When I first moved to Carnegie a decade ago, this place was abysmal. It was some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had. I vowed never to eat it again. However, I've recently started working on Main Street a few blocks away. When hankering for lunchtime Chinese, unfortunately, Don Don is the only option close. So I reluctantly gave it another try. It wasn't anywhere near as terrible as it was in the original location before the Papa J's fire. I've since had it several times over the course of this year. Each time, it was passably fine. The definition of mid. It will do whenever I am in the mood for Chinese, but I wish there were a better option. read more

Everyone at this restaurant is so nice! The restaurant is charming and old-fashioned kind of. But the food is really good! I wasn't really hungry so I just got a large bowl of wonton soup and a bowl of white rice and a Diet Coke that was a great meal! I know there are so many Chinese restaurants around, but I really hope that you'll check this one out. It reminds me of a great restaurant that used to be in Dupont Circle in DC when I lived there. It's long gone now of course. So happy new year! read more

Food was excellent and the service was too. Very nice owner. Been in business over 20 years. I had a staple of Sweet and Sour chicken. This was better than most because the sauce was server separately and you dipped the chicken in the sauce. First, the sauce was perfect. Not too sweet, like most Chinese restaurants, The chicken has a tender coating and not heavily fried. my wife tried Happy Trio and wants to go back. This is a big deal because she very very seldom tries something new. read more

Very interesting. Table service for 2 restaurants. You gave two different waiters & bills. One for Kasai (which had Japanese & Korean food) & one for Don Don (Chinese food). Very cool idea. Delicious food and good service. I'd definitely go back. The sign they had for deliver services was hilarious. Not the best atmosphere, but very good food for decent prices. read more

I have been ordering from Don don's since I first moved into Carnegie years ago. As times have changed their food has always kept the same great taste. Price is ok. Does seem to keep rising. But has always been a go to destination for take out for my family. read more

I ordered from Don Don Chinese Restaurant for the first time earlier this year. They've been here as long as I've lived in Carnegie, although they semi-recently changed buildings (and now share a kitchen with Kasai Kogi Bar Delivery). I never ate at their old location but decided earlier this year while cooped up at home that it was time to finally try this local dining option. I ordered wonton soup, dumplings, and pork with zucchini, figuring these things would be a good mix of appetizers and a main course. None of it disappointed, at least not by American Chinese food standards. The wonton soup and dumplings really hit the spot in terms of comfort food (AKA carbs, wonderful carbs!). The pork and zucchini dish was also delicious, which I was very happy about since pork is the sort of thing that some restaurants just can't prepare properly. Disclaimer: I can see someone disliking the sauce since it was on the sweeter side. But as with the appetizers, my comfort-seeking taste buds were happy! Note that I haven't eaten a sit-down meal at the restaurant itself since Don Don and Kasai began sharing the space, so I can't comment on an in-house dining experience in this particular review. But I can say that I was pleased with what I ordered. Everything was ready on-time (as I had ordered takeout) and was fresh, hot, and tasty when it got back to my apartment with me. I'll definitely have to order from them again when a craving for Chinese food strikes. read more

I don't live in the Pittsburgh area anymore, but we were visiting relatives, and wanted to pick up takeout for about six people. Chinese food like everything else is getting extremely expensive compared to what it used to be. But not this place. The food was outstanding and fresh Perfectly boxed up for us and exactly what we ordered the way we wanted it. Very cool experience. Not easy to find Chinese restaurants in Pittsburgh that have egg foo young. And this restaurant makes egg foo yong perfectly - crispy, and not greasy. And the price is extremely competitive and less than most. Also enjoyed their happy family and eggrolls. But again, this is a better restaurant for takeout, even though they do have comfortable tables to sit in, but they're very limited. read more

Fellow yelpers, you me down! First time that I walked out with out eating. Nothing was edible or fixable in the least. Got general Tso lunch. Fried rice was artificial yellow with a few cold peas. The rice itself was hard and cold. At least it had no flavor. I wish I could say the same about the egg roll. Equally hard and clearly old the inards looked and smelled like rotten cabbage. The chicken was, (well not sure it was chicken) mainly hard battered pieces with no meat or just gristle. The sauce was outstanding! Outstandingly awful! I swear it was ketchup and sugar and a drop of vinegar. I was the only one there during lunch time. Perhaps most people like it for delivery and would be nauseated if they saw how filthy the place is. I should have run out then read more

Listen. This isn't just any Chinese take out. I'm serious. When my husband and I don't feel like cooking and inevitably ask, "should we order out?" It takes every bit of self control I have to not suggest Don Don every. Single. Time. Is it good for my waistline? Absolutely not. Will the MSG and oil shave ten years off my life? Most likely. But will the dopamine released induce a euphoric addiction leaving me coming back for more? Oh you betcha. Grubhub the heck out of Don Don right now. You don't even need to get up (except to get the food from the front porch because you have social anxiety and can't stand to meet someone at the door, of course.) read more

