Probably the best meal I had the entire trip in Tulum. Regular US prices, so no surprise here it's geared towards tourists but the food and drinks were great. Wish mocktails weren't the same prices as liquor lol but the staff was great, cleared plates quickly, answered questions. It's kind of inside and outside at the same time. So the space feels rustic and chill.
Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and seated promptly. Served I think his name was Marvin ? Was super friendly and explained everything on the menu. One of the original greeters also followed up to ensure we understood the menu. Food was beyond delicious. So flavorful and fresh ingredients . Ambience is bohemian/surfer hip cool. Some dressed up next to a guy in flip flops! But it works . It rained on us and we were quickly relocated. They really know how to adapt with a smile. Worth the trip. Will gladly return
What an incredible dining experience! The ambiance is vibrant, the food is absolutely delicious, and the service is top-notch. The only downside? The seating, unfortunately, very uncomfortable and the one detail that kept the experience from being perfect. The menu is ever-evolving, which keeps things exciting. Here are a few standout dishes from our visit: 1. The octopus - hands down one of the best I've ever had. Perfectly crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, served with crispy potatoes. 2. The robalo (snook) - simply out of this world. 3. The tartar tostadas - unbelievably good, bursting with flavor. 4. The arrachera (grilled beef) - cooked directly over the fire. Absolutely AMAZING. Special shoutout to Matias from Argentina, our server very friendly, attentive, and his recommendations were spot-on. Truly exceptional service! I would love to return, but I really hope they consider upgrading the seating--comfort should match the excellence of the rest of the experience.
Pros: Food is flavorful and fresh! We had a the maya shrimp and smoked fish tostada for apps (good portions) and the oven roasted fish of the day which came with pickled veggies. Casual but fun ambiance, open kitchen with a fiery oven. Cons: Cocktails were watery and no flavor, and the wine list is limited (one option for white, red and rose). It felt like a scene (packed at the first 5:30/6pm seating, you need a res) and it felt like we were being rushed as all the food came quickly. You're sitting on a small picnic bench so it's not comfortable to stay long. It's also expensive for what it is, similar to NYC prices.
OK this part of Tulum has become a zoo, but Hartwood remains solidly a cook-by-the-fire-catch-of-the-day restaurant. As popular as ever and as unassuming as ever. Had the ceviche, the collar, the shrimp and the simple food, delicious sauces, and the flavors were all perfect. Ribs that have been cooking for 14+ hours were ridiculasly good, moist and falling of the bone tender. Wine list is tiny and during daylight the flies are a pain. All minor items to enjoy Hartwood.
We had a reservation, but there was still a wait for the table. Not a big deal, as they offer you drinks while you're waiting, except they brought me the wrong cocktail, which I didn't realize until after I had sipped it. I was halfway through before we saw a server again, so I didn't mention it. It was still tasty, but given how expensive the cocktails are I would've liked to have been given the correct one. As mentioned in other reviews, they read the A-frame menu to you, and the environment is very loud, so we missed the description of half of the options. We tried Googling them, but they only have one menu board, and they move it on to the next customer that is seated. We had a 9pm reservation, and by the time we were seated at 9:15 half of the menu was unavailable. I'm not an overly picky eater, but generally not a big fish or red meat fan, so my options were limited to the salads (jicama or beet). The three tables that were sat after us had already finished their meals before we received ours. The ceviche was presented beautifully, but had very little fish, was very spicy (even for MX standards, as they included full slices of chilis with seeds), and had no bread, chips or tortillas to eat out with. When I asked for some, they said they didn't have any, even though several of the other dishes came with tortillas. The price was reasonable for the area, I suppose, as everything is inflated in the hotel zone, but still shocking in comparison to other meals we had throughout the week. If you're a foodie that is going to eat anywhere in this club area of Tulum, this is the place to go. But if you're really a foodie, that's looking for a more comfortable, leisurely experience, don't go to the hotel zone at all. Given the price, I expected more attentive service. The whole experience felt like they were the hottest ticket in town, and they knew it, so didn't need to try. To be fair, if this had been the only restaurant we had gone to in the Yucatán, it probably would've been in our top few. But we had so many other amazing meals, with amazing service, that were much less expensive, that it makes it hard to justify this as being in the same category. Go to Jungle Jax instead!
This place came heavily recommended to try from several people. Overall, I enjoyed some dishes more than others. If you're looking for one of those quintessential vibey Tulum restaurants, this isn't it. The meal wasn't life changing, but I think the concept is unique - it's seafood forward and they change the menu EVERY DAY. Focus really seems to be on combining simple and fresh ingredients. Ambiance: as noted, this is not one of those instagram Tulum restaurants - no string lights, plants, wooden lanterns, etc. It's simplistic and casual. Restaurant is completely outdoors with no covering. Food: menu changes every day. Seafood forward. Dishes are meant to be shared. We ordered 5 dishes + 1 dessert for two people and it was a good amount. Won't go into each of the dishes since it changes, but our faves were the tuna tostada and the fish collar - delish!
This place has no refrigerator and no electric stove. They get fresh fish and seafood everyday. There is no electric stoves so everything is cooked under wood. What an excellent idea experience we had for our anniversary. It was delicious food with outstanding service. They also offered us shot of mezcal when they got to know it was our anniversary. It has chill vibes with outdoor seating.
We made an 8pm reservation and we were seated right away. Our server was very nice and explained the daily menu to us. We ordered 1 app and each had an entree. Everything was great and I would have to say Hartwood was one of the busiest restaurants in the area. Definitely recommend going if you are in the area
What an Awesome restaurant!!! We went there for my bday based on my son's recommendation. We made the reservation a few months ahead That's how determined we want to go there. The food was absolutely delicious!!! It's a fun place with great ambiance and music. The waiter was great, so much energy, and very helpful with explanations and food allergies. Everything we ordered was excellent. Too bad it's not close by to bring friends. If you are visiting Tulum, you've got to go there!!!

