Gorgeous 'manicured' digs in tulum. This place has some major burning man vibes and strong ties to the art community. (All great things!) I give it 3 stars - however - for the small-choke-worthy bones in our carnitas tacos. There were a few close calls. Additionally, our kind server brought us the wrong juices and didn't mention that the ones we ordered were 'out' . For the steep prices, guys, I expected more quality service and execution on those details. There is a stage overlooking the ocean and artists creating beautiful work while we were there for lunch. An excellent spot to chill and lay down by the beach. The bed was super comfortable with some shade included. There was a DJ playing some great chill music. There was an array of fresh juices. An experience in Tulum. Hard to get reservations, so the concierge at the hotel was able to get me in. High security, had to check in twice, once at the gate in the wall outside, then once in the outdoor lobby. Huge staff, mostly hot and tattooed model types but most spoke English. Not Tulum cheap, but San Francisco prices. Great food and service at start, but halfway through the set menu I thought I was placed on the pay-no-mind list. One of the waitresses assigned to me even apologized. It was a big party, so go if you don't care about prices and want to party with the local riccos. This is probably my favorite hotel on the strip. We ended going twice just to enjoy the views and the great food! You can rent a cabana at their beach club and they have a minimum fee you have to spend per person (I think). We just ended up going to the restaurant and eating and drinking with the view. It's a little pricey, but the tacos (flank steak and shrimp) are to die for. They also have complimentary chips and salsa! For drinks I recommend the mezcal margarita, or the mezcal flight (3 shots accompanied with orange slices). We ended up eating the same thing both times we went for lunch. The food was great here. This pace was beautiful full of art and aesthetics or good picture taking. The food was very sweet and fresh and full of flavors. The plates were not 100% local but it was definitely something you can enjoy. I love the music they play and the service provided was not best because I felt like I wasn't taken care of maybe cause I was by myself, but that should not matter. I tried to attend their parties, but a little too expensive and the lines is long and slow, maybe the season or maybe they need to have solo entries for people like me that don't have groups for a table. I probably could spend much more money there, but I was left out, just cause they don't have solo entries. And reservations are pretty bad too. read more

My friends and I visited Papaya Playa twice on our Tulum trip. The first night we went to the new moon party and upon entry, you must "turn in" your phone. The reason behind this is so you don't record the party so the hotel does not have a negative impact because of the pandemic... this was a big inconvenience as the property is pretty big and we were trying to meet up with some friends. The cover fee came with a consumption ticket which was not bad. You're able to get about 3 drinks and you will need to recharge your "bracelet" to consume more. The restaurant is very beautiful!! This restaurant has ocean-front views and the music was also great. The entrance of PPP makes you feel like you're in a cool jungle. We also visited PPP for Sunday lunch but we got there late. There was not much of a party atmosphere and it was more laidback. Like most restaurants in Tulum, there is a minimum consumption fee you need to meet to use the facility. read more

Getting there: Like I've said in all my other Tulum reviews, I just know that this restaurant is located on the same strip as all the boogie hotels and beach clubs. Experience: We came here for the moonlight party because it has been rated the #1 place to party all over the internet. Boy how disappointed we were. The vibes were very trance-rave music, which isn't a problem but it just wasn't the vibe we were looking for the night. There were multiple bars but both were super over crowded. They took our phones upon entry, but guests that were staying at the hotel were able to bring their phones into the club, so that was a little confusing. I think this place has a lot of potential, but like I said it just depends on the type of vibe you're going for. read more

The restaurant is part of a hotel, which has direct private access to the beach. To access the beach if you are not staying at the hotel, you must spend $50 MXN per person (bar or restaurant), which is very easy to do; the smoothies here cost $100 MXN each (and are delicious). There is a large parking lot near the main road for cars and bikes. There is seating at these amphitheater-style in-ground booths or on the deck, both with stunning views of the beach/water. Off to the side is a small dance floor with a DJ spinning chill beats at all hours of the day. It creates an incredibly relaxing vibe. I literally could've stayed at the booths for hours. The food menu is a little limited. It's not the best food I'd ever tasted, or the most authentically Mexican, but it made for a great, refreshing lunch. We each had a smoothie made of fruits+veggies, I had the tuna sandwich, medium rare, and my friend had shrimp tacos. I don't remember the name of my friend's smoothie, but it was green and had avocado in it; so good!! Both the sandwich and tacos were just a bit under-seasoned for my palate, but everything was fresh, so I can't complain. Service was decent, but I think our waiter was trying to trick us into paying cash by telling us the credit card machine wasn't working. When we told him we'd be ordering less if we paid with cash because we didn't have much, he went to "check on the machine." He returned and told us it was being worked on and would be fixed by the time we paid.... So unless he felt comfortable with risking us not being able to pay at the end of our meal if the machine wasn't fixed, I'd say he knew it was working just fine all along. All in all, PPP is a unique experience and absolutely worth a visit if you find yourself in Tulum. Enjoy! read more

