Custom dress are made from her manufacturer in Guandong China. Her prices are mid range from $450- 500 premade depending on the details on the dress to $950+ customized dress. It takes at least 6 weeks to get a customized cheongsam. The quality of her pieces and the fabric used are well made compared to the store on Mott Street in Chinatown. They are way overpriced for cheap material premade cheongsam which you can buy online. Customized ones cost over $1500. That's too much to spend for only one night for a wedding. Go with Sylvia... hopefully she won't retire too soon. read more

Many qipao stores have closed since the pandemic, thank goodness Sylvia's is still around. I came up from DC to find a wedding qipao after a frustrating day of not being allowed to try on garments in Manhattan Chinatown. Despite only making an appointment 2 hours prior, Sylvia allowed me to try on as many as I wanted and was super helpful in helping me decide among options. I found brocade styles that I've never seen at other stores or online. I came back several months later (timed with a work trip) to try on what I had ordered -- it had to be shipped from China. I thought I would have to return for a third trip to pick up my tailoring but no, Sylvia made adjustments while I got lunch in Flushing and I took it home that afternoon! Quality qipaos are hard to find especially when there aren't many stores that make them or can customize it for you but Sylvia's can. I went back in April for my wedding in May and she was quick with helping me, my husband and the two moms with what we all needed! First, I chose the style/print I liked and all she did was look at me and got me a size she thinks fits me best. She really knows her stuff because when I tried on the size she gave, it fitted me well but loose. Of course, if she gave me one size smaller, it probably would have fit snug. She immediately helped pinned me so she knows what she needed to do, then on to the next. My husband has broad shoulders but smaller bottom- so she provided her suggestions of what would look best for him- we had to customize his top for him but it was as simple as that. For the two moms- she was readily available to answer questions about the fit, the look and everything in between. She is great to communicate with and just to talk to in general. She is honest with her opinions because ultimately she wants to make sure you feel good in what you wear. It took about 3 weeks to get our altered and customized tops but I felt so good in the final product. She makes sure to enhance your overall looks by taking in at the right spots! When i went to pick the dress up, she even sggested for me to take the dress in a tad more to give me a more fitted look- she did it in 10 mins! You get what you paid for- and this is especially true here. After my wedding, I had a few guests and vendors ask where I got my dress from. That really is a testament to the great work Sylvia produces! read more