Where to start. If Our friends had not told us to try the beet, we most likely would have missed it. I have to tell you you have never tasted anything quite so delicious. So definitely the beet! We are sure tried the fish collar, which many people skip not realizing that this might be the most delicate and flavorful part of the fish. In fact I was tempted to just have two orders of this as my main dish. I had the Wildflower drink, which was light and delicate. We were able to come early at 6pm, only half an hour after they open, and by the time we left an hour later, to say they were full is an understatement. If you like to start the evening calm, as I do, I'd highly suggest coming early and then wandering the street. This also gives you a little time to talk to your wait staff. The server we had (I apologize, I have forgotten his name but I'll ask my husband and add it later) guided us through the menu and had excellent knowledge of each item. And, like everyone we've encountered here, was so gracious with his time and presence. I never feel rushed here as I do in some other tourist focused places. Gratuity is included, yet I'd say adding some is most deserved. read more

Excellent food, excellent experience. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, good music, and attentive staff. Menus are written on sandwich boards placed around the restaurant and the waiters come to your table and explain every menu item in detail. My waiter was very helpful with recommendations and answering any questions I had. I ordered the collar de pescado and the tostada de tartar for my apps, the fillete de robalo (sea bass) for a main, and the berenjena (roasted eggplant) for a side. The collar de pescado, the sea bass collar, was absolutely delicious. The fish was soft and tender, topped with a robust tomato based sauce. Super flavorful. 9/10. The tostada de tartar was also outstanding. The crisp tortilla paired perfectly with the soft fresh fish. The fish mixture was light, creamy, and a little spicy, topped with some greens for freshness and finished off with some lime juice for acidity and brightness. 10/10. The sea bass fillet was cooked perfectly, the fish was soft and juicy and had an incredible crispy skin that gave it a wonderful crunch. It was paired with a creamy sauce, spinach, and cauliflower. The different elements of the dish worked well together, with the vegetables cutting through the richness of the fish and the sauce adding flavor and a contrasting texture to the crispy fish skin. 9/10. The eggplant was good, however it was my least favorite dish. The eggplant was soft and flavorful on the inside, however the skin was a little bit tough. The mole it was paired with had a nice smoky flavor and I wish there had been more of it. 8/10. For dessert I got their only dessert, the honey cake. OH MY GOD THIS DESSERT WAS LIFE CHANGING. Probably one of if not the best dessert I've ever had. The cake was very dense, with the consistency of a blondie. The honey taste is subtle and there is also a slight smoky flavor that comes through from being cooked in their wood fire oven. The cake is topped with a chamomile whipped cream and salt. The whipped cream is so light and airy while still being incredibly creamy. The lightness of the whipped cream works perfectly with the richness of the cake. The salt on top really takes it up a notch. 11/10. My only complaints are that the wooden benches you sit on are very uncomfortable and it gets very smoky from the wood burning oven, and I was seated almost at the other end of the restaurant. It was also quite loud but the place is small and it was packed, nothing the restaurant can do about that. Prices are steep but well worth it in my opinion. read more
Five stars for Hartwood! Farm to table concept and the menu varies from time to time. We had the: * Grilled prawns with pineapple peanut sauce. Not typically liking pineapples on my dishes but this was just a great a mixture of flavors and it turned out amazing. The prawns were perfectly grilled. * grilled eggplant with mole sauce. Something as simple as an eggplant was turned into an amazing dish. Seasoned well and paired with mole sauce topped with garlic and herbs. Simple yet delish. * grilled beet. This was just okay for me. * sea bass main course- broiled and served with lentil paste with Turmeric and spices, on a bed of spinach and sauces. Not the best one I've had but still enjoyable. * smoked fish crostada- generous portion and not too smoky flavor for the fish. Mixed with green and a tangy sauce. This was good. * langostine- huge portion and served with grilled tropical fruits like watermelon. Grilled and broiled perfectly. * rib eye- dry rubbed, charred and grilled perfectly to medium. * gin mint- enjoyed this immensely. A special for that night. The other drinks with cucumber and pineapple was refreshing as well. Outdoor and casual vibe, our service was very friendly and amazing- Matti was our server for the night. Our plates and utensils were changed without asking which I appreciated. Food came out in a timely manner, although the the steak came out 5 minutes later than the rest of the dishes. Restroom is clean, public parking. And dishes are generous considering the price point. Would highly recommend! read more

