Please please PLEASE don't sleep on this place. They have a rotating menu, and everything is farm to table. It's super fresh and very unique flavors in the dreamiest venue. To start - this place is an old barn!!! So sweet and quaint. They even have a heated outdoor patio that was so cozy and would seem like the perfect place for a date night. I came here on a busy Saturday night with some girlfriends and we basically ate through the menu! Since it was my first time (my friends had gone before), they let me choose all the apps. So I chose EVERYTHING and it was ALL delicious. Like, nothing was NOT good. For an entree, I had the Michigan walleye and the purple rice was just *chefs kiss*. Visited last evening for the first time and was immediately impressed by the restaurant's setting and seating options. We were greeted by an enthusiastic waiter and it felt like we're were about to have an exceptional evening. But then the experience turned. In summary, the food was disappointing. Began with the potato and chive soup which was too salty. The chives were raw and the potato skins - well- have no idea what the point was. The bowl looked pretty but that's about it. Two guests ordered the whitefish. Wish I had. I ordered the trout dish. I have nothing good to say. The rice accompanying the fish was dry and tasted like someone had a heavy hand with the use of cumin. There was no vegetable on the dish unless you count two sprigs of an unnecessary something ? We finished off the experience trying to find something to celebrate. Ordered the strawberry shortcake. I enjoyed the chantilly cream. Visually -the dessert was a mess. Instead of cake, a salty doughy biscuit was offered. The lack of actual strawberries was very noticeable. Overall- one more fail for this first and last time visitor. Recently had a wonderful evening here. Everything from the cocktails to the bread service to our entrees was delicious! You could tell a lot of thought and intention went into every ingredient in every dish. Exceptional service and unique atmosphere, too. I probably won't frequent this place due to the price range (4 drinks, bread service, 2 entrees, and 2 sides came in at $185 before tip), but will certainly keep it in mind for special occasions. With their wood fired pizza ovens, I would love to see a variety of unique/seasonal wood fired pizzas on the menu at a lower price point. read more

Our experience was not as good as the first time we were there (which was over the summer and really great). This time, however, our waitress was extremely slow. It took forever for her to come over and then even bring us our drinks. We ordered chicken under a brick, which was unfortunately pretty over cooked, and the pancetta pappardelle, which was too al dente. It's no surprise that the second glass of wine we ordered took a long time too. The waitress also didn't bring us the amuse Bouche until we asked about it because it was on the bill. And even then it wasn't like "oh sorry I forgot to bring that to you." It also wasn't super busy at the time we were there. This is one of those interesting experiences that proves beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We went as part of a group of 8 people. Right from the jump, preference and perspective were in evidence. The restaurant interior looked beautiful and inviting to me; others decided it would be great to sit outside, close to the garden. We were promptly seated outside, and most of the group loved it. I was sitting with my back to the garden and spent the entire meal swatting away gnats and being bitten by "noseeums" and flies. The drinks came next. Some ordered wine, and the pour did look less than 6 ounces, but the size of the glass could be at fault there. My wife asked for the Strawberry Cocktail in a tall glass with ice--for some reason served in a rocks glass, but very good. Meanwhile my Margarita was blah, and served in a Collins glass. Drinks were a mix of ok and good overall but the glassware selection is a serious detraction. Really need to rethink the glasses. The food was generally good, with a couple notable exceptions. Leading off was an "amuse bouche" of half a cherry tomato. I am attaching a pic. Seriously just a plain, unadorned, unseasoned half a tiny cherry tomato. My bouche was not amused. Luckily the bread service is very good and so is the flatbread. The bone marrow was a huge hit with the table and you should definitely get it. Mains offered good vareity. The Lamb was a big hit, as were the Chicken and the Whitefish. Special props for having truly local fish to complement the farm to table concept. Sadly the worst of the mains was the tasteless Trout. The Pasta was good though. Desert, again, highly subjective. Some loved the Brie (yes brie like the cheese) ice cream with the maple cake. Didn't work for me. Strawberry shortcake I thought was great, but others called the biscuits dry, overcooked and bisquixy. This restaurant is on a lot of "Top New Restaurant" and "Best in Detroit" lists. To me it is not as good as any number of places in Birmingham alone. I would pick Hyde Park, Bella Piatti and others over Sylvan Table easily. Dining excellence is in the taste of the diner. I am strongly tempted the give Sylvan Table only 3 stars, I would really give it 3.5 if I could, but .....that's only because it delivered less than it's lofty ratings. So OK 4 (but the lowest 4 possible). read more

