Outstanding restaurant and experience. In June, we had a family celebration in a comparably priced place in Clarkston, but Sylvan Table edged them out. The food just had a touch more creativity, more flavor and originality. I had the glazed pork chop - so, so good. The pork was not overcooked but the glaze clung to it. My companion had the walleye, and although she does not normally order fish she raved, saying that it was perfectly cooked. And at the end of the meal (since I had admitted that this was my birthday), my dessert came with a lit birthday candle and a birthday card signed by what looked like most of the staff (16 signatures including the chef). We were really looking forward to a special night out at Sylvan Table after hearing such good things about it. It was very enjoyable, but missed the mark in a few areas for me. The setting is really pretty. Although it is right off of a busy road, it is wooded and tranquil. We loved how the outdoor patio overlooks the gardens. Tip: wear insect repellent if you have a patio reservation. I was surprised by a somewhat rude hostess and that our server, while full of personality, had to be flagged down for simple things like salt/pepper for the table. I think for the prices, the service could be more polished and attentive. On to the food. They bill themselves as farm to table, yet my fish entree came with potatoes only and no vegetables. Odd. Fish was cooked very well and the peri peri meatballs appetizer was fantastic (look out for that chili oil!) The menu is fairly brief, and a vegetarian may have a tough time here. Looks to have a very lively bar scene and the indoor seating is in a beautiful rustic barn. The bourbon cocktail I ordered was very bourbon forward. Food was amazing! With the menu that constantly changes however, it's good to go with the flow. We ordered quite a few side dishes, and two of them needed more practice. The mushrooms were very salty, and the squash was undercooked. The chef was very receptive, however, and offered a free dessert. Came with family members who live in the area. Now don't get me wrong, the food was absolutely phenomenal. Very high priced and very limited options, but the quality was excellent. Probably one of the best meals I've ever had. I was just expecting the staff to match the high end experience. They were just ok. Having read reviews beforehand, I knew the restaurant was truly farm-to-table in an old barn. Would have loved to hear that directly from the staff when we mentioned we haven't been before. My husband had to ask for a soda refill and the whole table had to ask for water refills more than once. The fireplace in the sunroom/greenhouse seating area is very cozy. The foods and drinks were spectacular. Using seasonal and local produce and ingredients, the menu changes based on what's available or abundant. The farm to table approach and commitment to zero food waste is amazing. Tonight my daughter was visiting from North Carolina, and we went to Sylvan Table, one of our favorite restaurants. The Peri-Peri Meatballs and Miso Glazed Mushrooms were standouts, and we finished with the Clafoutis and a Sea Salt Maple Espresso Martini for dessert. All amazing! What really made the evening special, though, was our server, Kevin. He was extremely personable and professional, giving us just the right amount of space to enjoy our conversation while still being attentive whenever we needed him. We were seated quickly, the ambience was spacious yet cozy, the personnel were friendly, and professional with perfect timing throughout the evening (thank you Emily). The food was also perfect. Our only regret was we were too full to keep ordering different entrées. The open kitchen allow us wonderful opportunities to see the perfection coming together from the whole team behind the line. Hubby booked this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. They were nice upon arrival and wished us a happy anniversary. But nothing else special about it. The atmosphere is nice. Open kitchen concept so customers can see the cooks and servers while food is being prepared. I love this vibe! There was a beautiful fireplace but we were seating kind of far away from it so didn't get to enjoy it or feel it. Bar is very nice kind of in the middle of the restaurant. Live music was being played in another part of the restaurant. The menu has a couple of options. Not a big menu probably being a farm to table and having a specialized menu. Was really wishing for a steak, like filet, at a place like this. Meals don't come with sides so must get them a la carte. Drinks are on the pricey side, around $18 each. They are good but reminds me on downtown Detroit or city prices but in the suburb prices. Nothing fancy about the drinks just seasonal so that's probably all the hype around them. Food was good and tasted fresh. Chicken dinner was app. $30 plus $ to add side of mashed potatoes. Just not sure it was worth the price. The waiter was nice on the quiet side and only came around when he noticed something was needed. $200+ tip for chicken, rabbit, mashed potatoes, gizzards and 4 drinks. What a wonderfully charming location! Located on 5 acres of land this charming dinner spot provides farm to table food in a barn that's made with 300-year-old beams. They have a huge garden area that you can view outside and they have a large outdoor seating area with heaters so even on a cooler night it provides comfortable dining experience. We were seated inside and were a party of six. It was a little