Great experience and cool atmosphere with the open kitchen. Food was good- a stand out is the tostada tartar with snapper- a ton of flavor! The service was sub par for the price- we had to ask for drink refills, no new silverware or cleaning the table in between courses. We preferred Arca next door to Hartwood. read more

This place is legendary, celebrated my fathers birthday here with my fiancé and cousin, one of the best dinners and experiences en Tulum Period. No other place that beats the food. Amazing ambience, Amazing drinks Amazing, the service, the detail, everything cooked over wood, makes the food, so tasty. Highly recommend. This place is quite pricey, but worth the price. Thank you. The ambience is amazing... They don't use gas to cook straight fire and I believe the menu changes every day... It was a good time. They are very attentive, but the portions are small and the pricing is a little out-of-pocket. They wanted $85 for a ribeye steak lol we did order the pork ribs which were a little sweet. And the seafood was all good, but I just don't think it was worth how much we paid. read more
We had an absolutely amazing time at Hartwood. All the seafood was so fresh and service was top of the line. Remember to wear less clothing because the fire is so strong in the back. They place the seafood in full flames of fire and I couldn't believe my eyes but my taste buds were so happy each dish I ate was innovative and fresh. We asked the waiter what he preferred and we got gambas mayas (prawns), tostadas de tartar, collar de pescado, and the steak with yuca potato. The prawns here was absolutely flavorful and slightly spicy I really enjoyed these and maybe a little too much since it started our meal and I wish I ended on this note. If you love spicy tuna sushi rolls + ceviche I would say you'd definitely love the tartar tostadas because they're so flavorful and crispy. These two set us off on a high note and I would say the rest continued but these were still the highlights. The collar of fish came with a very light mandarin salad that tasted so good together and I felt like this was a lot lighter than it seemed but the collar is the most delicate so it makes sense. This one is not as filling so if you're hungry get something else. The steak with yuca potatoes actually filled us up immediately on the other hand and I think this one is a winner for people who want some meat for the night! I definitely still think their seafood is the highlight but the yuca was very good and steak was done to perfection. We ended off on their only dessert which is the honey pie and I loved the way this tasted. So rich in that honey flavor and the cream set it off so cold and delightful in the sweltering heat. For non sweet lovers you can definitely skip this but I appreciate they had something for a seafood restaurant! I will definitely go back in my next visit and this place is definitely one of the best places to eat in Tulum! Disclaimer- book a week in advance! It gets so packed! ALSO water here is $10 a pop so PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN WATER SOMEHOW! I cannot believe I paid 20 dollars for water. read more
Saw the raving reviews of Hartwood and decided to give it a try.. I was absolutely blown away by how incredible my experience was!! The seafood is grilled over the fire outdoors, and it is so fresh. For 2 people, we ordered the tostada de tartar, ceviche Yucatán, platillo de pulpo, sea bass filet, beets side and the honey pie for dessert. Everything was delicious but the standouts were the tostada de tartar and the platillo de pulpo. Amazing!! The honey cake was one of the best desserts I've ever had in my life! It had a graham cracker bottom and the middle tasted like sweet honey and whipped cream. Insanely tasty. The ambiance is simple, chill and it is outdoors. The service was excellent. I highly recommend for anyone visiting Tulum. read more

