Excellent chicken burrito with black beans and rice was very filling. The side of guacamole and salad was very generous. Food was extremely good. Looking forward to trying more options. Will definitely visit again. Blue menu is the most current in the photos. Some menus seem super old. read more

Such a warm and charming place! Ducked in here after wandering randomly through Poughkeepsie for several hours after giving an academic presentation at nearby Marris College. Had 3 chicken street tacos - utterly delicious and surprisingly filling! Also deliciously cheap when you're used to spending time in big cities, where they don't hesitate to charge $5 for a taco. Also loved the neighborhood and family atmosphere. Felt like the back room of a bodega or something, in the best possible. Highly, highly recommend if you're ever in Poughkeepsie! read more

Hole-in-the-wall kinda home cooking restaurant on Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Has very limited seating. Ordered a chicken burrito and a steak burrito for takeaway. Food was fresh-cooked, took exactly 15 minutes, and most importantly, absolutely delicious and in incredibly generous portions. Stumbled into this place for Lunch today as I was looking for authentic street tacos. The Carne Asada tacos came out great and they only had Chicken Tamales even throw I wanted just cheese which were decent. Had to take stars off for street parking and had to pass thru the street gangsters to get inside, then food is prepared behind a closed kitchen so you couldn't see how clean it was. Loved the family style atmosphere and decorations seems to be straight from Mexico. I wish this place was open late night for after bar hoping food! read more

It's the kind of place the locals know; an unassuming place on the ground floor of an apartment building. Someone I know recommended it. If, I wanted authentic Mexican cuisine. They had a food stall at the La Guelaguetza festival on 8/6/17 in Poughkeepsie. The lines were enormous. Thinking my source was on to something; I went for a ride. No fancy decor, maybe 7-8 tables. That's where the comparison between better known Mexican restaurants in lower Dutchess county ends. There is an extensive menu with selections you won't find else where. Yes, there's your chicken in molè, tacos, and tamales. They have tlayudas, sopes, cemitas, choices of fillings you would be hard pressed to find anywhere. Something else you won't find in most Mexican restaurants - handmade tortillas from fresh nixtamal dough (see the picture of the kitchen) to order on an old fashioned tortilla press. No plastic bags of tortilla chips here. The flavor is so much better. The portions are pretty substantial and the prices are bad. While I was there several people came in to pick up orders phoned in earlier. The neighborhood isn't fancy but I didn't feel out of place. read more

The extensive menu offers the expected tacos, huaraches, etc as well as some regional specialties, like cemitas, the irresistable sandwiches from Puebla - I wonder if they serve them with pápalo [update: yes]? I didn't see tacos Árabes, another Pueblan specialty, on the menu, but you never know. They'll have to wait; I've been looking for tacos to compare with the best I've had in other cities since I arrived in Poughkeepsie, and I found them at Taco Gol. The al pastor's pretty good (you need a trompo for that necessary char), but the carnitas is excellent- lush and porky where other taquerias' offerings have been dry and bland. They were sold out of chorizo and cabeza, so I ordered a goat barbacoa to round it out; it's a sleeper - not too gamey and seasoned well. All are topped with onions and cilantro and come with red and green salsa. The green salsa's a cilantro bomb that can easily serve as a green chutney in any Indian restaurant. If it had less salt, I'd shoot it like fernet after three of those carnitas tacos. Finally, the tortillas are made to order from a big lump of masa by the nice abuela running the kitchen. I'm definitely going back to check out the rest of the menu, but it'll take a while to burn through it. The tacos are too good to pass up. Edit: So good, I went back for lunch and ordered the carne enchilada cemita, a glorious construct of egg, Oaxacan quesillo, avocado, bits of spicy, charred pork and the mysterious pápalo on the perfectly toasted sesame-seed roll that gives the sandwich its name. Deliriously good - pork fiends will house this thing. Everything I've tried has been made to order - even the tortilla chips were still shiny out of the fryer. The attention to quality and effort spent delivering it is obvious in the food. Made with love. Five stars! read more

I love this place! I grew up in Mexico and often miss the food. Taco Gol's is great: it's cheap, it's fast, the staff is nice, the portions are generous, and it's genuine, savory, wonderful food. This restaurant specializes in what is generally considered Oaxacan food, some of the best in Mexico, but it also has staples from other parts of Mexico. My vegetarian self and my meat-eating partner both enjoyed multiple meals here. The decor won't impress many people, unless you're a fan of soccer, in which case it's awesome (the walls have hand-painted logos of the staff's favorite teams). It's basic but serviceable, and the tables are clean. It's clear this place is family-run, local, and aims to please. I've taken people here and they've left happy and really full. I recommend the huitlacoche and the enchiladas. Try it out! This place deserves more business :) read more

Tortillas for tacos are pressed and cooked to order. Must try bistec (steak) tacos. Very fresh and the salsa verde is very hot but a just try. The neighborhood on main street can be a little sketchy at night, but the tacos are totally worth it read more
