All we wanted was a good, quick breakfast spot and instead we were subjected to an absolutely great one. All jokes aside, Sweet Maple Cafe is a classic, quaint breakfast spot with great service and very good food. We arrived on a Friday morning with a party of 7 and were seated right away. They have both indoor and outdoor seating; we chose indoor and the setting was very homey and comforting. Street parking is the only option available so if you're coming by car then be prepared to circle until you grab a spot. The menu is relatively standard aside from the fact that they offer specials depending on the day of the week. We ordered the not-so-plain buttermilk pancakes with a side of bacon, the catfish nuggets (Friday only special) with an egg and cinnamon raisin toast, and a raspberry latte. The pancakes? Soft and light. Not too thick but not paper thin, butter melted right into it and kept its flavor. Just the way we like pancakes. The bacon could've been a bit better as it was stiff but that's a small miss apart from the main dish. The catfish nuggets were straight up phenomenal. The batter was light and the catfish was cooked perfectly. The eggs were cooked just as requested and hey, even the cinnamon raisin toast was pretty good. Lastly, the latte was great. Smooth and sweet, the syrup not too strong but sweet enough to taste it. A great pairing to any breakfast meal. By the time we finished eating we were incredibly glad we had come into Sweet Maple Cafe. The food, service, and setting; all great. It pains me not to give this place a 5 because 5 should mean something that blows your mind from a taste and experience standpoint. This place is a great example of why reviews should allow for .5 or.1 intervals on rating because this place easily deserves much more than a 4, unfortunately we are limited by Product Engineers, but hey, maybe they'll read this and make a change (yeah, right).

Don't be surprised at the breakfast crowd that this place consistently pulls. I haven't been here in over 15 years, and it was just as good as I remember. The food is AMAZING. The time standards are awesome and the servers are great people. The screened in outdoor expansion was a great touch, too (there was only indoor seating when I visited as a teenager). The indoor area gives the best at home feel. The fact that it hasn't changed is honestly so endearing. The menu is solid and the Carmen G's Scramble offered a great portion with scrumptious sides. I'm excited to try more of the menu on my next trip to Chicago. Parking isn't as easy as it used to be, but that has nothing to do with this amazing place. Just a word to the wise, if you can...do a rideshare. If not, be prepared to search a little for a spot (unless you get lucky like we did)!

Start to finish, the experience felt like I was transported to a small shop in the south. Between the caring staff to the delicious food, I've decided I'll be returning every time I'm in Chicago. The cinnamon pancake is a must have. The home fries were perfectly made. I'm excited to try the menu in full.

The service here is absolutely warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. It has that true homey, old-school diner vibe that makes you feel comfortable as soon as you sit down. The food overall was good, but the real star of the show is the cinnamon roll pancake. Seriously, one of the best pancakes I've ever had. It is fluffy, flavorful, and perfectly sweet without being over the top. I'd come back for that alone.

Just wanted to once again praise this place! Service, ambiance and the food! My goodness the food! Please get here!

I just wanted to reinforce how amazing this place is! Wow! Such pleasant service and the food is ALWAYS incredible! Wow! Such a great place!

For Juneteenth we had a plan to go have brunch and support a local, Black-owned restaurant. After a quick search, I found Sweet Maple. It's located in the Italian district (W. Taylor Street) and is a homegrown, very charming and old-school type of eatery. The sign out front is worn - it's barely legible but inside is great food, warm smiles and amazing service. Parking is on the street and remember to pay at the machine or use the mobile app. Since it was a holiday, we arrived about 11:15 AM and the wait was outside. It was a mixed crowd of people - that's a good sign that great food awaits! We waited about 30 minutes to be seated and it was well worth it! For brunch we ordered the omelette breakfast, a skillet bowl and one of their buttermilk pancakes they're known for. Also, coffee and an Arnold Palmer (no sweet tea but mixed with lemonade it was great). Standouts: the fresh baked biscuits! Add butter and a little jelly...mouth watering. The buttermilk pancake too! So tasty and cooked just perfect. Our server was attentive and super nice. The food was served quickly and the flavors were delicious. I love breakfast and this was definitely a great start to our holiday weekend!

A cute quaint place that is celebrating their 25th year anniversary last year. We came in and were seated immediately. The place was half full on a Thursday morning and 9:15. Emmitt, our waiter was fast, efficient and courteous! My mom ordered some scrambled eggs cooked soft and grits. I ordered the Carmen G's Scramble which came with Eggs scrambled with bacon, spinach, mushrooms, and your choice of cheese. I chose cheddar cheese. I had home fries and a biscuit . Everything was fresh and delicious! It was like sitting in a grandma's dining room! Clean, reasonably priced, good food and great service!!!

Coffee was perfect.

Had the corn beef hash and it was delicious! The staff were all very friendly and I felt like family. Definitely worth the trip!

After 20 minute wait for a table, our server was really attentive. We enjoyed the vintage look, like your Grandma's home. Dishes came really quick! They were outstanding! We really loved our experience!!!

