I enjoyed this! Their bread service was delightful, and we were here when they were all beautifully decorated for Christmas! We especially enjoyed the garlic shrimp, patatas bravas, and eggs.

A great traditional Spanish cruisine restaurant. After coming back from Barcelona in January, it brought me back. The flamenco show was very good. Make a later reservation to see it. Service was quick. Food is always excellent!

This was such a nice ambiance - we ate at 4 so it was quiet, and cozy yet classical. Tables were a generous distance apart which we appreciated. We had 2 tapas - patatas bravas and a manchego cheese with raspberry sauce. We also ordered a paella - all were good. Service was attentive.

Came in because our other options were closed for Holiday Hours!!! What a blessing!! Will greeted us and ask," Dinner or Happy Hour?" We replied, Both!!! "Vale!!!" Will say us in the corner where we had the great view of the old rustic style Taberna! Amazing Callos Madreños, Pulpo a la braza, broccolini a las brasas, y patatas bravas...( brava sauce ) on the side... super delighted and also excited to try their house bread- pasas, olivo, y blanco... what a blessing! Much cheaper to visit La Taberna del Alabardero and Chef Malo than to fly and visit Madrid! Venga!!! Highly recommend this beautiful place!

More like a 3.5 as the Fabada Asturiana carried the team with a 5/5. The good: they did a wonderful job making the place look and feel like a Spanish Tasca. The service was excellent with attentive and knowledgeable staff. The Fabada Asturiana, which was the soup of the day, was incredibly flavorful and loaded with chorizo and morcilla, I could've had a lot more of it! The bad: the tapas are based primarily around bread, the bread was stale! Came in a basket that was clearly sitting out, uncovered, one slice at a time. C'mon now, bare minimum is to have fresh bread, and don't skimp on it! We had a table full of tapas with 1/2 a slice of stale bread each... make it make sense. It was very pricey, but it was expected given the location. With quite a few other Spanish cuisine options in the area, I'm not expecting to come back.

We went to Taberna Del Alabardero when my parents were in town because my mom really wanted paella. The food was good, and the flamenco dancing was fun entertainment, but overall, I wasn't blown away by the experience. We had booked a reservation on Open Table, and I called to confirm the day before. When we arrived, the host was a bit flustered and couldn't find our reservation, and then he seemed to find it and led us to our table. We did have great seats! Basically right up close to the flamenco dancing! The service was okay. The server did her job but wasn't warm or adding anything to the experience. My biggest complaint is that it was so hot in the restaurant! I run cold and always bring a sweater, but I was sweating because there was no air flow at all in there. It was super uncomfortable and really took away from the experience. The flamenco music and dancing was awesome and definitely the highlight of the night! I loved the guitars. We had a great view of the show. The appetizers were all tasty! The food was very good. The paella was good but not the best I've had. We tried two different seafood paellas. I preferred the squid and octopus paella. The servings are very generous! Each portion is about $42. Overall, a mixed experience. I loved the decor of the restaurant and the flamenco. The food was good but not amazing. And I felt the service left something to be desired.

Delicious! I went on a Tuesday evening around 7pm. It was fairly empty. I was going to sit at the bar because I was on a time crunch but it was so lovely inside I got a table right away. Bread service was prompt and I tried the black olive bread that was tasty. The waiter suggested a wine (vina otano) based on my preference for medium bodied. It was divine!! I wanted the crusted baked fish but the waiter told me the wait time was 45 minutes. I ordered the grilled option and it took about 20 minutes. The vegetables and fish were cooked to perfection. I browsed the dessert menu but I didn't want to be late to my next destination so I skipped. I will be returning in the near future. Lastly, a 20% service fee is already included so pay attention to your receipt.

