Many qipao stores have closed since the pandemic, thank goodness Sylvia's is still around. I came up from DC to find a wedding qipao after a frustrating day of not being allowed to try on garments in Manhattan Chinatown. Despite only making an appointment 2 hours prior, Sylvia allowed me to try on as many as I wanted and was super helpful in helping me decide among options. I found brocade styles that I've never seen at other stores or online. I came back several months later (timed with a work trip) to try on what I had ordered -- it had to be shipped from China. I thought I would have to return for a third trip to pick up my tailoring but no, Sylvia made adjustments while I got lunch in Flushing and I took it home that afternoon! I could not recommend making the trek out here more. read more

I absolutely love this place. I needed a dress for my tea ceremony within three months and she delivered!! Selection & Value: 5/5 She explains the cost of each dress upfront and talks you through colors and fabrics. I adjusted the style of my collar to be more traditional. My dress was around $700 due my personalization and fabric choices. All in all, she is now my go-to tailor and my first pick for these dress. Definitely recommend! read more

Sylvia's Boutique - Fitting in store!! - Women's Clothing Near Me - Flushing, New York

Sylvia is such a nice lady who is experienced with making cheongsam for over 20 years. She has ones you can buy off the rack and customized ones. Custom dress are made from her manufacturer in Guandong China. Her prices are mid range from $450- 500 premade depending on the details on the dress to $950+ customized dress. It takes at least 6 weeks to get a customized cheongsam. The quality of her pieces and the fabric used are well made compared to the store on Mott Street in Chinatown. They are way overpriced for cheap material premade cheongsam which you can buy online. Customized ones cost over $1500. That's too much to spend for only one night for a wedding. Go with Sylvia... hopefully she won't retire too soon. read more

Sylvia's Boutique has the best qi paos you can find in NYC. The prices are reasonable and the qi pao I chose for my wedding received so many compliments. I initially wanted to wear a traditional Chinese dress for the tea ceremony portion, but I loved this dress so much that I decided to wear it out for our grand entrance at the reception. We entered in with traditional lion dancers and it was phenomenal. Thank you Sylvia for making my wedding as memorable as it was! read more

Quality qipaos are hard to find especially when there aren't many stores that make them or can customize it for you but Sylvia's can. I went back in April for my wedding in May and she was quick with helping me, my husband and the two moms with what we all needed! First, I chose the style/print I liked and all she did was look at me and got me a size she thinks fits me best. She really knows her stuff because when I tried on the size she gave, it fitted me well but loose. Of course, if she gave me one size smaller, it probably would have fit snug. She immediately helped pinned me so she knows what she needed to do, then on to the next. My husband has broad shoulders but smaller bottom- so she provided her suggestions of what would look best for him- we had to customize his top for him but it was as simple as that. For the two moms- she was readily available to answer questions about the fit, the look and everything in between. She is great to communicate with and just to talk to in general. She is honest with her opinions because ultimately she wants to make sure you feel good in what you wear. It took about 3 weeks to get our altered and customized tops but I felt so good in the final product. She makes sure to enhance your overall looks by taking in at the right spots! When i went to pick the dress up, she even sggested for me to take the dress in a tad more to give me a more fitted look- she did it in 10 mins! You get what you paid for- and this is especially true here. After my wedding, I had a few guests and vendors ask where I got my dress from. That really is a testament to the great work Sylvia produces! read more

Gorgeous dresses for my 5 year old daughter to wear for Chinese new year and Sylvia was so nice

Sylvia made me the wedding dress of my dreams! We are forever grateful for her artistic skill and talents. I wore this red qipao like dress as my wedding gown and did not wear white. She made me a 14 inch train and made the dress to compliment my figure. She was able to put the Peacock on the front and back of my dress where I wanted it and she fitted everything at the end. Our family is so happy with everything and my niece and nephew also looked very good in the matching outfits she provided. Thank you so much for your hard work to make our wedding day very special. This dress complimented my Italian heritage and my husbands Taiwanese heritage as well. The red, the birds, the mermaid body complimenting fit. This dress checked all the boxes. read more

I came here to try on wedding qi paos and it was such a fun experience! I haven't had the chance to wear a qi pao since I was a child so as an adult, this was great to see how I looked in one. Sylvia has custom designs as well as more commonly seen design/fabrics that's are ready to purchase. She fits you into these dresses and tells you like a true mother what looks good and what doesn't. In the end I ended up not buying one because my MIL bought a dress for me (non qi pao), but I really loved the quality of the fabrics and oh they felt soo silky and cool! read more

