I can honestly say this is the worst Chinese food I've had a long time. Everything was super greasy and weakly flavored. The pork buns were bizarre; super thick dough and the meat inside was not proportionate to the wrapper. Boneless spare ribs were gristly. Finally the service was also mediocre, we were one of 3 tables in the restaurant and had to ask for things 2-3 times. Szechuan's Dumpling in Arlington, MA is a respected establishment in the heart of Arlington Heights, MA. The biggest challenge is parking which is all street parking available on busy Massachusetts Avenue. The dining area is small as most seem to use Szechuan's for takeout. For the big hockey game, we ordered traditional Chinese / Asian food for the boys. Pork Fried Rice, Vegetable Fried Rice, Vegetable Lo Mein, Chicken Fingers, Scallion Pancakes, Pan Fried Ravioli (dumplings) as an assortment of other Asian buns/Dumplings with pork, chicken, and venerable. The service was fast and efficient and prices as expected for the area. The only complaint is that crispy scallion pancakes just never travel well and the humidity from the stream ruins the crispiness. Would someone please invent a great was to limit the wilting? The food itself was warm, tasty and abundant. It certainly hit the spot while watching a Bruins victory in the Stanley Cup. There was also ample amounts leftover for the following day. Excellent food. While visiting Arlington Heights we were in the mood for Chinese food, I will confess, after living is Asia for many years, it's very difficult for me to eat at American Chinese food restaurants. However, when we found Szechuan's Dumpling and ordered the soup dumplings, one taste brought me back to my days in Shanghai. I ordered the food from Uber eats. And I threw up when finding the pig's nipple on the skin of the meat they served. I could barely eat in the rest of the day and went through severe diarrhea. It was horrible. What kind of restaurants would ever serve their customers pig's nipples??? So nasty. Also I'm deeply concerned with the restaurant's food security. I highly doubt that the food is contaminated. I have been to the restaurant once, and the service is not very good. I feel discriminated because I'm a woman throughout the dining, that's why I ordered on Uber eats this time. But it still disappoint me, tho in another way. Tasty takeout. The name is a little confusing and misleading, as I think that Szechuan food is not really their specialty. The Szechuan dishes we ordered tasted good, but were not prepared in the same way as in other traditional Szechuan restaurants (these dishes included the fish fillets in chili sauce and the cumin lamb). We also had the mushrooms with bok choi, a very tasty spicy noodle dish, and the shanghai style fried pork buns. When a highly esteemed and Elite yelper recommended this place to me it was immediately placed on my short list. I first learned to love xiao long bao in Shanghai where they originated and have been hooked ever since. Xiaolong is the name of the bamboo steaming basket they are traditionally cooked in. I've also enjoyed XLB in Chinatown, near Harvard Square and now here in Szechuan's Dumpling in Arlington. These XLB's (aka Pork Mini Juicy Buns) were delicious- smaller than some, but that made them easier to eat. A little less soup inside but they were made in a lighter wrapping which I prefer. I started with a savory hot and sour soup. Our main course was the not too adventurous Chicken with Garlic Sauce which included delicious sliced fresh white meat chicken with a variety of vegetables- mushrooms, celery, snow pea-pods, water chestnuts, carrots, and zucchini. The light garlic sauce was mildly spicy so as to not overpower the rest of the dish. Genuinely friendly service, lovely fresh food including my favorite XLB's- great meal. You sure you don't want something different?" And I would blurt out, "Oh don't forget a small bowl of white rice." Every. Single. Visit (for almost 3 years). Some of the better Szechuan cuisine in greater Boston. Mini juicy soup dumplings are actually silly full size, pliable dough wrappers filled with scoring hot pork broth and pork filling. Wonderful but be careful as you enjoy when the scorching liquid exits the dumpling. Also excellent are the hand made pork and leek dumplings, here order them fried. Szechuan style fish and Szechuan style pork each come laced with mounds of garlic and blindingly hot Szechuan peppers both dried and roasted, ginger along with heaping portions of either tender fish or unctuous pork. Rock out with a bowl of white rice to keep from sweating profusely although that will probably happen anyways. Fried rice with chinese sausage is fluffy and takes advantage of the tasty sausage mixed with egg, scallion and a light serving of soy sauce. Pork and snow cabbage noodle soup is a large portion meant to share with plentiful noodles and a rich broth. Service is polite and efficient. Lunch specials available as well. read more

