Nice cute spot only problem is the plating with sea salt , all that salt ruined my dinner

I've been on this Earth for 29 years and I have never felt as out of place as I did at this place. First of all, as soon as we walked in- the hostess was already rude to us because we didn't have a reservation. Take the stick out of your butt, lady- some of us like to go on vacation and go with the flow! Second of all, after we had stated that we just would like to grab a drink and enjoy the beach side of the bar- they immediately started throwing numbers at us "$1000 minimum at the table, $1500 for a bottle, $2000 for a cabana". Like, seriously? We heard good things and liked the decor of this place but that price is NOT worth it. We were begrudgingly escorted to a table, where we decided we can grab a drink, enjoy the views, and leave afterwards. After ordering our drinks, (EXPENSIVE AS HECK), we were told about 30 minutes in to our visit that we must order food to be seated at a table. Umm, excuse me? We literally stated from the moment we walked in that we had already eaten and we were just coming to grab a drink. We decided that it truly wasn't even worth it to sip and enjoy a cocktail there so we chugged down our expensive as hell drinks (very pretty presentation though, lol) and walked down to the beach. There we are- enjoying the views, listening to the saxophone player play, and watching all the epic moves of drunk bimbos. When suddenly, a random security guard came up to a girlfriend of mine and said that we weren't allowed to be there and that we had to leave. They singled us out of allllll the other people that were in that place and I am one hundred percent sure it was because we were brown skinned. Things got realy tense after this because we didn't appreciate how this man approached our friend and we were forced to leave and escorted out by the same idiots that escorted us in. Do you guys really think that ya'll are hot stuff? You ain't sh*t. I hope the pandemic causes this tourist trap to go out of business. Wish I could get back the 50 minutes that I wasted there but oh well... lesson learned. read more

One word- Oscar. We felt like family here because of him. We returned 3 times in 3 days. He showed us amazing tequila and gave us incredible food recommendations that never steered us wrong. The sea breeze from the beach and incredible cuisine is the icing on top, but really being under Oscar's wing made our experience(S) here unforgettable! read more

Taboo lived up to its name. My girlfriend and I stumbled into this place randomly and proceeded to have the strangest but most fun experience we could have hoped for on our vacation in Tulum. People are saying the violinist was "too in your face"... maybe you should try vacationing in Alaska next time with the rest of the boomers. Taboo has a professional mixologist that will bring a little cart of ingredients to your table and make you drinks at your table.. I didn't know this was a thing but it was super cool. This is a beach club so it is perfectly understandable and acceptable that they have minimums per table. I'm from Miami, I'm used to this, it's normal. What is not normal or ok, is to LIE about the minimums and refuse to honor the prices agreed upon. That is theft and fraud. We were initially quoted $100 USD per person which we agreed to. Then they said that price was no longer available and we were quoted $175 USD per person which again we agreed to because they were offering a better table location. When our bill arrived, they charged us $600 USD per person as a minimum. The manager refused to waive the charge. Where do I begin?? Our overall experience was not well AT ALL. We came to this restaurant for our anniversary and our party was very disappointed. We had a party of six people and spent about 1,000 US dollars. First of all our order took about a hour to come. Once we received our food, one of our friends ordered a Greek salad and did not know it wouldn't incorporate any greens. We asked if we could take it back and replace for another. The waiter said no and that we could order another dish and we would be charged extra. We asked to speak to the manager. The manager was so rude. We tried to be accommodating and even suggested what if we order something of the same value. The manager still stated we would be charged TWICE, charged once for the salad and again for another order. He didn't try to accommodate us at all. He said,"This isn't America, sorry!" He then walked off. I couldn't believe his attitude, especially since we were spending so much money. Secondly, our service was also veryyyy slow. We ordered a $80 hookah because we wanted unlimited coals and sheesha. However, we asked the waitress FIVE times, not exaggerating, for a refill and didn't receive it until we finished all of our food. My party and myself ordered appetizers we never received and side dishes. NEVER again will I come to this establishment again. Such poor service ! BEWARE read more

