The best part of this shop is how cosy it feels inside, with its bakery items in the front display counter, surrounded by shelves of European-imported and gourmet jams, oils, wines, cheeses, and cocktail mixers. You can only get regular brewed coffee here; their pastries are the highlight. I have had their pear danish (superb and light) and orange almond cake without gluten (delicious). Scones, muffins, cookies, and canele are also laid out. In terms of bread, their bakery delivers from Port Townsend. Some of the boules and loaves do look hefty. I have bought the "ficelle" a light bread with a satisfying crust in the shape of a baguette. It works as a side bread for an Italian meal or with soups perfectly. The shop is a delightful nook for specialty gifts and treats. It does seem to display an "old world" ambience because of the low-slung roof and architecture. However, the workers are not wearing ironed bakery smocks. They are wearing dodgy street clothes which can touch the items and that's not very "old world Euro" now is it. read more

Oh what a Gem! On the hunt for a morning vegan treat, i had no success until i popped into Pane D'Amore! My eyes went straight to the Vegan Pumpkin Muffin! it's like they knew i was coming! They welcomed me with kindness and excitement to converse about bread! Although the pastries were slim in the vegan department the muffin was perfect! moist, flavorful and damn yummy! 95% of the bread is vegan and it is the bomb! i got 2 muffins. Their Seedy Sourdough is out of this world, soft crust loaded with sesame, oats and more. Some of the seeds make their way into the crumb and is delightful. i also got the Kalamata olive batard! (i love bread with extra bits in it!) I inquired about the cranberry walnut and they promptly sliced me up some samples to take with me. so sweet of them. I stumbled upon this place on a bike ride around Bainbridge Island. It's a little market with sone pastries and I tried the chocolate gluten free cookie and the chocolate brownies at the suggestion of the nice young lady behing the counter. I'm so glad I did. The cookie was a little chewy and crisp with a hint od sea salt. It it the spot after some long hill climbs on my bicycle. The brownie was intensly chocolaty tasting like my favorite triple chocolate cookie from Grand Central Bakery in Seattle's Pioneer Square. Pane is filled with all kinds of goodies like the chocolate fondue from Paris. I'll visit again the next time I circumnavigate Bainbridge on my bicycle. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find appealing looking pastries (cookies, cake, muffins, bread, croissants, scones, savory turnovers, even gluten free items), a good assortment of cheeses, pate, olives, pasta, wine and other gourmet food items (e.g., duck confit). * Cheesesticks: Long, thin and chewy, coated with parmesan, not soft or super hard, firm, chewy and very cheesy * Mini cannelle ($1): the cutest thing, not as creamy inside as other cannelles but very good caramelized exterior * Cream shortcake ($1.25): tender, fluffy, sweet, simple goodness, would be amazing with strawberries Their baked goods are also sold at The Treehouse restaurant in the same shopping center. read more

I'm in HEAVEN with Pane d'Amore! My date and I were craving sweets after The Taste of Lynwood so this is what we had: Chocolate crossaint This was good, but definitely not the best chocolate crossaint I've had. I wish it was flakier but I like the chocolate used. Creme brulee like bites (I can't remember the exact name) The lady that convinced us to try it was right, it did taste like creme brulee in a pastry form. I thought the size was perfect and if it were any bigger it would have been overkill. Sweet potato cupcake This is what actually lured my date and I to have something sweet after the Taste. We enjoyed every bit of this cupcake: from the moist and delicious sweet potato cake to the creme cheese frosting, which was not overwhelmingly sweet. I loved the sweet potato cupcake so much that I just had to buy one (and a carrot cake cupcake) for a friend's bday dinner later that evening. At the end of dinner, we all shared the cupcakes, which were a hit with our table. They also have a croissant bread pudding that I can't wait to try on my next visit. read more

Pane d'Amore is not only a great bakery, they also carry a little selection of locally made foods (Via Rosa, Tani Creek, etc.). The inventory is not always consistent - some days you'll find chicken eggs, some days goose eggs, some days duck eggs - some days no eggs at all. The prices are higher than going to the supermarket, but this is a little neighbourhood store, so I would expect higher prices - you pay for the convenience. They have a good selection of wines and cheeses! I docked them a star because I found a live baby slug in my Tani Creek salad greens I purchased here last month. I haven't been able to eat salad again since that incident. read more

Man, I am totally in love with Pane d'Amore. I went twice when I was in Port Townsend a few months ago. When planning a weekend get-a-way to Bainbridge Island I was excited to see there was another location on the island! First off---the Building is ADORABLE. It's a Tudor style, and I just fell in love with it when driving up. Located in Lynwood Center, this isn't walk-able from the Ferry Terminal, but located right on the water in an adorable neighborhood with lots of shops and restaurants, and a little Inn. This time around my boyfriend and I tried their Reuben croissant, French twist, cowboy pastry, a cheese stick and a loaf of their Ficelle bread. As usual, all of it was delicious! I really enjoyed the Reuben croissant, it is common to see ham & cheese croissants, but this was a fun and delicious variation. The cowboy with pesto, cheese and bacon is always good. I think the Ficelle was my favorite though, chewier and softer than a traditional baguette, and went great with some Mt Townsend cheese we picked up in the shop as well. In addition to all their delicious breads and pastries, they also have a good cheese case, local wines and beers and a few other tidbits in a little grocery area. You could pick up everything you need for a picnic, or a nice dinner at home. read more