I always love Sylvan Table but we just finished a great meal with Madison as our serve. She was so lovely and personable. She helped with dietary allergies and was just great. It started off wonderful. The grounds are beautiful and the atmosphere inside is a delight. The kitchen is surprisingly quiet even when dining directly next to the food service. The service started out great and attentive. Good was drinks and appetizers were nice. But once dinner was served we were forgotten about. We waited 15 minutes after our plates were cleared to be offered another drink or dessert. We did order 2 nightcaps and the. She dropped the check. We sat another 20 mi utes with empty drinks and a credit card down, before we flagged down another employee to take up our bill. We could have just walked out an no one would have known. This place was not busy for an early dinner on a Thursday and our waitress completely forgot about us. Disappointing and would have ordered more and tipped more than 20% had we gotten a bit more attention. Shame that it turned out the way it did, but we still enjoyed the company and atmosphere. read more

Saw a review/recommendation of this place back in the fall. The review recommended booking as far out as you could, since it books you fast--highly agree! (I think they book 6 weeks out?) I booked our Valentine's dinner back in January, and was so glad I did. What a great spot for dinner w my sweetheart. We started w the Bread Service which is delicious! The fresh load of bread comes with three types of butter: plain butter, red pepper butter, and a third flavor I can't remember. For our main courses I tried the Center-Cut-Rib-Eye and my husband tried the Pozole. It sounds silly to say I didn't like how peppery the meat was (since it's advertised as peppercorn crusted), but it was a little too peppery for my taste. I trimmed off the outer crust and then enjoyed my perfectly cooked steak. I really liked the fingerling potatoes and red cabbage, but wish they gave more of those two items. My husband loved his Pozole, and my husband is not a foodie at all, so when he goes on about how good something is and that'd he definitely order it again, it's good! The Pozole wasn't my cup of tea, but I was happy my husband enjoyed it. We also ordered the Root Vegetable Dauphinoise which was honestly my favorite thing of the whole menu! It was a generous portion that I was glad to eat as leftovers the next day too! Drink: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the French Old Fashioned--many thanks to our server, Whitney, for recommending that! My fiancé and I wanted to try this place because we thought maybe we wanted to host an event at the space. Food was just okay. The service was top notch. The drinks were fabulous. The place its self is beautiful. Bee sting flatbread appetizer was the start of the show. Ordered braised rabbit and ribeye for entrees with mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts, and parsnips to share as sides. The entrees and sides were nicely plated and yet slightly bland. I've been meaning to post a review for Sylvan Table but I think it's finally time. We had been waiting to try this place for literal months but it was always fully booked out (a month or more in advance). We were lucky enough to snag a last minute reservation on a Sunday night the first time we went. Since then, we've gone back numerous times and taken friends/family. Today we went for our first brunch experience there. I have to say Sylvan Table is something really special. The atmosphere is great and the servers are always super friendly, helpful, and attentive. The food is fresh, creative, beautiful, and flavorful. Dinner services have been exceptional and I have to say brunch absolutely did not disappoint. I hope it becomes at least a semi-regular occurrence. My duck and potatoes this morning were incredible and the grits were absolutely DIVINE. The duck dish came with a side of fresh toast that was so delicious we decided to ask if we could buy a loaf to take home. They were kind enough to oblige and we have fresh bread this week! If you get the opportunity to go to Sylvan Table, I'd fully recommend doing so. While it's not prohibitively expensive, I'd definitely plan on spending some money when you're there. We came here on a Sunday in September to celebrate our wedding anniversary. First off, what a BEAUTIFUL setting. We sat on the patio and it