It's undeniable that Taboo has lots of visual and aesthetic appeal. But peel back a couple layers of the onion and the view changes. Looks can be deceiving.
We arrived to find the entry drive blocked by two delivery vans offloading their goods. A valet escorted us around the trucks to the entry stairway. Okay, not a huge deal. We were greeted by a phalanx of hostesses, each wearing a clear face shield that covered only their mouths. While it was nice to see their faces and smiles, the lack of any kind of real covering over their mouth and nose was alarming. Worse than that, the rest of the staff were all wearing similar shields, and most were being worn incorrectly - if at all. Several staff members had no mask at all to be seen.
The music was cool and at a nice level when we were seated. Within fifteen minutes the volume went up to a level that made table conversation challenging. The violin act was a nice touch, and his rendition of Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig In The Sky" was exceptional.
Our group of four shared three appetizers, all of which were delicious. The kitchen staff was accommodating to one of the members of our party with a lactose intolerance, and our server was careful to point out which menu items were "off limits."
As we wanted to start our evening with a bottle of wine, we asked for the wine list. We were told that the list was being redone and therefore not available to look at, but the manager would come over and explain our options. Fifteen minutes later, the manager showed up with two different bottles of wine and said they were our only choices. What? He had the wine list in his hand and put it on the table but as one of our group was going to look at it, he picked it up again and took it away. Very strange. We had already received the cocktails we'd ordered, so we skipped the wine. Taboo lost out on a potential sale of one or more bottles of wine with the "missing wine list."
The food arrived haphazardly, with a couple dishes coming at one time, followed by a bit of a wait for the others. The branzino was well prepared and delicious; the salmon was undercooked but acceptable; the tenderloin filet was cooked correctly to order and tasted good; and the ribeye steak was again cooked correctly to order and tasty. Each dish came with either a vegetable or potato accompaniment.
Overall, the service was spotty, with the main issue being the lack of any proper face coverings on the entire staff as noted above. Personally, I would rule out a return visit based on this alone. Others may not feel as strongly about this point and your mileage may vary.
Taboo's face coverings may fulfill a requirement to have a covering of some sort but they're skirting the spirit of the mandate, for sure. The plastic face shields are little more than a germ ramp, which provide no barrier for aerosolized droplets. Maybe a trendy place is too cool to take their customers' health seriously, or perhaps the management thinks masks would harsh the vibe, but restaurant customers and staff deserve better these days.
Overall, it's a bit overhyped, a bit too loud, and quite expensive for what you get. Our group paid about $400 USD for four peoples drinks and dinner, with no dessert.