tight at the table because we were right up against the wall, so there was very little room for our table chairs to go. We tried the stuffed peppers and the bread service as a starter and they were both delicious. For my main entrée, I had the chicken. It was moist and seasoned perfectly. My husband and I attended the tiki dinner event. We made reservations about 6 weeks in advance. Hoping this is an annual event! This was our first time to Sylvan Table so my review will pertain to the event versus the restaurant experience. The tiki dinner was outside near the barn. We were seated at communal tables. Love how we were greeted with a lei. My husband and I showed up in Hawaiian clothes too! Our five course dinner (really 7 courses) with 5 cocktails (mocktails were an option too) was incredible! I knew we were getting 5 courses, but the 5 cocktails was a surprise! I tried all the drinks but couldn't finish the last two. The Aloe-ha Spritz was so refreshing. One of my favorites! The night was so great. Each meal came out with a cocktail pairing. We had live music throughout dinner too. At the end of the night, we were surprised with fire dancers! Pretty incredible! I ordered the sea bass and the waitress was nice and warned me it comes with the face, and even though I don't care if the fish has the face or not, it's nice that they were sensitive to those who may not like that. My husband and I came here today for the first time, his birthday is tomorrow. We lucked out and got a reservation also today, I don't know if they opened up reservations late or something or just a slew of them opened up, but I grabbed a 6:15 p.m. one. Our waiter was Ian and he was very personable. We were seated at a table next to the kitchen, they have an open kitchen so it was pretty interesting to see. I do think next time I would have preferred sitting in the atrium-type area near the back of the restaurant but it was fun to see them work. We ordered: -Sylvan 75 for my husband -NA hibiscus drink for me, because I'm pregnant. Kind of expensive, $14, but with a sugar rim, and very tasty. -Asparagus. This was the only miss of the night for me, mostly because of the red pepper flakes making it a little spicy. -Mushrooms. Very tasty -Cavatelli - I was leaning towards getting the ribeye or pork but my husband suggested this, and I was glad he did because I really liked it. I'm pretty sure they make the pasta in-house and you can tell. -Lamb sausage. This was my husband's dish and he really enjoyed it as well. -Sundae. Again a little pricey, $12, but the strawberry syrup was great and they brought out a little candle for him as well. Overall I would definitely come back here, I would probably give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. They have a little outdoor area where you can eat also, there was a party there tonight though. (Outdoors but insulated) The one thing to be aware of is there is a 3% credit card fee. They are very transparent about this, it's posted on their reservation page and also around the restaurant, so we brought cash to use. It does irk me a bit when fine dining places do this, though. Every single time I've come here over the years it's been consistently delicious and wonderful service and atmosphere. We have closed out the restaurant repeatedly and they did not ever bother us. I had a lovely experience as a first time guest at Sylvan Table. It's highly recommended to have a reservation- unfortunately we weren't able to get one, so we got there right when they opened to grab some bar seating. Even these fill up quickly! The bar staff was so lively and had great recommendations. They change their menu every few weeks. We were told they use a lot of vegetables grown from their garden and they also have a pastry chef on site. We ordered the bread service and kale caesar for starters. The bread is currently "orange ricotta". It was the perfect texture. I'll have to say the orange was notable and it didn't taste quite right to me because of that (I'm not an orange fan- so I could have anticipated this). The kale salad was outstanding. It had white anchovies, which put together the salad. For entree I had the pork chop. I was able to sub broccolini instead of potatoes. The broccolini was perfect! The pork chop was thick and moist. It could have boasted a little more flavor to me- would have been great with some sort of sauce. My family had the chicken and the short rib. They both enjoyed theirs and from the bites I had- were also great. The star of the night was the hazelnut baked Alaska. I've never been blessed to eat this dish, but I'm so glad to have gotten it here. Hazelnut was the perfect flavoring for this! I reviewed the menu before arriving and was a little concerned about the prices but it was worth every dollar. Hidden just out of site is a charming restaurant that is so much more than just a restaurant. It's an experience. Waze was instrumental in finding this hidden gem as it's tucked behind a fairly blah stretch of Orchard Lake Road. Turn down what is basically a residential street and Sylvan Table appears like a rustic Phoenix! TS saw my eyes light up as I soaked it all in. The owners have moved an antique Maine barn to Sylvan Lake Michigan and created a beautiful (if a bit barren and cold in December) oasis. The inside is as inviting as the outside with a beautiful space buzzing with activity on a cold December night. A Roaring fireplace and beautiful Christmas decor set the stage for a wonderful evening. We were seated upstairs at a