was just beyond lovely to be surrounded by all the gorgeous greenery, flowers, and accent lighting. They have a really great little grassy area next to the patio with some lawn games and such, too. The perfect place to spend an afternoon with some friends on a nice day. It's a working farm so much of what's grown here ends up on your plate. As such, their menu changes regularly based on what's growing at that time so you may not see what's described here upon your visit. But rest assured, everything was delicious. We started with a couple of cocktails and then went for a platter of charcuterie and cheese which was an excellent starter. For our mains we both went for the steak, which was tender, well seasoned, and super juicy. For our sides we went for the mashed potatoes (SO SO good) and the seasonal corn. For dessert we went with the ice cream flight and the apple and paw paw puff. I came to realize that I might not be the biggest fan of paw paw but the rest of the dessert was excellent. Speaking of excellent, THE SERVICE! Our waitress was incredible. Very kind, had great suggestions, and was extremely personable. I wish I remembered her name to give her a shout out. she was awesome. In fact, everyone we encountered was great. Inside the huge barn is a beautiful indoor restaurant. I took a peek when using the restroom inside and it's lovely. I was blown away by sylvan table, in the best way. The building is a refurbished barn with a garden on site and outdoor seating. It is just beautiful and I would love to sit outside on a day that isn't so hot. I believe they have a rotating menu. They started us off with an amuse bouche- cucumber with blueberry sauce. My friend and I ordered the green beans, mushroom risotto, steak and braised lamb. The braised lamb was one of the best entrees I've ever had and was paired perfectly with the spring peas and skordalia?. It was just the right amount of salty, savory and sweet. My friend really enjoyed the steak as well. We found the risotto a little bit bland but liked the lemony green beans. The decor is really pretty, I want to sit in their "sunroom" next time I visit. The bar is also full stock. Let's get to the food, know that the menu is always changing. We got lamb, lions mane mushroom, fiddlehead, potatoes, & grilled trout. The food tasted fresh & delicious. Just me, but I would've liked a little salt for the fiddleheads, felt a little plain. The star of the night, or most surprising, lions mane dish. I'm so glad I took the leap to try this mushrooms. It's so good, I was hesitant bc it might be a weird texture, but it wasn't. The food was amazing, the ambiance was perfect, and the evening was an amazing gathering for friends and family. TLDR: The real housewives and husbands of OC are vicious. Super cutthroat - not a good/chill vibe.... Food is mediocre. I stopped by here yesterday while visiting Michigan for a wedding. Homemade pasta is nice though Chicken - 3 was good but not memorable. The ambiance was nice but .... few things. 1) Our food all came out at once, but they were cooked at different times, so our fettuccini was cold 2) This place is really popular so I never felt like I could relax. People who come here are super cutthroat hawking for seats, and just overall, the vibe was not great.  Bartenders seemed overworked, and management is letting people do battle royale for seats Ex: 1 while I was there, a man and a woman shouted at two ladies, accusing them of taking their seats.. (the ladies didn't even want the seats) the ladies were shaken by it. ex:2 Before we were done leaving a woman came by and asked if the seat was open (my GF had gone to the bathroom); I was polite and said we are finishing up... and then the lady even put her jacket on the seat, saying she wanted to save that seat before other people take it. Finally visited this super hyped farm to table restaurant and for the most part it lived up to our expectations. I love that they have a working farm and encorporate that into the meals. They even have bees that produce honey on site. We ordered chicken, lamb and trout. Everything was fresh and delicious. I wish the plates had more veggies and sides. You can order veggies to share but we couldnt agree and I didnt want stuff to go to waste so we ended up ordering just one side. I think if the sides were part of the meal or at least individual I would have enjoyed the meal more. The food did take a while to come out but they sent us a sample of celary soup, which I thought was a nice touch. I did order fingerling potatoes, which were fried in duck fat and might have been the best part of my meal. However since the rest of my party did not want carbs, I left half of them. Opened at 5pm. It's not even 5:30pm and there's a 45 minute walk-up wait for the patio. The inside is booked until 9pm. The bar is also currently full too. They have only been open a month. We put in our name for the