We unfortunately had a solidly mediocre experience here. We walked in off the street because the place looked quaint and inviting. We were greeted and seated promptly. The place is very cozy with a lot of civil war memorabilia around. That's the good news. Now for the bad news. Our whole meal was underwhelming nearly to the point of disappointment. We ordered the Philly soft pretzel, Texas coney dog, and the slippery chicken pot pie. Everything took twice as long to come out as it should have. The pretzel was actually fantastic; hot, fresh, warm, and soft. Everything else was sad. Our other two dishes took nearly 30 minutes to arrive, and when they did, they were cold. Even if they weren't cold though, they still would have been royally disappointing. The "hot dog" was tough and crunchy. The pot pie had a mustardy taste to it. Both dishes definitely felt off, regardless of their temperature. Maybe we just got an off day, but this was definitely a subpar meal. read more

In between two antique buildings, Sweeney's tavern has an enchanted environment while preserving authenticity. The food was very very delicious. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals, though a bit on the pricey side. After ordering our food, a downpour started. With the outdoor seating, we were stuck getting soaking wet. Despite the heavy rain, our server (whose name I unfortunately did not catch) determinedly brought us our food and took extra care to keep it from getting wet. She also diligently brought us anything we requested. Wonderful service. An absolute must when visiting Gettysburg! After reading the other reviews, I was SHOCKED to see so many negative reviews. I was very hungry after a long day and then i walked into this place and sat down for a meal. It took at least 1 hour for my waiter to get through made up ghost stories before i walked through the entire kitchen to a small room with a buffet table. The buffet looked and smelled as old as the ghosts that haunt this place. It was not a good meal and looked like slop. Overall never come here unless you want to be scared to throw up later. And if you do come be warned of the famous ghost Walter that is as fake as the generous three stars this place has gotten. read more

Went to Gettysburg to go camping and was looking for a good cocktail. Located this gem online for their interesting cocktail menu. The establishment is on the main road, so when busy parking could be sort of hard to come by, we were there on a Saturday at about noon and got a spot right up front. They have such an adorable seating area outside with a walk-up bar. I had the frozen wine slushie with both flavors mixed, and it was outstanding. The bartenders were super nice and easy to talk to!! We were told, however, that the interesting drink menu was only inside, so after our 1st cocktail, we headed inside to sit at the bar. The menu had lots of fun drinks to pick from the two we got were pretty darn good, and the bartender again was so sweet. We also found out you can stay here and it's haunted so I diffently want to go back and stay and eat next time. read more

We stopped in on a gorgeous fall Wednesday (midweek is the best time to be in town). It is a nice open air location right off the street. It was seat yourself that day but I'd reason it's not that way peak season. We chose a little table next to water feature between the the tavern and the building next door. The menu was small but anyone could find something to eat on it. When you order you go to the bar which looks small but is full service and has a few local beers on tap and some bottled. My wife ordered the Cobb salad with a side of fries and I chose the crab cake sandwich. I ordered a troegs beer to drink and she ordered a frozen apple cider drink. Obviously it was made with apples from a local orchard, this is Adams county. Her frozen cider was amazing and we actually ordered two to go. My crab cake sandwich was decent but I'm kind of picky because I grew up in Delaware. We shared the fries which were good and she really enjoyed her salad which was a pretty good size. The bartender was funny and we had a good time chatting with him. I was debating a second drink when he said "the school is about to dismiss for the day and it's going to get loud and crazy outside so that's up to you". We stopped here on a weekend trip for lunch based on the menu and the history of the building. The inside tavern is very cool and has a lot of memorabilia around the restaurant. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The food was pretty good; we started with the crab pretzel which was delicious, would definitely recommend. Our table had the Lincoln salad which was just kind of bland and underwhelming and the only thing our table had that I wouldn't recommend. Highly recommend the bangers and mash, it was incredible. Not sure the reason for all the bad reviews as we had a great experience here. We came on Friday night and were seated fairly quickly but enjoyed great drinks and service at the bar while we waited. Absolutely loved the ambiance of the place, so much memorabilia to look at while you wait. I got the roast beef sandwich and it was delicious, the crispy onion straws on top was the perfect touch. Hubby got the french dip and really enjoyed it, the flatbread pizza our friend got was also delicious. Looking forward to coming back here when the weather is better, the strawberry lemonade mixed drink was delicious. My husband and I ate here the other night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We actually had a blast looking at all the Gettysburg movie props and he was watching the behind the scenes footage from the film while we waited for our food to come. He had the meatloaf, and I ate a piece and it was outstanding. I had myself a bullethole drink (quite appropriate given our location) and went with the peach flatbread and french onion soup as my dinner. The peaches were a little under ripe for my liking, but still tasty. Note you can't get the dinner meals until 5 pm. We were there at 4:15 so I was a little disappointed I couldn't try the game pie then, but guess we'll have to come back and try more food again! read more