We tried to come for happy hour and didn't know this was a white table cloth establishment! I felt a bit underdressed and dissapointed that the happy hour menu was likely not served in the main dining room. Anyways, we decided to order from the regular menu. While the patatas bravas were fine, these are not a must order here. Do order the gambas al ajillo - perfectly cooked succulent shrimp with crispy garlic chips on top. Chef's kiss! The waitress recommended octopus dish and wow I'm glad she did. It was so tender and flavorful and the potatoes paired nicely with it. The flan was not my favorite (a bit too dense, not light enough). The complimentary butter cookies were very good - so maybe that'll be dessert next time

When we were in Spain last year, we loved having tapas. The small portions were perfect and allowed us to taste a variety of things without feeling like we just ate an entire chicken or a side of beef. Surprisingly, we haven't had tapas since we've been back in the States, even though there are tons of great options in NYC. When we found ourselves in DC, Yelp recommended this place and I read some reviews and immediately said "Sold!" and off we went. And it was delicious...everything was wonderful to me and they did a great job with pacing. We started with a tuna tartare over avocado appetizer which I loved. Then we started with tapas. They brought out 2 or 3 at a time so the table was never overcrowded and we got to enjoy each dish individually. I loved everything and standouts included the crabmeat fritters and the gildas. Garlic shrimp was amazing and the fried eggplant with honey was almost ethereal in its texture, like eating a crispy cloud topped with honey. The rustic bread was also wonderful. I had two rye old fashioneds which were not only expertly made but delivered in the blink of an eye. Very impressive. The atmosphere is warm and cozy and service it top-notch. I would definitely recommend.

Popped in while visiting DC and was seated right away. The restaurant is very cozy and cute with lots of Spanish-influenced art and decor. The service is upscale and the staff are professional and friendly. They were good at answering questions about the food items. We ordered tapas and the food did not disappoint! We ordered the fried eggplant with honey, the Serrano ham croquettes, and the tuna and potato salad. The wait staff brought us freshly baked bread and they offered a selection of olive bread, white bread, and wheat bread. The table has a small olive oil cruet. The eggplant was delicious! It was a bit different from the eggplant I had in Barcelona last spring. It was still yummy! The potato and tuna salad was amazing. It was fresh and had good chunks of tuna. It was delicious with some olive oil on top and the perfect accompaniment for the bread. The Serrano ham croquettes were delicious!! They were crunchy in the outside and smooth and creamy on the inside. The bread I had was the olive bread and it was so good. It was fresh, had a nice crust and was very soft and pillowy on the inside. Of course I dipped it in the olive oil on the table for extra yumminess. Our desert was delicate and light and packed with flavor! We ordered the lemon tartar with mango sorbet. It was refreshing and cleansed the palate, which was the perfect way to end our dinner! I definitely will come by again and try other items. I have my eye on the duck liver entree! Yum! Enjoy!

We stopped by Taberna del Alabardero to celebrate a low-key birthday. First, the service team was very top-notch and left us waiting for nothing. Actually, we had a very personal experience because we were two of 4-6 people in the restaurant. Since we arrived for an early lunch, I think the restaurant is a little more busy for dinner service. Also, the ambiance of the restaurant makes you feel like you stepped into a bar/restaurant in Madrid. For our dining pleasure, we had a nice spread of delicious bite, which included Croquetas de Boletus y Trufa, Gildas, Pulpo a La Gallega, Gambas Al, Ajillo, Tortilla de Patatas, Ensaladilla de Atún, Patatas Bravas, and Paella Mixta. While I do not remember how everything tasted, I definitely remember taking multiple bites from the various tapas. Yes, we had quite a bit of food for two people. All in all, if you want a pretty decent, low-key tasting Spain, this is your spot. There are other (perhaps more popular) Spanish restaurants in the area, but this one seems to be less busy so it might be easier to get a table here. I thought the prices of our tapas and main course were reasonable compared to other Spanish restaurants in the area.

