Quick, friendly service. Told them we were in a hurry and they accommodated us nicely and efficiently. Ordered Mongolian Chicken and upgraded to fried rice; General Tso's Chicken and upgraded to fried rice. Both are very flavorful and suited our taste buds perfectly. I got the wonton soup (4/5) and fried sautéed frog (4.5/5). Both were good. The frog was really good; there was a lot of meat on the bones, way more than I've gotten at other places. It also came with a lot of rice, and the vegetables were good. It was a lot of food and a good value! The service was good (4/5)! They did an excellent job of keeping our waters filled and got the check pretty quickly. However, I ordered the frog with picked turnip, but I think I got the fried frog instead. I could have been a bit clearer ordering though, so that is on me a little. The interior of the restaurant is good, nothing out of the ordinary (3/5). Overall, it is a solid choice! The most slept on Chinese spot in the city. BY FAR Went on a weekday night and there was only one other table in the entire restaurant so we were looked after by the staff well. You can tell this is mainly a takeout spot. I would recommend sitting there so you can get it all fresh The Szechuan dumplings were immaculate. The atmosphere is relaxed with distinctly Asian decor and white table cloths. Despite the formal decor, this is definitely a casual spot. The menu was a mix of traditional authentic Chinese, American Chinese, and other Asian dishes like pad thai. I ordered the beef and mixed vegetables with fried rice. It was tasty and met my expectation for this dish based upon experiences at other Chinese restaurants. Next time, I would like to try some of the other more authentic Chinese dishes, which seem to be more their specialty. Service was fast and our waiter was friendly. Very well situated between two nicer neighborhoods, I'd have expected more customers on a Thursday night. I was greeted by an older white gentleman to a fairly large establishment, most of the neighborhood could dine here if they desired. I ordered a tofu dish that was "authentic Szechuan" but wasn't. It came out nearly immediately and was warm and delicious, the waiter brought be chili oil at my request. This part of Pittsburgh needs to show up here and turn out! Unassuming place, but some of the best Szechuan food I've had in a while. I ordered the chicken feet with black bean sauce as an appetizer and Peking duck (half) for an entree. Both delicious. I stopped by here a couple of Saturday evenings ago with my wife for takeout. Szechuan Spice is located on Center Avenue in the Shadyside/Friendship area. Since I love authentic Szechuan food I was absolutely pumped to try this place. We decided to place our order by phone and a polite gentlemen answered and quickly took our order. He told us that our food would be ready in 20 minutes. Whenever I got to the restaurant 25 minutes later my food was indeed ready. The inside of this place was massive but it looks like during Covid that they are only doing takeout. While inside I did see a poster advertising their push cart dim sum on weekends which was presumably from before the pandemic, but it's definitely something I am interested in. In any case, I ended up getting checked out by the same gentleman that I talked to on the phone and it was quick and easy. Whenever we made it back to our house my wife and I opened our food. For dinner on this evening I decided to go with the Dan Dan noodles as well as the three pepper chicken while my wife went with a lo mein and we split an order of pork and cabbage dumplings. I started off with the Dan Dan noodles and thought that they were good. You could definitely taste the nuttiness in it and I also enjoyed the ground pork. However I wish there had been some more mala to it. After finishing with that I proceeded to eat my entree. It was a good dish as the chicken was cooked nicely and it definitely had a ton of heat to it from the long hot peppers and dried peppers. What I didn't get was any ma which I thought was supposed to come from pepper 3, the Sichuan peppercorn. So that was a little bit disappointing for me. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. While I thought that my dishes could have used some more numbing, I did still enjoy them and I am happy patronize another place with authentic Sichuan dishes. read more