Learned here that March is not one of many places to get into the ocean, very dangerous beach. I am in the wrong business because the prices are way too much...broke my piggy bank, now I don't have to buy food :( The thing is I don't see anyone writing a comment about that. This review is strictly for the restaurant and not the hotel. Hotel will be separate. I ordered the large size of the ribeye steak. Although it was cooked well and beautifully seared, there was too much fat. I would say 30% of what I got was fat. Fat is needed to help flavor the meat and maintain good temperature, but too much was distracting- especially paying per ounce. I still would order it again just for the steak portion. Absolutely horrible property and resort. They make the rules up as they go. Stayed on the resort for 4 night, Thursday to Tuesday. Saturday nights they have a party completely NOT covid safe by any means. If you are a paid customer coming to the property they will take your phone at the entrance and not allow you to get it back until you leave. They also make you pre pay for your drinks. If you don't drink all of your prepaid they keep it. Wash drink is $20 for watered down drinks. They Rob you for every dime you have to stay at this place. I highly recommend staying away from this fraud property. AC didn't work at all after I reported it 5 times. $200 Don Julio out of the mini bar. Manager is in incompetent and rude. Stay away from this property If you're looking for a good experience go somewhere else. read more

Located inside Papaya Playa hotel with a nice layout right on the beach. Beautiful view while dining with tables inside too if it is windy. There are a few different menus and they all have interesting options. I tried a salad one time that was super fancy and 3 burgers dish. It really has a presentation and there is a lot of flavor. However if you are craving a same old same style dish, might not be for you. The dishes are all pretty exotic /fancy. You will not find a pizza or traditional taco here (but there are fries yum!!) Yes it is a bit pricey. It is OK to speak up here. I have seen some people sit and wait to have a server greet them ,however it does get busy and sometimes they do not know if you are ordering food or have ordered at the bar so make sure to be OK making your presence known and express your needs clearly. I usually never leave reviews like this, but the staff and overall hospitality at papaya playa left me with no choice. I would never recommend someone stay here. With the prices we paid, we expected a 5 star hotel and restaurant. The rooms were unusable and the food was inedible. We have been to tulum many times and this was definitely the most overpriced and overhyped hotel. Also, it is clear papaya has a bad reputation in Tulum, but most of the online review don't reflect that, which lead us to believe that most of the positive reviews for this place are from bots. My friends paid extra for a room that was supposed to sleep 3 people, and they were given a room that 3 people could barely stand inside. The room had no light, no mirror, no mini fridge, and nowhere to put suitcases. We spoke to the front desk about it and they would barely even make eye contact with us let alone provide us with any assistance. Moreover, the food at the restaurant was inedible. We ate at the restaurant the last time we came to Tulum. It was bad then, but we thought it was a one time thing. After eating our first meal at our most recent stay, we realized the food was consistently bad. They really need a new chef. Once you try the food, nothing on the menu will seem appetizing. In addition to the bad rooms and even worse food, everything took triple the amount of time it should have taken. The check in and check out process took at least an hour each time. I can't explain to you enough how awful, incompetent, and rude the staff was at the hotel (except the security guards around the property were nice). At check out, we tried to explain all of our concerns and how they were ignored throughout our stay, but once again no one cared and would not even look at us. I am not leaving this message because I am bitter. I am writing this because the resort has potential to be amazing, but the hospitality is so bad that it ruins any of the benefits. I didn't stay here but visited their beach and restaurant a few times during our stay in Tulum. The best parts: - Amazing guac! - I love their stadium style restaurant seating... perfect for maximum ocean view enjoyment during your meal. - Really easy parking... they have a sizable parking area and let you park there even if you're not a guest. - Like many places in Tulum, really friendly and thorough service from the waitstaff. - The Wondermelon cocktail: a refreshing must-try with watermelon juice, mint, and gin. The not as great parts: We didn't really enjoy the octopus tacos or the burger that we ordered. (I know, I know, that's what I get for ordering a burger in Mexico like a silly gringo.) Next time I'd definitely just stick to drinks and that tasty guac as there's better food to be had in the area. This is one of many beautiful spots right on the beach in this stretch of hotels and it's a great choice for a casual hang. We didn't come at nighttime but when the sun sets they light their lovely lanterns and the whole place has a magical glow. Pay them a visit! read more

