This is officially my favorite sushi spot in the entire DMV area. All the food is absolutely amazingly fresh and every piece is just a roller coaster for your taste buds. I first roll i would recommend is the volcano roll. I don't know how to explain it but they place crab meat on top of the roll and drench the entire roll with this amazing sauce. I don't know how to really explain it but it's all good. Get this roll! The next roll i would suggest is the soft shell crab roll. There are some places that use squid instead of real soft shell crab, but Sweet Ginger definitely know what they are doing and fry the soft shell crab to perfection. They compliment the soft shell crab so perfectly while not overpowering the shellfish and really highlight the crab. A must try roll if you come here. I judge Sushi very seriously. I also look at the character and ambiance of an establishment. If I want decent food for a reasonable price... I'll goto Wegmans and get a Few Rolls and be just fine. If I want to treat myself with an experience that is driven by the need to be lost for an hour or so, taking in a comfortable surrounding and eating an extremely consistent and always top quality meal. The place is small but it's why it's successful. Make reservations and be ready to be seated somewhat close to other but focus in the eating experience and you will be greatly rewarded. I suffer from a shellfish allergy and many of the most popular sushi and sashimi is not on my radar. I can attest the Veggie Rolls are always good. I'm generic and the Spicy Tuna roll with ugh crunchy texture and amazing spicy sauce is my top choice, then come the unagi! Never bony, too fatty or undercooked. It's a good way to expose a new sushi eater to more exotic choices. The flaky white meat and sweet/salty glaze is another of my favorites. I haven't tried the traditional choices but the Teriyaki's smell epic! I'm in West Va most of the time but I'll drive 2 hours just to treat myself! Try them out, best place I've found! read more

This place was really good! I came with a group of us 4 girlfriends on a Fri night. Luckily, no wait for a booth. We were so undecided on what to order, but settled on the "sushi for 2" platter, which came with 12 pieces (chef's selection) sushi, 24 rolls (spicy tuna, salmon, eel, something else). It was big! We got full fast; maybe from the side salad and miso soups (2 bowls of each came with this platter). I'm still happy we were full after splitting this platter meant for 2 four-ways. I literally love Sweet Ginger. I have had their food about 4 times and never had any compliments. All their specialty rolls are so creative and fresh. Honorable mentions are the Mexican roll, beauty and the beast roll, and the spicy crab roll. Their basil beef is also very tasty, and the duck roll is amazing! The inside is cute and intimate, I honestly was surprised when I walked in because I was expecting something basic, but it was nicely decorated. This is a hidden gem. I was feeling like sushi so just yelped and found this place. From outside it was looking as any other Japanese place but as soon as I stepped in, I was amazed. Very nice decor and well organized. Place is comparatively smaller and quite busy. Around 7 all the tables were taken. They have great variety of sushi to choose from. They also have thai and Chinese option. We ordered grilled chicken with rice noodles, forgot the name of the dish. Chicken was grilled well and I liked the spices. I'd say it's one of the top chinese/japanese places I've been to...just because it has a lot of options, a nice (not overdone) easy atmosphere. It has a warm feeling to it, probably because of the red-ish lighting. Food: I recommend the Pad Thai--good size and yummy. I also don't usually get fried rice (because I'm Asian and it's one of the easiest things to make in the world) but I had a craving so I got it. It's a REALLY BIG PORTION and if I didn't have it for take out, it would've come in a cool round wok looking thing. It's full of flavor, has chicken, pork, veggies, onions, everything! It was really delicious...and so satisfying. My friend gets sushi there and he says it's also very good. The service is very friendly and the manager was trying hard to cater to my taste. I wasn't sure what I was in the mood for and he tried to get a taste for my taste and he was willing to make a special dish for me. He was just like "what are you in the mood for? what kind of meat, what kind of dish, rice or noodle, veggies?" He was really considerate and willing to please. My friends and I came across this play from the positive yelp ratings and also a recommendation from a friend. When we came in, it was like a fusion of a Japanese and Thai vibe and when we saw the menu, they actually had Japanese + Thai food which we thought was an odd mix. We all shared two sushi plates with each other. It had rolls, sashimi, and nigiri on the plates with different types of fish. Some of the fish like salmon was really good but tuna, flounder (I think it was flounder anyways) were really tough and dry. They either weren't frozen properly or wasn't thawed properly. I only had the sushi so I can't speak for the other dishes but it didn't stand out. Everything is doused in spicy mayo, which I'm personally not a fan of so had to ask to make sure it