I'm quite surprised by this place, since their food was very good. Some have noted that the prices are a bit high, but they are not outrageous. They are definitely worth the quality, and this is the spot to head to if you want high quality food in decent portions, not cheap American-Chinese. Today, I tried the pork dumplings with sauce, scallion pancake, and tapioca pudding. I've been on a recent dumpling-kick, so I can say Szechuan Spice's are pretty good. The shell is not too thick (New Dumpling House has much thicker shells) and the meat is quite flavorful. I would have wanted the meat to be cooked for a little longer though. Portion wise, this was decent. Prices are a tad higher. This is my first time trying a scallion pancake. There isn't a strong scallion taste to it, which I think I prefer. The texture and flavor is similar to Indian paratha, if you have ever tried that. I enjoyed this pancake and thought again, the portion was decent. Their side sauce is amazing! Seriously delicious, and it went with both the dumplings and the scallion pancake. I would dunk almost any appetizer in this. It's perfectly balanced, a little bit on the sweeter side. They also give you complimentary fortune cookies like most places. One of them was a little stale, so they weren't too good. Their tapioca pudding was also new to me. The tapioca pearls certainly give you a unique texture. The milk (I assume it's milk) is tasty and creamy. You'll find pieces of what seems to be taro in here, too. Not a huge fan of that, since it's a strange texture and flavor. This is not a very sweet dessert, but it seems authentic. All in all, if you're looking for Chinese food that's not too expensive but still tasty and authentic, this could be your spot. Portions are pretty decent and they have numerous unique dishes. I usually get take out so can't talk about the dine in ambiance experience. Service at pickup has always been friendly and efficient. Most recently I got three of my favorites for dinner. The Chongqing Diced Chicken, pieces of crispy crunchy fried chicken pieces with hot numbing peppers. Great balance of spicy, savory, and salty. The breading stays crunchy even when reheating the leftovers. I also got the mapo tofu, soft and silky tofu with lots of minced pork in a spicy sauce. No other place compares. The eggplant in garlic sauce is also delicious. Mouth watering and the eggplant is cooked perfectly. The portions at this place are also huge! Anyway I ordered crab rangoon and pad thai with chicken and shrimp. The delivery said 50-70 minutes but the food arrived well before that, which was awesome! The crab rangoon is in my favorite shape (the squares instead of the crowns) and it's pretty good. The pad thai has a different flavor/sauce from what I'm used to but it's not bad. I discovered this place from my girlfriend, who saw several ads and also frequently shops at Geagle and Aldi nearby. Needless to say we've been here several times and it's been solid every time. They have half off sushi on Wednesday, which I think tastes decently fresh (the unagi) Typically we ordered the broiled fish as well as the pea shoots. Both are tasty and authentic - however the broiled fish sometimes has a bit too much mala numbing spice, making our lips very tingly and sometimes just a bit overwhelming, so we ask for less spice. The veggies are also a bit on the oilier side. It's never been crowded and the place is very spacious, which I like since I never feel packed or disturbed by a lot of noise. By far one of the best Szechuan restaurants I have encountered! Yes they have an Americanized menu too, but expand your horizons and enjoy their very traditional and expansive menu!!! We ordered several items, all of which were wonderful. Not a single dish left the table with food on it! Even better the gentleman serving us was super friendly, attentive and had great conversations with us throughout our meal. Szechuan spice is the pinnacle of Chinese food in Oakland. After feeling unsatisfied with various locations in the area I spread my wings and tried something further into north Oakland; I was kissed on the forehead by a bagged, perforated container housing sesame chicken. I theorize Szechuan spice does this to keep the chicken from over cooking while producing its steam after being freshly fried. As overcooked chicken breast tends to get tough, stringy, and tight, Szechuan Spice fixes the problem through this solution. Not only does this problem result in quality food, but it's design allows the food to endure a difficult journey. Delivery. Wrapped in a plastic bag to ensure zero spillage, and perforated for the chickens temperature preference the meal is delivered and packs as much of a punch if you were to eat it in the restaurant. I got the white rice with my meal. It's a longer grain rice that was cooked nicely today. In the past I've gotten some clumpy boys but that tends to happen with that kind of rice so no biggie. The staff is super helpful and friendly, the food is delicious and having a reliable internal delivery service makes Szechuan Spice the place to order for Chinese delivery. read more

I came here in-person a couple of weeks ago and loved the chongqing diced chicken so much that I ordered it in as comfort food today. I was curious to see whether or not the appeal of the crispy, greasy, deliciously spicy chicken would be lost after a 20 minute car ride, and I'm happy to say that it held up extremely well. The chicken is VERY spicy (at least to someone such as myself who has a very moderate ability to handle spice) but it's so genuinely flavorful and delicious that even when my mouth is on fire I can't stop eating. If you enjoy spicy food then this chicken is a MUST have - this place has become my favorite Chinese food restaurant in Pittsburgh. Other dishes that I love are the black pepper chicken (not spicy but very flavorful and covered in a deliciously sweet and tangy sauce), the sautéed shredded potato is cooling and delicious after a bite of spicy food, the fried dumplings were pretty good, and in my opinion the star of the in-house meal was the whole cooked fish. The sauce was delicious and almost resembled a very light curry, the fish was tender, and for a large group it lasted a good amount of time. I was in with a group of 8 people and we were sat at a round table with a lazy Susan to spin all of the meals around so we could all try something different. In my opinion this was the best way to try everything - I highly recommend it! If you enjoy authentic Chinese food and a laid-back atmosphere then you will LOVE Szechuan Spice. read more

One of my Chinese go-tos. For me as a student, it is easily accessible by 71C/71A/82 and near Aldi, Giant Eagle, and Whole Foods farther down the street too. LUNCH SPECIAL ($7-$8): I have had the Shredded beef with hot pepper here, and thought it was kind of salty then I proceeded to pass out for 3 hours possibly from MSG?? Diced chicken Chengdu style is very good and has good spice, but the chicken pieces are a bit small. SUSHI LUNCH SPECIAL ($9-$12): 2 rolls for $9 with your choice of house salad or miso soup. Or a sashimi special! We always like to at least get the unagi maki :). BROILED FISH (~$19): Every Szechuan place I go to, I have to try this. Me and the boyfriend have tried their spicy broiled fish here several times, and they have made it with different veggies sometimes. I think it's best when served in the flat glass dish. PEA SHOOTS (~$10): Sometimes too oily, but always given a lot for your dollar. A lot of people seem to get delivery or take out, but I would try giving them a visit for dine-in! It is very spacious in here and they recently got some cozy black booths instead of regular tables. Ordered delivery and when the guy got here, he called, I told him to come around to the side of the house because that's where my entrance is. He just said "I'm here" hung up and delivered the food to my neighbors instead. Luckily I have honest neighbors. Got the 2 sushi roll lunch special. Shrimp tempura roll was 5/5. Insanely good. The cucumber and tobiko gave it a nice extra crunch and the avocado and crab were good additions. Sweet potato roll 2/5: I love sweet potato tempura rolls. But the tempura was completely soggy, the sweet potato was hard/not cooked or ripe, and the rice was dried out. Mapo tofu 3.5/5: This is kind of my fault because I didn't realize it came with soft tofu, but I thought the tofu made it really difficult to eat and was too slimy. The sauce was yummy but I would not order this again. Honestly it only got 4/5 because the shrimp tempura roll was so good and it was a really good amount of food for the price.