Super creative, dreamy dinner date spot in Tulum. Every time we walked past Hartwood it was always bumping and extremely busy so we gave it a shot! One of our most memorable meals in Tulum in both presentation and flavor. For appetizers we tried the pescado collar which was a sea bass fish collar. So tender the fish was falling apart so succulent with a fiery red sauce that was so complimentary and yummy. We also tried the tropical ceviche which in my opinion was a bit meh, the dish is served in a giant slightly hallowed out coconut for emphasis but I wouldn't say the ceviche was better or worse than any other we'd had in Tulum and it was way more expensive at $680 mxn. Get ceviche elsewhere and instead I would recommend the gambas maya (my friend was allergic to shrimp). For mains, we got the steak medium rare and sea bass fish filet- and both were heavenly and to die for, cooked absolutely perfectly. The steak was juicy and succulent and came with a potato like side made of yuca. The fish had a really flavorful salad and accompanying red garnish that added a second dimension of flavor. Both mains so good! We also got glasses of wine but we were disappointed when they didn't even come in stemmed glasses just little sippy kiddy cups. Definitely for an $18 glass of wine I've had way better! Definitely will be recommending Hartwood to everyone I know and would be excited to return on another tulum trip! Service was excellent the waitress was really patient with us helping us understand the menu. Total bill was $109 pp for two glasses of wine, two appetizers and two mains! read more

Great restaurant with awesome fish dishes local to the Gulf of Mexico. Menu items were creative and very fresh. Would love to give this place a 5 star review, but ultimately did not quite live up to the hype. The pulpo was a little overcooked( one part was completely burnt to crisp) and the snapper was very salty. Coctails we're kind of weak and not great tasting. I had the Diablo and there were a lot of sandy bits at the bottom and lacked booziness. Based on American standards, food was good, but not amazing and may not be worth a long wait depending on how busy it is when you are there. read more

This place topped our list for the best dinner. I had a Mezcalita which was great and the entrées stole the show. Pesca Del Dia (catch of the day) which was Hoki fish on that day. It was stuffed with basil and Mexican pepper leaves. That gave it a nice peppery and lime taste. Overall it was done exceptionally well. Pargo en Mariposa (Red Snapper) - it was marinated perfectly and grilled on fire with perfection. The main dishes just focused on the fish and didn't care much about the sides. We didn't mind much as the star of the show was excellent. Definitely the best dinner experience in town and we would gladly make a reservation the next time we are in Tulum. read more
Great food. Creative, beautifully present and delicious Trifecta in food. The vibe is lively and energetic. The staff were very attentive, checking in with you regularly and keeping our table clean, super friendly too. Outdoor restaurant painted natural materials in bright white make for a super cool setting. You will be sitting in benches and walking on gravel so heels were a bad choice for me. Yupp there is a reason this place is highly recommended. Great ambiance candlelit, dark and cozy. Drink was the spicy margherita - best drink I had during my stay in tulum. Food -portions are huge. We got the kale salad it was amazing, crunchy. The empanadas were okay. Entre octopus - huge portion. They practically give you the entire octopus. We tried two of the other dishes. Portions are huge. Everything fire grilled. Very nice experience. read more