I ordered delivery from here tonight, and I was pleasantly surprised. I think they have recently merged with Kasai sushi in Carnegie, and the old Don Don phone number does not work. If you call Kasai's number you can reach Don Don from there now too. I asked about delivery, and they only deliver the Chinese food items but not the sushi as of right now. I ordered the general tso chicken with white rice and crab rangoons. The rice was a little bit too...I don't want to say watery, but it might have been a little over cooked. That was my only issue, everything else was really good. The chicken was really flavorful, and I think a little bit better tasting than your average cheap Chinese place. The crab rangoons were really tasty and pretty much overfilled with filling, which was actually delicious. My total came to $16, so that is a bit steep, but it was worth it to fix my Chinese craving. They said it would take 45 minutes, but it only took like 25. I'll be ordering again in the future! read more

Seriously enjoy Don Don. It's our go to, "I don't want to cook, what do you want" option. We are big fans of greasy spoon Chinese takeout, and this is the best in the Burgh. read more

Best egg drop soup I have had in years. I also the lo mein is great. I will be reordering today.

Good portions for the price. Wonton soup was fantastic. The general tsos was good too. I requested medium spice, it wasn't spicy but still good read more

We ordered take out and it was amazing! Very authentic Chinese The service was fast and efficient.

Delicious! Great service. All around great time, travel from out of town just to get this food,

i am a fat alcoholic and i love chen's kitchen go chen go! 724 947 9898 or 724 947 9899 you can't beat this meat!

I came here with two friends prior to visiting Apis Meadery next door this past weekend. I ordered the General Tso's chicken, and my friends ordered the sesame chicken, crab rangoon, and another appetizer (egg rolls?). They ordered the combo with less meat, and I ordered the one with more--the names were very similar, which I found confusing. The food took quite a while to come up (~15 min.), so I'd suggest calling ahead if you're in a rush. While we were waiting, the woman behind the counter yelled at someone over the phone in Chinese, and then at a guy who came in to pick up food for delivery (probably the same person). To be honest, I'm not much of a fan of Americanized Chinese cuisine (I lived in Singapore for 3 mos. and have visited Hong King and Japan); it's been awhile since I've had it, and this dish reminded me why. I don't care for the overbearing sweetness and thickness of the sauce, nor do I care for the pre-cut meat in the dishes (I like to cut up my own meat, thank you very much), so the flavors and textures don't do much for me. Having said that, my friends claimed this was the best Americanized Chinese fare they'd had in PGH (and they live in Squirrel Hill!), so if you're a fan of this cuisine, you can take that into consideration. If nothing else, this meal provided us with some much-needed food to absorb the alcohol from the mead, which I appreciated. read more

I love this place for take out or delivery when they have it available! The combination plates are a great deal and the crab Rangoon are awesome. Anytime I've ordered here it's been delicious and quick. I don't the inside of the place is anything fancy nor have I really eaten inside their new build. They are also a modest price for how good the food is! They have great combo platters that include a main dish, fried rice, and an egg roll! read more

This is basic low cost Chinese food. Not great, but not bad - pretty average. I think for the cost its worth it

I used to order takeout here once every month or so. The food tastes average and the price is good. It's your typical low-end Chinese place. The last (and final) time I ordered here I just so happened to be picking up my order while a health inspector from allegheny county health department was making his rounds. While I was waiting on my food (which took much longer than usual) the inspector was pointing out violations. He also requested a copy of a certificate that the man behind the register was unable to produce. The inspector looked at me like I was crazy for waiting on my food despite the obvious poor conditions. As for the rest of the place - it's always been kind of dirty inside. The carpets are just FILTHY and the walls match. There are always children's toys scattered about the floor because the owners children are always there, so be careful not to trip. The workers do seem like nice people just trying to make a living but when it comes to cleanliness Don Don is lacking. read more

I get takeout from here every Sunday. Great food. Nice people. Good prices. Definitely worth your business!

There are a lot of bad reviews on here but I don't really know why. This is your classic chinese food place. The food is cheap and it doesn't taste half bad. We ordered delivery. I ordered the General tsos chicken and requested white meat. To my surprise the chicken wasn't fried like normal but that was fine by me. Overall not a bad place when there aren't too many places that deliver in carnegie. read more

