Laurel is AMAZING. I have always had a tough time with hair cuts, but after seeing Laurel I can honestly say it was the best experience I have ever had. I have very fine hair, but a lot of it, which has made it difficult to cut in the past. I also have semi-wavy hair, resulting in cowlicks, weird flips, etc. However, Laurel handled it in the best way possible. I went in for a trim, but also decided to have bangs cut for the first time. Laurel completely understood what I wanted and how to work with my hair. I don't usually style my hair or have time to fully dry it in the mornings, and my cut from Laurel has been perfect for this low maintenance routine. She didn't try to straighten it with a flat iron or add any unnecessary products. She just put some *amazing-smelling* frizz control in it and dried it. Laurel has given me 3 amazing haircuts in the past year, despite the fact that I basically give no usable instructions every time I come in. Laurel is probably the best stylist I have come across. My hair is pretty coarse, thick and wavy, but she painstakingly perfects my cut every single time. For the last 4-5 visits, Laurel has given me a different cut, with consistently great results. She is personable, friendly and listens to your needs. I think it's hard to find a good stylist, and because of this, I drive to Swing from the Eastside just for her services. I've been going to Lacey Card for a few years now and was so happy to find that she was moving to Swing! It's right around the corner from my house, and it seems to be a really good fit for her. I have kept generally the same hair cut forever, but Lacey's coloring techniques have always surpassed anyone I've ever gone to. I discovered Laurel by chance when I was trying to find a hairdresser closer to where I live. I read a number of glowing reviews for her from people with fine and/or blonde hair and decided to give her a shot. I'm so glad I did. I came in for a partial foil and haircut. I wasn't ready to do anything drastic for this appointment, but we talked a lot about giving me a chic, sixties-inspired bob, and honestly I can't wait to go back to her in a couple months and let her execute her vision. She listened to to what I wanted and was very thorough in both coloring and cutting my hair. Honestly the partial foil she did was one of the best foils I've ever had. The color turned out perfect. I love the cut too, but wish I had been brave enough to let her take off some more length...next time! Laurel is a joy to get to know and I would highly recommend her to anyone. read more

I first saw Laurel a few months back and got a killer cut that was everything I didn't know I wanted. Since then I have been back for highlights and to keep this cut looking fresh. So this review is really about Laurel. I've only visited Swing once, but I followed her there from her last salon. I was impulsive recently and let someone else cut my hair (very thick, long, with a grey streak at the top of my head). I don't like much in the way of thinning, layering, or chopping. I like and look best in very classic cuts. While my hair has plenty of body, it doesn't style easily, and I refuse to get a cut that requires me to use product. Ok, so I'm picky. Fine. I should have realized long ago that being impulsive for me was a dumb idea, but I did it. I had a stranger cut my hair when I didn't have my contacts on and had taken my glasses off. And I forgot to give her my lecture about my likes, etc. So, this other woman (not Laurel) started ripping into my hair. Before I knew it, I looked like David Cassidy. So I called Laurel, left a message over the holidays. She called me back from her vacation and asked lots of questions about what my hair looked like. It was clear she remembered me very well - she remembered where my cowlicks are!!! And she remembered my taste in haircuts. She advised me to wait until she got back from her trip, saying that the couple of weeks would allow the shock to settle down and give her more to work with. So, several things about Laurel. She takes her time. You will not be rushed. If you are in a rush, be clear ahead of time. She will go over what you want in detail. No hair stylist is a mind reader - you have a picture in your head of what you want, and they can't see that. Pictures of models are fine, but whose face and hair match those in the picture? Anyway, she asks detailed questions about what you want, how your hair works, and how you like to work with it. And you go from there. In taking her time, she's sure not to make any drastic moves she can't undo. She's fine if you're honest with her if you don't like her suggestions - something that can be awkward with some stylists. Add to all that the fact that she is a super sweet, interesting, and genuinely caring person. She also colors and cuts my 22 year old daughter's hair. Again, she remembered just what she had done to her hair and asked in advance what colors, etc, she should have ready. My daughter, whose tastes and needs are very different from my 49 year old self, walks away just as happy. Cost is perfectly reasonable, and the quality is fantastic, and she even encourages me to call for a free touch up as we attempt to fix my hair. She really is a skilled hair stylist. Only one negative, and it's not about Laurel. I would suggest the shop owner put a little more effort into the look of the place - especially housekeeping. Nothing really wrong here and it won't stop me from returning, but getting your hair cut should be an all around treat, no? Or maybe that's my age talking. Yesterday I was David Cassidy, today I look like I belong in the year 2014, and soon enough (as my hair grows out and with Laurel's help) I will be myself again. I got a haircut here a while back. I liked that you could schedule online and everyone was nice. Although my haircut looked good there, after getting home and washing it I noticed that there were very obvious chunks and layers that didn't blend well. I could have gone back to get it fixed but didn't want to have to figure out the person's schedule since she wasn't in every day. Also, the credit card reader wasn't working and I barely had enough cash to pay, which was an inconvenience. Overall, my experience was not bad but not great either. read more

Swing is by far the best place I have EVER gotten my hair done The owner Eric Smiley is extremely talented and truly has a gift. His salon always has amazing worldly music playing in the background. There is also artwork on the walls from people Eric meets in his travels. The best part is that if you like this artwork, you can buy it! I met Laurel at Kismet Salon in Madrona last year and have since followed her to Swing because she knows exactly what I like! I have been returning to her every few months so she can maintain the amazingly chic bob that she gave me. Everyone constantly compliments me on it (one onlooker called it "the perfect bob!").