Pane d'Amore is the anti-supermarket, and a foodie paradise on Bainbridge. Short of meat and fish, you'll find everything here that's edible: parmesan cheese sticks (a favorite of our two children), bread of every shape and size (try the French Pullman), pasta, a huge selection of cheese, wine and beer, flowers (OK, not edible), local farm produce, even duck eggs. When we have family or guests for dinner, I like to come here and buy the entire meal. For a fettucino alfredo, perhaps: fresh pasta (made on Bainbridge), local cream (thick and almost yellow), prosciutto, a block of parmesan, a loaf of still-warm bread, a nice bottle of red. If there really is a national resurgence in small, independent food retail - butchers, bakeries, fishmongers, greengrocers - then Pane d'Amore is as good an example of the trend as you're likely to find. If you're visiting Bainbridge Island by car or bicycle, head out 10 minutes from downtown Winslow to the south end and Lynwood Center, a small, tudor-style development built in the 1930s and lovingly re-furbished in the last decade. Stop in the Treehouse Café for coffee, a microbrew, or wood-fired pizza, catch an indie flick at the Historic Lynwood Theater, browse the instruments at Village Music, and then indulge yourself at Pane d'Amore. (Return to the ferry via Rockaway Beach for a great view of the Seattle skyline.) This would be a 5-star review but, alas, for the staff, who are uniformly miserable. I visit often enough to know that it's not simply a case of someone having a bad day. Never a hello, never a "what can I get you for you today." First off, great service, all smiles and very helpful! Love the bread here! Today I headed over to grab a bagel, and I was sooo excited to try a in-house made bagel, and then my heart broke, but at least my tooth didn't! Small, no chew, wAy over cooked, seriously though--I'm pretty certain they weren't fresh either. I will be back though, for my favorite bread and bread sticks that are excellently priced! The bakery has a baking schedule that varies so call ahead if looking for something in particular. Specialties include yummy crisp cheese sticks, 100% rye, ficelli, oat bread, seasonal fruit and nut breads, savory of many types, cranberry walnut, and sooooo many others, (with local ingredients added too)! The bakery also has a wonderful little Italian section, cheeses, various ingredients in the cold section, and don't forget the pastries; blueberry cornmeal muffins, scones, cookies, croissants, and well, you get the just of it! Great bakery! I was visiting family on Bainbridge Island this weekend and we decided to drop by here. I am a bread addict so I know good bread when I see it. And they have good bread! The kids picked some yummy baked goods (I recommend the ham and cheese croissant!) and I took home a loaf of their yummy sourdough wheat and a couple homemade dog biscuits for the pup. I also prefer this location to the Pane d'Amore flagship in Port Townsend-more breathing room to take in all the lovely grocery items promotes lingering longer, which leads to increased pastry consumption, which leads to increased joy. The chocolate and almond croissants' fillings are a bit anemic for my taste, but still quite tasty. Their breads are consistently very good, but the exceptionally good items that lure me to Lynnwood are refined to a few... Fig Anise bread. So unusual, but ridiculously delicious. Who knew that such bliss could come from the marriage of fig and anise? Apple Danish & Pear Danish. Not too sweet, perfect filling, and Pane d'Amore's signature pastry goodness. Cowboy. Cowboy up and order 2; they're small. Mt. Townsend Creamery Campfire cheese, spinach-ricotta filling, and bacon. C'mon...get the heck outta here kind of mmm-mmm goodness. Why can't I eat just one? Giacometti. Chewy, crispy, cheesy breadsticks. These are best eaten fresh (within a few hours); I haven't had much luck trying to purchase the breadsticks in the morning for dinner with friends on the same day. One, the quality of the chewy, crispy, cheesy combo seems to lose the sparkle quickly. Two, the addictive quality of bread and cheese does not favor waiting or sharing. 90+ degrees is hot weather in Seattle, so I packed up my kids to go hang with my friend on Bainbridge Island. She had heard that the Port Townsend original of this bakery had opened a branch on Bainbridge Island. It is located in Lynwood Center, a little village on the southend of the island. We really, really wanted to like it, but were disappointed. We expected a sweet little bakery - a place to sit out, European style, at a cafe table. Instead, we found a sort of grocery/bakery. All the food items, including the baked goods, were great - if I lived in the neighborhood I might like walking there for a treat. It just was not arranged as a place to sit and have coffee. The way the shelving is arranged made us feel real uncomfortable with the kids. Worrying that one's child will knock over racks of expensive wine bottles does not make for a good time. Instead, we drove across the street to the "down home" mini-grocery called Walt's. The kids were free to grab an ice cream treat from the case. Pane D'Amore is very nice, but just not a destination place to sit and relax. read more

I dislike having to giving this potentially great bakery only 1 star.... The pastries are good to great. However, they pretty much only have the same items every time I go in, which can get boring quickly. But the big turn-off is some of the employees. Never a hello, or "how can I help" or a "thank you". Not even eye-contact. I have never seen such negative energy in a shop. I live on the Island and would like to give them daily sweet-tooth business, but I can't stomach the rudeness, moroseness and the indifference of some of the folks behind the counter. Used to like the cream scones. Few weeks ago suddenly they taste bad, bitter. Mentioned this (no refund offered). Whatever, a fluke(?) Try again. Same, bad, bitter taste. Inedible. Mentioned again was told "yes, we know, they make them in big batches and something is wrong with this batch." They are still selling that same "bad" batch. Waited a few weeks to purchase any more scones until the bad batch cleared out. And next time received a good tasting scone again. However, it's less than half the previous size. Asked, was told it is a "new baker." I mention to (owner?) Elliott. Was met with disdain. Definitely do not recommend communicating any feedback to Elliott. read more
