    Lemon Raspberry Cake
    Cory N.

Holy cow! I just unknowingly spent $10 for a slice of cake. After my sticker shock at check out, I figured, ok... I love their sour cherry pies, and I'm sure that this will be just as good. Ummm, NO! It was dry and dense. If I'm going to slurge on calories, it has to be worth it, and this definitely was not. Tossed it after 2 bites. So disappointing and such a waste of money.

Ordered 4 dozen cupcakes for my daughters 8th birthday. She let me choose flavours then brought them to life. Strawberry cupcakes with daintily decorated lemon buttercream frosting was our selection and they were not only beautiful but DELICIOUS. I MEAN... dangerously tasty. Customer service was awesome. The owner is so accommodating and willing to work to give you what you want. The bakery is cute, clean, and full of deliciousness.

Blackberry lemon and their special ding dong

I've been wanting to go here for years! I've read it's the best bakery in Washington. I will say their selection was pretty underwhelming. I'm guessing they focus more on cake orders than they do selling individuals in the bakery. They had 5 different cupcake (lemon, lemon blackberry, peanut butter, vanilla, chocolate). 2 cakes (vanilla and almond). The salted caramel bites and their ding dong things. That's it! Not a big selection by any means and pretty plain and simple. I think I had hyped myself up a little too much. I got the ding dong and the blackberry lemon cupcake. Both extremely fresh, moist, and baked perfectly. It didn't blow my mind but they were delicious nonetheless. I'd like to go back and try a cake

Writing this long overdue review!! I was referred to Methia by my best friend because I was looking for someone that can make my daughter a unicorn cake for her 8th birthday. Before putting in an order we came to the shop for the mother daughter tea just to try the goodies. Everything we had were sooooo delicious!! I was definitely SOLD. Even though Methia said she's never done a unicorn cake before she was more then willing to make one for me. The day of my daughter's party my Husband went to pick up the cake with no problem. The cake was so beautiful that my daughter refused to let anyone touch it. We didn't get a taste of the cake until later on that night and to my surprise, it was sooooooooo Effing* good. It was shocking to me because with any cake, you either get a pretty cake that doesn't taste very good or a delicious cake that doesn't look very great. My daughter's cake was beautiful and delicious. It was so moist and airy. It didn't taste like we eating 10pounds of sugar. Another thing that I love is that Methia make her cake very high so for a 8inch cake, it looked like ALOT. We loved it. Thank you Methia!!!!

Oh man, did we love our wedding cakes! We learned of Sweet Life through our caterer who suggested that we call ASAP because it books fast! After some exchange about our vision, we had a fantastic tasting (we were delighted and stuffed when we left) and were sold! Methia put together a beautiful spread. We wanted a "deconstructed tier cake" with all different looks and flavors. They were all delicious and gorgeous! Methia also worked with me on including a Sweet Bliss (yum) for a guest whose birthday was the same day as the wedding!

The best part of the cupcake is that it is chocolate dipped like a Dairy Queen cone from your childhood!

First their baked goods are stodgy and not properly executed. Their shortbread tastes like cardboard and is nothing like English shortbread should be. No good butter in evidence here. Their koign amman is not even crisp on the outside. There is something off with each baked item. If you enjoy dump and go style baking that don't require any refinement but are full of American sugar, I think you will feel this is an elite bakery. Otherwise, this is a bad knock off attempt. Scones seem to be chewy and tasteless. I got a "lemon poppyseed" polenta cake where there was no lemon-y flavor at all! It was also heavy and couldn't handle more than 3 bites at a time. Stuck in the gullet. Second their service is appalling. The people behind the counter are all in on some inside ball game and customer service is not their emphasis. They are looking away while half-heartedly asking you what you would like, and more interested in serving up verbal repartees to their co-workers while distractedly trying to complete a sale. You can expect to repeat your order a few times. Then there's the off-handed use of bakery tissue which is not quite neat and hygienic. I mean it's a shambolic operation that gets away with it because there is no competition in Kingston unless you take the ferry across to Edmonds.

I tried to revisit once during the holiday season, but the pastry case was cleaned out except for three cookies. I had much better luck stopping in and hanging out onsite (1/8/26). Same welcoming counter person/barista. Better available variety, and I opted for the featured special, 12oz mocha and a pain au chocolat for $9, which was a great value! There were just two others onsite. There were a lot of takeout customers, including regulars, that I observed while onsite at a nearby two top. My mocha was decent, the pain au chocolat was fresh, good flavor and texture, despite being pretty hollow. The photo I took created quite the illusion, looked like it had mass quantities of melty chocolate. Despite the bakery/cafe has an unassuming, now faded yellow exterior and well worn interior, French and Vietnamese inspired Grand Pere Bakery has quite the longevity record and staying power since March 2014. I'm not sure if it's because something changed on the side of the bakery (maybe recipe or personnel changes?) or on my side, having tried more bakeries around the area. On our last visit we bought two loaves of bread to accompany a butter tasting. Both loaves I found to be not nearly as high quality as I remember previously. Pane Bello ($9) - The crust basically doesn't exist in this bread. It's soft and leathery and doesn't give that satisfying crispness of a well baked bread. The interior, while having good crumb structure, is particularly dry and almost crumbly. The taste is mild, perfect for pairing with higher end butters. (3/5) Parmesan Black Pepper Sourdough ($9) - This batard has similar texture as compared to the Pane Bello. It has the addition of plenty of black pepper baked inside, spaced out rather evenly, allowing a peppery bite every time. There's salty and fatty parmesan baked on top, giving a caramelized salty umami. It definitely has more flavor than the Pane Bello, but suffers from the same textural issues. (3/5) We purchased both loaves at 10AM on a Sunday morning and they were consumed within 2.5 hours, so I don't think it's an issue with storage. I ate a bit of their regular foccacia at a work event too. It has a good crispy exterior and is salted well on the top. Unfortunately the interior isn't the best, having a really dense, chewy crumb. I'm honestly not sure what happened. I really loved The Cottage when I first moved here 1.5 years ago. Now? I have a number of bakeries I'd choose over here in a heartbeat.

Line tends to be long but moves at a moderate speed, as the employees are open to chatting. Large Butterhorn - excessively sweet to a point where I felt sick of sugar because it's also pretty big. I personally would rather eat a fluffy donut because this felt more like a condensed block of sugar, but seems to be a favorite for others. Might just not be for me. Swedish Almond Pastry - while this was also super sweet, the almond flavor was able to pop out at times. Sliced almonds on top helped sprinkle some extra flavor but were ultimately consumed by the sweetness. A little flakier in texture which helped dissociate with the dense sugar block.