I came here with a friend for a light dinner and was immediately stunned by the interior -- a beautiful blend of Victorian elegance. * CROQUETAS DE JAMÓN SERRANO: Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and uniquely shaped into cubes. Absolutely delicious! * CALAMARES A LA ANDALUZA CON ALIOLI DE AJETES: Perfectly fried calamari, incredibly crispy, and elevated by the flavorful scallion aioli -- an excellent pairing. * MEJILLONES CON SALSA MARISCADA: The mussels were fresh served in a bland broth. I've had better. Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience. The food and atmosphere, I'd happily recommend it and plan to return to explore more of the menu!

I swear I've reviewed la Taberna del Alabardero at least twice. Didn't your own review used to pop up first when you went to a restaurant's site on Yelp? Anyhow we had a fabulous meal with great service in a lovely atmosphere. And if you subtract the cost of drinks, it was very reasonable. See started with an appetizer of txiporones en su tinto con arroz. This was a larger than expected portion of small squids in their ink over the most luscious rice I've ever had anywhere. The main was dorada en sal -- a whole fish baked in salt. It was accompanied by roasted vegetables and a wonderful garlic sauce. Our waiter, Alvaro, broke the thick crust of salt, and very carefully filleted the fish. This dish was obviously meant to be shared. The fish was fabulous -- almost a religious experience. This was the best meal we have had anywhere -- since we were last in Spain. We've eaten at La Taberna maybe four times in the past two years. This was the first time we've tried txiporones or the fish baked in salt. Now I want to explore the whole menu. What a wonderful meal and wonderful evening. We'll be back.

Ask the Community - Taberna del Alabardero

This Saturday, will they have music playing during dinner (I hope so)?

    Yes they do

On which nights does flamenco happen?

Fridays and Saturdays starting around 8:00pm until 10:00pm. Call ahead to confirm and to reserve a table near the stage.

Does the Saturday buffet have a vegan option, how about gluten free ? Thanks.

    I don't believe so.

    Do you have parking?

Yes, it's across the street and you get validated for 2 hours. Be careful as there's 2 garages on Pennsylvania Ave (one way) by Taberna. The restaurant will be on the right, and the garage you want is on the left, directly across from the restaurant…

Nice place if you care mostly about atmosphere, but for me, it's not worth a second visit. Seating & Service: I reserved a high-top for two on a Sunday night, and luckily got seated at a private table rather than the communal table. It's unclear to me which reservations are for the communal table. The waitstaff were very polite and attentive. They also didn't rush us out and let us linger, which I appreciate (but this may be because there wasn't a reservation right after us). However, I do wish that they provided more detail about the menu and drinks without having to be prompted. We had to inquire about recommended dishes, suggested wine pairings, and portion sizes ourselves. Food: FYI, the dinner menu generally goes in order of size, with the smaller plates at the top and the larger plates towards the bottom. As expected, prices per dish also increase as you move down the menu. All the menus (including prices) change frequently so don't rely on the menus on the website to guide you. We ordered the Warm Manifest Bread ($9), Miso Caesar Salad ($19), Dry Aged Beef Tartare ($23), and the Escargot ($24) plus one cocktail ($18), a glass of wine ($16), and dessert ($15). For these prices and based on other reviews, I expected every bite to be fantastic, but the portions were very small and the quality and taste were average. The escargot was a little too salty for my taste and was strangely hidden under a puff pastry. I enjoyed the tartare the most, but it only came with three small pieces. I had high expectations, but sadly Maison fell short.