I came here to try on wedding qi paos and it was such a fun experience! I haven't had the chance to wear a qi pao since I was a child so as an adult, this was great to see how I looked in one. Went in September 2022, and realized that the dresses are made in China and Sylvia does the alterations here. All Chinese brides will want to know about Sylvia's Boutique. If you've tried searching for a qipao, and you've realized how difficult it can be to find a decent place and how, when you do find a decent place, you discover how expensive it can be to get a custom dress, then this is vital information and the reason why you'll want to know about this boutique atelier in Flushing. Firstly, her store is sandwiched in-between some residential 3 family homes and I think, a hotel or Lucille Roberts. It's a bizarre location, with not as much foot traffic as Main Street, and the reason why it can be overlooked. The store is lovely though, with tons of wedding qipaos sold off the rack, as well as Men's traditional Chinese-style wedding jackets. Prices seem to range between $100 - $300 (for custom orders). The quality of her dresses is very impressive and Sylvia's handiwork is impeccable (she makes all of the gowns). Secondly, Sylvia speaks English! For us "ABC's" out there who don't really speak a lick of Mandarin, Cantonese or other Chinese dialect, this is a godsend that someone can communicate with you in English while you are in Flushing. My sister got married in April, and we searched high and low for her qipao. She's kind of EXTREMELY PICKY, so there was nothing at any of the Flushing wedding studios that interested her enough to rent. I found some online shops, but she didn't want to risk taking a chance on ordering a dress online (understandable), and we even went to some shops in Chinatown, but again, she didn't find any that she liked enough and the prices they quoted for a custom order were outrageous. Then we discovered Sylvia's and there was a qipao that my sister liked off the rack, which was for a very reasonable price, and Sylvia was able to jazz it up by adding some swarvoski jewels as embellishments to make the dress slightly more flashy, otherwise the dress was very pretty, but also too plain for a wedding. This was an additional fee, but the end product was stunning, and my sister loved it. My sister also had her wedding dress tailored here, and a majority of her bridesmaids (4 out of 6), came to Sylvia to get our dresses adjusted as well. The prices are decent (my bridesmaid dress was tailored for $60), and Sylvia's attention to detail (plus the VERY helpful advice and suggestions she gives) was completely spot-on. I have been coming to Sylvia's for years. I purchased my Chinese wedding dress from her boutique. She altered my white wedding dress for a fraction of the cost the wedding boutique charged and did so with such care. Her work is excellent and she's reasonably priced! Was attending my first Chinese New Year dinner party and wanted to wear a qipao (my first one) rather than a regular, old red sweater. Sylvia is an incredible tailor and dressmaker. I got my bridal qipao here and the process was extremely easy and efficient--an initial visit to pick out my style and take my measurements, then I came back to try it on once I was done, and then she made a couple more adjustments so it fit me perfectly. The dress is so well-made that my dry cleaner, unprompted, noticed and raved about its quality and attention to detail! When I mini-panicked two days before my wedding because my Western dress no longer fit quite right, she calmly tailored it right away, and you'd never be able to tell that the dress was altered. You need to see Sylvia not just for qipao--but please do, she's one of the only people left in NYC who can make them for you!!!!!--but also for all of your tailoring and alteration needs for any style of clothing. Came here after googling it on yelp.... I just love dresses especially qipao. So my assignment was to look for one for my little nieces for Chinese new year...and of course i had to get some for myself... There is a big selection of qipao in many different colors but mostly in red. And of course the best color of choice... And many different sizes even for people with broader shoulder or the weightlifting body lol. Sylvia is the owner, whom i struck up a conversation with. She always wanted to open a dress shop when she was a young girl and finally she her wishes came true and to be able to really sustain and enjoy her hobby. She said she used to make dresses for her friend before she had this shop and made her hobby in to her dream. The dresses in the shop are well made with double lining that is the store brand sylvia. There are others that are not her brand that do not have a double lining. The quality is well made. And she would help tailor or make custom ones if you have more time. Also first alterations to take in more is free the second time is not... And lengthening or shorting the dress is extra since the outter rim is more difficult to create.... Trust me i asked...though i didn't ask how much... She is also very straight forward well at least with me she didn't sugar coat that certain types woukd not look good for me...and no i didnt mind that at all... Rather have someone tell me the truth then let me walk out and look silly... So its a great place to go to if your looking for a qipao as a starting or a end point the prices are not cheap but its cost about that for a nice dress from any store. This lady works some serious magic! On a Tuesday, I bought a beautiful Monique Lhuiller dress at a MAJOR discount on gilt and had it overnighted to me. The only problem was my shon (boobs) by were tai dah (too big) to fit into it- this was Wednesday and the wedding was Saturday. At the suggestion of a co-worker, I made the long journey out to Flushing Thursday night after work hoping Mrs. Sylvia would be able to help me. I was a little intimidated by this shop with all the traditional Chinese dresses for waif-y Asian chicks when I so obviously was not, but Sylvia and her friend Angie were super nice to me! Although she said the dress didn't have enough fabric to let it out, Mrs. Sylvia said that she could take some fabric from the ruffles and put an extra panel in the sides- the panels would be flat bc she probably couldn't match the ruching. Anything would be better than nothing, so I anxiously agreed. To my surprise, when I returned Friday night (yeah, one day later!), the dress was done, ruching and everything!!! It actually looks like the dress came with the panels (see pictures)!! She has a customer for life!!!! I know that it may seem like a trek, but well worth it... just think, you can go get some yummy soup dumplings and/or bubble tea while you're out in Flushing. read more

There was a wide selection of long dresses and short dresses in various colors/designs and I was able to select one off the rack. She makes custom dresses as well but there is a huge selection of premade dresses. Sylvia was very helpful in helping me decide which patterns and cut of the dress looked best on me. I ended up going with a shorter red dress, although my mom wanted the traditional longer qipao. Alterations are included in the price of the dress and the prices are extremely reasonable. I've been to the qipao store in Chinatown and was not pleased with the attitude and service of the attendants. Sylvia was warm and friendly and she was able to alter my dress and return it to me within a few weeks. My chinese is terrible but Sylvia speaks english so communication was key.
