We wanted coffee for a long drive and stopped by because of the good reviews. We didn't realize it was $8 for a cold brew because the prices were on a paper menu and not on the board (we expected maybe $5/6 max - we probably should have checked first). So we got two cold brews and a hot chocolate thing and paid $24. We had to wait for a while because they were taking their time to make it. And then it came out and it tasted like water with a slight flavor. We let them know and they brought out a cup of their cold brew without milk so we could add it (which was nice of them) but then we were in the car and tasted the plain cold brew and it still tasted like water. It seems like they don't brew their coffee long enough? Idk. Just wow for everything. I mean everything. My tryst here began with their infamous buckwheat pancakes served with fruit, butter and maple syrup. Honestly they were so yumm with fruits alone that I didn't feel the need to add any condiments. I am back now in sfo but if I have an opportunity to fly back, I would just travel for their gorgeous pancakes and the green smoothie. Wish I had tried more on their menu but good service, great ambience and the pancakes were just enough to wow me. Ive enjoyed eating at Sweet Cane for over five years but I noticed some pretty drastic changes in 2021. Though the staff are still incredibly kind, a big reason why I've consistently tipped them, they have lost my order 3 times, they have waited on average 15 to 20 minutes to let me know that an item was sold out at least 3 times, and more times than not my order has taken at least 25 minutes (for smoothies, poke bowls, fritters, etc) even when there were 3-4 people waiting and about 6-8 people in the kitchen. I'm fairly certain their owner has been present at least 2/7 times these accidents happened. I'm finally accepting that Sweet Cane has changed and I'd advised going there when you don't need to be anywhere urgently and don't have a particular dish you're hoping to order. read more

This is a really nice café. Big bright cheery interior, great welcome, excellent fast service. I ordered a chipotle taro burger with cheese (which I split with a friend) and a generous "cup" of pumpkin vegetable soup. The soup was hearty and chunky. I would order that again. The sandwich was nicely composed and made with big red ripe tomato slices, shaved carrots, and a thin slice of cheese. The taro patty was a tad gluey and a bit bland and I would've liked some dressing or sauce or condiment to help pull the sandwich together. The avocado sandwich was really fresh and had a bunch of great, crunchy veggies but needed some sort of sauce or salt to pull it together. My sister in law said she really liked the kale lover salad but I forgot to try it so can't comment on that. The jalapeno ulu burger and caesar salad were not good. Both were completely underseasoned and the burger was falling apart and had some weird sweet sauce on it that just didn't go. We bought sandwiches here for our trip to the National Park. The food was ok--didn't travel as well as maybe if we'd had them fresh. That said, the spicy peppers sandwich was flavorful. My husband's Mediterranean sandwich was big and unwieldy. The flavor of the pesto was very good. My kids got grilled cheeses that would have been better warm but that's our fault! This was such a worth it place. We ordered the bagel which came with a side, we got their vegan poke, which I really enjoyed. The bagel came with cream cheese avocado tomato and sprouts. Delicious bagel and the bagel itself was really healthy feeling(ingredients wise). We also got sugarcane juice which was a must !! The açaí bowl was really good and I recommend adding some extra honey, definitely very unique! Finally we got the banana pancake, made with buckwheat. My advice is to pour the maple syrup on top and the pancake will soak it right up, otherwise it may taste bland! Overall great meal, and I've never been so full but also felt so light because of how healthy every ingredient was! I've never actually eaten at the restaurant location but contacted Sweet Cane to cater my wedding in Pahoa last week. I live in Cali so I had to trust in the reviews of other people and hope that the food would be good. My husband & I are both plant based eaters and mostly gluten free, they seemed like the best fit for our dietary needs and for the location our wedding was in so we went for it. I have nothing but good things to say, it was really hard to pick what we wanted because they had so many delicious sounding options. We ended up ordering the Happy Buddha bowl, the taco bar, Lau Pele & mushroom enchiladas, and several raw pies in lieu of wedding cake. The food was so good!!! The taro chips were amazing, we didn't even have any leftovers by the end of the night. There was also this thick, orange sauce (maybe the macnut sauce?) and I ate it with everything for the days after it was so good. The sauce that pairs with the Buddha bowl was also amazing. Most of our guests were meat eaters and we had nothing but good feedback on the food. I was in raw pie heaven, we ordered 4 different flavors: vanilla with lilikoi, raspberry-chocolate swirl, matcha, and mango-coconut. The raspberry-chocolate swirl was my favorite although they were all delicious. We had around 30 guests and tons of food leftovers, the band that played our wedding got lots of food as well and they seemed stoked. Everyone devoured the leftover pies in the days that followed, we ordered 2 of each flavor so there was lots of leftovers, but I'm kind of glad we did because we got to enjoy them all week. The two ladies from Sweet Cane that set everything up were so friendly, sweet, and professional, I enjoyed their energy. The set up itself was very professional and the perfect size for our event. They showed up on time and food was served at the time I requested. Reusable utensils, plates, and cloth napkins were all provided by Sweet Cane which I appreciate. I'm glad they are not using disposable items for catering events and instead choose to reuse. The communication process in the weeks leading up to the wedding went smoothly and Cherub was super friendly in helping us out to plan it. I will definitely visit the actual location when I come back to the Big Island to eat some of their yummy food. Sweet Cane Cafe is a little spot near UH Hilo that serves sandwiches, smoothies, and acai bowls. Located on Kilauea Avenue, right next to Tyke's Laundromat, it is a perfect place to stop by while waiting for your laundry to finish drying. Parking is ample and there is a table for two inside the cafe and a couple tables outside. The cafe seems to be known for their variety of smoothies that are made with sugar cane juice. I scouted the menu which consists only of veggies (sorry, meat lovers) and decided on the macnut pesto sandwich. It was full of sprouts and semi soggy bread. Thinking that I'd try something new, I also ordered the Spice It Up smoothie, but instantly regretted the spiciness and the taste of turmeric that does not go so well with mango. This cafe is a popular place for students, and I can see myself returning to grab a quick bite before heading to school.