was on the side. Charged $1 for a tempura jalapeño when I asked whether they had fresh sliced jalapeños. Would have paid $1 happily if I got what I requested. A friend and I went for dinner and right as you walk in the decor is so cute! It was so inviting and warm. We were sat down quickly, and the service came with a smile. They have happy hour until 7 and we had only a few minutes until it was over. We ordered a couple drinks (the Moscow mule was pretty good, and it came in an actual copper cup ). This is what surprised me even more, the server came over with a smile and said that it was last call before happy hour was over and if we wanted to order anything else. Most places would have never done that. She visited each table to make sure they all knew. That's what you call customer service. Now, let's talk about the sashimi, because that's all I really wanted (tonight, anyways). We ordered the sashimi for 2, along with fresh wasabi, and spicy salmon roll. The miso soup and salad came out quickly after we ordered. This was nice, because I was really hungry. The salad dressing had more of a peanut flavor, which wasn't bad. But I love the dressing that's more ginger based. Right after, the sashimi came out. It was so fresh, and so appealing to the eye. This paired with the fresh wasabi was amazing. The fresh wasabi was so good, you get the chunks of the wasabi and it didn't look like just green toothpaste. The flavor was definitely better. Overall, my experience was enjoyable. I will say once I found my favorite things to order I haven't really strayed to try new things very often but when I have I have never been unhappy. Everything I have had has been amazing. This is a fully service place (with takeout) in a Vienna shopping center. Everyone who works here is super nice, and your drinks and food arrive promptly. Overall, the interior is fairly nice, with an open sushi counter. The tables are looking a little worn, as are the menus and interior overall, though. The menu itself is massive - really too big, organized somewhat confusingly by region. There are a ton of Japanese options (including sushi), plus a solid page of pan-asian options. The beer and wine options are OK, but I would skip the cocktails. These are you typical Asian restaurant cocktails from 10-15 years ago - sweet and light on the alcohol. There's nothing wrong with that, but $10 each, just not really the right price for that option. The pan asian entrees are good, but nothing amazing. The General Tso's chicken is crispy, but on the sweet side, lacking any red chilis. But it's tasty, and served with good white rice. The paid thai has the right flavors, with well-cooked shrimp. Portions are decent and the entree prices are good. Overall, this is a decent experience, but the food isn't worth going out of your way for. It's a very solid, fast pickup option or quick full-service dinner. It's a step above Hunan Delight. But Thai by Thai in Dunn Loring has better entrees at the same price point. read more

I feel like I've been giving out a lot of 3 star ratings lately... Anyways. This restaurant deserves 3 stars. I think the 4 stars it gets is a little generous.... With that being said though, I didn't get all the sashimi or nigiri. I stuck with temaki. I also didn't try any of their asian noodles. I decided to finally try this place out because we were in the area and I had this placed bookmarked. However, upon arriving and seeing the super expansive menu, I realised this may not be to my liking. I usually find that the larger the menu, the lower the quality. Not always!! But in my experience, that usually is the case. So my friend and I went in around 5:45-6:00 pm on a Saturday evening. They were pretty busy and it appeared that they had a bunch of reservations coming in later as well! We sat down, looked over the menu. We decided to split the duck rolls off of the Asian Kitchen menu App page. I was probably most disappointed with this dish! It looked appetizing definitely! But the taste was such a let down. I didn't like how there was so little duck! It was maybe 2 thin slices in each half. The duck was over fried. I couldn't even taste duck. I just tasted fried batter. The pancake was more of a fried puff pastry. This was also a huge let down as it was so oily. I didn't like the accompanying veggies as they were also scarce and they weren't really edible. They were like the ends near the root of the green onion or vegetable that no one wants. And for the dish to be 6~7 $. That was outrageous! Huge point deduction here. For dinner I got two temaki. Spicy tekka temaki and spicy yellowtail temaki. The yellowtail one was just okay. Not bad, but certainly not good. It wasn't memorable either. I literally just ate a few hours ago and I can't even remember this hand roll really well. The one thing I do remember is the cucumber. This was very shocking to me. They literally just put one whole cubed slice of cucumber in the hand roll! They didn't finely chop/Julienne the cucumber like in traditional kappa maki or other places where I get temaki. That was a huge point deduction. (5.50$)they gave out a pretty good portion of the yellowtail, but I think this one needed more spicy Mayo sauce. I actually liked the spicy tekka temaki the best! If I had just had that, I would definitely given this place 4 stars, if not 5! This temaki had the perfect amount of spice and tuna. Yes, it could have been spicier, but I really liked it here! I also really liked the texture of the tuna. The mix was perfect and I loved the added in masago. I also really liked the avocado and the fact that they didn't skimp out on the tekka. And the price was just right! 