nice corner table and the super friendly server was there in a flash to take our drink order. I had my usual, Grey Goose Martini on the rocks with bco's, TS opted for a house Pinot Grigio. Both hit the spot taking the chill off and were delicious. Our server went over some specials, and the menu had a varied selection of great sounding entrees. We started with a charcuterie board with their own house made crackers, cheeses and meats including a decadent pate'. And as an added bonus we were brought a few roasted brussel sprouts with cranberry chutney, fantastic! For our main course TS opted for the pork chop with root vegetables and I had the roasted chicken with the same sides. Both were delicious and juicy being cooked over a wood fire! Now Sylvan Table is a farm to table restaurant which could be daunting on a long cold Michigan winter. And part of the farm must be on their 5 acres. I bet those root vegetables were picked and stored on site for use all winter just like an old timey farm. Ee ate like we hadca tip on a famine and washed it down with a big bold red. But there was still room for more. For dessert we split a slice of Buche Noel and some coffee. The dessert was a work of art. As we made our way out we realized we were the last ones there. So after a picture in front of the Christmas tree we were gone. All in a magical experience with food, service and ambiance that can't be beat. And the company, well that goes without saying! We came here around 5:00 on a Saturday for my husbands birthday. We had a reservation for 5:15. We were a bit early but they sat us right away. This is a farm to table experience and we walked around the farm for a few minutes before going inside. We saw a staff member outside picking flowers and herbs, which we then recognized on our plates which was pretty cool. We started with some drinks and the bread service. The bread of the day was a pepper Parmesan loaf. It came with three butters (salted, butternut squash, and cinnamon honey). The bread was fantastic! It was warm and crunchy on the outside but light and fluffy on the inside. We next got main dishes. I got the chicken under a brick and I think it was the best chicken I have ever had. It was so moist and tender with good flavor. My mom got the ribs and got a fatty piece and they switched it out for the chicken. The guys both got the rainbow trout and loved it. We also got some shareable sides: mashed potato, beets, Brussels sprouts, and mushroom risotto. They were all delicious but my favorite was the mashed potatoes! After dinner they brought a hand signed birthday card for my husband with a candle (just in a dish, not with a dessert which we thought was a little weird). Overall we had a great time! A beautiful place inside and out. We visited for the first time on a Snowy Saturday evening and were happy to see the warm cozy wooden interiors including an extensive bar sitting and fireplace. We had reservations and were seated immediately on arrival. It was Valentine week and the place was quite packed. Our servers were all very informative, made sure to ask us about allergies, gave us a disclaimer when we ordered a trout, which comes in one piece, and seemed proud of their farm to table and locally sourced set up. For drinks we ordered "put in on your pipe" whiskey cocktail and curious elixir 2. While the whiskey was great, the elixir seemed more of an acquired taste and I didn't enjoy it much. In dinner , we ordered bread of the day which was sourdough and came with 3 flavors of butter - plain salted, rutabaga and grape- all very subtle yet flavorful; roasted cabbage- perfectly charred though a little more sweet for my taste, and eagle creek rainbow trout which my friend found amazing. I was looking for some more savory main-course options in vegetarian but the current menu selection didn't have any to my liking. Nevertheless we were advised that the menu changes every 2 weeks or so based on what is currently growing in the farms. A friend and I had dinner reservations here at 7:15pm. We arrived a couple minutes early and were told we'd be seated shortly. We enjoyed the live entertainment for a while and chatted by the bar. After 40 minutes, we were seated upstairs in one of the dining areas. We didn't put in our order until almost 8pm. They close at 9pm. We ordered a bunch of different things to try. I love and appreciate the farm-to-table focus and sustainability efforts! We couldn't wait to try. We ordered the Bread Service appetizer to start. It's made fresh in-house, comes out soft and warm, and tastes yummy. The flavored butter was a nice compliment to the bread. It was one of the simplest items we ordered, but one of the best. The New York Strip was perfectly cooked medium and sat in a bed of greens, with potatoes on the side. The potatoes were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. They were delicious. The mashed potatoes we ordered on the side were just okay, nothing special. We tried the Roasted Golden Beets with goat cheese. It was so good and a must try! Lastly, we got the Peach Clafoutis for dessert. It wasn't overly sweet and had a nice, balanced flavor. The consistency was a bit soggy but still tasted great. Overall the food was delicious, servers were wonderful, beautiful restaurant, great ambiance. The only complaint were the delays. First at the beginning and then throughout dinner for our meal. Otherwise, I would love to come back on an evening that isn't as busy and try it again! It's definitely worth revisiting. read more