I was invited to a lunar new year party very last minute and wanted to purchase my very first cheongsam for the occasion. I found Sylvia's via some Reddit research and made an appointment to shop her store the afternoon of the party. The experience was pleasant from start to finish, I found many styles I loved and landed on a perfect dress! Not to mention, it required zero tailoring (although I've read that she does alterations as part of the price of the dress). I cannot wait to find another event to wear this to and definitely can't wait to get married so I can go back! What a pleasure, thank you Sylvia! read more

This boutique exceeded my expectations. There was a wide array of qipaos to choose from in all different styles --modern, classic, and traditional. All designs were elegant and reasonable in price. Rather than design my own qipao -- an option at this boutique -- I choose to select something off the rack. The dress was only $99 dollars and is stunning. The dress complimented my figure "hugged me in all the right places" and made me feel like a million bucks. I am so impressed with the owner's design skills and the price. Did I mention that the tailoring is included in the total price? My fiancé was at the location with me and we both walked out feeling like I had the perfect dress to honor his family's tradition. Honoring an eighty eight year old grandma... priceless! read more

I was looking for a cheong sam for my tea ceremony. Sylvia was very welcoming, responsive and had many styles and cuts to choose from - from dragon phoenix sets, qi piaos with the side slit and other designs of her own. From her experience she was able to make suggestions about what might look good. Once I purchased a dress, she also took it in and hemmed it at no extra charge. I was hoping to get a cheongsam for my wedding. The reviews for Sylvia were undeniable so I decided to check it out. Went in September 2022, and realized that the dresses are made in China and Sylvia does the alterations here. So, before I had the wedding dress made I decided to do a dry run to test the process (wanted to have a cheongsam anyway). It was super successful. The tailoring was excellent and exceeded my expectations. With the wedding in May, I waited until Jan to get the wedding dress made. Turned out beautifully and received many many compliments on my non traditional choice for a wedding dress. Thank you Sylvia for making my wedding day so special. read more

I came here to purchase a jacket for my wedding next month. This was the easiest and most pleasant purchase of the wedding The owner was present and immediately came over and spoke to us about what we were looking for and made a couple recommendations. The owner, my fiancée, and I had a nice conversation about weddings and the jacket as we search for a good match for the criteria. The jackets were comfortable, good quality, and reasonably priced. Easy day. I left with a jacket that doesn't need to be altered at all below the price I expected to pay. I'm happy! read more

All Chinese brides will want to know about Sylvia's Boutique. If you've tried searching for a qipao, and you've realized how difficult it can be to find a decent place and how, when you do find a decent place, you discover how expensive it can be to get a custom dress, then this is vital information and the reason why you'll want to know about this boutique atelier in Flushing. Firstly, her store is sandwiched in-between some residential 3 family homes and I think, a hotel or Lucille Roberts. It's a bizarre location, with not as much foot traffic as Main Street, and the reason why it can be overlooked. The store is lovely though, with tons of wedding qipaos sold off the rack, as well as Men's traditional Chinese-style wedding jackets. Prices seem to range between $100 - $300 (for custom orders). The quality of her dresses is very impressive and Sylvia's handiwork is impeccable (she makes all of the gowns). Secondly, Sylvia speaks English! For us "ABC's" out there who don't really speak a lick of Mandarin, Cantonese or other Chinese dialect, this is a godsend that someone can communicate with you in English while you are in Flushing. My sister got married in April, and we searched high and low for her qipao. She's kind of EXTREMELY PICKY, so there was nothing at any of the Flushing wedding studios that interested her enough to rent. I found some online shops, but she didn't want to risk taking a chance on ordering a dress online (understandable), and we even went to some shops in Chinatown, but again, she didn't find any that she liked enough and the prices they quoted for a custom order were outrageous. Then we discovered Sylvia's and there was a qipao that my sister liked off the rack, which was for a very reasonable price, and Sylvia was able to jazz it up by adding some swarvoski jewels as embellishments to make the dress slightly more flashy, otherwise the dress was very pretty, but also too plain for a wedding. This was an additional fee, but the end product was stunning, and my sister loved it. My sister also had her wedding dress tailored here, and a majority of her bridesmaids (4 out of 6), came to Sylvia to get our dresses adjusted as well. The prices are decent (my bridesmaid dress was tailored for $60), and Sylvia's attention to detail (plus the VERY helpful advice and suggestions she gives) was completely spot-on. Turn around time was also very quick! Did I mention she speaks English? Win! read more