balcony. Sitting at a waiting area by the fireplace. Only can get drinks and apps until we wait for a table. We snagged seats at the bar. We ordered the campagnolo, 2 field green salads, mushrooms, chicken under a brick and scallops. We were on deck for a patio seat 40 minutes in, but since we ordered our main meal at the bar, we were stuck at the bar, not so cool. They could have told us that before ordering due to hunger. We could move to the patio with apps and drinks only. They brought us a scallop ceviche starter, it was okay. The waitress told us they lemon helps to cook the scallops some. We watched this guy and woman behind the bar empty the Tupperware of sangria into the glass jar. They were using the top of the Tupperware lid to keep the apples and fruit from dumping into the jar. All fine, but instead of using the inside top of the lid to keep the fruit back from flowing in, they used the topside or outside part of the lid to keep the fruit from going into the jar. Not so sanitary since the outside lid would be where staff hands would be touching the container. We can see the chicken turning over the giant fireplace in the front room. The campagnolo is yummy. The ricotta spread is light and slightly sweet. The hummus is interesting. The ricotta spread on the warm flat bread is fantastic. The field green salads were good. Nice blend of greens, maybe from their garden. The main food is taking a while. The brick chicken was piping hot. It wasn't bad. The beans were also hot. The mushrooms were okay, chewy and maybe slightly over cooked. The scallops are small, not a problem. My husband and I ate the first two scallops. They were cold, not even luke warm at all. The zucchini, spinach and the scallops were also cold. Really? The bartender asked how our food was. I asked if my dish was supposed to all be cold. She said not at all. She took back the remainder of my dish and had the kitchen reheat my food. Meh. It was warmer and not over cooked when I got it back. I ordered the goat cheese pie for dessert. It wasn't as good as I had hoped, it wasn't bad, just so-so. It definitely wasn't carb worthy. The staff here are all wonderful, warm, so friendly, attentive and welcoming. read more

Tried Sylvan Table for the first time and it was a great experience! I was beyond impressed primarily by the location, ambiance and wonderful service. I can't say kind enough things about our server who was super attentive and friendly. We enjoyed our meals as well. It was honestly so difficult to decide because everything sounded so good but I eventually settled on the "Roasted in the Solarium" special which was a duck dish with a side of wild rice on our visit. It was very tasty but a bit tough and dry unfortunately. We got the duck fat potatoes as a side and those were delicious! I ordered a Negroni for my drink and that was also good. Not my type of food. I feel they work very hard but they don't have any normal dishes that are simple. I love the farm to table concept. I had the pork belly and I wish it wasn't so full of fat. (I know this where the taste comes from!). The wait staff was extremely professional and obviously well-trained. The atmosphere was wonderful with the log fires burning and the pleasant live music on Monday. The building is beautiful as well. Add some classic simple dishes and I will come back. Loved everything about this restaurant and am excited to eat here again soon. I went with a group of friends and we shared everything from the sides and appetizers to the entrees and desserts. This way we got to try a good portion of the farm to table menu. The ambience is incredible, rustic barn mixed with lots of natural light and greenery. The service was amazing -- just the right amount of attention and a super knowledgeable server. But most of all the food was fresh, unique and delicious. Eek...sorry that I don't agree with the others. Frankly I have perhaps the wrong diet for this type of food. But farm to table, they should have vegetables, right? I struggle to find something appealing that is vegan here. For a long time my friends wanted to go here when it was new and popular - so we came several several times. Here are the cons in my view: Very loud Not comfortable seating - the bench that seemingly I've sat at many times is too short for normal legs. So you feel like you're hanging off Strange menu - maybe better if you share with friends Small portions/expensive Unpleasant staff - I've had issues with my meal and they were not moved to make the situation right. I was flat out missing a meal at one time, and then had to ask them to just remove it from my bill. I just don't get it. I'd never chose to come here. read more