Firstly, I really have to commend the staff.  They were so attentive and thoughtful.  Our server, for example, brought an extra little light to our table when she saw we were struggling to read the menu in the low light. They were great about checking with us, keeping the water glasses filled and anticipating other needs such as a bag when we wanted to take some of our meal home.  Everyone was very kind and this added so much to our meal.  We enjoyed our progressive meal which reflecting the chef's heritage from both Italy and Brazil.  Our starting mocktails of the ploughman's surprise and the fermented peach soda were good.  The peach soda had a great amount of fizz but could have used a little more peach.  Maybe the nectar just sunk to the bottom and by the time we drank that far, the ice had diluted it.  We preferred the ploughman's surprise, which, coming with no ice (yah!) stayed flavorful to the very end.  Our app of grilled peaches and burrata was tasty but we actually preferred it eaten as its separate components rather than together where the burrata seemed to overpower the other flavors.  Special shout out to the sourdough crisp on top.  Super crunchy and delicious!  The bread was also a stand out in the panzanella.  This dish had a great kick from the jalapeno and was fresh and refreshing.  For our third dish - the bread also was really good.  This time it was garlic knots which everyone looked forward to the moment that garlic aroma arrived at our table.  The summer lasagna came with a very light and slightly sweet tomato sauce which only made us wish we had even more bread!  The main entrée was the picanha steak.  It was very well cooked and though not as hot temperature wise as we would have liked, it was really good even just warmed.  The oven roasted potatoes were just right and the chimichurri sauce was very good (anther longing for more bread - can you see a theme?...)  Dessert was a soft and custardy on the inside corn cake with  mascarpone and espresso dulce de leche.  Although I couldn't taste much of the coffee flavor, the dish was another example of Reveler's Hour comfort food wheelhouse.  The food and the service at Reveler's Hour are definitely worth coming back for.  Next time, we might try to sit towards the front where there is more light from the windows.  There is a small outdoor public lot a block away.

I enjoyed my drink and it was the perfect bar for catching up with a friend. I'll definitely think about trying the food next time however, like the drinks, it's very expensive for "bar food" and an automatic 20% fee is added to every check regardless of your party size. The music gets louder later into the night and the crowd seems to be more in the mood to dance so just keep that in mind when deciding on what time to go! Overall if you're in the area Le mont royal is worth stopping by.

