I feel blessed to live in the same town where the Computer Doctor is located. Steve, the owner,…read morehas always been helpful with diagnosis/repair of laptops I've brought him in the past, but more recently, he really hit a home run. My used laptop computer, which I'd bought from a private seller some three years ago, had never been a powerhouse, but it was fine for my modest needs. In the past few months, it became slower and slower, and, just as income tax time was looming, it stopped booting up. Not good. (Of course, I had already loaded tax return software on it, and started my tax return.) I dropped it off at his shop, which is neat and organized, on a Friday, and early next week had a diagnosis: the hard drive had failed. I was expecting to have to shop around for another used laptop (which I seem to do every 2 to 3 years), but Steve said it was light work to replace the hard drive. He also recommended increasing the memory from 4GB to 8GB. The price was surprisingly reasonable, so I authorized the work. Even though he had to order the additional memory, the computer was ready for pickup just a few days later, so the turnaround time was surprisingly quick. Steve stands behind his work. There was a very minor issue, which he fixed in five minutes. My laptop not only works well, it boots up much faster than before, and programs load very quickly (partly due to new hard drive technology, and partly due to increased memory). It was money well spent, and will allow me to get more use out of this computer. Parking is limited to on-street, which makes me nervous since the street is hilly and curvy there, but it is what it is. Hours are limited, and since it is a one-man business, and he does service calls at homes and businesses, he is not always in the shop during stated business hours. Also, the shop is not open on Saturdays. Although it is sometimes difficult to get access to Steve, it is nevertheless worth the effort because of the quality of work coupled with very reasonable prices.

I've since been back two more times for a new GPU and recently, new CPU, Motherboard and RAM upgrade. He's perfect at handling any questions that I have had and lastly, his work is great and I've found his prices very reasonable. The Computer Doctor is easily my go to Computer repair shop for life.

Great people, but lousy service…read more I had a problem with my gaming PC. Fairly high end unit. Has worked flawlessly for the last 13 months. Suddenly it had freezing issues and eventually failed to post when attempting to start up. Looked up local repair shops and found PC Tech. Reviews seemed to say good things. Disconnected the cords, gave the case a final wipedown and drove over. After dropping my PC off and waiting a few days, the diagnosis came in as a "bad motherboard". I asked how it could have failed and was told "irregular voltage could have done it." I figured my surge protector was junk and purchased a new one while waiting on PC Tech to take delivery of the replacement motherboard and install. I finally got the call that the motherboard came in and the PC would be ready shortly. Started heading down to the shop. Halfway there I got another call with bad news. The motherboard wasn't the issue, the PROCESSOR was the issue. No clue how the motherboard was determined to be the problem when it clearly wasn't and the processor wasn't examined. Okay, its the holidays. They're slammed with customers. I'm an adult. I don't need a gaming PC to survive. I'll be patient, let them refund me on the motherboard and order the equally expensive replacement processor. It arrives rather quickly and is installed the following day. I get the call, head down to pick it up and see it demonstrated in the shop. Excellent. Fork over the payment and return home. All seems well until the next day when I begin encountering freezing issues that appeared before my last processor died. The AIO cooler hoses are hot to the touch again. I poked around inside with a flashlight and found the CPU radiator to be nearly packed with dust. The back of each fan blade on both the pusher and puller fans are caked in a layer of fine dust. Clearly my cleaning efforts weren't aggressive enough over the past year- but what escapes me is how the radiator wasn't cleaned out when the motherboard was swapped. I'm not an expert but you have to remove the cooler to access both the motherboard and processor beneath the pump. So all in all- it seems the "parts cannon" was fired at the issue and the reassembly was sloppy, as any technician with an ounce of sense could have blown the radiator fins clean during reassembly. This place is a Jiffy Lube, don't take your Ferrari here when you get carbon on the valves.

This was the third computer repair service I tried to see if my wife's two broken laptop computers…read morecould be saved. Neither of the first two services I tried (Computer Doctor in West Warwick, and PC Tech in Warwick) answered their phones during their posted business hours. Ironically, although Common Courtesy works by appointment only, the owner actually answered the phone when I called on a Saturday morning. I was able to drop off the computers that same morning, and was told they would call me Tuesday. As promised, they called Tuesday to report their initial evaluation. The older laptop (which we'd bought used for about $200 or $250), overheated severely and had a damaged hard drive (it had been banged into a wall while it was on). Considering what we'd paid for it, it was more cost-effective to simply buy another used one, instead of repair this one, the owner explained. The other laptop (which we'd bought new for about $300 or $350), had been dropped, and the charging jack inside the computer had broken. Common Courtesy explained that this was a low-end laptop, and was very labor intensive to dis-assemble, as it was not built with ease of servicing in mind. Due to their familiarity with this laptop's construction, it was quite possible that the jack itself was okay, but the mounting board it was attached to was broken. It would take considerable labor to replace the board that the jack was mounted on, they explained. Furthermore, there could be additional damage from the fall (such as a bad hard drive), but that could not be diagnosed without tearing the laptop apart. Again, buying a used and/or refurbished laptop would be our best bet. Common Courtesy sometimes sells refurbished laptops, but currently had none available, as they tend to sell out quickly around Christmas. After relaying this information to my wife, we ultimately ending up buying a new laptop (Chromebook, in particular, for about $250) from Best Buy. As for the old laptops, we decided to let Common Courtesy Computers keep the older one to recycle it for parts, but my wife wanted the newer laptop back. Due to the fact that Common Courtesy does not have a store or shop with regular business hours, it was a bit difficult making arrangements to pick up the old computer we wanted to keep. I had to reschedule appointments twice before I was finally able to get the computer back. But, to their credit, Common Courtesy was always responsive answering the phone or returning calls. I was also thankful that there was no charge to us for evaluating the laptops. Common Courtesy is apparently a one-person operation; although their operations are based within a large strip mall on Warwick Avenue, the owner also works off-site at clients' businesses or homes, and therefore, cannot sit in a storefront shop all day. My family's computing needs would probably be served more conveniently by a slightly larger computer sales/service business, that has more than one person, and a store with regular business hours, and a larger inventory of reconditioned computers. We had been going to such a place in Warwick for several years, but apparently, they are no longer around, so finding a replacement business has been difficult. Nevertheless, I was impressed with Common Courtesy - their name suits them very well, because they have the common courtesy (which is actually not-so-common these days) of answering and returning phone calls. Also, the owner explained the problems with my wife's computers in an easy to understand, non-technical way, and gave common-sense advice that I readily concurred with. If you don't mind working within the appointment-only business model that Common Courtesy uses, then I would recommend them without hesitation to any homeowner or business that needs computer help.
