Rolled ice cream Matcha Red Bean
Amy S.

This review is specifically about the rolled ice cream :) Came here after dinner to fill up that separate stomach for dessert. They have those giant touch screen ordering devices which make it easy to customize your order on your own. The rolled ice cream comes with 3 toppings and there are plenty of options including fruit, whipped cream, sprinkles, etc. It's $7.50 in total, which is a tad overpriced in my humble opinion. It took maybe 5-10 minutes to get our order. I got the matcha redbean with condensed milk, banana, and strawberry. One is plenty and I wish I had shared it. The rolled ice cream was...harder than I expected. Like it was difficult the get my spoon to cut through it and get a spoonful into my mouth. So wasn't a huge fan of the texture, but I enjoyed the novelty of it. And the flavor is amazing! Very matcha-y. My boyfriend had the taro and that flavor was amazing as well. I think it's hard to get a strong taro flavor, but this place did a great job. The toppings are good too, although I do wish they gave more but I understand then it probably wouldn't fit on the ice cream.

This is a really cute Boba shop. They menu is tremendous. You can order from your phone or they have a self ordering kiosk in the lobby. My friend and I used the Kiosk, and it was really easy to navigate. I ended up getting a Boba and a rolled ice cream. Of course I came for the Boba but I honestly LOVED the Rolled Ice Cream maybe even more than the Boba. When your order is ready they have a nifty manual conveyer belt device. They put your order on the tray and you pull the cord until the tray reaches you, you remove your order and and then slide the tray back down to them. It is very easy to use. They have indoor seating and outdoor seating. We ended up sitting outside. Everything was great. The staff are very friendly. The only downside right now (because of COVID) is that you can't use their restroom. Check it out if you are in town, it's a great spot.

They use artificial Sweetingner at Sweeting, which is where the name comes from. But then is there any sweetener that isn't artificial? And I'm tired of all this unofficial art. It's time to make Artofficial. Am I right. I wasn't a fan of any of the bubble tea that I had in Ann Arbor. Which is a shame cuz it's a college town so I was hoping there would be some good stuff and there really wasn't. However this was by far the worst of the two especially in terms of service - honestly I got some of the worst service I can remember. They wouldn't give me a drink holder for starters. They had them, and insisted it was for people who ordered 4, and I only had 2 (and a bubble waffle). They made other people's drinks before mine. They had attitude issues. They didn't tell me when my stuff was ready. And just generally not very friendly at all. Prices are really good but unfortunately the products don't match them. They did absolutely nothing for me. I only give a neutral 3 because it's family owned, and they had Mochi ice cream.

Great place to grab dessert! I've tried the rolled ice cream from here and each time it has been delicious. It is prepared quickly and I also like adding my own toppings!

Hand rolled ice cream

I just came for the ice cream rolls and it was goooooood! Before coming to Sweeting, I had never heard of the place. I think they used only serve tea and Asian pastries, but a recent Instagram post showed they were serving hand rolled ice cream, so I went for that. While waiting for my ice cream roll to be made, I noticed they also were serving up ramen, so it might be fun to go back and try them out for lunch one day! Overall, the ice cream rolls were pretty good. Not overly sweet like the kind I had in NYC and not nearly as expensive either. The only thing I will say is that it's a little crowded by the register and the ice cream roll section, because obviously everyone wants to watch their ice cream be rolled ;) Other than that, it's not too bad! It's also located on South University so totally away from most things I do in Ann Arbor, but, it was very busy in there so it seems like a pretty hot spot for students!

I've only tried the Milk tea and boba, but I really enjoyed it. As far as covid, they were super cautious- they had a little trolley to deliver your drinks to you! Great location, staff is super nice, and a great little pick me up! I would say, its a little overpriced though

I got a strawberry drink and some fried shumai earlier today and my experience was not the greatest. Nobody was wearing masks or gloves (and it felt so unsanitary and not COVID-friendly because the employees were just continually talking without masks while making the food). Also, the employees took a really long time to make my said drink and shumai (around 20-25+ minutes?) .... when I was top in line lol. Cost me $11+ and lesson learned. Always check your surroundings before you order, and check if it's COVID safe before you make a purchase. I'm adding on one star because I love fried shumai (in general) and it was good (though I'm not sure if it's worth the money lmao). The drink was alright but I felt bad about eating it due to the unhygienic conditions... definitely not coming here again.

Chocolate rolled ice!

I've been here a couple times and despite the overwhelmingly large menu, I've tried enough to be able to finally throw my two cents in regarding this bubble tea/ice cream/Asian dessert fusion shop. First: they have a gigantic menu. You'll find an extensive list of teas but also rolled ice cream, ramen, a plethora of Asian sweets, and the bubble teas come in British style (creamier and just better tasting imo) or regular (more tea and water based). Second: I hate their rolled ice cream. Chocolate was a total miss unless you enjoy fake non creamy chocolate flavor. Strawberry was another miss because the graham mix in ruins it and even after I requested it without, they didn't take it out of the mix in! Ew! I got a grainy honey graham flavor that I really wasn't seeking when I wanted fresh and light strawberry. Matcha didn't astound either. For the price, this is just bad. Rolled ice cream in Columbus and Philly have both tasted better so I'm not sure what they are doing to the batter here, and I feel like they should've warned me that they couldn't take the graham out of the strawberry before making me drop $6 on something I hated. So yes, customer service isn't great either. Third: Delicious bubble tea at least. Not the best and can't compete with established chains like KFT or even ChaTime, but it's the best around the Ann Arbor area. Maybe they can think about adding salted cheese/cream to their teas since that's an up and coming trend? Could really make their tea stand out a bit more. Bubbles are okay. Ask for the tea to be half sweet because it's sickly sick at full sugar. Fourth: Fairly tasty desserts. Definitely get the new mango creme mochi thing. The skin tastes more like crepe than mochi (I'm almost positive that ain't mochi) but nonetheless it's light, refreshing, and perfect for dessert lovers who like lighter tasting desserts!! Lastly: cute atmosphere and great place to come hangout with friends or family. Plus there's so much to see and do just walking around the area. Nothing like Umich campus, as much as I hate having to admit it since I'm OSU fan through and through. 4/5 for being cute and tasty but not 5/5 because that rolled ice cream is completely underwhelming. Hope this review was helpful - the menu is anxiety inducing!