Great place but those kids at the bathroom trying to sell you cocaine are obnoxious and ruined the nights

The food is decent but the prices are much too high. They tried to tell my friend he ordered a $200+ bottle of tequila when all he ordered was five shots of the tequila. They brought the bottle out and poured it in our mouths, the rest of us thinking he did buy the bottle. My friend then had to explain that he didn't order the bottle and the staff was very annoyed and didn't want to take it off the bill but they finally did. We then got our check and they charged us for a large bottle of champagne even though my friend had pointed to and ordered the smaller bottle (we weren't sure what they looked like so we drank the larger bottle thinking it was the smaller one we ordered). They refused to take off that bottle so we had to pay $400 for a bottle when we ordered a $200 bottle. We weren't going to leave a tip because they were so rude but it was already included in the bill. Awful experience. A bunch of scammers serving food. read more

Food mostly terrible, with a few bright spots of steak and seafood (octopus, king crab). Grotesquely oversized portions and outrageous prices contradict the "take only what you need" Tulum ethos and delve into the territory of vulgar mass consumption. Schizophrenic background music selection only makes things worse, and tracks are occasionally accompanied by a somewhat entertaining but in-your-face electro-violinist. With lots of other options on the strip, you could fare much better. read more

I knew it was gonna be some shit in the game from the beginning. When we first arrived Diana told us that they didn't have any seats available, I'm assuming it was the color of our skin (we're African American) and we looked better then they did. We literally walked back down the steps and booked one online. Once we came back Diana and Lily both looked stupid as fuck once we told them about the reservation. Lily said ok give me 10 minutes then Diana spoke to her in Spanish then all of a sudden they didn't have any more tables, we then asked for the manager, after the manager came now they had tables, I don't know if they're racist or what but it really did seem that way. Oh it gets worse. Once we sat down Moises our waiter was horrible. It took 30 minutes to get drinks I had to literally stop him and ask. I was pissed because 2 tables that sat down after us already had drinks and he was way more attentive to them than us. Then when he finally brought the drinks it was the wrong ones. And tried to convince us that they were the correct ones. So now I'm livid. At this point I don't want shit from these ppl. The waiter was so nervous because he knew they were fucking up. Now let's get to the food, overpriced ridiculousness. The pasta was overcooked. Now I'm not a chef but I do know pasta is to be cooked al dente. Absolutely delicious meal and amazing ambiance! The shrimp appetizer was incredible- biggest shrimp ive ever seen! And my husbands steak was one of the best ever. I was so full from all the apps so I didn't get to each much of my calamari risotto, but it was also very good. Another great app was the seafood croquettes, and our seafood pasta was amazing! I would definitely suggest not ordering a ton of apps because you won't have room for your dinner- all of the portions of every dish were HUGE. The person they have going around to collect payments want to force you to leave a huge tip. He got upset and wanted to argue and debate over how much tip to leave. Calculating pesos to usd even after I said I know how much it is. He wanted me to leave a nearly $20 tip for one persons meal. I told him what I wanted to leave and he said it wasn't enough. I told him well if you'd like for me to leave $0 if that's the case. He changed his mind but started speaking in Spanish to the server about the "small" tip. He wasted so much of my time after I kept saying I was ready to leave. I was not feeling well and wanted to get out of there quickly. He put me on hold, left the card machines on the table to dance and then came back. Don't come here unless you want want to leave a $20 tip for one $90 meal. The absolute worst service I have ever experienced in Mexico or in the US. We were referred by AMEX Platinum concierge who has never recommended a restaurant with this low of service. We arrived and they could not find my reservation. Luckily, I had email of the confirmed reservation from AMEX so they eventually gave us a table. It took over 45 minutes to receive our cocktails. An additional hour to receive our food. We ordered the steak that was inedible and burned to a crisp. We also ordered the cauliflower which they forgot. When we reminded them of the cauliflower it arrived freezing cold and raw with grill marks. I spoke with the manager on duty, named Oscar and told him of our terrible experience. He refused to Comp our steak and only offered to Comp the cauliflower and add dessert but at this point we had been there for 3 hours and couldn't stand it anymore. Very disappointed with the restaurant and quality of service. While the atmosphere and music were nice, I will never return. read more