This place reopened sometime in July 2021. Maybe it should have not. We have seen restaurants raise prices and add fees citing business pressure as a result of Covid. We all want them the restaurants to survive and succeed. This restaurant has decided to only slightly raise prices (think $1 or $2 per entree while app prices remain almost the same as before Covid). The issue is this: reducing serving size and removing ingredients is not and ok way to seem price competitive. Mini soup dumplings, 8 of them, can literally all fit in my palm! They shrunk by 50% at least. Wings: not fresh and tiny (returned due to rancid taste). Fried rice: barely any meat, no vegetables, a lot of egg! Lo Mien: no vegetables, just yellow noodles and fair amnt of babay shrimp. Entrees tasted decent but portion was small, again. I wish they'd re-evaluate their business plan and wish Szechuan Dumplings a good rebound. read more

I was flabbergasted seeing less than 4 stars avg. on this Yelp page! As the reviewer prior to me said, Szechuan's Dumpling is officially underrated. As a longtime on-and-off Arlington resident, I've seen this restaurant location change hands & names multiple times and this is by far the most popular *and* good quality that it's gotten in roughly 20 years. In the 'burbs it's one of the best Chinese restaurants you can find outside of Chinatown now. The service is good too despite being extremely busy in the evenings (that being one of several testaments to their quality). When ordering takeout, they take care to have your order correct and ready within a surprisingly short time frame. The maître d' who I usually see working is a middle-aged, studious and respectful fellow that I am always happy to see since he runs a smooth operation. I have also been pleased with the wait-in staff's manner and speed during even the busiest times, most recently on Mother's Day evening. Now for some standouts I've had from the menu: * Salt & Pepper Fish Filet - not sure what fish it is but it's always extremely fresh & delicious, my partner and I almost always order this because it's such a joy. Eat the peppers with the fish if you like it spicier. * Eggplant with Garlic Sauce - don't miss this succulent dish if you like eggplant, the flavor can almost knock you out it's so good. * Pork Mini Juicy Bun - their name for soup dumplings, be careful not to burn your mouth when enjoying this pleasant classic. (their other dumplings are also good) In my experience, those looking for more basic Americanized fare will also be pleased by Szechuan's Dumpling's fried rice, lo mein, general tsao's chicken, scallion pancakes (I like their doughy take more than some reviewers), and so on. Every single dish I've had both takeout and eat-in at this place has been a hit or close to it (both with me -- a white dude -- and a multitude of Asian Americans). I order Szechuan Dumpling last night and it was just okay. What I ordered: crab rangoon, vegetable dumpling, and salt & pepper shrimp. It felt like I didn't get a lot of shrimp for the price, but that wasn't a huge deal. I did mind, though, that it was listed as "hot and spicy" on the menu and ended up being neither. The dumplings were very bland - they were pretty much filled with just spinach. I'd recommend stuffing them with cabbage, ginger, and garlic, much more flavorful! The crab rangoon were good but very little stuffing in them. All this could have been saved by a good dipping sauce, but unfortunately both the duck sauce and dumpling sauce were totally without flavor. I had to use my own sriracha to get any sort of kick at all. The duck sauce was pink? Which I've never seen before. Normally I get a nice golden duck sauce that it sweet and rich. This seemed to be just light apple sauce? I'm not against ordering from this restaurant again, but with so many delicious places to try in the neighborhood, it would be a while before I circled back to here. read more

The dumplings are very fresh and worth the trip. The skin was done right, chewy and just the right thickness. Service was good and friendly. Prices were reasonable. Personally, I'd pass on the other menu items. The imperfections are first of all that it is not really Sichuan food.