This is probably one of the better boba shops on campus, but still not great. My go-to drink is the taro frostea + bubbles ($5.31), but the more and more I get it, the less flavor it has. It kinda tastes like melted heavy whipping cream. I've also tried their Matcha frostea and british matcha bubble tea and both do not have much flavor. The bubble tea version tastes pretty close to colored water. I feel like most of their drinks are probably good, but these are the select few that weren't great when I got them. I like this place because they offer other desserts like rolled ice cream and HK style desserts. The H9, mango and sweet balls, is $8.28 for something so small. It is one of my favorite desserts when I go to Asia; I always look forward to eating these types of desserts, so I was really happy when I found out that Sweeting serves them. But for what I paid for I was pretty disappointed, the price they offer it at is honestly not worth it. I would justify it if it was ~$5-6 but $8 is just too much for something that small. In addition, the sweet balls were so hard, I do not think they were cooked all the way through before serving it to us. I have never tried their actual food here, but they do have food + drink/dessert combos which is pretty nice and saves money.

I have never had the food at here, but have had their dessert. The rolled ice cream (matcha!) is pretty good here; you also get two free toppings to go along with it. The other HK style desserts are just decent. As for bubble tea, I'd rather go across the street and go to Bubble Island.

Looking for the taro balls...

Do not get the Mochi!!! It is a crepe wrap with whipped cream, so disappointing to a true Mochi lover.

Tried the grass jelly instead of the boba this time. It was actually pretty decent. Still too expensive though.

There is a good amount of seating inside with colorful decoration of pac man. I ordered the Mango Milk Tea with black tea and boba. It was reasonably priced at $5 something. The boba was chewy and milk tea with mango syrup was good! It was very refreshing on this 94 degree weather day! I would come back! Oh also, when I asked what kind of milk they use (for my fellow lactose sensitive peeps), she said Creamer. Not sure if it's non-dairy creamer but it sat well in my stomach thankfully!

It's easy to order on a kiosk, and they do all the customizations (ice, sugar level, toppings). I got a medium iced Taro milk tea, 30% sweet, regular ice, add lychee jelly. It was good! Hit the spot. The level of sweetness and ice was just right. Lychee jelly was the perfect amount of chewy. The flavor of the tea was good, and actually tasted like tea. I didn't ask, but given the tea taste, I'm thinking this taro has caffeine (at other places, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't). I didn't get much of the taro flavor coming through though.

The host was responsive. The food came out of the kitchen incredibly fast. It had that hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant feel. But that's about it. That's the 2 stars. The hot and sour soup got the taste balance and broth right but the ingredients were a disappointment, too much tofu, too much egg, not enough wood ear and/or black mushrooms, scandalously few shredded bamboo shoots (which also clearly came from a can). The wok hei for the mu shu pork was not good; too greasy and again, the ingredients were really inadequate (way too many onions, zero cabbage, scant protein). The hoisin sauce clearly came out of a bottle (way too sweet and flat) and here's the death blow - thick flour tortillas, not those thin Mandarin pancakes. I mean, the thinness of the pancake is the whole point - it is NOT a "Chinese burrito" (a phrase that is an insult to burritos, mind you). The last dish was ma po tofu. For me, a good ma po tofu is all about flavor balance - do you understand between straight up heat from the chili and the numbing of Sichuan peppercorns? They do not understand, this was so overwhelmingly peppercorn that it seemed pretty apparent that someone just equated "hot" with peppercorn and then added chili oil. Again, scant protein. I usually give a place a couple tries because anyone can have an off day. I won't be back. This is a kitchen quality problem, not an off day.

What's worse is it's a hidden gratuity that you may never notice. Pro Tip: Unbelievable someone has to be told this; check every item on your bill. Always look for posted signs as you initial enter; especially near the cash register. Also read the menu thoroughly. Normally, I wouldn't complain too loudly about an automatic 18% gratuity. What if today's service was lousy? It's no longer a tip, but a service charge. The biggest problem is not informing customers in advance. Maybe illegal? Well, IYKYK. I hate their dining room and probably always will. It's just like a boring, drab, dull office building cafeteria with no colour and nothing on the walls. Just an opinion. Always wanted to vent that. When it comes to customer service they are smiling, friendly and accommodating. Things have become a tad slow since pandemic. Maybe it's yet one more staffing shortage? The food here is very good. I encourage you to try the duck. Friends swear by the Wuxi Ribs. They did just raise the price to $22; but remember to add the 18% so that entree is now $26. I wonder if being a family O/O business, all tips stay in the building. Isn't that just a hidden price increase? 11/24