Major disappointment in the service considering the pricing of food. Food and ambiance was fantastic though. Took a while to get a waiter to get menus, order food and over 30min just for water. Staff was more concerned with bringing sparklers and entertainment to large parties than attending to everyone equally. There was a group of girls nearby, who were seated before us, that did not receive their food until we were leaving, roughly 2 hrs later. I overheard them telling the waiter he forgot some of their food. I love fine dining and I travel often so service is very important especially when spending $200 or more on a meal for 2 people. A very beautiful spot to hear some good music and beautiful scenery. Waited in line for 25 minutes to check in, then waited another 15 to pay. Bad thing is, no one should be waiting in line if your paying over $500-1000 USD dollars for a reservation. More staff or a better system should be in place. read more

tl;dr -- I would never come back and I would advise anyone who wants a nice dining experience to go else where. ------ For context, our reservation was early evening and it wasn't in the middle of their rush / they weren't at capacity. Also, we went all out on drinks, appetizers and main course and knew it was going to be an expensive dining experience, which wasn't a factor. For our first course, one of the food runners dropped a piece of shrimp right into my lap, ruining my outfit. I understand accidents happen and I wasn't pissed at the food runner, but our table was disappointed with how management handled it. It took some time before management came by to check in but when he did stop by, he had asked how they could make it right and I asked if they could remove the appetizer or what they would be willing to do. He said he would go check and see what could be done but he never came back. Without us asking and after we had finished our first course the food runner came out with 2 pieces of shrimp. We assumed this was to make up for the fact that our first order, one of the three pieces landed in my lap. The manager never came back and we noticed at the end that the appetizer was still on our bill. Despite my clothes being ruined, management refused to remove the appetizer from our bill stating that they removed one order, which was the 1/3 shrimp appetizer that we never requested in the first place. When we finally got a hold of management and tried to rectify the issue regarding the charge, they instead tried to run my card and process our bill. The vibe of the restaurant was great and the food was good, but ultimately all of that was completely overshadowed by our poor customer service experience. read more

A group of 18 women visited Taboo Tulum last week to celebrate the impending nuptials of a friend. We had a substantial good and beverage credit so we placed our order and specifically asked to be notified when we exceeded our credit. We just wanted to make informed financial decisions for the group so there were no surprises. Later, we all began to leave. When 5 were left (they took a car, not the van), the staff, managers included, surrounded them! They said that we now OWED an additional $500!!!! for juice and garnish! Juice and garnish??? The "men" used physical intimidation techniques and surrounded 5 women to force payment that we were unaware of. It spoiled the experience for the bride to be...and let's not talk about the watered down drinks!! Just robbery in every sense. It was an absolutely horrible way to handle people and business. One word. RACIST. My friends and I took a last minute trip to Tulum this weekend and of course couldn't make reservations at many places. That was not an issue! We showed up to this establishment prepared to possibly be told no. When we approached the hostess stand we were told there were no available tables after asking to be seated in the restaurant for lunch. That was not an issue! We stepped back from the hostess stand trying to gather our thoughts about where else to try. While chatting about other options along the strip, the hostess went and asked the manager to tell us to leave. To her surprise, we understand Spanish so we overheard the entire conversation. We spoke with the manager and told him that we were offended. Additionally, while speaking with the manager 2 Caucasian women approached the hostess stand and asked for a table to eat. They immediately whipped out their iPads and were preparing to seat them when I interrupted and asked why were they being seated without a reservation. They had no explanation and told the women that they could not be seated without a reservation and proceeded to lie about the blatant racism. Might I add, this happened to us at another restaurant the previous night that is also managed by RosaNegra. Do NOT patronize this establishment. There is blatant racism going on here and I'm utterly confused as to how during this entire interaction almost 2 Caucasian groups were seated while my friends and I were told to leave. read more
