinner plate, it's a mini corn tortilla with a half palm-full of cheese and an ice cream scoop of dry rice and watered down beans, all for the ridiculous price of $8.50 plus tax. The owner seemed very proud of gouging people and increasing prices and was very adamant that you only get the 1 "enchilada" for that huge price. The entire plate of food could fit in the palm of your hand. Stay away unless you like throwing money away to greedy people with no standards. read more

I have a customer for over 20 years with Happy burrito. I have been very pleased with their food that many years that I no longer live in the area periodically every year drive to get a burrito from there. I will have no other burrito, but Happy burrito they're prepared nicely. There's enough filling in the burritos they taste authentic to me. I would recommend this happy burrito. The only problem is they don't have their café open. They take orders from the door over the phone so you just lineup to get your order that way and that's OK because some people still are in the Covid way and doesn't bother me and apparently it doesn't bother a lot of people in the city, but Happy burrito has been there a while and they still are great. as well as the prices are excellent for what they're serving. The building again you're not allowed in the building but it looks the way I did when I worked over that way 20 something years ago so you're outside the building and you're waiting on your food to be prepared when you place your order or if you called it in you pick it up they passed the order directly to you in the inside that I can see. It still looks the same. They still have their assembly line when they prepare their burritos lined up with the cash register all their drinks are in the refrigerator. It's clean. read more

We stopped by Happy Burrito on Saturday Afternoon as we've passed by it many times and seen people eat there. Dear Happy, Let's be frank. You are not the place to go if one wants a gourmet burrito. In fact you are not even a place to go if someone wants super authentic burrito, nor a flavorful, nor fancy, nor street-cred burrito. So why the high star reviews? Your burritos are simple, solid and the price is right. Whenever people want a solid lunch and not break the bank, you are a great choice. The Happy burrito got everything you need to be happy. I've tried the Steak, the Carnitas - all pretty good. But let's be frank, it's the incredible, oh-man-that's-how-it-used-to-be pricing that makes everything somehow taste better. I know this as the line out the door testifies to it. There are business men from nearby corporations, there are construction workers, there are policemen, there are workers from other restaurants. There is always a need for a simple, reasonably priced burrito that can fill you up and satisfy you. And that's you Happy Burrito. Keep up the quality. Keep the prices down. And I am sure you will keep being successful. I wish you wouldn't be stingy on the salsa though... :P Until next time, and that will be soon. read more