He had curly hair, was light skinned, and appeared to be either a waiter or busser. While we were seated, he bumped into my chair at least three times and even hit me in the back of the head while trying to move around the area. He apologized each time, but after it kept happening, it became frustrating and uncomfortable. He was also spraying 409 heavily at the table right next to us while we were eating. It was so much spray that I genuinely felt like it may have gotten on my food. On top of that, he repeatedly dropped things around our table and seemed to have a difficult time maneuvering through the dining area. It honestly made me wonder if the table placement itself was part of the problem The food service was also disappointing. My meal came out first, and I had to wait quite a while for my sister's chicken biscuit. When it finally arrived, the chicken was not cooked all the way through. My pancake and bacon were both good. I just wish the overall experience had matched the quality of those items. Between being repeatedly bumped into, being hit in the head, cleaning chemicals being sprayed next to our food, and undercooked chicken, it made the experience difficult to enjoy.

Nice and cozy inside with an open kitchen. The place was very clean and not too loud. They had some nice old school soul music playing in which I liked. Everyone talked about how stellar the service is but we didn't experience that. Our server Alex was a nice gentleman but he wasn't very attentive to us. He seemed to give the other tables a lot more attention than he gave us. 5/10 for service. I still tipped him 25% but he didn't deserve a 10% tip. The food made up for his lackluster service. We ordered The Short Ribs, Bone in Pork Chop, Collard Greens, Mac & Cheese, Cornbread w/Honey Butter & the Banana pudding for dessert. The short ribs came on top of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes with a very savory gravy. This dish was spot on, tender and everything was seasoned to perfection!! It comes with some fried onions on top which added a nice touch to the dish. 10/10!! The Bone in Pork Chop was decent. Very tender but the flavor was basic at best. My wife & I agreed that it was a mediocre dish. 5.3/10. Now the sides were absolutely delicious!! The collard greens were so flavorful. Some of the best collards I've ever eaten. Cooked perfectly! 10/10. The Mac & Cheese was also amazing! Baked and homemade with a nice crust of cheese on top! Easy 10/10. The cornbread was pretty good. It paired well with the greens. Slightly sweet but not too sweet. 7/10. The banana pudding is something that got rave reviews but it was just ok to us. Nothing special as I make a better banana pudding. 5/10. I wouldn't get it again. All in all it was a very good meal. We will definitely return. As we enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant. Check them out if you haven't. Even with a reservation we waited around 20 minutes, they were busy, even for a Friday morning. So again, highly recommend a reservation. The space is good size, featuring indoor and outdoor seating and even a bar if you want to belly up to it. We ended up in one of the two-seater booths not far from the entrance. Their menu features all the classic breakfast and brunch dishes plus a few twists or elevations of those dishes. We had our eye on several things, but ended up going with a classic breakfast croissant/sandwich, a side of jalapeno grits and sausage. Before we placed all that, we ordered the biscuit basket to start with. Unfortunately the biscuits made it out well after our main dishes did. The biscuits were tasty, but the butter they were served with was ice cold and still very much frozen, due to that, we could not get the full flavor of the strawberry butter. The honey was good, it had a nice kick to it. But we do wish the butter had been a bit more thawed. The other dishes were solid, sandwich was as expected, sausage was okay and the grits were smokey, creamy and cheesy. Service was good, our server was friendly and helpful, but a bit overwhelmed. They were busy, and we were not in a rush, but you could tell she was in deep. But even so, she was still polite and engaging throughout our meal. Overall, we enjoyed Dawn AM Eatery. There were three major misses: 1) NO COFFEE was available until we were halfway through our meal--10am breakfast on a Sunday and no coffee is available//REALLY(?); 2) It was much more humid inside than was necessary given the temperature outside--turn on your air//it was stuffy; and, 3) I specifically asked in the reservation notes to be seated as privately as possible as this was an HR-related business meeting. I was seated one foot away from another table when other seating possibilities were available that were more private--clearly my note was not looked at before I was seated even though I asked if she'd seen my reservation. After being seated I asked if I could slide my table over as there was a wide open table to my right but a table a foot away to the left. The hostess accommodated the request, but 15 minutes later someone slid a table from the row in front of us to the space directly next to our table. The breakfast was good--"Big Benny" (Eggs Benedict's) was delicious according to my guest, and the "Make It A Classic" (2 eggs, hash browns, toast, bacon or sausage) was as advertised. My only negative on the food is the hash-browns tasted like potatoes out of a bag and were not warm so definitely not cooked to order despite the wait.

And instead of regular bread, I got it on a biscuit, which honestly took the whole thing to another level. The biscuit was soft, crumbly, with that buttery flavor that paired so well with the fried chicken. Calling this just a sandwich almost feels wrong because the whole thing was an absolute mess in the best possible way. The chicken was the star, it was crunchy, red golden and incredibly juicy. The Nashville hot sauce brought a spicy kick that hit right away and lingered, while the dill pickles added a sharp, tangy bite. The cucumber coleslaw brought a cool, refreshing crunch, and the chipotle buttermilk ranch added a creamy, smoky flavor that helped bring everything together. I even added some honey making the sandwich even better. The sweetness softened the heat just enough, creating this sweet-and-spicy combination that made every bite more exciting. There was so much happening, sauce everywhere, toppings sliding around, and absolutely worth the mess. Roost absolutely delivered.