Very cool very old tavern! Ambiance is great if you like historical venues, which we do! Get the pretzel with beer cheese dipping sauce! The best ever! I had a cheeseburger which was good without being outstanding. My husband had the bangers and mash which he said was good. So I guess if you are looking for a historical place for lunch/dinner this would be ok. P.S. On our visit there was one waitress covering the tables AND the bar! This place could be so much more. We were tourists in Gettysburg and were driving by and saw that they had a lovely shaded patio. We asked and found out that they're dog friendly which is great! So we brought or pooch after we parked in the back in their own parking lot which is super convenient if you don't happen to have money for the meters along the road. Outdoors on the patio you have to walk up to a booth and place your order. They serve some of the drinks like wine in a plastic cup which I found a little lacking of class but the wine was fine so we ordered food. The flatbread is really bad. Frozen pizza from the supermarket tastes better. It's doughy and not crispy and thin. So it tastes frozen and under-baked. It comes with plastic silverware that is super flimsy. It really was a letdown. Such a lovely space, with cool history on display. It's clean. But the food and the plastic cups and plastic silverware and the partial "self service" are just meh. Sorry. The onions were tough and the croutons were oversized and overpowered the soup. - Chicken pot pie had a great taste, but needed more chicken. The atmosphere is cool inside or outside, but the food was sub par. Any of the sandwiches if you get chips, you'll literally get a bag of cheap chips and for the price this is ridiculous. If you get the coleslaw, it's a tiny little container of it. Get the fries instead of chips or coleslaw for sure. If you have a bigger party then you might not want to stop inside here. By bigger I mean more than 3 people. We had 5 in our party and they barely had a spot for us. We were sat by the outside door as it was the only spot that could accommodate us. It was so dark in there so every time someone came in we were blinded by the bright light. It took a bit of time for our food to come out and it was barely warm. The food tasted good but it would have been great if it was hot or even warm. Our server left the bill and then never returned. They didn't even come back to take our payment. We had to track them down and then we were told they would have to come back to pick it up. read more

The Tavern's atmosphere was great. However, the food was disappointing. We ordered the PA Dutch Chicken Potpie. Its appearance was inviting. The waitress advised us that the container was hot. It was but its contents were only warm. The taste and texture was different due to the noodles. Our side orders were garden salad, corn and mashed potatoes. The outcome of the meal lead to both of us to GI illness through the night. Which caused us to have to extend our stay one additional day for the Gettysburg Battlefield tour, film and museum because we were not able to leave our hotel room. Historic home turned into restaurant and b&b. Pretty outdoor garden area with waterfalls and brick, foliage. The tavern menu is basically the same as the inn menu, only exception seems to be, the house also has steak, prime rib, and pork chops. Park in the rear. If you want to eat at the house, make sure you specifically ask or you might accidentally end up eating at the tavern, like we did. Ordered the crab cake sandwich as an appetizer. It was delicious, lots of crab meat, good flavor. Had a side salad, if you like sweet dressings, the house dressing is very tasty. I would have purchased a bottle to take home if I could/remembered. Unfortunately, dd didn't like the pulled pork sandwich. I thought it was ok, but not great. We ordered mac and cheese for dd instead and it was good, made with real cheddar. Dh loved his meatloaf, which is supposed to be one of their specialties. Our waitress Bonnie was friendly. Nice atmosphere with the outdoor garden area. Even though we were here on a Saturday and it was relatively busy, I wouldn't say we waited for an exorbitant amount of you'd like others complained of. The food here is pretty good and the atmosphere is cool. It's bar-food with a traditional twist. They have a small selection of vegetarian options and a good selection of local booze. Walked in to the tavern. Looks very cool, but have never seen a less enthusiastic staff in my life, anywhere. There were exactly 6 customers and we waited to be seated for 10 minutes. When a waitress, finally approached us we were told it would be 5 minutes because she needed to clear a table. 10 minutes later, no table cleared, no sign that we would actually be seated, so we left. I should have read these reviews before we entered. Avoid this place. Poor management. read more

Just spent 3 hours at the farnsworth house Tavern and had the absolute worst service EVER!!! After three hours to wait on sandwiches and a few drinks, then waiting another 30 min to have the checks split to only have them come back incorrect not once but twice. Spoke with the staff, no consideration but did threaten us and even attempted to start a physical altercation with a patron. We have been coming to this establishment for more than 25 years and we won't be back! Anyone thinking about visiting this place should think about eating somewhere else. The food came out wrong, drinks that were ordered that we ended up cancelling because of the wait were never put in to be made, and they even said, " I never even put it in".....what kind of service is that!? "Can I check your ID?" No, I didn't get asked that. I wanted to check the ID of the bartender. Everyone working there looked like they were still teenagers. Being in Civil War era attire, maybe that's legal? My glass of Tears of Gettysburg (Adams County Winery) white wine was way too sweet and reminded me of a girly cocktail. Sadly, the menu consisted of all bar/pub food with the exception of the Game Pie. There was lots of meat with not much else, and I wasn't able to tell if it really was peasant, duck, or plain old shredded turkey. Only the top of the pie was covered in crust, which was flaky with a croissant consistency. The dark brown gravy/stew went well with the crispy fat fries. I would have stayed longer for a few drunken rounds, but the bartender probably had to close up shop to watch for enemy soldiers... or sleep early for a school night. :P read more

I go to Sweeney's Tavern every time I go to Gettysburg which is like 3-4 times a year. - I love the atmosphere. Feels old & rustic with the bar and setting. - They play the movie - Gettysburg - all the time and it only makes the experience better. I always watch it even though I've seen the movie hundreds of times lol. - They have tons of memorabilia from The movie 'Gettysburg' - I just discovered their AMAZING Buffalo Wings.