I came to Sylvia to make a qipao for my wedding. The final product was absolutely beautiful and truly a dress that I felt so special in. I am now thinking of other events that I can wear it to! I wanted something specific and customized, and Sylvia worked with me to make it happen. She was open to and understood my ideas, and added her valuable opinion on design options throughout the process. From being very flexible on setting up times for fittings to searching for the right fabric for the qipao, Sylvia did everything she could to produce a dress that met the quality standards she would be happy with and that I would love. Her price was very fair for all the effort that went into the project. I would instantly recommend her to anyone looking for formal Chinese dress. The fact that she absolutely loves what she does is just an added bonus to working with her. Thank you, Sylvia! read more

I have been coming to Sylvia's for years. I purchased my Chinese wedding dress from her boutique. She altered my white wedding dress for a fraction of the cost the wedding boutique charged and did so with such care. Her work is excellent and she's reasonably priced! Now I bring her all kinds of things to alter from hemming pants to letting out pants to sizing down a cashmere overcoat. She manages to get any piece of clothing to fit better. I would love to purchase matching qi paos for myself and my daughter but I haven't yet figured out where we will wear them. read more

Was attending my first Chinese New Year dinner party and wanted to wear a qipao (my first one) rather than a regular, old red sweater. I frantically googled on my lunch break as the dinner was....in a few hours. Oh and did I mention I also needed to pick something up for the bf to wear? Sylvia's Boutique really came through as the service I received from Sylvia was personable, honest, and I felt truly taken care of. After trying on one traditional qipao and one modern version designed by Sylvia herself, I opted for a red, long, open-collared, qipao. Sylvia even altered it right there on the spot. I also found a men's jacket for the boyfriend and we were good to go. I got SO SO MANY compliments on my dress. Friends were shocked that it was a super last minute buy because it fit me like a glove --all thanks to Sylvia's Boutique. Although I don't wear qipao's often, I will definitely be returning for my tailoring needs--top notch service. read more

Sylvia is an incredible tailor and dressmaker. I got my bridal qipao here and the process was extremely easy and efficient--an initial visit to pick out my style and take my measurements, then I came back to try it on once I was done, and then she made a couple more adjustments so it fit me perfectly. The dress is so well-made that my dry cleaner, unprompted, noticed and raved about its quality and attention to detail! When I mini-panicked two days before my wedding because my Western dress no longer fit quite right, she calmly tailored it right away, and you'd never be able to tell that the dress was altered. You need to see Sylvia not just for qipao--but please do, she's one of the only people left in NYC who can make them for you!!!!!--but also for all of your tailoring and alteration needs for any style of clothing. She's amazing!!!!! (Also, she speaks perfect English, AND she's really kind; she checked up on me all of 2020 to see if I needed covid PPE.) read more

Came here after googling it on yelp.... I just love dresses especially qipao. So my assignment was to look for one for my little nieces for Chinese new year...and of course i had to get some for myself... There is a big selection of qipao in many different colors but mostly in red. And of course the best color of choice... And many different sizes even for people with broader shoulder or the weightlifting body lol. Sylvia is the owner, whom i struck up a conversation with. She always wanted to open a dress shop when she was a young girl and finally she her wishes came true and to be able to really sustain and enjoy her hobby. She said she used to make dresses for her friend before she had this shop and made her hobby in to her dream. The dresses in the shop are well made with double lining that is the store brand sylvia. There are others that are not her brand that do not have a double lining. The quality is well made. And she would help tailor or make custom ones if you have more time. Also first alterations to take in more is free the second time is not... And lengthening or shorting the dress is extra since the outter rim is more difficult to create.... Trust me i asked...though i didn't ask how much... She is also very straight forward well at least with me she didn't sugar coat that certain types woukd not look good for me...and no i didnt mind that at all... Rather have someone tell me the truth then let me walk out and look silly... So its a great place to go to if your looking for a qipao as a starting or a end point the prices are not cheap but its cost about that for a nice dress from any store. Dresses range from 150's to the 600 or more for more detailing... There is one dress that i love.... Maybe next time... I gotten two too many already... Did i mention there is a 20 percent off? Right now don't know how long it will be read more