I was very excited about the French-Canadian, always-changing menu. Physical Exam: Taste - The Prime Rib Sando was a preemo sandwich of balanced cheese and meat between two slices of toasty sourdough. The Cheeseburger Americain was a standard 3.5 out of 5 American cheeseburger that beats the average suburban chain restaurant burger with its double patty and sesame bun, but isn't gonna knock your socks off like a steakhouse burger. The poutine kept my socks on too (I was particularly excited about the poutine and ended up a tad underwhelmed). The biggest disappointment was the mozzarella sticks, which...... I'll just get to in the service part. Cocktails were mid. All interesting concepts, but most missed the mark. the Polar Express was a little too sweet, I forgot what the name of the riff on an old fashioned or Manhattan I had but that was okay, and the Fleur de Citron tasted like when you ask for a Sprite and they ask, "Is Sierra Mist (now Starry) okay?" and you reply, "yeah that's fine," but then what you get is actually a flat 7-Up. Ambiance - This place runs on vibes like America runs on Dunkin'. Live DJ, neon lights, feels like a place you wanna eat a little, dance a little, drink a little. Fun place. Tanked by the service. Skip to the Assessment/Plan if you don't want to read this novella retelling of our evening. Service - Relatively early for the dinner service, we were the largest and one of only a few tables in the restaurant. I counted 3 other tables seated (small parties of less than 4 each) and a few patrons at the bar. It took about 20 minutes before we first got our menus and the guy who handed them to us didn't say a word just dropped them off. Then it took another 20 minutes before he came back to get our drink orders, and 1) seemed like he was having a bad day, which... fine, but 2) was rolling his eyes when some of us were a little between some options and wanted a recommendation, which... alright my guy let's chill. We weren't talking loud, we weren't drinking before and being obnoxious, we just wanted to ask about what some of the drinks were like on a very cool menu of cocktails we haven't tried anywhere else. Upon returning with our drinks, he accidentally spilled a not insignificant amount on my friend sitting across from me, and while we reacted and started handing him extra napkins, he just glanced at him, finished giving out the drinks, and walked away. No "oops", "my bad", "oh let me get you some paper towels", nothing. So at this point, we're all staring at each other like "Did we do something? Do we smell?" Whatever, friend's birthday, we've been talking about this cabin weekend for several years and it's finally happening, let's just vibe. Now another 20 minutes went by and we were getting antsy because we wanted to order our food but it looked like there wasn't a lot of staff, and we didn't want to upset anyone by hurrying them. Another man came over who we thought was going to take our orders. Nope. He starts picking up our menus so I say, "Oh, hey we haven't ordered yet." To which he replies, "OK, but I need the menus." Alright cool, yeah, that makes sense if he needed them for other tables and can leave us with a few to share. Nope. He just took them and placed them back at the host stand. Awkward stares across the table again. Whatever, we had enough, I guess. Tick tock, tick tock. A third guy came over, and when he smiled and asked, "Hi are you all ready to order?" I was like "Oh finally a human being!" Food took another 20-ish minutes while we nursed our drinks and really had no interest in ordering another round (not that anyone asked us). We ate. We chatted. We had an okay time. We were super ready to get out of there. Oh right, the mozz sticks. Le Mont'zarella sticks. They had one order left of four sticks for $18. We were one of the first diners. You can imagine after all the above, that's just a major facepalm emoji. Assessment/Plan: Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for Le Mont Royal to improve their service, now and at the hour of ASAP, because the place has so much potential, and maybe it was just an off night, or the staff just finished arguing with each other in the back so they took it out on us, but dearly beloved Lord it was like we offended nine generations of their ancestry from the moment we walked in. With "a 22% service charge has been added for your convenience," I thought we were getting Punk'd. The always-changing French-Canadian menu is a cool and unique concept, but it's a lot of bark with very little bite. It didn't make the disappointing service worth it. Buzzy but not overly loud, with stylish decor that sets the perfect mood for a relaxing brunch with friends or family. To kick things off, I had a mimosa and an iced latte. For food, we ordered the Escargots à L'ail (first timer with this!!!) It was six escargots swimming in a flavorful garlic parsley butter, with flaky puff pastry rounds for dipping. I was definitely nervous, but the flavors were rich without being overpowering, and the pastry added just the right amount of flavor. For the table, we shared the Warm Pistachio Crusted Goat Cheese Ball served with honey and some decadent red wine caramelized onions. The combination of the creamy goat cheese, sweet honey, and savory onions was absolutely amazing. This was definitely a highlight and highly recommended for sharing.. One unique thing: they offer bottomless mimosas and bellinis for one hour. We don't see much of bottomless mimosas in VB, so I found this exciting. For my entree, I couldn't resist the B.E.C.C.: crispy bacon, creamy scrambled eggs (although I swapped in a fried egg), and gruyère cheese all piled on a freshly baked croissant, plus your choice of fresh fruit or Basque potatoes (the potatoes are great, by the way). It hit all the right spots. A buttery croissant, salty bacon, melty cheese, and the yolk from my fried egg just tied it all together. Service was top-notch: attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly without ever being intrusive. All around, this brunch was a winner! So glad we came here.

I found my food to be pretty good and my friends liked their orders. The wine selection is also very good. My order was pretty large though my friends' portions were smaller and I ended up being the only one eating as they finished and then the server grabbed their plates before I was finished. But what detracted overall from the experience was the ambience and service. Maybe because it was the weekend, but the restaurant is so loud you need to shout at each other. The cacophony of conversation, open kitchen, laughter, screeching and music just ruins it. The service is spotty. The gentleman bringing the food basically tosses it on the table and hopefully it slides to your place. Water is aggressively poured wherever the glass is even if they need to reach acrosss your face while you're speaking. Plus they grab your bread plate after appetizer even if there is bread on it and you want it. Apparently bread service is only for the first part of the meal. So food and drink was good, but overall experience was not. We decided we won't go back. BUT, it seems very popular so you will need to make that call. I suggest trying to get a table at the front of the restaurant.