5.50$!! Only complaint: the cucumber cubed slice! My dining companion ordered the #5 Bento box. It is huge and they give you a lot of food! ($16.50~$17.00). I thought it looked pretty good! You get 6 nigiri, 3 pieces of California maki, 3 Japanese dumplings, a cup of rice, and chicken with a sweet soy sauce. It also comes with Miso soup and salad. However my dining companion thought it was just alright. He let me try it and I agreed. The dumplings were okay, the chicken was okay, and everything was just 'okay'. I feel like they were going more for quantity, not quality. The fish on the nigiri was okay, and it lacked the wasabi between the fish and Shari. The Shari (rice) had a very light vinegar taste. But I assume they did that to appeal to the American palate. The service was good. I don't have any complaints! I felt bad for the waitress as it took me so long to order! She remained calm and extremely patient! The wait staff was all very helpful and they helped eachother out. I had waiters from other tables clearing my plates. :) All in all, I may come back to try the Thai dishes or the other Asian dishes, however I feel like I will be disappointed. The price is also pretty steep for some of their special rolls!! But if I were to come back, it will definitely have to try the bagel roll! read more

Sweet ginger's multi-ethnic cuisine (japanese and thai) gets big brownie point since I want more than one type of dish. We got lunchbox #3 and pork-katsu. Both comes with salad and miso soup. Tempura was good (light and right crunchness) and a side dish of sweet fried tofu was very tasty. Katsu had good crisp crust and flavorful meat. I really liked the potato salad comes with Katsu. This potato salad had no mayo and had peas and diced mushroom. Hightlight of the meal: Asian donut!! This is different from most american donuts (e.g. krispy kreme). It was gooey and soft like mochi. I think it was made of sticky rice powder (not wheat flour) so it gets different texture. This kind of donuts are popular in Japan and Korea. I love this donut and if you like mochi, you should try it. I will definitely return to try other non-japanese dishes soon. read more

I come here for one thing and one thing only: The Japanese Bagel roll. I do not care if you think cream cheese in your sushi is weird; I love it. Lightly batter-fried, fresh salmon, cream cheese topped with roe and spicy mayo. All these aspects culminated together into something truly decadent and delicious. Their other sushi selections are great too. They also have a Thai menu which, to be honest, I don't really care for. Personally I think they should just stick with Japanese b/c they do it very well. I love Sweet Ginger :) The serving staff is always so nice, especially to my daughter, which makes it a very good experience just based off of that alone. My wife and I get the Sushi Combo for 2 which is more than enough to fill you up but sometimes we will get 1 or 2 specialty rolls with it. It also comes with a bowl of miso soup and salad for each person. I normally get to eat both my wife and mine. We also get x2 Thai Teas even though I'm lactose intolerant it's always worth it. I wish I could remember the dessert we got last time it was donuts with ice cream. I recommend the green tea and the red bean ice cream - can't go wrong with those flavors. My boyfriend ordered red curry w chicken and it was really odd looking and tasting, not like regular Thai curried chicken, more like a really small breast of chicken cut up with a lot of red sauce and too many veggies. I was enticed by the photos posted here on Yelp of all the colorful rows of sushi and sashimi.. I even snapped a few myself. But looks aren't everything, right? The rolls here are not very well-made, were overly sauced, heavy on the rice, and had sad amounts of fish/seafood. Service was friendly and attentive though - my girlfriend and I always had full cups of water and green tea and our dishes were brought out quickly. Tempura Udon - Really the highlight of our meal. The broth was comforting and flavorful, not greasy at all. The hot soup was a perfect companion to the rolls. Crunchy Lobster Roll - Delicious because of the creamy orange sauce, but that's all I tasted. The lobster, or what I assume to be lobster, looked like it was minced and provided no texture or flavor. Seafood Dynamite Roll - Shrimp tempura roll with lots of artificial crab meat over the top in a sauce that tasted very much like gochujang (Korean red pepper paste) - the sauce was out of place for me. I didn't care too much for this one. Rainbow Roll - This wasn't bad, but again, they really skimped on the raw fish. After just recently trying out Sushi Prince, I can't help but compare the two and be a little disappointed. Although, the prices here are right and the service is friendly, there are other sushi places nearby that offer better quality cuts of fish - I won't be making the hike here again any time soon. read more