Sylvia did a fantastic job on my dress with such short notice! Make sure to give her a call before coming to the shop. I was in dire need to alter my dress. Her pricing was very fair and honest. She gave me two options, and I went with the pricier one. She gives you honest opinions, tells you what needs to be done and how it will be done. She basically had to take my lace dress apart and re-sew it. She told me that it took her about a day and a half to get it done. It was practically a new dress when she was done with it. It was 2 sizes smaller and expertly tailored. Sylvia also makes beautiful custom Chinese wedding dresses. I would definitely come to her when the time comes. There are lots of ready-to-wear options in the shop as well. Location can be easily overlooked. Worth stopping by. read more

We visited Sylvia's Boutique in order to look for a qipao in place of a prom dress for my daughter. Sylvia has an extensive collection within her shop, many handmade and designed by Sylvia herself. Despite the various patterns and designs on stock, my daughter decided on a custom designed dress. Throughout the entire design process, Sylvia was very insightful and offered her experience to create a beautiful, elegant design that complimented the features. From the vague ideas and images my daughter had compiled, she was able to create a comprehensive design. She was also able to guide us in order to make the design more comfortable for the entire duration of prom. The result of her excellent craftsmanship was a completely unique look. Sylvia is very reasonable, honest, and kind. Her passion is clear in the work that she has done. read more

This lady works some serious magic! On a Tuesday, I bought a beautiful Monique Lhuiller dress at a MAJOR discount on gilt and had it overnighted to me. The only problem was my shon (boobs) by were tai dah (too big) to fit into it- this was Wednesday and the wedding was Saturday. At the suggestion of a co-worker, I made the long journey out to Flushing Thursday night after work hoping Mrs. Sylvia would be able to help me. I was a little intimidated by this shop with all the traditional Chinese dresses for waif-y Asian chicks when I so obviously was not, but Sylvia and her friend Angie were super nice to me! Although she said the dress didn't have enough fabric to let it out, Mrs. Sylvia said that she could take some fabric from the ruffles and put an extra panel in the sides- the panels would be flat bc she probably couldn't match the ruching. Anything would be better than nothing, so I anxiously agreed. To my surprise, when I returned Friday night (yeah, one day later!), the dress was done, ruching and everything!!! It actually looks like the dress came with the panels (see pictures)!! She has a customer for life!!!! I know that it may seem like a trek, but well worth it... just think, you can go get some yummy soup dumplings and/or bubble tea while you're out in Flushing. read more

I originally wasn't planning on wearing a red dress for my wedding but decided to check out the store to see the options. There was a wide selection of long dresses and short dresses in various colors/designs and I was able to select one off the rack. She makes custom dresses as well but there is a huge selection of premade dresses. Sylvia was very helpful in helping me decide which patterns and cut of the dress looked best on me. I ended up going with a shorter red dress, although my mom wanted the traditional longer qipao. Alterations are included in the price of the dress and the prices are extremely reasonable. I've been to the qipao store in Chinatown and was not pleased with the attitude and service of the attendants. My wedding was a month and a half away, and I made a late decision to get a qipao made. I went to Sylvia's based on her Yelp reviews. She let me know the prices for pre-made and custom-made qipaos. Once I made my choice to have a custom one made, she helped me pick out a qipao design that had a modern twist and that was flattering to my body type. Sylvia was able to complete the qipao within three weeks. When I needed a slight alteration made to the quipao, she had it completed by the next day. Sylvia has a huge selection of ready-to-wear qipaos of all colors and sizes. I had a specific type of design in mind for my wedding qipao and was expecting to get one custom-made, but I was pleasantly surprised to find one hanging on the rack that was similar enough and for a relatively low price! I briefly looked at a few others too, and she was very open and honest about the pros and cons of each dress (as well as the prices) without pressuring me toward the more expensive items. In any case, I went to try on the qipao and the size she picked out fit me well with some adjustments. And since there weren't any other customers in the shop at the time, she simply went downstairs and made the alterations while I waited! Was definitely not expecting that and am super appreciative as I had to travel 3 hours to get to Flushing. The whole process was so much faster and easier than I'd anticipated! read more