A day well spent. Mi amiga and I reserved a day bed on the beach a week in advance. The service was excellent. The minimum consumption and tip worked out to just under 65 USD - 95 USD. We ate and drank to our hearts content at the waters edge. Several different menues to choose from, we are fish all day. There is a wide variety of mescal, rum and beers. DJ played all day while the people rejoiced several feet apart. We were so glad we didn't get sucked into the tourist Instagram trap next door. read more

Mmm our gold! We liked this place due to the atmosphere more than the food and drink, but it wasn't bad! Our menu for two days: Vegandillas: yum! The first day I got this, it was great. Savory and delightful and only filled with mushrooms, but the second day, it was only alright. It was mixed with zucchini and mushrooms and not seasoned very well. Veggie burger: my friend liked it but it wasn't amazing. The cheese was sour and the "wheat patty" was watery in the middle which was odd. The bread was dry. Overall, B rating. Dirty martini: whoa, not very dirty and it just had vodka, no vermouth. Weird, but it was fine. Strong and good enough. Wonder melon drink: watermelon seeds and pulp in it made it difficult to drink. It was only ok. Refreshing but not my fave. Pina colada: I liked these but it's lighter and not smooth and thick like the friend is used to. It's good for the beach. This is my style haha. It wasn't too sweet either. Coconuts: not cold, not sweet, a little lime-y, but satisfying. Wish they cracked mine open to eat. Watermelon cocktail: another watermelon drink that wasn't the same as mine (friend got it) and it had too much watermelon pulp and seeds in it! Still good, though. Cucumber martini: whao bitter from something. Not the best martini, but it was strong and a few sips without food in my stomach all day made me a little loopsters. Juice/smoothie: I got something that was delicious which had strawberry and pineapple and other stuff. The friend got some concoction of watermelon and mango and it was like the cocktail and not like a juice at all! Such a bust, but it was drinkable. There was a DJ on Thursday and it felt like a little outdoor club. Saw some fun white people dance their little offbeat dance which was a show. Otherwise, you can lounge on their patio area and just enjoy the ocean breeze and view. We still called it a win! read more

I'm usually not one write reviews no matter the circumstances but I want to offer favor to any person considering spending well earned money at PPP. We came to the PPP bar & restaurant in 2018 for the first time and loved everything about it. The ambiance, the customer service, and especially the quality of the food. In 2021, I highly recommend that you do not waste your time or money coming here... We came on valentines night ($90 + 15% tip pp) we were seated on the rocky booths by the beach and we had two separate cockroaches events... cockroaches in the jungle may seem like a normal occurrence but unfortunately, these cockroaches climbed up my leg and onto my friends. With the first, there was disgust and panic but we're in the jungle so we let it slide. The second came out of nowhere and SAME THING, climbed up my leg and the staff's response was "we're at the beach, what did you expect?" I understand that we are at the beach, in the wild, but I would never expect the staff's response to be this. They should be aware they are one of the most popular hotels/restaurants in the world and they should live up to the expectations. The food and drinks on the pre-fixe menu was severely underwhelming, there was nothing noteworthy about our meal here. We would've eaten better at a corner restaurant at the Tulum Old Town. Honestly, it is not worth coming here whatsoever. read more

We ate here several times since we were staying at the resort. Taxi was a bit expensive from the main strip area and we didn't have that many pesos with us, so paying by card here was the easier option. They have fresh made juices all day and they were perfect. They aren't cheap - pretty much what you'd pay in the states. Breakfast was OK. Usually opted for the fruit platter with yogurt and granola. Nothing special, but hit the spot. Tried the chilaquiles as well, but too heavy for me. Dinner options were good the first night but when we tried other dishes on other nights, they were just ok. Very good seafood - shrimp and fish. The thai chicken dish they had was not very good and chicken was so dry and chewy. There was a small chicken pizzeta which was well priced and pretty filling. Came with shredded chicken and argula, balsamic and cheese on a flat bread. Alcoholic drinks were very watered down, so not worth it in my opinion. Overall decent for one meal, but if you can get food elsewhere... do it. read more

I came w a group of friends and it was almost $100pp. We'll, they told us it was $75pp minimum but the server miscalculated what we had left on the tab so we kept ordering thinking we still had a minimum to fulfill. Still we didn't order anything fancy.. like tacos and guac.. then lots and lots of alcohol to try to meet that minimum-- my advice, just order top shelf everything unless you can handle your booze then drink the day away. Really upsetting experience eating here. Management is cruel to the staff. Our waiter brought out the wrong tacos and looked absolutely devastated because it meant that he'd have to pay for them and the dish alone was clearly something he couldn't afford. This leads me to believe that they are way underpaid compared to the cost of what they are serving. I then went to the bathroom and could hear the manager yelling at our poor waiter who couldn't do anything about the situation. We ended up paying for the mixup which I was happy to do just so our waiter could make whatever his daily minimal salary must be. read more