Overall it's a really great concept and the outdoor kitchen looks really good. From a food execution perspective we were a little less impressed. They have a simple menu which I find a plus. We had three dishes for two of us and we're adequately full. We started with the fish collar which was actually the best dish of the night. It was a sea bass collar and nice and tender. For main we had the octopus and the fish of the day. The octopus we were very excited for but it came out uneven. It's a hard dish to get right and for the most part it was too tough and chewy. The fish of the day was fine, a bit over seasoned. We wanted to love it but felt a little lacking. read more

Service was 10/10 from the second we stepped in. We got seated immediately at the timing of our reservation. Ivan served us and educated us on the detailed unique menu. He did an excellent job and unlike other places not up selling but actually preference on taste and the dish itself. Excellent service, our waters were refilled constantly. They check in on us throughout the night. Cassandra and Ivan both were excellent. They tag teamed and were attentive to our needs. Very impressed. This is a true cuisine and a true foodie experience. Having dined at other Michelin star restaurants this is on par to that quality. The flavors, the freshness of the ingredients, the depth of the food was 10/10. Highly recommended specially the seafood. Finally the ambiance; it gave a hole in the wall spot but with so much class; the music was on point and crystal clear it came from every angle and felt like there was live music playing. They don't have any fridges; everything is freshly caught in the morning and kept on a bed of ice until the end of the day. The place is powered by solar panels and they use almost no electricity besides some dim lighting. There are no gas stoves; it's cooked a natural fire pit oven over a wood fire. What an amazing dining experience. Highly recommend and I was left in awe. Will return anytime I'm in Tulum. read more

I had the best beet in the world here. I'm not even vegetarian. My friends and I all shared the food and it was amazing. The service was so good and so prompt. The only thing is I wish we could read the sign better from where we were sitting. read more

Believe the hype. This place is legit. Make a Resy early (you can up to a month before). Everything on the menu is amazing and comes out of that beautiful open food fire kitchen they have. Staff were incredibly polite and friendly to us (I did not get any of the tude I noticed at Arca). The Mayan prawns dish is amazing, sitting on top of some spicy kimchi and floating on a sweet sauce it was just beautifully cooked and presented and is hands down must order. The Tartare was delicious and ate a bit more heavier than the very light and refreshing ceviche but was a nice contrast of dishes. The Fish collar is amazing and is fall off the bone good (yes I know it's fish!). The octopus unfortunately ate a bit chewy and was not our favorite of the night. Drinks were creative and just a relaxed vibe overall. Would have totally eaten here twice during our trip if we didn't travel with a large group. Keep up the great work team!!! read more
Truly incredible -- one of the best meals we've had in the last year. We ordered way too much food, but our only regret is that we only came here once on our trip -- there was still so much more of the menu that we didn't get to order. We got the shrimp, ceviche de quelites, empanadas de lechon, fish collar, beets, eggplant, octopus, and pork ribs, then ended with two scoops of ice cream (corn and peanut). We loved every bite, and there's nothing we wouldn't gladly order again. If there's one particular thing I'll remember most, it's probably actually the eggplant, which sounds like a lame pick given all the other heavier dishes, but this was just so perfectly charred and the sauce underneath it was so amazing, I'll be dreaming of that dish until the next time we're in Tulum. (My wife agreed, but actually preferred the beet, which I loved to -- especially the charred stems -- but not to the same extent.) I'll also be dreaming of those pork ribs, which were probably the biggest surprise for me relative to the Yelp pics -- as soon as we saw this on other people's tables we knew we had to get it, and they were outstanding. But really every dish was just so spot on. The empanadas (with a mango sauce underneath, no less) were among the best I've ever eaten. It would be hard to make octopus much better. Same with the shrimp. (Although I thought the ones at Arca were at least comparable, but Arca is also amazing in general.) The fish collar looks like nothing special, but is so special. Needless to say, we will absolutely be back here next time we're in Tulum. read more
