oh suh-weet jumping jeez.
I think I get my keenest culinary frissons when we roll onto a superior breakfast joint. Any pinhead can fry up some eggiwegs and bacon, but show me a joint where there is someone really cooking in the kitchen, and it's off to the races.
The previous tenants, "Colonial Cafe" were pretty much there. Stuff out of the ordinary on the Menu with decent coffee. I always enjoyed.
Syrup, however, is a step up from THAT.
I didn't file my review immediately, as I wanted to course through the menu making sure I just wasnt starry-eyed on our first visit.
Wife is a traditionalist, the 3 x 3 is her regular, and she remains the control example for every joint we go to. She has given her "thumbs-up" to the Eggs/Bacon/french toast thing which she orders each time. A note about the bacon--it is top top notch. You can skip the "Billion Dollar Bacon" side order for $7.50. It's gilding the lily--the regular rashers are totally fab enough!
Back to me:
So far, I've been through the Smoked Salmon Bagel with a shmear. I couldn't understand the cubic shit-ton of Rocket/Argula they put on the plate. I like greens, but this was a little overstated. Didn't mar the quality of the rest of the meal, though. I sent back enough foliage to make a decent salad...
They have a home-made patty sausage that is divine. Other high-end brekky boîtes do this too, but many times the patty is overcooked and can be chewy and dry. Not here. Syrup's patty is a little smaller, but cooked just right-porky and tasty. Perfect with eggs or anything else.
I came to eggiwegs later in life and have never been an aficionado for Benedicts. I always say "Every theory needs a corollary" and I have ordered every Benedict on the menu. They are all tip-top. As they say...go figure.
I'm not a pancake eater, but true to my silly tastes, I've never met a waffle I didn't like. They have a quartet of mini-waffles here on a sampler, each with a different topping. You'd think this would be a diabetic gateway, with all the sweet stuff indicated. Here's the juice: This plate is gorgeous, and it's "just enough". You never get that cloying "ooh that was WAY too much" one sometimes gets from an outrageous plate. Transparency-I always get an order of the afore-mentioned patty sausage as a savory buffer. Do it that way-trust me. I have a pal, a serious eater who also dabbles in network television audio. He calls this waffle dish "crack". You can get any of the four toppings on a full-size Belgian, if desired. I prefer the variety and portion of the sampler, though.
Speaking of Pancakes/Waffles; They bring out fine trad maple syrup and a flask of some pearlescent goo which should be submitted for the nobel prize. Butter/sugar and fuck-all else but who cares? This syrup is a triumph!
A few things to gripe about, however. The Mexican things aren't quite up to the level of the rest of the menu. Their "Crispy Seasoned Potatoes"...aren't really crispy...or seasoned. The only loser on the menu-even when you get the "loaded" option. I swing with the excellent grits. There's a "cheesy" option, which I don't get, 'cos the plain grits are great by themselves. Says a lot when you can leave "cheese" off an order.
A few more bugaboos-There are salt and pepper shakers on the tables that look identical. You can't tell which one is which, unless you shake them out. The one with a tiny bit of white stuff falling from it is the salt, and the one with nothing coming out is the pepper. Good thing most of the stuff offered here doesn't need table seasoning. And that ambrosial white pancake sauce I spoke of earlier is presented in a flask that barely dispenses it. I have to pull the topper off and pour it on my dish, leaving my hand sticky and such. Some of these are lapses in logic I can't understand coming from a joint that does so much else so well.
The coffee is great, and there are boozy treats available though I haven't dared try any of them...
Yet.
I'll have a cocktail with breakfast in New Orleans (It's the LAW there). But I'll opt for good behavior here in the hood.
The service is great, the restrooms are spotless, and the place is bright and cheerful. Expect lines, though--this joint ain't no secret... read more