This place is awful. This was our first (and only!) time we've eaten here. We got the crab rangoon, shrimp egg foo young, and shrimp with lobster sauce combo as a call-ahead takeout order. When we got there to pick up the food, it was ready but there were employees(?) or family lounging or napping in a couple of the booths. We should have known then that if they were that dead on a Saturday night the place wasn't that great. I mean, it's one thing for a restaurant to be family operated, and another thing for the restaurant to be like their apartment. Whatever. The food was almost inedible. The crab rangoon were decent, but that's not an item we usually get at a Chinese place, so we don't have much of a frame of reference. Egg foo young is my standard order--so I've had a plenty different places to compare to. It was gross. The patties of egg and shrimp were standard quality, but what really makes the meal is the sauce, which, thank god, comes on the side. This goop was dark dark brown and the consistency of raw egg yolks, which was super strange, so thankfully I put it on the side of my plate instead of on my food. It tasted like some bizarre combination of anise (licorice) and spearmint. What the hell. I scraped it off my plate. The shrimp with lobster sauce was also really strange. My husband, unfortunately, added the sauce straight to his food. It was also a weird, raw egg-y texture. He choked down the shrimp in the interest of not wasting money on the meal, but couldn't finish. I tried it and it was like pure salt. We ended up eating plain egg foo young patties with rice and some soy sauce we had at home. What a disappointment. read more

We went here on a whim because the pour house was busy and it was the best thing ever. The staff was so friendly and the food was great. Our bill was around $25 for the two of us. The waitress even hugged us. Highly recommended. read more

Before ordering from this place, I read all the reviews. The only bad reviews are from long ago, the more current reviews show favorability to the food and service. I will say up front that this isn't an authentic style Chinese restaurant, it's Chinese American, which isn't bad. They seem to cater to their patrons and give great service in doing so, and all for a good price. Their food tastes great. I had the Singapore noodles and my wife, the mixed vegetables with fried tofu in Hunan sauce. I can't say they're the best as I've only tried 2 dishes there as of current, but am impressed so far. I will update as I try more dishes from this establishment. To address some points made in older reviews. The restaurant seems clean to me, and mentions of the health department visit from a post years ago when it was in a different location, claiming violations and them not having a certificate are blown out of proportion. I'm a certified serve safe manager and the paper that it seems the board of health was looking for was a serve safe course completion, which they most likely had or produced shortly after or would have been shut down. The same goes for violations, they most likely were minor violations that could have led to bigger problems if not corrected, many restaurants have these minor problems, that's why the board of health comes around to prevent them from becoming big. On a final note, if you like spicy, you can request extra spice. Their Hunan sauce starts at about a 3-4 on a scale of 1 to 10. If you increase the spice level, do it in increments like try a 6, don't risk ruining your meal. I'm sure many of you will scan other reviews, that's why I'm lengthy in explaining so people will know the facts and the truth. I don't give a rating that isn't deserved. read more

This is my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant, I've been eating here since I was a child. I've never had a complaint about them. I used to get takeout here regularly from 2004 through 2009. It was just fine. I like the fact that they put the sauces out there for you to just take as much as you need without asking. I remember good flavors here, I ate food from here a dozen times and never got sick, no complaints. read more

Don Don is a restaurant I find myself missing now and again, it's probably my favorite restaurant in Carnegie. Simple setup, just a small restaurant with a few tables and a TV. Oddly enough I think my favorite thing to eat there is the wonton soup, never had better. The food is average but I always enjoyed eating there, great service and a cheap place to get Chinese food. read more

I use to order here fairly often. The past 2 years their food has been getting progressively worse every time I order. It doesn't help that the owner that always is at the register is so rude to me every time. I finally decided that I'm done. I don't think I should feel let an inconvenience when ordering food from a restaurant. Let alone one that the food isn't even that good. Also the inside is dirty as heck. They can deliver food in a BMW but they can't buy a scrub brush? I have found Golden Dragon in Collier Square is 100 times better then Don Don. read more

This is my go to Chinese place. I love their won ton soup. Their delivery is always at the time they promise.

Don Don is atleast as good as (although I personally happen to think better than) the majority of inexpensive Chinese places best equiped for delivery and take out. I've frequented many similar establishments in different parts of the country, and have also spent a few years in Japan. Sounds odd, but they have some amazing Chinese food out there. read more

My wife and I used to love this place. It was cheaply priced and delicious. Food has totally gone down hill.

All I can say is the worst! We were the only 2 people in the place for lunch, the place was freezing and loaded with kids toys! 2 bicycles, a scooter, and an electronic keyboard graced the dining room. A fish tank with filthy, slimy fingerprints smeared all over it is there for your enjoyment. Our food came... no water to drink, no tea, medium temperature food. Of course its cold, just like the room, I never took my jacket off! The plates are too small, you food spills over onto some semi-clean tables as you sit in your completely worn out booth seat. The fried noodles were out of a box and nasty, the shrimp was mushy, the fried rice was bright yellow. We asked for water, they brought us 1 in a SOLO cup for 2 people. I asked for hot tea, they said 10 minutes. What Chinese restaurant does not have hot tea available upon request? Over all.... my first and last visit to this place. The only good point was that it was cheap, and deservingly so. read more