This was my first time at the Sylvan Table. My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary, my friend suggested the Sylvan Table. After checking their website, I decided to reserve a table for our night. The restaurant's barn structure and gardens were very impressive. It is a very cool setting, tucked away in a corner of a residential area. I have been past the street on Orchard Lake Road multiple times and had no idea it was there. We were greeted by a friendly hostess, and congratulated on our anniversary upon arrival. Our waitress was very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered drinks and the bread service. Both came out very quickly and the drinks were served in excellent glasses. We both ordered fish for our entrées, whitefish and trout. We were somewhat surprised that no salads were on the menu or provided before the main entrée. This is really our only complaint about the restaurant, it seems like it would be appropriate for a salad to come along with the entrée for the price that was being charged. My trout was blackened and served over ratatouille. It was one of the best pieces of fish that I have ever had, the rosemary that was talked inside of the fish when cooking permeated the meat, giving it to one of a kind taste. My wife ordered the white fish and enjoyed her meal as well, but was less impressed with what the fish was served on top of (some kind of capers or beans I believe). The waitress came back to check on us multiple times, even cleaning crumbs from the table after the bread service. There were some house flies in the window area we dined in that were very annoying. I'm wondering if someone should've used a flyswatter before opening the restaurant to limit them or if they came in with gas when the doors opened? Either way it distracted a bit from the beautiful setting. We decided to hold off on dessert. And just finished our drinks. The waitress congratulated us on our anniversary and did serve us complementary champagne. She also gave us a card signed by multiple people in the restaurant, this was really unexpected and a very nice touch. I will definitely come back to the Sylvan table. We headed over to Rochester to see what food options we had for dinner. After walking up and down the small strip we decided to head elsewhere. Sylvan Table had been on my radar so we thought we would give it a try. We didn't know reservations were a must when stopping in but they were very accommodating with setting up a table in the outdoor tent. It was about a 20 minute wait which we were more than ok with. We did need to eat with our coats on since there were only a few heaters and had to ask the waiter if he could move one closer which of course he didn't mind doing. Next time we will come prepared and make reservations to sit inside because it is so warm, lively and cozy. We both ordered the Deckle Steak with chimichurri on top with a side of brussel sprouts. The steak was so buttery, not too fatty, and there was a good amount of chimichurri to go with the steak. We have been wanting to go back ever since but it is quite the drive for us. The six of us ladies who try new places together waited a couple months to get in before 8:30. It was well worth the wait. They brought us cocktails in the small lounge area by the retail section. The bar was full. Once seated water was poured and a couple bottles were left on the table. Our server got the remaining drink orders, and appetizers were requested. It took longer for the drinks to come to the table than the apps. I had oysters and loved the slaw topping. So fresh and crisp. The ribeye was cooked to perfection. We ordered and shared many sides. Does the phrase "were you born in a barn?" Mean anything? Well you might not be born in a barn, but you will be born again in this barn style restaurant! The cattle get a little restless around dinner time, but ol pappy McGee knows when to put out to pasture. The Chickens get in the way, and the pigs are just plain snobby, but once you get used to the ambiance it's worth the trip. Delicious. Unique. Comped our appetizers because they were slightly late getting us in for our reservations. That was a nice touch and not necessary. Madison was a terrific server. so sweet and just attentive enough. Will come back in the summer for a full experience. I got the table to try bone marrow. I considered that a success. We all had our favorite item. Mine was the bone marrow and the cabbage shareable. Others loved the mashed potatoes. All our entrees and other items were yummy. Shared all the desserts. After hearing lots of amazing things about this farm to table restaurant, we checked it out. The service was good, and the vibes were pleasant. We loved walking around the grounds seeing the various gardens and living roof area. The food was okay. The fact this restaurant only has a 4.2 is criminal. My Fiancée and I came here for our anniversary dinner and frankly were blown away. The staff was kind yet personable, and the environment was one of the most unique I have seen in southern Michigan. Finally, our food surpassed our expectations for what midwestern food could be.
